• Uploading documents to WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services) using SSIS

  Recently I was tasked to create an SSIS application that will query a database, split the results with certain criteria and create CSV file for every result and upload the file to a Sharepoint Document Library site. I've search the web and compiled the steps I've taken to build the solution. Summary: A) Create a proxy class of WSS Copy.asmx. B) Create a wrapper class for the proxy class and add a mechanism to check if the file is existing and delete method. C) Create an SSIS and call the wrapper class to transfer the files.   A) Creating Proxy Class 1) Go to Visual Studio Command Prompt type wsdl http://[sharepoint site]/_vti_bin/Copy.asmx this will generate the proxy class (Copy.cs) that will be added to the solution. 2) Add Copy.cs to solution and create another constructor for Copy() that will accept additional parameters url, userName, password and domain.   public Copy(string url, string userName, string password, string domain) { this.Url = url; this.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(userName, password, domain); } 3) Add a namespace.     B) Wrapper Class Create a C# new library that references the Proxy Class.         C) Create SSIS SSIS solution is composed of:   1) Execute SQL Task, returns a single column rows containing the criteria. 2) Foreach Loop Container - loops per result from query (SQL Task) and creates a CSV file on a certain folder. 3) Script Task - calls the wrapper class to upload CSV files located on a certain folder to targer WSS Document Library Note: I've created another overload of CopyFiles that accepts a Directory Info instead of file location that loops thru the contents of the folder. • Learn Cloud Computing – It’s Time

  Last week, I gave an in-house presentation on cloud computing.  I walked through an overview of cloud computing – characteristics (on demand, elastic, fully managed by provider), why are we interested (virtualization, distributed computing, increased access to high-speed internet, weak economy), various types (public, private, virtual private cloud) and services models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.)  Though numerous providers have emerged in the cloud computing space, the presentation focused on Amazon, Google and Microsoft offerings and provided an overview of their platforms, costs, data tier technologies, management and security.  One of the biggest talking points was why developers should consider the cloud as part of their deployment strategy: You only have to pay for what you consume You will be well-positioned for one time event provisioning You will reap the benefits of automated growth and scalable technologies For the record: having deployed dozens of applications on various platforms over the years, pricing tends to be the biggest customer concern.  Yes, scalability is a customer consideration, too, but it comes in distant second.  Boy do I hope you’re still reading… You may be thinking, “Cloud computing is well and good and it sounds catchy, but should I bother?  After all, it’s just another technology bundle which I’m supposed to ramp up on because it’s the latest thing, right?”  Well, my clients used to be 100% reliant upon me to find adequate hosting for them.  Now I find they are often aware of cloud services and some come to me with the “possibility” that deploying to the cloud is the best solution for them.  It’s like the patient who walks into the doctor’s office with their diagnosis and treatment already in mind thanks to the handful of Internet searches they performed earlier that day.  You know what?  The customer may be correct about the cloud. • Getting started with Blocks and namespaces - Enterprise Library 5.0 Tutorial Part 2

  This is my second post in this series. In first blog post I explained how to install Enterprise Library 5.0 and provided links to various resources. Enterprise Library is divided into various blocks. Simply we can say, a block is a ready made solution for a particular common problem across various applications. So instead focusing on implementation of common problem across various applications, we can reuse these fully tested and extendable blocks to increase the productivity and also extendibility as these blocks are made with good design principles and patterns. • Resolving the Access is Denied Error in VSeWSS Deployments

  Visual Studio Extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 1.3 (VSeWSS 1.3) tends to make my life easier unless I'm typing out the words that make up the VSeWSS acronym - really, what a mouthful.  But one of the problems that I routinely encounter are error messages when trying to deploy solutions.  These normally look something like the following: Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) I tried a variety of steps to resolve this issue: Recycling the application pool Restarting IIS Closing Visual Studio Not detaching from the debugger until a request was fully completed Logging off and logging back into Windows etc. Nothing actually worked.  Some of these resolution attempts seemed to help keep the problem from happening quite as frequently, but I still have no idea what EXACTLY causes the problem and it would rear its ugly head from time to time.  Unfortunately, the only resolution I found that seemed to work was to reboot the machine . which is a crappy resolution. Finally sick enough of the problem to spend some time on it, I went on a search and tried to figure out if anyone else was having this issue.  People seem to suggest that turning off the Indexing Service on your machine helps resolve this problem.  I tried turning it off but I kept having issues.  Which was depressing.  Fortunately, I stumbled upon the resolution when I was looking through the services list.  If you encounter the issue, all you have to do is reset the World Wide Web Publishing Service.  I've had a 100% success rate so far with this approach.  I'm not sure if having the Indexing Service is part of the solution, but I've kept it disabled for the time being because I'm really sick of having to reboot my machine to deal with that error message. • Deciding which technology to use is a big decision when no technology is an obvious choice

