• Reading component parameters and setting defaults

  I'm pulling my hair on this because it should be simple, but can't get it to do the right thing. What's the best practice way of doing the following I've created a custom component that extends <s:Label> so now the Label has additional properties color2 color3 value which can be called like this and are used in the skin. <s:CustomLabel text="Some text" color2="0x939202" color3="0x999999" value="4.5" /> If I don't supply these parameters, I'd like some defaults to be set. So far I've had some success, but it doesn't work 100% of the time, which leads me to think that I'm not following best practices when setting those defaults. I do it now like this: [Bindable] private var myColor2:uint = 0x000000; [Bindable] private var myColor3:uint = 0x000000; [Bindable] private var myValue:Number = 10.0; then in the init function, I do a variation of this to set the default myValue = hostComponent.value; myValue = (hostComponent.value) ? hostComponent.value : 4.5; Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, depending on the type of variable I'm trying to set. I eventually decided to read them as Strings then convert them to the desired type, but it seems that this also works half the time.

• C# To VB.Net Conversion - array of class objects with initialisation

• structured vs. unstructured data in db

  the question is one of design. i'm gathering a big chunk of performance data with lots of key-value pairs. pretty much everything in /proc/cpuinfo, /proc/meminfo/, /proc/loadavg, plus a bunch of other stuff, from several hundred hosts. right now, i just need to display the latest chunk of data in my UI. i will probably end up doing some analysis of the data gathered to figure out performance problems down the road, but this is a new application so i'm not sure what exactly i'm looking for performance-wise just yet. i could structure the data in the db -- have a column for each key i'm gathering. the table would end up being O(100) columns wide, it would be a pain to put into the db, i would have to add new columns if i start gathering a new stat. but it would be easy to sort/analyze the data just using SQL. or i could just dump my unstructured data blob into the table. maybe three columns -- host id, timestamp, and a serialized version of my array, probably using JSON in a TEXT field. which should I do? am i going to be sorry if i go with the unstructured approach? when doing analysis, should i just convert the fields i'm interested in and create a new, more structured table? what are the trade-offs i'm missing here?

• In a digital photo, how can I detect if a mountain is obscured by clouds?

  The problem I have a collection of digital photos of a mountain in Japan. However the mountain is often obscured by clouds or fog. What techniques can I use to detect that the mountain is visible in the image? I am currently using Perl with the Imager module, but open to alternatives. All the images are taken from the exact same position - these are some samples. My naïve solution I started by taking several horizontal pixel samples of the mountain cone and comparing the brightness values to other samples from the sky. This worked well for differentiating good image 1 and bad image 2. However in the autumn it snowed and the mountain became brighter than the sky, like image 3, and my simple brightness test started to fail. Image 4 is an example of an edge case. I would classify this as a good image since some of the mountain is clearly visible. UPDATE 1 Thank you for the suggestions - I am happy you all vastly over-estimated my competence. Based on the answers, I have started trying the ImageMagick edge-detect transform, which gives me a much simpler image to analyze. convert sample.jpg -edge 1 edge.jpg I assume I should use some kind of masking to get rid of the trees and most of the clouds. Once I have the masked image, what is the best way to compare the similarity to a 'good' image? I guess the "compare" command suited for this job? How do I get a numeric 'similarity' value from this?

• JVM/CLR Source-compatible Language Options

  I have an open source Java database migration tool (http://www.liquibase.org) which I am considering porting to .Net. The majority of the tool (at least from a complexity side) is around logic like "if you are adding a primary key and the database is Oracle use this SQL. If database is MySQL use this SQL. If the primary key is named and the database is Postgres use this SQL". I could fork the Java codebase and covert it (manually and/or automatically), but as updates and bug fixes to the above logic come in I do not want to have to apply it to both versions. What I would like to do is move all that logic into a form that can be compiled and used by both Java and .Net versions naively. The code I am looking to convert does not contain any advanced library usage (JDBC, System.out, etc) that would vary significantly from Java to .Net, so I don't think that will be an issue (at worst it can be designed around). So what I am looking for is: A language in which I can code common parts of my app in and compile it into classes usable by the "standard" languages on the target platform Does not add any runtime requirements to the system Nothing so strange that it scares away potential contributors I know Python and Ruby both have implementations on for the JVM and CLR. How well do they fit my requirements? Has anyone been successful (or unsuccesful) using this technique for cross-platform applications? Are there any gotcha's I need to worry about?

• Write a compiler for a language that looks ahead and multiple files?

