• New Responsibilities

  With the start of the new year, I’m starting new responsibilities at Veracity. One responsibility that is staying constant is my love and evangelism of Agile.  In fact, I’ll be spending more time ensuring that all Veracity teams are performing agile, Scrum specifically, in a consistent manner so that all of our clients and consultants have a similar experience. Imagine, if you will, working for a consulting company on a project.  On that project, the project management style is Waterfall in iterations.  Now you move to another project and in that project, you’re doing real Scrum, but in both cases, you were told that what you were doing was Scrum.  Rather confusing.  I’ve found, however, that this happens on many teams and many projects.  Most companies simply aren’t disciplined enough to do Scrum.  Some think that being Agile means not being disciplined.  The opposite is true! So, my goals for Veracity are to make sure that all of our consultants have a consistent feel for Scrum and what it is and how it works and then to make sure that on the projects they’re assigned to, Scrum is appropriately applied for their situation.  This will help keep them happier, but also make switching to other projects easier and more consistent.  If we aren’t doing the project management on the project, we’ll help them know what good Agile practices should look like so that they can give good advice to the client, and so that if they move to another project, they have a consistent feel. • Recommended storage scheme for home server? (LVM/JBOD/RAID 5...)

  Are there any guidelines for which storage scheme(s) makes most sense for a multiple-disk home server? I am assuming a separate boot/OS disk (so bootability is not a concern, this is for data storage only) and 4-6 storage disks of 1-2 TB each, for a total storage capacity in the range 4-12 TB. The file system is ext4, I expect there will be only one big partition spanning all disks. As far as I can tell, the alternatives are individual disks pros: works with any combination of disk sizes; losing a disk loses only the data on that disk; no need for volume management. cons: data management is clumsy when logical units (like a "movies" folder) are larger than the capacity of any single drive. JBOD span pros: can merge disks of any size. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks LVM pros: can merge disks of any size; relatively simple to add and remove disks. cons: losing a disk loses all data on all disks RAID 0 pros: speed cons: losing one drive loses all data; disks must be same size RAID 5 pros: data survives losing one disk cons: gives up one disk worth of capacity; disks must be same size RAID 6 pros: data survives losing two disks cons: gives up two disks worth of capacity; disks must be same size I'm primarily considering either LVM or JBOD span simply because it will let me reuse older, smaller-capacity disks when I upgrade the system. The runner-up is RAID 0 for speed. I'm planning on having full backups to a separate system, so I expect the extra redundancy from RAID levels 5 or 6 won't be important. Is this a fair representation of the alternatives? Are there other considerations or alternatives I have missed? And what would you recommend?

• Lots of static/crackling noises after ALSA HDA DKMS installation

  I am using a Samsung Chronos 7 laptop with the following sound setup: $ head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec* ==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 <== Codec: Realtek ALC269VC ==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#3 <== Codec: Intel CougarPoint HDMI With the stock ALSA that comes with Ubuntu 12.04, I do not get any sound out of the headphones when I plug them into the headphone jack. After plugging the headphones in, I have to manually use Alsamixer to increase the volume, so that the headphones become usable. I have been told that this issue is due to my sound chip not being supported in the ALSA version that ships with Precise. A similar question at AskUbuntu and the Ubuntu Community Documentation point me to the ALSA DKMS installation. After installing the dkms module of yesterday's ALSA snapshot and rebooting, the headphone issue is indeed solved. I can now plug my headphones into the jack and instantly have sound on them. However, now I have tons of static noises and crackling when playing sound in VLC player or Skype (Firefox HTML5 playback seems to be fine, unless a Skype sound interferes with it). Is there a fix for this? I tried adding the Alsa PPA and installing the latest ALSA package proper, but that didn't have any effect, only the Alsa DKMS package seems to solve the headphone issue.

• Advice on developing a social network [on hold]

  I am doing research on assembling a team, using the right tools, and the cost to develop a highly responsive social network that is capable of dealing with a lot of users. Similar to the Facebook concept but using the basics package for now. Profile, friends, posts, updates, media upload/download, streaming, chat and Inbox messaging are all in the package. We certainly do not expect it to be as popular as Facebook or handle the same number of users and requests, but in its own game it has to be a monster, and expandable for later on. Neglecting the hosting, and servers part, i am looking for technical advise and opinions, on what kind of team i need ? how many developers ? their expertise ? What are the right tools ? languages ? frameworks ? environments ? Any random ideas about the infrastructure ? Quick thoughts on the development process ? Please use references, if you have any to support your ideas. Development cost mere estimation ? NEGLECTING THE COST OF SERVERS I know my question is too broad but my knowledge is very limited and i need detailed help, for any help you can offer i thank you in advance.

• bash-like features in sqlplus, rman and other Oracle command line tools

  As far as I can remember, I have always been complaining about the lack of “recall last command” from within sqlplus. Such a basic thing, available in any bash shell or windows cmd terminal, remains missing with Oracle command lines tools. Thanks to davidw who published a post in the french blog EASYTEAM, it is now possible to use a simple rpm package rlwrap to enhance sqlplus, dgmgrl, rman, … tools and give them bash “recall/completion” capabilities. I installed it in a few minutes and I am already wondering how can people work without it. The steps are here : Get the rpm file from sites like RPM PBone. AS root, install the package rpm -ivh rlwrap-0.37-1.el5.x86_64.rpm As Oracle, create a dictionnary file (for autocompletion) . This file is made of a series of words to be used for autocompletion. Put in it the list of dictionary tables, the list of sql commands, the list of sqlplus commands… whatever your like. And use the <tab> key as you would in a bash shell. $HOME/.oracle_keywords Create an alias for sqlplus alias sqlplus='/usr/bin/rlwrap -if $HOME/.oracle_keywords $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus' And enjoy it !!! It's location mitigates against using a wired connection.