  Deciding which technology to use in a new venture or project is a big decision for any company when no technology is an obvious choice. It is always best to analyze the current requirements of the project, and also evaluate the existing technology climate so that the correct technology based on the situation at the time is selected. When evaluation the requirements of a new project it is best to be open to as many technologies as possible initially so a company can be sure that the right decision gets made. Another important aspect of the technology decision is what can the current network and  hardware environment handle, and what would be needed to be adjusted if a specific technology was selected. For example if the current network operating system is Linux then VB6 would force  a huge change in the current computing environment. However if the current network operation system was windows based then very little change would be needed to allow for VB6 if any change had to be done at all. Finally and most importantly an analysis should be done regarding the current technical employees pertaining to their skills and aspirations. For example if you have a team of Java programmers then forcing them to build something in C# might not be an ideal situation. However having a team of VB.net developers who want to develop something in C# would be a better situation based on this example because they are already failure with the .Net Framework and have a desire to use the new technology. In addition to this analysis the cost associated with building and maintaining the project is also a key factor. If two languages are ideal for a project but one technology will increase the budget or timeline by 50% then it might not be the best choice in that situation. An ideal situation for developing in C# applications would be a project that is built on existing Microsoft technologies. An example of this would be a company who uses Windows 2008 Server as their network operating system, Windows XP Pro as their main operation system, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as their primary database, and has a team of developers experience in the .net framework. In the above situation Java would be a poor technology decision based on their current computing environment and potential lack of Java development by the company’s developers. It would take the developers longer to develop the application due the fact that they would have to first learn the language and then become comfortable with the language. Although these barriers do exist, it does not mean that it is not due able if the company and developers were committed to the project.

• Accessing Server-Side Data from Client Script: Using Ajax Web Services, Script References, and jQuery

  Today's websites commonly exchange information between the browser and the web server using Ajax techniques. In a nutshell, the browser executes JavaScript code typically in response to the page loading or some user action. This JavaScript makes an asynchronous HTTP request to the server. The server processes this request and, perhaps, returns data that the browser can then seamlessly integrate into the web page. Typically, the information exchanged between the browser and server is serialized into JSON, an open, text-based serialization format that is both human-readable and platform independent. Adding such targeted, lightweight Ajax capabilities to your ASP.NET website requires two steps: first, you must create some mechanism on the server that accepts requests from client-side script and returns a JSON payload in response; second, you need to write JavaScript in your ASP.NET page to make an HTTP request to this service you created and to work with the returned results. This article series examines a variety of techniques for implementing such scenarios. In Part 1 we used an ASP.NET page and the JavaScriptSerializer class to create a server-side service. This service was called from the browser using the free, open-source jQuery JavaScript library. • Running your SSMS client as a domain user even if you&rsquo;re not in a domain

  I wonder if it is possible to use the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) client on my machine with a specific domain user when my machine wasn’t in that domain. In fact, many developers use some SSMS add-ons installed on their machine (with appropriate licenses), which greatly simplify their daily work. For example, I’m a Red Gate SQL Prompt addicted , so it’d be convenient for me to work on customers’ SQL Server instances with this tool. After reading Davide Mauri’s post, a friend and collegue of mine, I created a batch file in order to specify a domain and a user for SSMS: @echo off echo *************************************** echo *** Run SSMS 2008 R2 as domain user *** echo *************************************** echo. set /P user="Type the domain\username: " C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /netonly /user:%user% "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe" Then, you can create on your desktop a shortcut to the file batch previously developed and you can also change the shortcut icon, using the same SSMS icon (get it from the Ssms.exe file). Now if you double-click on the shortcut, you can set domain and user for the SSMS client on-the-fly: So enjoy using your “personal” SSMS client on your preferred domain

