• mplayer dumpstream sometimes fails

  I'm trying to rip the video at http://videolectures.net/ecml07%5Fgetoor%5Fisr/, so I can play it at a faster speed. I paste http://193.2.4.216/2007/pascal/ecml07%5Fwarsaw/getoor%5Flise/ecml07%5Fgetoor%5Fisr%5F01.wmv into a firefox browser in Windows and MediaPlayer plays the thing. However if I try mplayer -dumpstream, it gets stuck into an infinite loop trying to play the file. If I use wget to download the link, I get a small text file which basically points to the same URL. How can I get mplayer to download this stream?

• How do I trust an off site application

  I need to implement something similar to a license server. This will have to be installed off site at the customers' location and needs to communicate with other applications at the customers' site (the applications that use the licenses) and an application running in our hosting center (for reporting and getting license information). My question is how to set this up in a way I can trust that: The license server is really our application and not something that just simulates it; and There is no "man in the middle" (i.e. a proxy or something that alters the traffic). The first thing I thought of was to use with client certificates and that would solve at least 2. However, what I'm worried about is that someone just decompiles (this is build in .NET) the license server, alters some logic and recompiles it. This would be hard to detect from both connecting applications. This doesn't have to be absolutely secure since we have a limited number of customers whom we have a trust relationship with. However, I do want to make it more difficult than a simple decompile/recompile of the license server. I primarily want to protect against an employee or nephew of the boss trying to be smart.

• How to properly shutdown or reboot a Unix/Linux server

  What is the correct way to turn off a Unix/Linux server? From my googling, I have learned (hopefully) the following: shutdown: I should use this, with the parameter -h to halt, or the parameter -r to reboot halt: halts the computer (stops the processor? does this physically turn the power of the computer off?). I think this will call shutdown if not at init0, otherwise just halts. reboot: if not at init6, calls shutdown, otherwise just reboots the computer. if all that is correct, then the only thing I can't figure out is what exactly 'halt' does. Does it just stop the processor but not turn the computer physically off? How do I "poweroff" the computer? Thanks

• A new tool in beta: Conflict Alert

  You know that manual merges are a real pain? Well, I’ve just released a Visual Studio extension that makes manual merges a thing of the past. No source control system can automatically merge two edits to the same line of code. Conflict Alert solves this by warning you that you are heading down a path that will cause a manual merge later down the line. You choose whether you want to carry on, or talk to your teammate and find out what they are doing. Have you ever warned your teammates that you are doing a big refactor, and that they should ‘keep out of class X’? Conflict Alert tells them for you automatically by highlighting the sections of code that you have edited.   It doesn’t need to connect to your source control system, so it works no matter which you use. • Active DFS node did not restore after failure

  On Tuesday we had a Server 2008 R2 DFS-R node go offline unexpectedly. DFS did the right thing and started routing requests to a different node, which was in a remote site. This is by design, because even though it's slow, at least it's still working. We had the local DFS-R node back online within an hour, and it had synced all its changes 10 minutes after that. 3 of the 5 terminal servers reset themselves to the local DFS node, but the other two stayed pointing at the remote DFS node for three days, until someone finally piped up about how slow requests were. What reasons could there be why some, but not all, of the server reverted? Is the currently active DFS node for a namespace exposed anywhere in the OS (WMI, or even scripts) so that we can monitor the active nodes?

• Windows 7 setup hangs after "Starting Windows..."-screen

  Hi! I'm having some trouble installing Windows 7. I need to install the OS from boot in order to split my C: into two different partitions, as this is not allowed when installing from inside Vista. When I boot up from the install disc, I get the usual "Windows is copying files..."-screen, shortly followed by the "Starting Windows..."-screen with the animated window-logo or whatever. Then it looks as if the installation is about to begin with a blue screen and a cursor I can move around, but here it all stops. Nothing more happens, and the setup seems to hang. Not a single key on my keyboard has any effect, and all I am left to do is to abort and reboot. I've tried to install using two different DVDs (not clones), and the same thing happens every time. What may be causing this, and how may I fix it? Thanks in advance :)

• How can I tell GoogleBot that a subdirectory is now a subdomain?

