  • How to always return a set number of records when using find_related_tags with acts-as-taggable-on

    I'm using the acts-as-taggable-on gem and I need to use find_related_tags on my survey model to get back 3 surveys every time. In the event there aren't always 3 related I need to pick how ever many are related plus some random ones to get to 3. Additionally I have a method I wrote called completed_survey_ids which return an array of survey_ids that shouldn't be used because the user has already completed them. Also there is a rare case that there won't be enough surveys because the user has completed them all so in that event it is okay to return less surveys then requested. I did write a named_scope to handle getting rid of the completed_survey_ids that I think works named_scope :not, lambda { |survey_ids| {:conditions => "id NOT IN (#{survey_ids.join(',')})" } }

  • How does the proc in the caches_action if clause get execute

    I have a newbie kind of question which I cant get my head around. How does the Proc in the if condition of the caches_action get executed for the caches_action method. for example caches_action :show, :if=Proc.new{|x| something} what i dont get its how does this get called. I know i can execute a proc defined as proc= Proc.new by proc.call so i dont understand how this gets called. Second how do I pass conditions like if logged_in? I'd appreciate any help on this

  • Active Record like functionality on array instance variable

    I would like to write a module that provides active record like functionality on an array instance variable. Examples of its use would be x = Container.new x.include(ContainerModule) x.elements << Element.new x.elements.find id module ContainerModule def initialize(*args) @elements = [] class << @elements def <<(element) #do something with the Container... super(element) end def find(id) #find an element using the Container's id self #=> #<Array..> but I need #<Container..> end end super(*args) end end The problem is that I need the Container object within these methods. Any reference to self will return the Array, not the Container object. Is there any way to do this? Thanks!

  • Running rspec against multiple targets

    I've written an rspec test using Watir against a web application and it's running fine. However, I now want to be able to run this test against the web application running on different domain names. My initial thought was that I'd be able to pass a value to spec at the command line to set a variable within my script, but I can't see any easy method of doing this. So my second thought was that I might need to add an array of domains into my script and have it test all of them - but I don't always want to test every domain, and the domains are constantly changing as we add and remove sites to be tested. What are my options for allowing the choice of targets I want?

The only problem is i dont know how to remove my test requests to the web apps from the google analytics report. Can anyone help me with the same? Is it possible to do that with watir?     I am still using the old colon syntax (I prefer it more than the bracket syntax) and this particular code: a.button-link +box($main-color) +border-radius(5px) :background :color $main-color :color #fff :padding 5px generates a warning like so: DEPRECATION WARNING: On line 12, character 3 of '/Users/eumir/rails_apps/dxconnect/app/ stylesheets/partials/utilities/_link-styles.sass' Setting properties with = has been deprecated and will be removed in version 3.2. Use "background: $main-color" instead. I tried that but my background color still doesn't show up. Any help on this please? Thanks!

  • are fixtures loaded when using the sql dump to create a test database

    Because of some non standard table creation options I am forced to use the sql dump instead of the standard schema.rb (i.e. I have uncommented this line in the environment.rb config.active_record.schema_format = :sql). I have noticed that when I use the sql dump that my fixtures do not seem to be loaded into the database. Some data is loaded into it but, I am not sure where it is coming from. Is this normal? and if it is normal can anybody tell me where this other data is coming from?

  • From Sinatra Base object. Get port of application including the base object

    I have a Sinatra::Base object that I would like to include in all of my web apps. In that base class I have the configure method which is called on start-up. I would like that configure code to 'register' that service with a centralized database. The information that needs to be sent when registering is the information on how to contact this web-service... things like host and port. I then plan on having a monitoring service that will spin over all registered services and occasionally ping them to make sure they are still up and running. In the configure method I am having trouble getting the port information. The 'self.settings.port' variable doesn't seem to work in this method. a) any ideas on how to get the port? I have the host. b) is there a sinatra plug-in that already does something like this so I don't have to write it myself? :-) //in my Sinatra::Base code. lets call it register_me.rb RegisterMe < Sinatra::Base configure do //save host and port information to database end get '/check_status' //return status end //in my web service code require register_me //at this point, sinatra will initialize the RegisterMe object and call configure post ('/blah') //example of a method for this particular web service end

For example: curse_array.each_safe.magic.collect {|element| "#{element} is a nice sentence."} I know there is a way to do this, but I've forgotten. Please help! :-)

  • Restart nginx without sudo?

    So I want to be able to cap:deploy without having to type any passwords. I have setup all private keys so I can get to the remote servers fine, and am now using svn over ssh, so no passwords there. I have one last problem, I need to be able to restart nginx. Right now I have sudo /etc/init.d/nginx reload. That is a problem b/c it uses the capistrano password, the one I just removed b/c I am using keys. Any ideas on how to restart nginx w\out a password?

    I feel bad asking this question, as I thought I knew enough about Activerecord to answer this myslef. But such is the way of having SO available ... I'm trying to remove the commas from a field in a model of mine, I want the user to be able to type a number , ie 10,000 and that number be stored in the database as 10000. I was hoping that I could do some model-side normalization to remove the comma. I don't want to depend on the view or controller to properly format my data. I tried ; before_validation :normalize def normalize self['thenumber'] = self['thenumber'].to_s.gsub(',','') end no worky :(

  • How do I find the .max of an attribute value among a group of different Models?

    Hi, everyone: I am also open to just straight-up refactoring what I'm finding to be pretty repetitive, but to give a baseline of how it's working.... I have for every contact a Campaign, which has_many of three types of Models: Email, Call, and Letter. When an Email (Call or Letter) has been executed for a specific contact, I have a Contact_Email(_or_Call_or_Letter) which belongs to both the Contact and the Model (Email_or_Call_or_Letter). Each Contact_Email for example pairing has a :date_sent attribute. So does each Contact_Call and Contact_Letter. How do I find the latest of all of them? Here is the code I wrote that can find the latest Email and my finding retyping similar code for Call and Letter, but then stuck on how to do a .max on all of them: def last_email(contact) #get campaign the contact belongs to @campaign = Campaign.find_by_id(contact.campaign_id) @last_email = ContactEmail.find(:last, :conditions => "contact_id = #{contact.id}", :order => "date_sent DESC") @last_call = ContactCall.find(:last, :conditions => "contact_id = #{contact.id}", :order => "date_sent DESC") @last_letter = ContactLetter.find(:last, :conditions => "contact_id = #{contact.id}", :order => "date_sent DESC") # how do I get the latest of all of these to display? if @last_sent_email.nil? return "no email sent" else return @last_sent_email.date_sent end end Question 1: With what I have, how can I find effectively @last_event given I can find the last Email, last Call, and last Letter for every contact?   • Splitting PDF to png

    I'm using paperclip to upload a pdf. Once the file is uploaded I need to split every page into a png. This is the command I think I need to use convert -size 640x300 fileName.pdf slide.png Now if I run that command from terminal it works fine, but I need a way of getting each slides name so I can add it into a model. What's the best way to achieve this?
