• Is bigger capacity ram faster then smaller capacity ram for same clock and CL? [migrated]

  I know that bigger capacity hard-drives with the same RPM are faster then smaller capacity hard-drives. I was wondering if the same is true for ram. Given two ram clocked at 1600mhz and with identical CLs: 9-9-9-24. Is a 2x8 going to perform better then a 2x4 ? Note that I am not asking if having more ram will improve the performance of my PC, I'm asking if the bigger capacity ram performs better. Thank You.

  Based on many online sources, in serving static files, Apache2 will create new thread on every different connection... results in resource hungry But how about serving PHP through Apache2 (mod_php, MPM worker, etc)? Does apache will also open new thread like serving static files? (AFAIK, in nginx php-fpm, we can set the max thread, but I dont know how many connection per thread) I'm planning to use Apache2 in serving PHP, and hope it will be same as nginx PHP-FPM or even better in resource usage and performance.

• lighttpd server-status

  I have enabled lighttpd mod_status as /server-status. When I go to the URL, I get the status page. I am interested in monitoring connections -- most specifically KeepAlive connections to make sure KeepAlive is working correctly. The problem is I only see the full connection info for the /server-status request itself. All other requests do not have the URI or hist columns filled in: X.X.X.X 0/0 0/4673 handle-req 0 test.mydomain.com /server-status (/server-status) This makes it difficult to know which URL was last handled by a particular connection. Is there something special that I need to do to show this information(URI) in /server-status?

• Cloud computing?

  I'm an analyst and intermediate programmer working for a consulting company. Sometimes we are doing some intensive computing in Excel which can be frustrating because we have slow computers. My company does not have enough money to buy everyone new computers right now. Is there a cloud computing service that allows me to login to a high performance virtual computer from remote desktop? We are not that technical so preferrably the computer is running Windows and I can run Excel and other applications from this computer. Thanks

• Causes of hard crashes on Windows XP and how to debug

  I am occasionally seeing hard lockups on XP: totally unresponsive to keyboard/mouse, screen freezes at time of crash, no SSH/VNC possible. Very intermittent, nothing in the logs. I never see a blue screen on any kind of error message. This morning I logged in via VNC, logged out again, 20 minutes later physically sat at PC and it crashed around the time of VNC logout. I tend to suspect video cards in these kind of situations but it's a modern-ish card with modern drivers (one revision back, but this has been happening for 5 revisions or more) and normally would at least see a blue screen I expect. What would you suspect? Where can I look or what can I set up for more information? Bear in mind that this happens about once every 3 or 4 weeks, so extensive logging or intrusive monitoring isn't really an option.

  Which would have better overall performance on a cheap (~$600) laptop; Intel Atom 330 with Nvidia ion or intel Pentium/Celeron with Intel graphics. I don't need 8 hour battery life and will hopefully be using this for programming/web browsing and occasionally light gaming.

  I have all my databases in full recovery and have the log backups happening every 15 minutes so my log files are usually pretty small. question is if there is a nightly operation that causes lots of transactions to happen and causes my log files to grow, should i shrink them back down afterward? Does having a gigantic log file negatively affect the database performance? Disk space isn't an issue at this time.

  I need to cross-reference data involving a large number of IP addresses against known public proxies, spam-listed IPs etc. For obvious performance and network load reasons, obtaining a regularly updated dump for off-line processing would be preferrable. I currently use http://www.dnsbl.manitu.net/download/nixspam-ip.dump.gz - a digest of ix.dnsbl.manitu.net with 40,000 entries updated every 15 minutes. I'd like something more substantial though, so my question is: does such a thing exist?

• Diagnosing high CPU waiting

  I have a monitoring server that is running icinga/collectd/graphite with about 50 hosts. I have noticed high load/slugging performance on the box. If you take a look at top, you'll see: Cpu(s): 0.6%us, 0.2%sy, 0.0%ni, 7.6%id, 23.4%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.2%si, 0.0%st Notice the HUGE %wa value, which as far as I know means a network or disk bottleneck. ifconfig shows no dropping packets and there's not a ton of bandwidth going on, so that leaves disk issues, right? There's not a lot of disk writing going on either...iotop is reporting we're only writing a little over 1 MB per second and the RAID tool reports everything is A-OK and write caching is enabled. How do I go about trying to figure out how to fix this?   I have install Nagios Core and I am using WMI Checks for Windows and Created a script to execute remote commands through ssh on my Linux machines. When Installing Nagios there is an option to run NsClient++, but I went with the WMI Checks because it is agent less. What are the advantages of using NsClient++ for Nagios? Also would calling too many commands through WMI or SSH hinder the performance of the remote host?

  Trying to plot CPU load on my server, with the following hardware: ProLiant DL360p Gen8 (same behavior on ProLiant DL360 G7). The machine is running VMWare ESXi5.1 To create a CPU spike I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null, and I know the CPU is overloaded, because I can see a correlating spike in the graphs displayed on vCenter. However, running this snmpwalk: snmpwalk -v 1 -c ******** 192.168.MY_IP 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2 Shows the following results: iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1 = INTEGER: 3 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.3 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.4 = INTEGER: 3 Am I not looking into the right MIB? Should I be multiplying these by a constant? By the way, using HP Agentless Monitoring I was able to get some cpu stats, but not what I'm looking for, at least nothing I could find wading through these MIBs.

What requirements should we demand of the client's infrastructure..all I can think of so far is remote access for developers and a Linux machine?   Actually I'm using supervisor to monitor a process and restart it when it stops for some reason. The problem is that in case of a supervisor crash the process stops get monitored. So I thought to schedule a cronjob to check supervisor is running, and eventually restart it. The next thing I'm considering is to get rid of supervisor and check my process directly from the cronjob. I read that sometimes supervisor uses too much memory (to be verified, though). • CentOS 7: PHP high CPU usage

  I've migrated Observium monitoring platform from CentOS 6.5 to CentOS 7 and I've noticed high CPU usage mostly caused by PHP, the CPU load increase when pooling script is running (poller-wrapper.py). Both VMs are running on the same physical host (KVM hypervisor) with exactly the same spec. I also tested this with a simple PHP benchmark script and CentOS 7 is slower - is it strictly related to PHP version (5.4.30 vs 5.4.16)? • Is my disk hot or not?

  I am trying to figure out the temperature of my dedicated server's harddisk. For this purpose, I've downloaded HDTune to monitor the S.M.A.R.T. Status. The problem is that the current temperature for "C2 Temperature" is 73 degrees celsius, but the little thermometer on top of the window shows 27 degrees celsius. See this screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/OGJhZGIxND Another monitoring software (Anfibia Reactor) shows similar behavior: Disk temperature is around 30 degrees, but it says that the disk is too hot. So, is my disk hot or not? Since this is a dedicated server, I can't just open the case and put a thumb on it.

• Can I use a Smart Array P410 controller on a HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server?

  This link says the HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server only supports Smart Array E200, E500, P400 and P800 controllers. Can I use a Smart Array P410 instead? Currently the server has only the default internal controller, I need an additional one for better performance and to support additional drives (the default controller only supports 4, with a Smart Array controller all 8 bays can be used). The disks are SATA ones.
