• Autotest notifications on Ubuntu virtual environment

  I am having trouble getting Rails autotest notifications to work on the Engine Yard Vagrant environment. On the Mac, I normally get the notifications via Growl. However, on the virtual environment (which runs Ubuntu) that doesn't work. I tried running Linux notification setups such as libnotify+autotest-notification, but I get the following error: libnotify-Message: Unable to get session bus: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_connect_signal: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed ** (notify-send:1004): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_proxy_call: assertion `DBUS_IS_G_PROXY (proxy)' failed Another path would be to have Growl receive the notifications remotely, but I don't even know where to begin with that... Any suggestions?

• Station ID - more than IP

  Hello I am working on internal PHP application where users login only from our network (we are on dedicated IP and application is checking $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] and if is match our IP go thru if not - Bye However how I can identify from which station user is login ? Using cookie not gonna work - those are windows station working under control MS StedyState and all cookies are deleted every login I don't need nothing fancy like full MAC address just any unique ID (can not be application username - because users use different stations) Any ideas ? Maybe Javascript is able to grab some Unique detail from station's browser (IE 8) and pass this as hidden input? bensiu

• Connect to an existing process

  Hole thing is happening on the mac os x. Let's assume that I've opened an program by clicking on an .app icon. It's a python program with GUI which has a separate process that waits for a user input. But as I've opened it by clickin .app icon I dont have access to it's input as I would have if I opened it in Terminal. And the question is: How can I connect new Terminal window to this running program? I tried pipes but I'm not sure how to use them correctly. My guess was to find PID of the app that is running and then pipe to this program by giving a PID. But I have no idea how to do it. I hope you were able to understand what's the problem. Sorry for my weak english :)

• Building XCode From Command Line Issues (Updating Entitlements file location)

  The first error is a warning for complier 'com.apple.compilers.gcc.4_0' I don't know if this is okay and I can just not worry about it. The second tells me that my entitlements file is no longer at that location. I know this and I thought I had correctly updated it in Xcode's info window. This project builds fine in Xcode. • HTML Audio performance

  I'm working on HTML drum machine, and I`ve met some performance issues, rhythm start to break if BPM is higher than 110 but I'm expecting to make it work on BPM over 180. I guess that it can be related with format or codec of audio files, however it also maybe that my code is not very optimised (as I can see from JS CPU profiling it's not). So I'm expecting you guys give me some code review or some hints on optimisation. Although all similar projects I've found on internet didn't work good and maybe it's just restrictions of Audio API. By the way, it's very raw and sounds works only on Chrome under Mac OS, so any advise on audio encoding for web also would be great Project on Github pages Screenshot of Groove which breaks UPDATE Ok, I've found that I was encoding audio files incorrectly, after fixing that rhythm stopped breaking, and also it started working in Mozilla. • Rails and PostgreSQL: Role postgres does not exist

  I have installed postgresql on my Mac OS Lion, and am working on a rails app. I use RVM to keep everything separate from my other rails apps. For some reason when I try to migrate the db for the first time rake cannot find the postgres user. I get the error FATAL: role "postgres" does not exist I have pgAdmin 3 so I can clearly see there is a postgres user in the DB - the admin account in fact - so I'm not sure what else to do. I read somewhere about people having issues with postgresql because of which path it was installed in, but then i don't think i would have gotten that far if it couldn't find the db. Any clues would be gratefully received! Thanks, Adam

• IPP linker errors on cygwin

  I've built a program that uses mkl and ipp that runs on mac and linux. I'm now building that program for Windows using cygwin and gcc, and can't get it to link. The errors I'm getting are: Warning: .drectve -defaultlib:"uuid.lib" ' unrecognized ../../../bin/libMath.a(VectorUtility.cxx.o):VectorUtility.cxx:(.text+0x95): undefined reference to _ippGetLibVersion' ../../../bin/libMath.a(VectorUtility.cxx.o):VectorUtility.cxx:(.text+0x157): undefined reference to `_ippsWinHann_32f_I' (and many more like that). I'm using link path: /opt/intel/IPP/6.1.2.041/ia32/lib and linking to the following: ippiemerged, ippimerged, ippmemerged, ippmmerged, ippsemerged, ippsmerged and ippcorel. Can someone point me to what I'm doing wrong?

