• Why is my PHP query executing twice on page load?

  I am newish to PHP and I seem to be having an issue with an insert statement that executes twice when I open this page to view a document. In the database the 2nd insert is 1 second later. The records indictate there is a favicon.ico request so I created a blank favicon and placed it in my public_html folder and linked it in the page like so <link href="../favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" /> Unfortunately that did not work as the statement still executes twice. I am unsure if it is a favicon issue as my upload page uses an insert query and it executes once. If someone could please tell me where I am going wrong or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful

• Why am I losing sessions when running in StateServer mode?

  I have checked the servers (Win Server 2003) application event logs for the following problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308097 which doesn't show up. It just appears that sessions drop randomly for random users It's a single server setup, no web farms and no load balancing Even though the issue I point to above doesn't occur in the logs, is it worth increasing the stateNetworkTimeout attribute anyway? The configuration at the moment is simply <sessionState mode="StateServer" cookieless="false" stateConnectionString="tcpip=localhost:42424" timeout="60"/>

• Why "alt" attribute for <img> tag has been considered mandatory by the HTML validator .. ?

  Is there any logical or technical reason (with the W3C validation) for making alt as required attribute .. This is my actual problem:though my page is perfect enough with respect to W3C validation rules .. Only error I am getting is line XX column YY - Error: required attribute "ALT" not specified I know the significance of "alt" attribute and I have omitted that where it is unnecessary .. (to be more elaborate .. I have added the image to increase the beauty of my page and I don't want alt attribute to show irrelevant message to the viewer) getting rid of the error is secondary .. rather I am curious to know whether is it a flaw with validation rules .. ?? • Why is my masm32 program crashing whenever I try using interrupts?

This is the interrupt I'm trying to use. It should simply exit the program. Others I've tried include character input/output, etc.. Nothing works. I'm on windows 7, using masm32 with the WinAsm IDE. There are so many cool things it seems I should be able to do with interrupts... however, it crashes whenever I try to use an interrupt - always the same way. Any suggestions?

• Why doesn't my cursor change to an Hourglass in my FindDialog in Delphi?

  I am simply opening my FindDialog with: FindDialog.Execute; In my FindDialog.OnFind event, I want to change the cursor to an hourglass for searches through large files, which may take a few seconds. So in the OnFind event I do this: Screen.Cursor := crHourglass; (code that searches for the text and displays it) ... Screen.Cursor := crDefault; What happens is while searching for the text, the cursor properly changes to the hourglass (or rotating circle in Vista) and then back to the pointer when the search is completed. However, this only happens on the main form. It does not happen on the FindDialog itself. The default cursor remains on the FindDialog during the search. While the search is happening if I move the cursor over the FindDialog it changes to the default, and if I move it off and over the main form it becomes the hourglass. This does not seem like what is supposed to happen. Am I doing something wrong or does something special need to be done to get the cursor to be the hourglass on all forms? For reference, I'm using Delphi 2009.

  This one's got me stumped. Usually with a little CSS juggling here and there I am able to solve most IE7 CSS bugs, but not this one! Head on over to the example page and view it in IE7, you will soon see that when mousing over the (vertical) drop down menu on the left of the page, it opens the sub menu WAY over to the right. I have pulled every last hair out! If it helps, the menu was made with 'Sothink DHTML Menu 9' As always, all replies are much appreciated.

  I am doing an imaging app for iPad and it requires use of the entire screen. The approach I have used on iPhone does not appear to work on iPad. In Interface Builder I have set the UIToolbar to translucent.This code echos the dimensions of the main view before and after requesting fullscreen. • Why can't I declare C# methods virtual and static?

  I have a helper class that is just a bunch of static methods and would like to subclass the helper class. Some behavior is unique depending on the subclass so I would like to call a virtual method from the base class, but since all the methods are static I can't create a plain virtual method (need object reference in order to access virtual method). Is there any way around this? I guess I could use a singleton.. HelperClass.Instance.HelperMethod() isn't so much worse than HelperClass.HelperMethod(). Brownie points for anyone that can point out some languages that support virtual static methods. Edit: OK yeah I'm crazy. Google search results had me thinking I wasn't for a bit there.

• Why so much stack space used for each recursion?

  I have a simple recursive function RCompare() that calls a more complex function Compare() which returns before the recursive call. Each recursion level uses 248 bytes of stack space which seems like way more than it should. Here is the recursive function: void CMList::RCompare(MP n1) // RECURSIVE and Looping compare function { auto MP ne=n1->mf; while(StkAvl() && Compare(n1=ne->mb)) RCompare(n1); // Recursive call ! } StkAvl() is a simple stack space check function that compares the address of an auto variable to the value of an address near the end of the stack stored in a static variable. It seems to me that the only things added to the stack in each recursion are two pointer variables (MP is a pointer to a structure) and the stuff that one function call stores, a few saved registers, base pointer, return address, etc., all 32-bit (4 byte) values. There's no way that is 248 bytes is it? I don't no how to actually look at the stack in a meaningful way in Visual Studio 2008. Thanks

  I'm learning to use vlad the deployer and I've got a question. Since I'm still learning I don't know what is pertinent to the question and what isn't, so please bear with me if I'm a little verbose. I've got 2 environments for a new application (test and production) besides my development machine. I've figured out this way to do the initial setup in my vlad.rake: namespace :test task :set set :domain, 'test.myserver.com' end end namespace :production task :set set :domain, 'www.myserver.com' end end This way I can have environment-specific stuff inside the namespaces, and still have shared tasks. For example, this would be the initial setup for test: rake vlad:test:set vlad:setup vlad:update This creates the following folders on my test server: releases/ scm/ shared/ current -> symlink to last release (inside the releases folder) My question is: what's the point of the scm folder? Every time I do vlad:update, the following happens: svn checkout on the scm/ folder above svn export on the /releases/{date} folder update current symlink So scm is a copy of my repository... but then there's an "export" copy of the repository on /releases/{date}. And that is the one used by the application... scm doesn't seem to be used by anyone? Wouldn't I be just fine without the scm folder?