  In my language I can use a class variable in my method when the definition appears below the method. It can also call methods below my method and etc. There are no 'headers'. Take this C# example. class A { public void callMethods() { print(); B b; b.notYetSeen(); public void print() { Console.Write("v = {0}", v); } int v=9; } class B { public void notYetSeen() { Console.Write("notYetSeen()\n"); } } How should I compile that? what i was thinking is: pass1: convert everything to an AST pass2: go through all classes and build a list of define classes/variable/etc pass3: go through code and check if there's any errors such as undefined variable, wrong use etc and create my output But it seems like for this to work I have to do pass 1 and 2 for ALL files before doing pass3. Also it feels like a lot of work to do until I find a syntax error (other than the obvious that can be done at parse time such as forgetting to close a brace or writing 0xLETTERS instead of a hex value). My gut says there is some other way. Note: I am using bison/flex to generate my compiler.

• Mysql latin1 turkish data and delphi 2010 utf8

  Hello, I have tables collating latin1_general_ci and have turkish character values. And i can use this data on delphi 7+zeos with no problem. but i want to upgrade my delphi to 2010 version but zeos too slow as i saw. so i want to use odbc+ado or dbexpress solution. dbexpress solution works fine , display my data as entered and write as entered table without any change to column charset. but dbexpress has problems as i saw. for example when i select * from table which has column types as varchar,decimal,int,tinyint,text give av errors on xp systems. vista and 7 does not give any error and work fine(not fully tested). ado solution(dbgo) works fine but its not show my data as entered.its want everything be utf. but i don't want to convert my data to utf before test everything. how can i see my data as entered and write client side utf and store latin1(as zeos or dbexpress do). i was tried many other options. eg. mysql side collation and charset parameters. sorry for my bad english. i hope someone understand me. thanks.

• Regex to extract portions of file name

  I have text files formatted as such: R156484COMP_004A7001_20100104_065119.txt I need to consistently extract the R****COMP, the 004A7001 number, 20100104 (date), and don't care about the 065119 number. the problem is that not ALL of the files being parsed have the exact naming convention. some may be like this: R168166CRIT_156B2075_SU2_20091223_123456.txt or R285476COMP_SU1_125A6025_20100407_123456.txt So how could I use regex instead of split to ensure I am always getting that serial (ex. 004A7001), the date (ex. 20100104), and the R****COMP (or CRIT)??? • UIView coordinate transforms on rotation during keyboard appearance

  iPad app; I'm trying to resize my view when the keyboard appears. It amounts to calling this code at appropriate times: CGRect adjustedFrame = self.frame; adjustedFrame.size.height -= keyboardFrame.size.height; [self setFrame:adjustedFrame]; Using this technique for a view contained in a uisplitview-based app works in all 4 orientations, but I've since discovered that a vanilla uiview-based app does not work. What happens is that apparently the uisplitview is smart enough to convert the coordinates of its subviews (their frame) such that the origin is in the "viewer's top left" regardless of the orientation. However, a uiview is not able to correctly report these coordinates. Though the origin is reported as (0,0) in all orientations, the view's effective origin is always as if the ipad were upright. What is weird about this is that the view correctly rotates and draws, but it always originates in the literal device top left. How can I get the view to correctly make its origin the "top left" to the viewer, not the device's fixed top left? What am I missing? Please, for something so trivial I've spent about 6 hours on this already with every brute force technique and research angle I could think of.   Hi there I have installed VisualAssert and cFix. I have been using Visual Studio C++ and programming in CLI/C++. I have a working Chess Game Program that works perfectly by itself.....and I have been studying testing and have many examples(with tutorials) I have found on the net, that compile and run in Visual Studio..... • Simple, fast SQL queries for flat files.

  Does anyone know of any tools to provide simple, fast queries of flat files using a SQL-like declarative query language? I'd rather not pay the overhead of loading the file into a DB since the input data is typically thrown out almost immediately after the query is run. Consider the data file, "animals.txt": dog 15 cat 20 dog 10 cat 30 dog 5 cat 40 Suppose I want to extract the highest value for each unique animal. I would like to write something like: cat animals.txt | foo "select $1, max(convert($2 using decimal)) group by $1" I can get nearly the same result using sort: cat animals.txt | sort -t " " -k1,1 -k2,2nr And I can always drop into awk from there, but this all feels a bit awkward (couldn't resist) when a SQL-like language would seem to solve the problem so cleanly. I've considered writing a wrapper for SQLite that would automatically create a table based on the input data, and I've looked into using Hive in single-processor mode, but I can't help but feel this problem has been solved before. Am I missing something? Is this functionality already implemented by another standard tool? Halp!

