  • Security: Managing network shares remotely on Ubuntu?

    Hi everyone, I am about to setup a home network server running Ubuntu Server and I'm currently a bit worried about how to handle network shares and permissions in a good way. After working a bit lately with Netgears ReadyNAS's units, I have become really spoiled with how easy it was to set up network shares and giving a specific user different levels of network access to a specific share (forbidden access, read, read/write). How would I accomplish the same with my Ubuntu server through SSH? Thanks a lot

  • What is the best way to keep a folder synchronized with my USB drive?

    I know there is a similar topic on syncing between computers, but I'm looking for an application to run on one computer that will sync a "document/file" folder with a folder on my secondary/external USB drive. What would be the best solution? I know I could use Dropbox & Live Mesh, but they use up bandwith which isn't very good when I drop in a lot of large files. I'm running Windows 7, but I assume any solution for Windows Vista would work just fine.

  • How to keep SpamAssassin up to date under CentOS?

    I am running CentOS 5.4 with SpamAssassin installed via yum. However the version yum installed was SpamAssassin version 3.2.5 and I am finding that this version has many outdated rules -- including a rule FH_DATE_PAST_20XX which marks all email from the year 2010 and forward as spam. Not good. yum says SpamAssassin is up to date -- what can I do to make yum keep SpamAssassin really up to date?

  • Sync my files across multiple computers

    I do a lot of work on my home computer, ranging from programming, writing stored procedures and writing documentation and reporting. A lot of this work is university related and constantly swapping files across several computers is annoying at best. I have a large final-year project coming up and I'm going to be sharing this work amongst home and university and require some kind of online storage that provides version control for my programs, as well as my Word documents, PDF's and saved academic papers.   • Nagios not accepting regex in command

    I have this command defined: define command{ command_name check_http_sane command_line $USER1$/check_http -H $HOSTNAME$ -r "HTTP/1.1 (200|301|302|303|304|307|401|418|426)" } When I run it manually on command line, it works fine, but nagios (2.6) reports a "pattern not found" error. Do I need to escape something? Edit: As stated below, I solved it by replacing check_http with my own script which works (good enough for our use case, anyway). Script: http://pastebin.com/hNmz6Wa1

    So with free output what we care about with application memory usage is generally the amount of free memory in the -/+ buffers/cache line. What about with database applications such as Oracle, is it important to have a good amount of cached and buffers available for a database to run well with all the IO? If that makes any sense, how do you figure out just how much?

I tried HWMonitor and it works great except it doesn't have live logging. I need live logging because the system I'm using seems to overheat and shutdown (assuming it's related to overheating) and I'd like to catch the failing point.

    I was considering using Google Sites to host some webpages with HTML5 and JavaScript experiments I'm trying out, but it seems that they don't allow JavaScript. Does anybody have any good suggestions for a free web hosting service where I can upload simple HTML/CSS & JavaScript experiments? I don't have large bandwidth needs, nor do I need a WYSIWYG editor.     I'm too cheap and stingy to buy a proper USB infrared receiver for my PC, however my phone (Nokia N95) has a receiver built in. I know for a fact that there must be some API to access it (for Tx at least) as the irRemote works. Is there any good programs available or how would I start to set up so that my phone sends all the iR data captured by it over Wifi or Bluetooth to my Windows PC for use in XBMC or other programs?

  • small IIS web farm-create an Active Directory domain or no?

    We have a smallish web farm of < 5 Windows 2008 servers. Some do data, most do IIS hosting. Is it a good/bad idea to set up a domain controller and put all in the same "production" domain? We want to avoid a world where we have to sync multiple admin passwords between the boxes (or share admin credentials among the team). Presumably, the DC would be just another VM, so hardware cost doesn't enter into the discussion.

  • Best program for keeping track of Time (motor racing)

    I need a program to control time, I need the time to go forth and back (for me to choose) and I insert the staring time. I also need a program to control lap times. If anyone know any program for these stuff (racing stuff), I would apreciate it, even if there only are paid solution, I still would like to take a look at them (I staring to make a program in python and it could be good for inspiration)