Now, I want to be able to edit the date at a future stage. However, I need the code to be able to do this. So far I have: EStartDate = new DateField("Start Date ", DateField.DATE); I had to change the name of the DateField box as this was conflicting with other things. I basically need to be able to show the selected record's date attribute. I currently have the other information displayed. I just need to be able to show the correct date. When I run the program the date field says <date>. Any help will be nice

• when long polling, Why are my other requests taking so long?

  The client makes 2 concurrent requests. (1 which takes 60 seconds - long polling) and another which is NOT long polling - supposed to return right away. It does return right away when I'm not doing long polling. But as soon as I start doing long polling with the other thread, the other one takes forever to execute. Firebug shows that the request is waiting for 10-50 seconds. On the server, I profiled ALL requests from the moment the php script starts to the time it goes back to the client, and it shows that each one only took 300ms or less. This problem started about the same time I started doing long polling (with the other XHR requests). I'm using jquery for both requests. The server shows that it is under very light load. CPU and memory less then 2%. 8 processes running out of a pool of 15. (it doesn't seem to deviate much from that number 8, even when I run more ajax requests). I guess each process can run multiple ajax threads concurrently. I made sure to EXIT from all processes as soon as their done executing. I don't see how the process pool has run out, if there are still 7 unused processes listed under prstat -J. Also, the problem happens somewhat intermittently. Firefox should be able to handle 2 concurrent ajax requests. i dont get what the problem is.

  I went to http://www.asp.net/mvc/ to try to install ASP.NET MVC. I didn't know, but MVC is now at version 2. There's a nifty thing called the Microsoft "Web Platform Installer" (WPI) which basically is a small installer-driver tool that presents a menu of things I might want to install, to do web things on Windows. On the menu are things like ASPNET MVC2, but also Drupal, PHP, Joomla, and a bunch of other things. From http://www.asp.net/mvc/, when I click on the link that says "Install MVC", it resolves to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=185037, which then pops up the WPI. But Then! I get an error dialog that reads "Installing ASPNET MVC2 requires VS2008 SP1". But I know that I have VS2008 SP1. What gives?

• Why does Joomla debug show 446 queries logged and 446 legacy queries logged?

  I have been called in to fix the performance of a Joomla site that was already setup. I look at the debug output and it shows the same queries twice, once for queries logged and again for legacy queries logged. My guess is that it is actually running the same queries twice make for just under 900 queries per page (hope I am wrong) The Legacy plugin is disabled, so Legacy mode is not on at all. The site uses VirtueMart as well (which BTW isn't working properly if the cache in the Global Config is turned on) Besides the fact that I don't think it should be running 446 queries anyway (sometimes even up to 650 per page ), has anyone every experienced this issue, and where would I look to fix this. • Why does this thumbnail generation code throw OutOfMemoryException on large files?

  This code works great for generating thumbnails, but when given a very large (100MB+) TIFF file, it throws OutOfMemoryExceptions. When I do it manually in Paint.NET on the same machine, it works fine. How can I improve this code to stop throwing on very large files? In this case I'm loading a 721MB TIF on a machine with 8GB RAM. The Task Manager shows 2GB used so something is preventing it from using all that memory. Specifically it throws when I load the Image to calculate the size of the original. • Why do UInt16 arrays seem to add faster than int arrays?

  It seems that C# is faster at adding two arrays of UInt16[] than it is at adding two arrays of int[]. This makes no sense to me, since I would have assumed the arrays would be word-aligned, and thus int[] would require less work from the CPU, no? I ran the test-code below, and got the following results: Int for 1000 took 9896625613 tick (4227 msec) UInt16 for 1000 took 6297688551 tick (2689 msec) The test code does the following: Creates two arrays named a and b, once. Fills them with random data, once. Starts a stopwatch. Adds a and b, item-by-item. This is done 1000 times. Stops the stopwatch. Reports how long it took. This is done for int[] a, b and for UInt16 a,b. And every time I run the code, the tests for the UInt16 arrays take 30%-50% less time than the int arrays. Can you explain this to me? • Why does does my stack overflow error occur after 518669 specifically?

  I created a java program to count up toward infinity: class up { public static void up (int n) { System.out.println (n) ; up (n+1) ; } public static void main (String[] arg) { up (1) ; } } i didn't actually expect it to get there but the thing that i noticed that was a bit curious was that it stopped at the same number each time: 518669 what is the significance of this number? (or of this number +1 i suppose). (also as a bit of an aside question, I've been told that the way i format my code is bad [indentation and such] what am i doing that isn't desirable?)
