Finding a job: feedback on my current prodicument and my relentless efforts [closed]

I am a very well rounded IT guy, with a passion for programming in particular. I have been through a BS program less the internship as I refuse to go lower than minimum wage (i.e. free) and/or such opportunities find the institution lacking. Since then, the catalog for my degree has changed, so I am making peace without it. I go up for job interviews and get myself no farther than a submitted resume. I have even changed my strategy and made this website: http://goo.gl/qqpN8 to showcase my highlights (but not at all exhaustive) for specific areas in the US and paid for classified ads. The 'internship' is notable as I am just trying to get my foot in the door. Because IT is so vast, with programming and engineering in particular, I spend my time researching the requirements for the job I am applying for. This has made me that well rounded guy I spoke of earlier, but has made me a victim of being a jack-of-all-trades; unfortunately being a master of none. I embrace my gung-ho attitude and find it to be a trait that has powered my career before. But I am starting to lose steam. I want it straight. What is not appealing about everything I am doing? What are the technologies that I need to focus on that are in great demand at the moment?

For years, we have all known (okay, maybe I give people too much credit) that there is a very small finite number of plots. I propose a project. Let’s use the blogosphere to catalog those plotlines, and then find and document the episodes of shows that use them, including the show title. As evidence, how many shows have used the following plot line:? The standard “evil twin” plotline? Once relegated to soaps, it has show up in crime shows, with the twist of DNA. Step one, concentrate one this one. Tell me about every show you recall that has used this plot. I will collect and document the shows on my website (www.loethen.net) and we can build a database of the plots. Step two, what other common themes should I offer up? How about the bigamist plot line? The “bad guy was dead” plot line (revenge from the dead"? The “vast government conspiracy” plotline? Let the games begin….

JQuery - Pass variables to PHP script via AJAX call and then display file

Hiya, I'm trying to generate Outlook event files for my events, doing so on the fly as and when someone requests it by pressing a link on the page. Here's what i've got so far, but I can't find out how to get the browser to download the content which is returned. I know how I could do this if I sent everything via _GET, but I'd prefer to do it via _POST, hence I'm going down this route.. Any thoughts? Thanks! Removing DIVs in a jquery dialog

How can I remove the unnecessary divs in the dialog window?

using javascript setTimeout to see if div has loaded

I'm loading remote data using dynamic script tags and JSON. the remote page that I'm displaying on my website has a div in it that I use to load content into. The problem is the javascript functions do not see the div as the page loads because it is remote data. if I set a timeout of about 300 it usually works and my javascipt can see the div. But sometimes it takes longer and it breaks the javascript. Unit testing custom controls in Silverlight

I have several custom controls (some kind of frames for content and layout management, like wrap panel), and would like to write unit tests for them. It's hard to find any good examples except Silverlight control toolkit, which has some helper classes to do unit tests and it's quite complicated. For MVVM classes it's easy to write tests because they don't use SL dependency system and infrastructure. Questions: how to unit test DepedenyProperty, what do I need to test how to test attached property do I test bindings with theme or UserControl, like simple textblock content binding, or command/event binding in MVVM with UserControl what else do I test in my custom controls, beside my business logic any good tutorial to achieve tests like those in control toolkit How do I start? Is SL controls toolkit only option for learning? For testing framework i'm using one from control toolkit, and for continuus integration on TFS build server I planned to use Statlight (from codeplex). Any advice on that?

Read and Write in the same file with different process

I have written the two program. One program is write the content to the text file simultaneously. Another program is read that content simultaneously. But both the program should run at the same time. For me the program is write the file is correctly. But another program is not read the file. I know that once the write process is completed than only the data will be stored in the hard disk. Then another process can read the data. But I want both read and write same time with different process in the single file. How can I do that? Please help me.

Installation causing broken packages

Here I come I am so determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot). When I got it I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev but doesn't help, only makes life complicated. What the *#$%&!!! I don't want to be forced to become a computer scientist just to be able to use a free source os. P.s. the sound stopped working

What's wrong with this?

Is there a way to morph / convert a circular sprite into a square programmatically?

I have a sprite which is basically just an image of a circle and some content inside. Is there a way that I can programmatically stretch / distort it into something like: I don't care so much about the distortion. The original circular image is 100x100px, and the modified image should also be 100x100px. So its really the content that is being distorted. Can this be done using shaders or some other programmatic way ? The initial circular image is most likely determined at run time, which is why I need to programmatically convert the circular sprite to square. Please do not edit the tags, as the question applies to both versions of cocos2d (iPhone & x), and the solution will most likely work in both regardless of whether one uses C or C++ since the apis are similar, and OpenGL commands work similarly.

Performing complicated XPath queries in Scala

What's the simplest API to use in scala to perform the following XPath queries on a document? //s:Annotation[@type='attitude']/s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='type' and not(text())] //s:Annotation[s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='id' and not(text())]]/@type The only documentation I can find on Scala's XML libraries has no information on performing complicated real XPath queries. I used to like JDOM for this purpose (in Java), but since JDOM doesn't support generics, it will be painful to work with in Scala. (Other XML libraries for Java have tended to be even more painful in Java, but I admit I don't know the landscape real well.)

