• Data binding in web UI frameworks, what's the deal?

  I believe that most of modern Web frameworks that pretend to be MVC ones also has a notion of data binding in one form or another. Examples: AngularJS, EmberJS, KnockoutJS, etc. I am assuming that "data binding" is a declarative definition (oxymoron, no?) of live link between data (a.k.a. model) and its representation (a.k.a. view). With some transformers in between (a.k.a. controllers). I understand why declarativeness is kind of appealing but also understand that as usual it comes with the price. In particular: 1. Live binding is quite heavy, either with dirty watch (high CPU consumption) or with Object.observe() (high memory consumption with high CPU load in some scenarios). 2. There is a "frame" part in the framework word, means there are some boundaries/limits that can be hard to overcome if you need slightly more than it was designed for. Quite usual time split: 90% of features are made in 10% of project time. But 10% rest take 90% of project time. I suspect (a.k.a. educated guess) that those MVC things are not helping to implement more functionality in less time... If so their usage motivation is not quite clear. As an example: last week wanted to find virtual list idea/solution. Found one in vanilla JavaScript that is 120 LOC. Implementation of the same but in AngualrJS is about 420 LOC. Most of the code there seems like a fight with the framework itself... So is my question: what benefits that MVC stuff or data binding give us? Is it just a buzzword popular among project managers or they give us something useful. If later one then what exactly?

  2013 will see significant changes in priorities and initiatives among procurement professionals as they balance the needs of their enterprises with efforts to add capabilities for long-term procurement success. In response, procurement managers will expand their organization’s spend influence via supplier relationship management, sourcing, and category management. These findings are part of the new report, “2013 Procurement Key Issues: Going Deeper and Broader to Deliver Borderless Procurement Services,” by the Hackett Group. The authors say that compared to similar studies over the last five years, 2013 is registering the greatest year-over-year changes in priorities for both procurement performance and capability issues. Three Important PrioritiesThe survey found that procurement professionals are focusing their attention in three key areas. Cost reduction. Controlling expenses is always a high priority, but with 90 percent of the respondents now placing this at the top of their performance concerns, the Hackett analysts say this “clearly shows that, for better or worse, cost reduction is king” in 2013. Technology innovation. Innovation has shot up significantly in the priority rankings and is now tied with spend influence for second among procurement professionals. Sixty-five percent of the survey participants said pursuing game-changing innovation and technology is a top procurement initiative. Managing supply risk. This area registered a sharp rise in importance because of its role in protecting profits, Hackett says. Today I stumbled upon this little nugget from former SSIS product team member Matt Carroll: March 2012 – December 2012 (10 months)Redmond, WA Took ownership of the SQL 2012 Data Quality Services box product and re-architected and extended it to become a cloud service. • Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. Comments should be sent to public-wcag2ict-comments-AT-w3.org. • Good SLA

  © 2011 Dov Trietsch What is a good SLA? I have frequently pondered about Service Level Agreements (SLA). Yesterday after ordering and while waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the food to arrive, I passed the time reading and re-reading the restaurant menu (again and again..) until I noticed their very interesting SLA.   Because (as promised) we had to wait even longer and the conversation around me was mostly in Russian, I ended doodling some of my thoughts of the menu, on the menu. People are both providers and consumers of services. As a service consumer – maybe the SLA above sucks – though to be honest, had the service been better, I would not have noticed this and you, the reader, would have been spared this rambling monograph. As a provider, I think it’s great! Because I provide services in the form of business software, I extend the idea to the following principles of design: 1: Wygiwyg. You guessed it. What You Get Is What You Get. 2: Ugiwugi.  U Get It When U Get It. How’s this for a developer friendly SLA? I’ll never be off the spec, or late. And BTW, the food was good, so when I finally got what I got, I liked it. That's All Folks!!

• Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs)

  I downloaded 12.04.1 and md5 sum checked them and everything is good. Made a live usb and booted up... Just gets to where its about to start with the purple ubuntu loading screen then it goes back to text and gives this message: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on ///filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs This happens in the live option, or persistent even the file checking one doesn't work Also I've tried a few different F6 options to no avail. I used 'LiLi USB creator' and 'unetbootin' and also 'Universal USB Installer,' all with the same results. I've also tried using a VM and it showed the same. That is when I figured I had a corrupt .iso so I downloaded it again checked the MD5: e235b63c02644e219b7bf3668f479c9e. Only I'm having the same problem. I'm just about ready to give up on 12.04.1 and just go back to 10.04 utill the next LTS comes out. I've got a dell mini 10 btw. Thanks for your time.