  I had about a million pages of a catalog indexed under a subdirectory, and now that's moved to a subdomain. GoogleBot is crawling each one of them and getting a 301 redirect to the new location. Even though I have set up the redirect rule in the apache sites-enabled configuration file, (i.e. it's early on when apache does the redirect - PHP is not even getting loaded), even though I have done that, the server isn't handling the load well. GoogleBot is making around 5 requests per second, and on top of my normal traffic that is hiking up the CPU for a few hours at a time. I checked in Webmaster Tools and the corresponding documentation for a way to let Google know that the content had been moved from a subdirectory to a subdomain, but with little luck. Basically the most helpful thing I saw said to just send 301 headers for the new location. How can I tell GoogleBot that a subdirectory is now a subdomain? If that is not an option, how can I more efficiently send 301 redirects out for a particular subdomain? I was thinking perhaps the Nginx server but I'm not sure that I can run both Apache and Nginx side by side on port 80 for different subdomains.

• Disable CD eject button on Windows laptop

  Most laptops have a CD eject that is very sensitive, and placed such that it regularly gets triggered when handling the laptop. This is in particular a problem (for clumsy-handed me) when picking up the laptop to stow in in a laptop bag; I've lost count of the number of times it has ejected just as I am lowering it into the case! I rarely use a CD, but I am wondering whether some crafty software hack (or other trick) might be possible to make it less vulnerable. Perhaps trying to fool it into thinking it is busy (but ideally without destroying my battery). Otherwise, I might as well bow to the inevitable and snap the darned thing off. I'm not making this brand-specific, as I've seen this problem on a range of both branded and re-badged laptops. I am, however, mainly interested in windows-friendly solutions.

• Can't mount USB devices, shut down etc. as a user

  I tried gnome3 and gnome3-staging ppas to test running Gnome 3.8. After a while I decided that Gnome 3.8 wasn't for me, so I did a ppa-purge of both the ppas. As described in gnome3-staging ppa page, I also did: $ sudo apt-get purge libpam-systemd $ sudo apt-get install libpam-xdg-support The trouble is, I can't mount my external USB device anymore. When I try to mount it as a user, it fails: $ udisks --mount /dev/sdc1 Mount failed: Not Authorized I am logged in an XFCE session, but the same thing happens in a fallback Gnome session, or from a Unity session. Also, in XFCE, "suspend" and "shut down" menus are grayed out. I can't also open synaptic package manager from XFCE menus (sudo synaptic works). After a lot of searching, it seems like it is a policykit issue. I see the following in my ~/.xsession-errors: (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:5805): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 5805 PID 5805 doesn't exist. If I try to start polkit-dnome-authentication-agent-1 from an xterm, I get the same error (different PID): $ /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 ... (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:15971): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid 15971 (the ... lines are warnings from GTK about missing css files etc.). polkitd is running: $ pidof polkitd 1495 Is there something I am missing?

• Fix YAML syntax highlighting in VIM

  The YAML syntax highlighting in Vim 7.3 isn't great. Putting an apostrophe in a line of text triggers quote highlighting even when there's no quote. The same thing happens in other files sometimes too. I've posted a screenshot below. Is there any way to fix this behavior, or is there a different YAML syntax file I can use that won't trigger this behavior? This occurs in both MacVim and Vim in the Terminal. I'm running v7.3. • Finding how a hacked server was hacked

  I was just browsing through the site and found this question: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY. Basically the question says: My server has been hacked. What should I do? The best answer is excellent but it raised some questions in my mind. One of the steps suggested is to: Examine the 'attacked' systems to understand how the attacks succeeded in compromising your security. Make every effort to find out where the attacks "came from", so that you understand what problems you have and need to address to make your system safe in the future. I have done no system admin work so I have no idea how I would start doing this. What would be the first step? I know that you could look in the server log files but as an attacker the first thing that I would do would be errasing the log files. How would you "understand" how the attacks succeeded?

