• Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

• Ubuntu, Gnome, PAM and ecryptfs

  I would like to have a directory accessible to a couple of users, and not readable by maintenance types ... I can do what I want using ecryptfs and a password known only to the "couple of users" in question, who then can mount the directory and use as they see fit. I would love to be able to automate that process and unlock the directory at login - again, only for the "couple users" in question, without asking a password. Gnome-keyring is able to store passphrases/passwords encrypted; and, apparently, if I could get a key identity to ecryptfs, Gnome PAM modules would allow the key with that identity to be unlocked, and the directory could be mounted. Alas, I have found no way to go from point A (Gnome PAM keyring module) to point B (use the unlocked key in ecryptfs). Another use of the same mechanism would allow to build a "key escrow" mechanism, where keys to encrypted volumes are safekept with, e.g., HR; so that company information in encrypted directories can be recovered if you pass under the proverbial bus.

  I am new to linux. I was using fedora and now switching to Ubuntu for a try. On Fedora my wireless network card was working OK from the OS install (I didnt had to do anything for it to work) On Ubuntu, with the lspci -v command, I get: Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R Subsystem: Ralink corp. RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 20 Memory at fe9e0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci Kernel modules: rt2800pci But I am not able to find any wireless network. For those who grew up in the 1970's and 1980's, you might remember Ronnie James Dio, lead singer of Black Sabbath after Ozzy was fired, and lead singer of his own band, Dio. Well, this DIO is not that Dio. This DIO is the OpenJDK Device I/O project which provides a Java-level API for accessing generic device peripherals on embedded devices, like your Raspberry Pi running Java SE Embedded software.   I have a in-built webcam in my Sony Vaio VGN-FE21M. lsusb shows me the device Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0ac8:c002 Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC1 and it is working within Skype most of the time. Sometimes, however, lsusb shows me the exact same output, but trying to test my cam in v4l2ucp I get the error Unable to open file /dev/video0 No such file or directory A reboot fixes the problem but I just can't pinpoint what the difference is between a working and a not working webcam and the time/instance this occurs. It would probably be a fix if i could unmount and remount the cam, but how can I do this with in-built devices? Any other advice is welcome as well.

• smartctl not returning on HBA that's secure-erasing a different drive

  Whenever I run smartctl -i /dev/sd* where * is a drive that is plugged into the same host bus adapter as another drive that is currently being erased with an hdparm secure erase command, the smart command will just 'hang' and not return (blocked) until the erasure of the other drive is finished. To make matters worse you can't cntrl-c out of it. Has anyone else had this issue? Is there another way to retrieve smart data from a drive, which doesn't block? I noticed that I can still use the udevadm command to retrieve the serial and model of the drive which is useful but doesn't appear to have any smart data. Any information relating to this matter is appreciated, especially if you can tell me another way to retrieve the S.M.A.R.T data that might work. Regards, Stuart

  Everything in Ubuntu One sync works great except bookmark sync. His problem is he keeps hearing terms that he hasn't heard of (i.e. NoSql, sharding, agure, sevice bus, etc.) and he would prefer to at least have a fighting chance of knowing something about them without having to be reactive and looking them up. Also I think he wants to have a big picture of all the emerging technologies and where they fit in together instead of just learning about each thing in isolation. He asked about blogs but I'm thinking print magazines may also help.

• Platform Builder: Disable the USB Driver Dialog

  For a long time, Windows CE developers and users have wanted to disable the USB Driver Dialog that is displayed when an unknown USB device is plugged into the host controller.   Of course the question is always why would you want to do such a thing? The simple answer is that there are USB devices that are needed, like printers, which expose multiple functions to the bus, like scanners and faxes, which no Windows CE driver exists to support.   So the printer quietly loads a driver, but then the other functions cause a dialog to be shown. One solution is to create a USB Class driver that loads by default if no other driver has been loaded. This driver just accepts anything that it sees and then does nothing with it. Starting with the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 March QFE/update, the USB 2.0 driver has a registry value to disable the dialog: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients]       "DoNotPromptUser"=dword:0   Setting the DoNotPromptUser value to 1 disables the dialog. The default value is zero, so the driver continues to behave in the same way it always did unless you change this registry value.     Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

  I am taking a wild shot here: I am a type 1 diabetic who is going on the Insulin pump. Unfortunately, the Medtronic Carelink USB device that uploads data from the pump online only has windows drivers. Has anybody managed to get this working under Ubuntu using Wine or by any other method: lsusb yields: Bus 001 Device 014: ID 0a21:8001 Medtronic Physio Control Corp. MMT-7305WW [Medtronic Minimed CareLink] I really don't want to buy a windows machine just for this, but it's probably one in a million that somebody else has managed to make this work under Linux.