• Installing Enterprise Library 5.0 - Enterprise Library 5.0 Tutorial Part 1

  Microsoft has released Enterprise Library on April 2010. it’s free you can download and install from “Download Enterprise Library”. you can also find older version of enterprise library 4.1 still if your project needs it for maintenance purpose. but I suggest go for 5.0 as it has great enhancements and improved UI configuration tool. Will it work only with Visual Studio 2008? Yes. Yes, it works with also .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008. you can take advantage of new improved UI configuration tool which comes from enterprise library 5.0 with VS2008. • Apple File Sharing fails to connect

  Running OSX Lion Server (10.7.4), and about once a week or so the Apple File Sharing service stops letting clients connect to its shares. On the client we will see a dialog box stating "There was a problem connecting to the server ". Browsing the server we simply no longer see the shares. The clients are also running the latest OSX (10.7.4) In /var/log/system.log we see entries like the following: Jun 26 08:38:22 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 157 Jun 26 08:42:11 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 165 Jun 26 08:42:21 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 174 Where 20511 appears to be the pid, and client_id appears to be incremented with each failed attempt. Nothing jumps out at me from /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileService[Access|Error].log Restarting the service fixes the problem: serveradmin stop afp && serveradmin start afp So I added a script to do this daily using the periodic service. But, we still encounter this problem about once a a week.

• Making Money from your SQL Server Blog

  My SQL Server blog reading list is around one hundred blogs.  Many people are writing great content and generating lots of page views.  I see some of them running Google AdSense and trying to make a little money off their traffic.  If you want to earn some some extra money from what you’ve written there are a couple of options.  And one new option that I’m announcing here. Background Internet advertising is sold based on a few different pricing schemes.  Flat Fee.  You offer either all your impressions (page views) or some percentage of your impressions in exchange for a flat monthly fee.  CPM or cost per thousand impressions.  If the quoted price is $2 CPM you’ll get $2 for every 1,000 times the ad is displayed.  While you might think the “M” means millions, the “M” in CPM is the roman numeral for 1,000. CPC or cost per click.  This is also called PPC or pay per click.  In this method you get paid based on how many clicks there are on the ad.  CPA or cost per action.  In this method you get paid based on an action that occurs on the advertisers site after they click on the ad.  This is typically some type of sign up form.  This is how most affiliate programs work. Darren Rowse at ProBlogger has been writing about blogging and making money off blogs for years.  He has a good introduction to making money on your blog in his “Making Money” section.  If you’re interested in learning more he has a post up titled How to Make More Money From Your Blog in the New Year that links to many of his best posts on the subject. Google AdSense This is the most common method for people earning money from their blogging.  It’s easy to setup and administer.  You tell AdSense what size ads you’d like to run and it gives you a little piece of JavaScript to put on your site.  AdSense quickly learns the topics you write about and displays ads that are appropriate for your site.  I typically see ads for hosting, SQL Server tools and developer tools running in AdSense slots.  AdSense pays on a CPC model.  If you translate that back to CPM pricing you’ll see rates from $0.50 to $1.00 CPM. Amazon While you might not make much money writing books it’s now possible to make even less helping Amazon sell them.  You can sign up for an Amazon affiliate program.  Each time you send Amazon a link and someone buys the book you get a cut of that sale.  This is the CPA model from above.  Amazon can help you build some pretty nice “stores”.  Here’s the SQL Server bookstore I built for SQLTeam.com.  If you’re just putting in a page with books like I’ve done on SQLTeam you should keep your expectations low.  If you’re writing book reviews of suggesting books on your blog it really does make sense to setup an Amazon affiliate link.  People are much more likely to buy a book based on a review from a trusted source.  I always try to buy through a referral link if there is one. Amazon pays about 4% of the price as a referral fee.  You also get credit for anything else they buy while on the site.  I recently had someone buy an iPod nano with their SQL Server book making me an extra $5.60 richer!  Estimating how much you can make is difficult though.  How much attention you draw to the links and book reviews can dramatically affect the earnings. Private Ad Sales This is the hardest but potentially most lucrative option.  You sell advertising directly to companies that want to sell things to your readers.  Typically this would be SQL Server tool vendors, hosting companies or anyone else that wants to make money off database administrators.  This is also the most difficult to do.  You’ll need the contacts at the companies and enough page views to make it worth their while.  You’ll also need software to track the page views and clicks, geo-target your ads and smooth out the impressions.  Your earnings are based on whatever you can negotiate with the companies. SQL Server Ad Network For the last couple of years I’ve run any extra ads that I sold on the SQLTeam Weblogs.  You can see an example of that on Mladen’s blog.  The ad in the upper right corner is one that I’m running for him.  (Note: Many of the ads I’m running are geo-targeted to only appear in English speaking countries.  You may see a different set of ads outside the US, Canada and the UK.  You can also see he has a couple of Google ads on his blog.)  When I run ads on his blog I split the advertising revenue with him.  They make a little and I make a little. I recently started to expand this and sell advertising specifically to run on SQL Server-related blogs.  I’m also starting to run ads on non-SQLTeam blogs.  The only way I can sell more advertising is to have more blogs to run it on.  And that’s where you come in. I’ve created a SQL Server advertising network.  I handle all the ad sales and provide the technology to serve the ads.  I handle collections and payments back to you.  You get paid at the end of each month regardless of when (or if) the advertiser actually pays.  All you need to do is add a small piece of JavaScript to your site to display the ads. If you’re writing about SQL Server and interested in earning a little money for your site I’d like to talk to you.  You can use the Contact Us page on SQLTeam.com to reach me.  Running advertising on your blog isn’t for everyone.  If you’re concerned about what advertisers might think about certain posts then you might not be a good fit.  For the most part this isn’t an issue.  You’ll also need to have a PayPal account to receive payments.  You probably won’t get rich doing this.  But you can earn extra cash on the side for doing what you would do anyway.  I do know that people have earned enough to buy themselves a nice laptop doing this. My initial target is blogs with more than 10,000 page views per month.  I expect to pay two to three times what Google pays.  If you have less than 10,000 page views per month but are still interested I’d still like to hear from you.  I may not be able to sign up smaller blogs right away but we’ll get the process started.  If you’re unsure about your traffic Google Analytics is a free tool that provides great reporting on traffic, popular posts and how people find your blog.  If you have any questions or are just curious drop me a line and I’ll try to answer your questions.

