• Does Windows 7 have a Kiosk Mode?

  I'm writing a Kiosk on a Windows 7 computer. The Kiosk is on a touch screen computer, that will not have a keyboard. The application is a WPF application running the .NET Framework version 3.5. I'm having problems with the progress bar task bar showing up (blinking) at the bottom of the screen. This unfortunately gives the user access to the background operating system. Is there someway to lock a full screen application window into the front of the screen without using it on-top-of-everything mode. Some sort of Kiosk mode, or some tool that was designed for this.

  I often find myself working in unfamiliar languages. I like to read code written by others and then jump in and write something myself before going back and learning the corners of each language. To speed up this process, it really helps to know a few of the idioms you'll encounter ahead of time. Some of these, I've found are fairly unique. In Python you might do something like this: '\n'.join(listOfThings) Not all languages allow you to call methods on string literals like this. In C, you can write a loop like this: int i = 50; while(i--) { /* do something 50 times */ } C lets you decrement in the loop condition expression. Most more modern languages disallow this. Do you have any other good examples? I'm interested in often used constructions not odd corner cases.

  Hi, I have two identical databases with same structure, database a in computer a and database b in computer b. The data of database a*(a.accdb)* and database b*(b.accdb)* are different. then in database a i have for example ID:1, 2, 3 and in database B i Have ID:4,5,6 Then i need merge these databases data in only one database(a or b, doesn't matter) so the final database looks like. ID:1,2,3,4,5,6 I search an easy way to do this. because i have many tables. and do this by union query is so tedious. I search for example for a backup option for only data without scheme as in postgreSQl or many others RDBMS, but i don't see this options in access 2007. pd:only just table could be duplicate values(i guess that pk doesn't allow copy a duplicate value and all others values will be copied well). if i wrong please correct me. thanks for your help.

• What are the pros and cons of a non-fixed-interval update loop?

  I am studying various approaches to implementing a game loop and I have found this article. In the article the author implements a loop which, if the processing falls behind in time, skips frame renderings and just updates the game in a loop (the last variant called "Constant Game Speed independent of Variable FPS"). I do not understand why it is acceptable to call update_game() in a loop without making sure the update function is called at a particular interval. I do not see any value in doing this. I would think that in my game I want to be sure the game is updated periodically with a known period. So maybe it is worthwhile to have two threads, one would call update periodically, and the other one would redraw the game, also periodically? Would this be a good and practical approach? Of course I would need to synchronise the threads.

• Banshee keeps copying the same music files to my portable player over and over

  I have Banshee 2.6.0, and I connect my Android phone by USB to sync my music collection of about 1500 songs. For the most part, it works reliably. However, on every sync, it deletes, and then recopies the same 62 songs each time. After that, everything works, and the sync completes successfully. As far as I can tell, these 62 songs are mostly recent additions to my collection, but not all of them, and I can't see any other commonality of significance. This is only a problem because the transfer speed when working within Banshee is quite slow, so this is eating up time. Sometimes I need to make a transfer and go, but I can't, because I'll have to wait for progress bars take their sweet time. I have tried to completely clear out the music files on the phone and resync. I have tried rescanning the music collection. What do I do to fix this irritation?

  I've been reading about collision detection and I saw that the first part was a coarse detection which generates possible contacts using bounding box hierarchies. I understand the concept of splitting up your objects in groups, to speed up the detection phase, but I'm a little confused on how do you actually build the hierachy, more so on what criteria is used to group them together. Do I iterate through all the objects in the scene, and check the distance between them to see where they should be inserted in the tree? • Slow transfer to external USB3 hard drive

  Trying to backup data from hard drive before reloading windows following some issue with its load. Having trouble with the file transfer to a USB3/2 external hard drive NTFS. Getting transfer speed of about 116.7kB/sec. In other words its taking about 5 hours to transfer 1.4GB. I've got about 80GB to go. So the transfer is going to take 11days. Seems a little on the slow side. Am I missing something? Is there a way to make this faster. No issue with the external drive transferring this amount in windows. But don't have that option at the moment.

However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. But we studied computer science and we have an idea but we found that this is the best place to ask the question and expect the right answer from you. Should we use ASP.NET for example? or PHP?   Fibonacci numbers have become a popular introduction to recursion for Computer Science students and there's a strong argument that they persist within nature. For these reasons, many of us are familiar with them. They also exist within Computer Science elsewhere too; in surprisingly efficient data structures and algorithms based upon the sequence. There are two main examples that come to mind: Fibonacci heaps which have better amortized running time than binomial heaps. Fibonacci search which shares O(log N) running time with binary search on an ordered array. Is there some special property of these numbers that gives them an advantage over other numerical sequences? Is it a density quality? What other possible applications could they have? It seems strange to me as there are many natural number sequences that occur in other recursive problems, but I've never seen a Catalan heap.