If you have been following our plans in this area, you know that this is the release unifying BEA ALBPM product, which became Oracle BPM10gR3, with the Oracle stack. Some of the highlights of this release are: BPMN 2.0 modeling and simulation Web based Process Composer for BPMN and Rules authoring Zero-code environment with full access to Oracle SOA Suite’s rich set of application and other adapters Process Spaces – Out-of-box integration with Web Center Suite Process Analytics – Native process cubes as well as integration with Oracle BAM You can learn more about this release from the documentation. Notes about downloading and installing Please note that Oracle BPM Suite 11gR1 is delivered and installed as part of SOA 11.1.1.3.0, which is a sparse release (only incremental patch). To install: Download and install SOA 11.1.1.2.0, which is a full release (you can find the bits at the above location) Download and install SOA 11.1.1.3.0 During configure step (using the Fusion Middleware configuration wizard), use the Oracle Business Process Management template supplied with the SOA Suite11g (11.1.1.3.0) If you plan to use Process Spaces, also install Web Center 11.1.1.3.0, which also is delivered as a sparse release and needs to be installed on top of Web Center 11.1.1.2.0   SOA Suite 11gR1 Patch Set 2 (PS2) released by Demed L'Her We just released SOA Suite 11gR1 Patch Set 2 (PS2)! You can download it as usual from: OTN (main platforms only) eDelivery (all platforms) 11gR1 PS2 is delivered as a sparse installer, that is to say that it is meant to be applied on the latest full install (11gR1 PS1). That’s great for existing PS1 users who simply need to apply the patch and run the patch assistant – but an extra step for new users who will first need to download SOA Suite 11gR1 PS1 (in addition to the PS2 patch). What’s in that release? Bug fixes of course but also several significant new features.   Wow! Wellington is really a wonderful city - except for the weather situation But it was the first time that Roy and me did arrive to a workshop with a ferry boat. We flew in on Friday to Christchurch (btw, this was the longest customs and border control I've ever went through - and I traveled to Israel by Bus via Allenby Bridge from the West Bank some years ago - it took us two hours to go through immigration and customs in the night from Friday to Saturday) and drove up the Southern Island.   I (linux newbie) have a Dell XPS 17 and tried to install Ubuntu 12.04. After installation all WLAN accesspoints near are detected. But I can not connect (but I am able to connect with other computers as well as with Dell XPS 17 under windows). • can't login to new install of SQL 2008 x64 via SSMS

  I have performed a fresh install of SQL 2008 x64 on a fresh install of Server 2008 R2 x64 in an AD environment. Upon install completion, I cannot login to the SQL Instance via SSMS, with the following error: Login failed for user domain\user. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: ]. Background: the server is correctly joined to the AD Domain, the install was performed with defaults, windows authentication only (per organizational rules), the SQL install completes with no errors, domain\user was added as SQL Amin during setup account provisioning, I am logged into to console as domain\user when this error occurs, windows firewall is OFF, UAC is ON (an will never be turned off in accordance with organizational policy). To troubleshoot this error I have tried: Run SSMS as administrator: fail; Start SQL in single user mode, run SSMS: fail Start SQL in single user mode, run SSMS as administrator: Success Start SQL in single user mode, run SSMS as administrator, remove domain\user from sysadmin group, re-add, run SSMS: fail; Any combination and permutation of log off and log on, reboot, and chant gregorian prayers: fail; Reimage server with 2008 x64, slipstream SP2 into SQL 2008 install, all above troubleshooting steps are repeatable exactly, so I've narrowed this down to not being a SP issue; (this is NOT 2008 SQL R2) Any suggestion on how to grant management access to this fresh install of SQL 2008 via SSMS? Our organizational policy is no console access to servers, management will be done via management tools intalled on client workstations. domain\user is a group of 8 users whom will have SSMS installed on workstations. However, we can't even access SQL via SSMS from the console! We cannot deploy this in an environment where these 8 users will have to sneak into the server closet on the weekends and have console access to SQL and run SSMS as administrator.