• How to hide the mouse cursor

  I'm building a kiosk using Ubuntu Precise on a touch screen. Now I'm looking for the appropriate way to make the mouse cursor disappear. As people know where they are pointing, displaying an arrow under their finger is useless, and having an error where they last pointed even more so. My best bet would be some kind of cursor theme consisting only of transparent cursors. I'm a bit surprised to find no UI to switch and maybe install cursor themes the default Unity UI, but as I won't be using Unity, that's not much of a problem. It appears that the alternatives listed in update-alternatives --list x-cursor-theme all refer to .theme files, so I searched the package list for those. The resulting list does not list any likely candidates, i.e. no packages containing “invisible” or “transparent” in their name. So far, some googled result yielding a readme for “XCursor Transparent Theme” is my best bet. That would mean compiling those sources myself, perhaps putting them into my PPA. I'm also a bit sceptical about that result as said readme is dated from 2003. And I'm not sure that I'm not making things overly complicated. After all, there is quite some support in Precise for touch devices, so I don't believe I'm the first one who wants to get rid of his mouse cursor. Is there another way which doesn't involve user-compiled binary code? Is there a theme package for transparent cursors which I've overlooked? Is there some other mechanism to make the cursor disappear without changing the cursor theme? I'll be using Matchbox WM, Firefox and Java applets, so I'll be happy with any solution working under such a setup. I'm not interested in any solutions twiddling with Gnome or Compiz, as I'll not be running either.

• Lost WiFi after 12.10 upgrade

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance! Edit: I can connect via ethernet, just not via wifi.   This is a simple heads up for anyone doing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) development using SSIS 2012. Be aware that messages do not always appear in [catalog].[event_messages] in the order that they occur, observe… In the following query I am looking at a subset of messages in [catalog].[event_messages] and ordering them by [event_message_id]: SELECT [event_message_id],[event_name],[message_time],[message_source_name]FROM   [catalog].[event_messages] emWHERE  [event_message_id] BETWEEN 290972 AND 290982ORDER  BY [event_message_id] ASC--ORDER BY [message_time] ASC Take a look at the two rows that I have highlighted, note how the OnPostExecute event for “Utility GetTargetLoadDatesPerETLIfcName” appears after the OnPreExecute event for “FELC Loop over TargetLoadDates”, I happen to know that this is incorrect because “Utility GetTargetLoadDatesPerETLIfcName” is a package that gets executed by an Execute Package Task prior to the For Each Loop “FELC Loop over TargetLoadDates”: If we order instead by [message_time] then we see something that makes more sense: SELECT [event_message_id],[event_name],[message_time],[message_source_name]FROM   [catalog].[event_messages] emWHERE  [event_message_id] BETWEEN 290972 AND 290982--ORDER BY [event_message_id] ASCORDER  BY [message_time] ASC We can see that the OnPostExecute for “Utility GetTargetLoadDatesPerETLIfcName” did indeed occur before the OnPreExecute event for “FELC Loop over TargetLoadDates”, they just did not get assigned an [event_message_id] in chronological order. We can speculate as to why that might be (I suspect the explanation is something to do with the two executables appearing in different packages) but the reason is not the important thing here, just be aware that you should be ordering by [message_time] rather than [event_message_id] if you want to get 100% accurate insights into your executions. @Jamiet

• Error encountered compiling kernel 2.6.35-25.44

  I downloaded the linux-source-2.6.35 package and tried to compile it using the command "fakeroot make-kpkg --append-to-version=.dbg kernel_image kernel_source kernel_headers --initrd" after "make menuconfig". The image .deb file is produced and installs fine, but an error stops the build process while trying to make the source package: scripts/Makefile.clean:17: /home/ade/linux-source-2.6.35/debian/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/crypto/Makefile: No such file or directory make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/home/ade/linux-source-2.6.35/debian/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/crypto/Makefile'. Stop. make: *** [_clean_crypto] Error 2 Sure enough, the folder linux-source-2.6.35/debian/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.35.10.dbg/crypto does not exist (although all of the other kernel source folders appear to be there). I haven't even been able to determine where the folder is supposed to be copied over, or what's supposed to invoke clean. Am I doing something wrong here? It should be noted that I am running 10.04.

  The two main concepts of Kanban is to keep the queues minimum and to maintain visibility. Management/leadership needs to make sure the Kanban Queue doesn’t get starved.  This is key and also very challenging, being the queue needs to be minimal but also can’t get too small during the course of work.  This is to maintain maximum velocity. Phases of the Kanban need to be kept flowing too, bottlenecks need removed ASAP when brought up. Victory Wall – I dig that idea.  Somewhere to look to see the success of the team. The POs work in Rally or other tools for some client management, but it causes issues with the lack of "visibility" – a key fundamental ideal & part of Kanban. One of the big issues is fitting things into a sprint, when Kanban is used with Scrum, but longer sprints are wasteful. Kanban work sizes are of a set size. At this point I got a bit side tracked by the actual conversation and missed out on note taking.  Overall, people doing Kanban and Lean Style Software Development I would say are some of the happiest coders around.  The clean focus, good velocity, sizing, and other approaches that are inferred by Kanban help developers be the rock stars and succeed. This is definitely a topic I will be commenting on a lot more in the near future.

  I did upgrade virtualbox from 4.1 to 4.2 wheneverver I want to load my win xp vdi, it gives me the following error: "Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary." I ran the suggested step to reinstall the kernel module, and the log file files is as follow: Makefile:181: * Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel.