  I recently purchased an Intel 520 120GB SSD and installed Ubuntu on it. Occasionally my system will freeze and I will have to ALT-PRINT SCREEN-REISUB to reboot. Sometimes it will reboot and work just fine. Other times it just hangs at a flashing prompt. If I boot from a Live USB I can run Boot-Repair and it will usually reboot fine the next go round. I have noticed today that when I am running the live USB and open Nautilus my SSD partitions will sporadically disappear and reappear. Even if they are mounted. I was thinking it was a poor connection, but I have tried a different SATA cable and a different SATA port. Is it possible I have a faulty SSD, or is there something different you have to do with SSDs to make sure they stay mounted (I was thinking like it has some sort of goofy power savings feature that needs to be disabled). I found the place in the bios where the SATA ports are listed. They are all set to AHCI(Chipset - SATA Mode = AHCI) The unmounting/remounting happens all the time. • Blogging from Office RT

  During the last Build conference all attendees were given a brand new sparkling exciting Surface RT device (I love that machine despite its name but that's beside the point). On it came a version of Office 2013 RT, or better: the preview version. Now, I translated that term "Preview" to "Beta". Which is OK, since I've been using a lot of beta products from Microsoft and they all were great. And then I wanted to post a blogposting from Word. I knew I could, I have been doing this for a long time (I prefer Live Writer but that isn't available on Windows 8 RT). So I wrote the entry and hit "Publish". Instead of my blogsite I got a nice non-descriptive error telling me I couldn't post. So I fired up my other (Intel based) Win8 tablet, opened Word RT Preview, it loaded my blogpost (you've got to love the automatic synchronization through Skydrive) and tried from that machine. Same error. So, I installed Live Writer (remember, the other machine is Intel based) and posted from there. That worked like a charm. Apparently, there was something wrong with Word. I gave up and didn't think about it anymore. Yet… what you're reading now is written in Word 2013 RT on my Surface RT. So what did do? Simple: I updated from the Preview version to the final version. That's all there was to it. So…. If you're still on the preview I urge you to upgrade. You need to go to the "classic desktop update" window instead of going through the Windows Store App style update since Office is a desktop system, but once you do that you'll have the full version as well. • How to solve SocketException: Permission denied: connect

  I recently encountered a problem getting a headache, need help... System consists of: Two subsystems, called A, B (each running on a standalone tomcat instance), currently running on the same machine. A invoke B's service via spring httpInvoker(http). B system also invoke other system's services via http. Symptoms: 1, the system starts to run normally after 10-15 days; 2, the system will run for a period of time after an exception: org.springframework.remoting.RemoteAccessException: Could not access HTTP invoker remote service at [http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/remoting/call]; nested exception is java. net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect 3, when the exception occour, it continues, not only occasional .(it looks like some resources exhausted, but cpu rate < 5%, memory < 15%, network < 5%) 4, A, B when the system call fails, B system via http call to an external service also failed for the same exception. 5, closed two tomcat services, restart, and working properly. So repeatedly (step 1 - 5), has not found the root reason. Emvironment: windows 2008 R2 tomcat7.0.42 x86_64 oralce-jdk-1.7.0_40 Any ideas?

• Which .NET REST approach/technology/tool should I use?

  I am implementing a RESTful web service and several client applications that are mostly in Silverlight. I am finding a litany of options for developing both the server-side and client-side of the API but am not sure which is the best approach. I'm concerned about stability as well as a platform that will continue to exist a few months from now. We started using the REST Starter Kit with .NET 3.5 but moved to the new WCF Web API when updating to .NET 4.0. All of their documentation indicates that WCF Web API is the replacement for the RSK. However, Web API is only in Preview 4 and does not include support for Silverlight or Windows Phone 7 clients (yet). WCF Web API looks like a wrapper on top of the WCF WebHttp Services stuff provided in the System.ServiceModel.Web library which makes me think that maybe it would be simpler to just go with the built-in stuff but Web API does offer some nice features. I am specifically tied-up trying to determine the best course for the client-side. My main requirement is that I need to support deserializing into my client-side objects quickly and easily. The Web API offers a nice client library but doesn't have a Silverlight version. I'd like to use the latest approach and the toolset that is being actively developed and supported. Is the REST Starter Kit really obsolete? Has anyone had any success implementing the WCF Web API toolkit? Is there merit to using either of these over the built-in WCF WebHttp Services features found in System.ServiceModel.Web? Is there a single solution that works for any client (web, Silverlight, etc.)? What suggestions do you have?

  Yesterday the Tell Us Once project received it’s latest accolade. My partner in crime in the execution of the delivery of software for this project, Mark Usher,  reports: It’s always great to receive recognition for the effort you put in when working on a project. It’s no secret that here at Solidsoft we are extremely proud of our association with the Government’s Tell Us Once (TUO) programme. Having already been selected by Microsoft as Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) 2011 Award Winners for Application Integration, we are very pleased that the TUO programme as a whole has been recognised and has won the Guardian Newspaper’s Innovation Nation Award for Frontline Services (link to http://www.guardian.co.uk/innovation-nation-awards )  The TUO entry was judged the winner over three other shortlisted solutions from Dyfed Powys Police, North Yorkshire County Council and Staffordshire County Council. Innovation Nation is a partnership between Virgin Media Business and the Guardian, an initiative to uncover the most innovative businesses, public sector organisations and charities in the UK today.  Its aim is to showcase the ideas, the endeavour and the energy that are making things better in the areas of customer service, unique working practices, frontline government services and collaboration. Solidsoft have been involved with the Tell Us Once programme since its inception in 2007 and worked closely with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to produce a business case for the programme. Teaming up with Atos (who host the application) Solidsoft delivered the first national solution in 2011 and a second phase in April 2012. Whilst currently restricted to distributing citizen data to central government organisations and local government authorities, DWP is now actively engaging with the private sector to see if TUO data can be disclosed to private sector organisations such as banks and building societies. Solidsoft welcome this expansion into the private sector where even more efficiencies will be realised.