• Modify Build Failure Work Item in TFS 2010 Build

  The default behaviour in TFS Team Build (all versions) is to create a bug work item when a build fails. This main benefit of this is that you get a work item for something that needs to be done, namely to fix the build!. When the developer responsible for the build failure has fixed the problem, he/she can associated that check-in with the work item that was created from the previous build failure. In TFS 2005/2008 you could modify the information in the created work item by changing some predefined properties in the TFSBuild.proj file:   <!-- WorkItemType The type of the work item created on a build failure. --> <WorkItemType>Bug</WorkItemType> <!-- WorkItemFieldValues Fields and values of the work item created on a build failure. • C#.NET vs VB.NET, Which language is better?

  Features I cannot say any language good or bad as long as it's compiler can produce MSIL can run under .NET CLR. If someone says C# has more futures, you can understand that those new features are of C# compiler but not .NET, because if C# has a specific future then CLR cannot understand them. So the new features of C# will have to convert to the code understood by CLR eventually. that means the new features are developed for C# compiler basically to facilitates the developer to write their code in better way. so that means no difference in feature list between C# and VB.NET if you think in CLR perspective. Ease of writing Code I feel writing code in C# is easy, because my background is C and C++, Java, syntaxes very are similar. I assume most developers feel the same. Readability But some people say VB.NET code most readable for the members who are from non technical background, because keywords are generally in English rather special charectors. No of Projects in Market I assume 80 percent of market uses C# in their .NET development. for example in my company many projects are there .nET and all are using C#. Productivity & Experience though the feature list is same, generally developers wants to write code in their familiar languages. because it increase the productivity. • Get IIS 7.5 to listen on IPv6

  I'm using IIS on Windows 7, and I can't get it to bind to the IPv6 equivalent of 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1 ([::] and [::1]) The first one gives me an error when trying to start the service that says The World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWW Service) did not register the URL prefix http://[::]:80/ for site 1. The site has been disabled. The data field contains the error number. The second one doesn't give any errors but doesn't listen on anything apart from 0.0.0.0 The bindings dropdown only has my teredo address (2001::) listed, and not my link local (fe80::) one.