• Maximizing Adobe Air windows on multiple monitors

  In an Adobe Air AJAX application with multiple windows running on a system with multiple (three or more) monitors, can you maximize the windows in each monitor? I've seen posts by others trying to do this, but I've not seen anyone saying how it worked out. I basically need to build a 'status monitor' system (similar to, say, an airport departures monitor) in which there are public-facing displays that need to look and feel like single-purpose, embedded applications -- no window chrome and no visible desktop. I don't think this should be any different from any other windows application, but I don't know about Air. I have a dual-monitor Mac setup right now, but I can't easily test Windows and I likely will never be able to test three monitors at once. This application will be run as an AJAX Air application written in Aptana (or DW if it makes a difference).

• Accessing GMail "View as HTML" content programatically?

  I love the "View as HTML" option in GMail when viewing attachments. I would love to be able to use this feature programatically, i.e. check a GMail inbox, read emails, if there are attachments, get the html view and use that content. I'm looking to do this in C Sharp (on a Mac, can't find the hash symbol). Does anyone know if this is possible or if there's another solution to easily get content from a GMail account, regardless of what format it's in? I.E html, pdf, Word doc, etc. The GMail Inbox Feed api isn't good enough and before I start trying to build an IMAP solution that pulls in PDF/Word doc converters, I thought it'd be good to ask here.

• How secure are GUIDs in terms of predictability?

  We're using .NET's Guid.NewGuid() to generate activation codes and API keys currently. I wonder if that poses a security problem since their algorithm is open. .NET Guid uses Win32 CoCreateGuid and I don't know it's internals (possibly MAC address + timestamp?). Can someone derive a second GUID out of the first one, or can he hit it with some smart guesses or is the randomness good enough so search space becomes too big? Generating random keys have the problem of collision, they need a double check before adding to a database. That's why we stuck with GUIDs but I'm unsure about their security for these purposes. • Xcode: How-to bind a key that triggers application to appear (background daemon)

  Hi, I am struggling to create a certain kind of application my Mac, using Xcode and Interface Builder (RubyCocoa). As I am a nuby (but understand some Ruby), I would like to know how I could let my interface appear only if a key is pushed (a toggle), while the program is running in the background. Similar behavior like when I'd press the F4-key to show Dashboard. Really neat would be if the program wouldn't be showing as running in the Dock, but as a funky icon in the top bar, like well "Growl". Thank you so much for your help, comments and feedback!

• How do I determine if my R installation on OS X has the "--enable-R-shlib" option enabled?

  I've installed R on my OS X machine via the .pkg method. I'm trying to get a Ruby gem called RSRuby to work and though it installed correctly, it's throwing an error when I try to invoke the gem. Fatal error: R home directory is not defined Reading the documentation, R should be installed with the option --enable-R-shlib. But the R documentation states that the Mac OS X installation does this by default. How can you verify that this option is enabled on an installation if you don't know it was explicitly called during installation? I'm chasing down why RSRuby can't find R home directory and this seems like the most likely problem.

• Typical text encoding and EOL behavior on mobile devices

  Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about popular mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other (or maybe even \r for iOS)? I'll supply both types to the user just in case, but I'd like to choose one as default. Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here? Once again, I'll supply a range of encodings to the user just in case, but I'd like to prioritize or use certain encodings as default if it's appropriate.

  i have been programming in C/C++ for my academic courses a lot and was under the impression i had a pretty good grasp of it. but lately i had to work in a bluetooth application that had a server and client implementation in a Linux box and an embedded system. i learned bluez bluetooth API, socket/network programming and coded it. however i ran into a lot of problems with memory leaks and segmentation faults and other memory related errors along the way.as the code grew more complex i all but lost control of the pointers and threads and sockets. this got me wondering that i had a lot to learn that they didn't say in the basic C/C++ books. so i wanted to ask for the resources that are available that'll help be code better in a professional way in C/C++ .especially for the Linux/Mac environment (gcc compiler).

• How to automatically email customers registration keys?