  Hi guys, I'm using spring, all my annotated entity class information are put in the ApplicationContext.xml. I'm using a MySql database, now how can I use the SchemaExport function in hibernate to create the tables? My application can't create the table automatically, though i have set <prop key="hbm2ddl.auto">create</prop>.   Hello everybody, Today my question is about date formats and strings. My application downloads some strings representing dates from the internet. The date format is always like this: "2010-05-24 at 20:45" I need to convert this string into an NSDate object in order to perform some date manipulations. I tried this code: NSString * dateString = @"2010-05-24 at 20:45" // actually downloaded from the internet NSDateFormatter * myDateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init]; [myDateFormatter setDateFormat:@"yyyy-MM-dd 'at' HH:mm"]; NSDate * dateFromString = [myDateFormatter dateFromString:dateString]; This seems to work perfectly fine as long as the iPhone is set to 24h clock. As long as I switch to 12h clock in the general settings the NSDate object is not created (and the application happily crashes) I have read others having similar problems but I don't seem to find a solution. Now the questions: It doesn't make sense to me that the NSDateFormatter is sensible to user settings as long as I am specifying which format it is supposed to use to parse the string (which is not modifiable because it comes from the web), what's the use of checking user settings? More important, how can I get my task performed (to get an NSDate object from the string regardless the user settings)?

  When using a SAX parser, parsing fails when there is a " in the node content. How can I resolve this? Do I need to convert all " characters? In other words, anytime I have a quote in a node: <node>characters in node containing "quotes"</node> That node gets butchered into multiple character arrays when the Handler is parsing it. Is this normal behaviour? Why should quotes cause such a problem?   Hello all, I've got a CSV file with a format that looks like this: "FieldName1", "FieldName2", "FieldName3", "FieldName4" "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008", "7.59484916392", "10", "6.552373" "04/13/2010 14:45:22.010", "6.55478493312", "9", "3.5378543" ... Note that there are double quote characters at the start and end of each line in the CSV file, and the "," string is used to delimit fields within each line. When I try to read this into numpy via: import numpy as np data = np.genfromtxt(csvfile, dtype=None, delimiter=',', names=True) all the data gets read in as string values, surrounded by double-quote characters. Not unreasonable, but not much use to me as I then have to go back and convert every column to its correct type When I use delimiter='","' instead, everything works as I'd like, except for the 1st and last fields. As the start of line and end of line characters are a single double-quote character, this isn't seen as a valid delimiter for the 1st and last fields, so they get read in as e.g. "04/13/2010 14:45:07.008 and 6.552373" - note the leading and trailing double-quote characters respectively. Because of these redundant characters, numpy assumes the 1st and last fields are both String types; I don't want that to be the case Is there a way of instructing numpy to read in files formatted in this fashion as I'd like, without having to go back and "fix" the structure of the numpy array after the initial read?

• VLC desktop streaming

  Edit I stopped using VLC and switched to GMax FLV Encoder. It does a much better job IMO. Original post I am sending my desktop (screen) as an H264 video stream to another machine that saves it to a file using the follwoing command lines: Sender of the stream: vlc -I dummy --sout='#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=512,scale=0.5} :rtp{mux=ts,dst=192.168.0.1,port=4444}' Receiver of the stream: vlc -I rc rtp://@:4444 --sout='#std{access=file,mux=ps,dst=/home/user/output.mp4}' --ipv4 This works, but there are a few issues: The file is not playable with most players. VLC is able to playback the file but with some weirdness: = it takes about 10 seconds before the playback actually begins. = seeking doesn't work. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to fix these issues? EDIT: I made a little progress. The initial delay in playback is because the player is waiting for a keyframe. By forcing the sender of the stream to create a new key-frame every 4 seconds I could decrease the delay: :screen-fps=10 --sout='#transcode{vcodec=h264,venc=x264{keyint=40},vb=512,scale=0.5} :rtp{mux=ts,dst=192.168.0.1,port=4444}' The seeking problem is not solved however, but I understand it a little better. The RTP stream is saved as a file in its original streaming format, which is normally not playable as a regular video file. VLC manages to play this file, but most other players don't. So I need to convert it to a regular video file. I am currently investigating whether I can do this with ffmpeg if I provide it with an SDP file for the recorded stream. All help is welcome!

  When I'm testing with WatiN, I like to save screenshots. Sometimes I don't really need a picture of the whole browser window though - I just want a picture of the element that I'm testing. My attempt to save a picture of an element with the code below resulted in a picture of a block box, because elementBounds.Top points to a pixel position way past the bottom of the screen. The elementBounds.Width and .Height values also appear to be about half what they should be. • using .NET web service (Dataset) from progress OpenEdge 4GL

  I created web service in C# .net with input parameter : DataSet in other side, i need to use this web service from progress OpenEdge 4GL 10.1 (not 10.2) the problem is Dataset in OpenEdge cant match with DataSet in .net. always return 0 in the result I'm C# programmer, so dont have deep knowledge in porgress. • Running another process without GUI freezing

  I'm having trouble getting my GUI to appear and not freeze while running (and waiting for) an outside process. In this case, drivers.exe is a very simply program where the user simply clicks "OK". So whenever I click OK, it exits. I am trying to simply make my status strip count numbers up (really fast) as drivers.exe is executing.