Jquery click function does not load ajax tabs

I have some tabs that load ajax content. When I click on the tabs it loads the ajax content perfectly no issues works exactly like it does in the Jqueryui demos. But when I try and change tab using an onclick function it opens the tab but doesn't do the ajax. Is this a known issue can it be done?? Reading value of cookie using curl in php

Hello, Im using Firefox 3.5.9. When i visit a url , it sets a cookie on my computer.I can see this cookie in Firefox by going to Tools-Options-Privacy,then clicking on 'Remove Individual Cookies'. There is a folder called xyz,which contains a cookie named JSessionId and which has some Content value . If i use curl in my php code to navigate to that website,is there a way i can read the Content value of that cookie programmatically ? . Some sample code would be really appreciated. Thank You

Need help from CSS purist!

I'm beginning to use CSS more and more but I'm not sure if I'm using it as intended in all cases. I have classes named things like 'box' that will wrap the content inside it with a border, which seems like good CSS to me. On the other hand I have classes like 'margin-right-5' and 'float-left' that sets the css to margin-right: 5px and float:left respectively. I'm wondering if this is good practice. Then in my markup I'd do something like: <div class="box float-left margin-right-5">  </div> Sometimes I may want to float right or not have a margin at all and still use the 'box' class, so I use several classes in order to make the css more flexible. Am I destroying the principles of CSS?

Handling Exceptions that happen in a asp.net MVC Controller Constructor

What's the best way to handle exceptions that happen from within a controller's constructor? All I can think of to do is use Application_OnError() or put a try/catch in my ControllerFactory. Neither of these solutions seem ideal. Application_OnError is to broad - I have some non-mvc content in the site that has its own error handling. Using a try/catch block seems kinda hacky. If I'm serving different content type -html/text/json/rss.... I would like to be able to handle the exception from within the action method instead of having to write all kinds of conditions to determine what kind of error message to serve. Am I missing something here, or has anyone else dealt with this?

Subdomain mapping to another external subdomain

I'm trying to map help.domain1.com to help.domain2.com. I've seen this on UserVoice. They let you map something.yourdomain.com to something.uservoice.com. On domain1.com I've set up a CNAME to help.domain2.com. It works fine but when I open help.domain1.com I get the content of domain2.com instead of help.domain2.com. After some experimenting I've realized that this is an expected behavior. So my question is what do I have to do on domain2.com (or maybe on domain1.com?) to have it show content of subdomain "help.domain2.com" when I navigate help.domain1.com? (I'm using Plesk and the OS is Windows Server 2003)

SEO Help with Pages Indexed by Google

I'm working on optimizing my site for Google's search engine, and lately I've noticed that when doing a "site:www.joemajewski.com" query, I get results for pages that shouldn't be indexed at all. Let's take a look at this page, for example: http://www.joemajewski.com/wow/profile.php?id=3 I created my own CMS, and this is simply a breakdown of user id #3's statistics, which I noticed is indexed by Google, although it shouldn't be. I understand that it takes some time before Google's results reflect accurately on my site's content, but this has been improperly indexed for nearly six months now. Here are the precautions that I have taken: My robots.txt file has a line like this: Disallow: /wow/profile.php* When running the url through Google Webmaster Tools, it indicates that I did, indeed, correctly create the disallow command. It did state, however, that a page that doesn't get crawled may still get displayed in the search results if it's being linked to. Thus, I took one more precaution. In the source code I included the following meta data: <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow" /> I am assuming that follow means to use the page when calculating PageRank, etc, and the noindex tells Google to not display the page in the search results. This page, profile.php, is used to take the $_GET['id'] and find the corresponding registered user. It displays a bit of information about that user, but is in no way relevant enough to warrant a display in the search results, so that is why I am trying to stop Google from indexing it. This is not the only page Google is indexing that I would like removed. I also have a WordPress blog, and there are many category pages, tag pages, and archive pages that I would like removed, and am doing the same procedures to attempt to remove them. Can someone explain how to get pages removed from Google's search results, and possibly some criteria that should help determine what types of pages that I don't want indexed. In terms of my WordPress blog, the only pages that I truly want indexed are my articles. Everything else I have tried to block, with little luck from Google. Can someone also explain why it's bad to have pages indexed that don't provide any new or relevant content, such as pages for WordPress tags or categories, which are clearly never going to receive traffic from Google. How can I find out if an data- attribute is set to an empty value?

Is there a way to find out if an data- attribute is set to an empty value or if it is not set at all? I need to know if the attribute actually is set to an empty value or if it is not set at all. Is that actually possible? EDIT: The reason I'm asking is that I'm updating content with the attributes value, so data-test="" should update the content to an empty value, but data-test should do nothing at all