  Hey, I've got a 2D projectile code sample working, but would like to extend it to 3D. How would I calculate the initial velocity of the Z-axis? At the moment, I've got: initVel.X = (float)Math.Cos(45.0); initVel.Y = (float)Math.Sin(45.0); How would I convert this to work in 3D (and add the initial velocity for the Z-axis)? In my example, X is across, Y is up down and Z is going into the screen. I also normalize the vector and multiply it by the speed. Thanks

• How do I get my RTL8192ce based wireless device working properly?

  I am using the rtl8192cu chipset (on a Belkin wireless USB adapter N300) combined with 64 bit architecture and the 3.8 kernel. Some of you may know that this doesn't work. I tried this fix - RTL8188CU USB Network Adaptor on ubuntu 13.04 and now my internet is super slow. I am totally new to Ubuntu and I am concerned I do not have the right driver. The "stock" driver was the RTL8192cu, but it didn't connect 99% of the time and if it did the upload speed was higher than the download. Right now I am connecting through my laptop with a crossover cable, so my internet connection is just fine in my apartment. Relevant output from lsusb is here: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 050d:2103 Belkin Components F7D2102 802.11n N300 Micro Wireless Adapter v3000 [Realtek RTL8192CU] (bonus question: is that [050d:2103] the actual physical address straight from the hardware? Or does it change when I put different drivers on it? I am concerned I do not have the right driver)

• Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop Sharing resolution

  I have 11.10 running on a Netbook with Unity2D @ 1024x600 resolution. I VNC into my Ubuntu Netbook from Win7 @ 1920x1200. Is there a way make Desktop Sharing on 11.10 run at a resolution higher than the hardware resolution? I am not too worried about speed/lag. 1440x900 would be perfect. I like to keep my machine as clean as possible, I could add eg. vnc4server but I'd prefer not to do that. I have looked for but cannot find an appropriate vino-server config file. Thank you.

• Boot time seems unusually long on MSI GX660R (bootchart included)

  After upgrading (clean install) to Ubuntu 12.04, the speed issue when running programs has reduced on my MSI GX660R laptop. However, the boot time is still much longer (over a minute, even after BIOS) than on the many less powerful laptops I have encountered running the same OS, and I was wondering if anyone could help me improve it. I use the FGLRX driver, if that makes any difference. I have uploaded a boot chart, it can be found here http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/bootchartl.png/ As you can see, the boot time is over a minute even after BIOS. A 'designed for Vista' laptop from ages ago which I installed Ubuntu on boots in around thirty seconds, so I think it's a bit strange. • CUDA driver installation on a laptop with nVidia NVS140M card

  I'm trying to first figure out if my computer contains a CUDA-enabled card. It has an nVidia NVS 140M card, but I can't seem to figure out if it is the 128 MB version or 256 MB version. On the laptop purchase receipt, I found out that I ordered the 128 MB version, but the control panel description of the card said otherwise as shown below: When I ran the CUDA driver from nVidia's site, it cannot find a hardware compatible with CUDA (even though the product series is CUDA-enabled, the card does not have 256 MB minimum of memory to do so). What would be your recommendations in this case with trying to use CUDA on this computer (I'm not sure if nothing can be done at this point)? Thanks in advance.

• Images from remote source - is it possible or is it bad practice?

  I'm building a management system for websites and I had an idea related to image galleries. I'm not sure it's a good approach. Since image space needed is related to how many images a user might upload, I thought about using cloud services like DropBox, Mega, and Google Drive to store images and load then when needed. The obvious problem with this approach is that downloading the images from the 3rd party service would hamper the user experience due to the increased download times. Is there any way to save images belonging in an image gallery on remote source without hampering the user experience because of speed? Or is this approach really not a good practice?

  Hm ... you might ask yourself why there are no Oracle Database 12c slides available for download, neither in the OOW 2012 content system nor on our blog (and I believe nowhere else). Simple reason: As long as Oracle Database 12c is not released and available we are not allowed to offer slides for download. Therefore people were simply taking pictures during the 12c sessions with their phones, iPods and cameras. Roy took a nice shot: Sorry for that - we'll make the content available as soon as Oracle Database 12c gets released. In between you can download our OOW 2012 talk Database Upgrades on Steroids: Real Speed, Real Customers, Real Secrets as PDF (3.4MB) - but the 12c content is currently not in that PDF.