  I've written a bit of software that I'd like to share with others (a Mac Dashboard widget, specifically), but I'd also like to be compensated a bit for the time I spent on it. I've devised my own simple registration key algorithm, which takes a customer's email address and creates a 12-character alphanumeric key. The software itself is finished, demo limitations, key validation & all. I just need to get the keys to customers. How do I simply alert a key generation script to automatically email a customer a key, upon notification that they paid my account? Can I use PayPal IPN & JavaScript? The simplest solution will do - this is a five dollar widget. :)

• jquery $(window).width() and $(window).height() return different values when viewport has not been r

  I am writing a site using jquery that repeatedly repeatedly calls $(window).width() and $(window).height() to position and size elements based on the viewport size... In troubleshooting I discovered that I am getting slightly different viewport size reports in repeated calls to the above jquery functions when the viewport is not resized... Wondering if there is any special case anyone knows of when this happens, or if this is just the way it is. The difference in sizes reported are 20px or less, it appears. It happens in Safari 4.0.4, Firefox 3.6.2 and Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta on Mac OS X 10.6.2... I didn't test other browsers yet because it doesn't appear to be specific to the browser. I was also unable to figure out what the difference depends upon - if it isn't the viewport size, could there be another factor that makes the results differ? Any insight would be appreciated... • Issues rendering image in flash via Context.Response.Write C# asp.

  I am having an issue rendering images in flash via a character array. I am sending it from a webhandler via Context.Response.Write as a Base64CharacterArray. It functions 100% properly in a windows environment, however when using a Mac the image data is not retrieved correctly causing the image to appear incorrectly. It does not affect the data,however as it is rendered properly in a player which accesses the data via a webservice. I am at the end of my rope on this one. Anything will help. • Cross-platform SOA framework

  I'm looking for a good cross-platform SOA framework that preferably works with several programming languages like C++, Python, and C#. I recently learned about Thrift, but that doesn't seem to work with MSVC from the documentation I've read and requires the use of Cygwin or MinGW to even compile the Thrift compiler. Does Thrift work with MSVC and if not, are there any alternatives that would meet my needs? Such as being able to generate C# and Python bindings and work on Linux, Mac, and Windows. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• Rubygame on OS X shebang problem

  I'm playing around with Rubygame. I installed it with the Mac Pack, and now I have the rsdl executable. rsdl game.rb works fine, but when I chmod +x the rb file, add the shebang to rsdl (tried direct path and /usr/bin/env rsdl) and try to execute it (./game.rb), it starts to flicker between the Terminal and rsdl which is trying to open, and eventually gives up and gives a bus error. Anyone know what's causing that? I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.2) if it makes a difference. Thanks.

  I've just integrated RestKit with a Mac application for communicating with a web service. After much confusion, I have successfully got requests and responses working using it. The problem I am now finding is that when I want to make a POST request. I have created a RKRequestDescriptor with a mapping for a whole number of properties and all of the properties are being sent as parameters for the query. I want a way of dynamically changing the parameters that are sent, for example not sending some parameters where the property is nil. Is this possible as part of the built-in functionality of RestKit? And if so, how?

  I have a website www.askvioletnow.com. I added a flash mp3 player that plays a sound clip when you go to the page. I know Flash doesn't work on the iPhone OS, but is there a way to get this type of mp3 player to work on an iPhone? I'm thinking maybe a javascript mp3 player. What I would ultimately want is to replace my flash mp3 player with a different mp3 player and have it so the player is available on Windows and Mac computers as well as iPhone devices. • Fastest way to deploy rails apps with Passenger

  I am working on a Dreamhost server with Rails 2.3.5. Every time I make changes to a site, I have to ssh into the site, remove all the files, upload a zip file containing all the new files for the site, unzip that file, migrate the database, and go. Something tells me there's a faster way to deploy rails apps. I am using mac Time Machine to keep track of different versions of my applications. I know git tracks files, but I don't really know how to work with it to deploy my applications, since passenger takes care of all the magic for me. What would be a faster way to deploy my applications (and avoid the downtime associated with my method when I delete all files on the server)? Thanks!

• Problem with absolute positioning div over SWF and IE 8.

  I'm attempting to use the old IFrame-over-SWF trick to get HTML to display "inside" a SWF. I'm following the example provided by Brian Deitte at: http://www.deitte.com/IFrameDemo3/IFrameDemo.html. (The source code can be viewed and downloaded by right-clicking on the SWF and selecting "View Source".) In the latest versions of Firefox, Google, Opera, and Safari on the Mac, it all looks good. But in IE 8 the absolutely positioned div containing the IFrame is positioned too far up and left, and the height and width are considerably smaller. Thoughts?