• Gmail for Googleapps mail delivery issues

  I have a google apps domain running gmail. One of the owners of one of the email accounts is complaining that some emails don't get delivered to him. I sent him an email that did not get to its destination on one hand but I got no NDR on the other hand. I have already checked that the email was not on in his spam folder. The only thing that he has there is a forwarding rule that is also set up to leave the original in place. I am looking for any tools or ideas on how to debug this.

• How do you encode Algebraic Data Types in a C#- or Java-like language?

  There are some problems which are easily solved by Algebraic Data Types, for example a List type can be very succinctly expressed as: data ConsList a = Empty | ConsCell a (ConsList a) consmap f Empty = Empty consmap f (ConsCell a b) = ConsCell (f a) (consmap f b) l = ConsCell 1 (ConsCell 2 (ConsCell 3 Empty)) consmap (+1) l This particular example is in Haskell, but it would be similar in other languages with native support for Algebraic Data Types. It turns out that there is an obvious mapping to OO-style subtyping: the datatype becomes an abstract base class and every data constructor becomes a concrete subclass. Here's an example in Scala: sealed abstract class ConsList[+T] { def map[U](f: T => U): ConsList[U] } object Empty extends ConsList[Nothing] { override def map[U](f: Nothing => U) = this } final class ConsCell[T](first: T, rest: ConsList[T]) extends ConsList[T] { override def map[U](f: T => U) = new ConsCell(f(first), rest.map(f)) } val l = (new ConsCell(1, new ConsCell(2, new ConsCell(3, Empty))) l.map(1+) The only thing needed beyond naive subclassing is a way to seal classes, i.e. a way to make it impossible to add subclasses to a hierarchy. The two stumbling blocks I found when trying to use Algebraic Data Types in C# were: I couldn't figure out what the bottom type is called in C# (i.e. I couldn't figure out what to put into class Empty : ConsList< ??? >) I couldn't figure out a way to seal ConsList so that no subclasses can be added to the hierarchy What would be the most idiomatic way to implement Algebraic Data Types in C# and/or Java? Or, if it isn't possible, what would be the idiomatic replacement?

• APC module causing strange error

  When I run php -v I get: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/apc.so: undefined symbol: php_pcre_exec in Unknown on line 0 This isn't my first rodeo. I've setup APC multiple times. This is a MediaTemple Dedicated Virtual 4.0 with Plesk 11. Plesk 11 is the only thing essentially different from the other servers I've set this up on. I've verified that pcre-devel is installed. I've compiled APC from source as well as used pecl to install it. No difference. I also tried downgrading to APC 3.0.19, with no love.

• What should a developer know before building a public web site?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification. This question is community wiki, so please feel free to edit that answer to add links to good articles that will help explain or teach each particular point. • How do you apply development practices like version control, testing and continuous integration/deployment to system administration?

  Imagine you're going to manage a number of servers with a number of different services that's used by a number of people. Now say you want to reconfigure or replace some software on one of those servers. Obviously you don't want to work on servers that are in production. If this was a code change, as a developer, I would make the change on my local development machine, test it locally and commit the change to a version control system. The changes could then be deployed in a staging environment, tested further and finally deployed in a production environment. It would also be easy for me to roll back, if necessary. Generally, or specifically, how do you achieve this in system administration? (The first thing that comes to mind is to use virtual machines and put virtual machine images in version control, but I'm sure there is a lot of literature and clever solutions I'm not presently aware of.)

• Lotus Notes "Format painter" or Quick access to fonts.

  I got Lotus Notes 7.0.3 at my job and I miss the "format painter" to copy the style in my mails. Does it exist? If not, the biggest problems I got are when I paste text form another program. The style is imported and I don't like that. I got to search for the "Default sans serif" font (witch is somewhere in the middle of the font list, another annoying thing). Basically, I use "Default sans serif" for text and "Default Monospace" for code. Is there a way to put them at the top of the font list of to get a quick access to them, or maybe in a toolbar or something?

• Download folders from dev server to local drive

  I am developing a .net web application on a local environment. I have a dev server that the application is installed on. Within the web application on the dev server I have four folders that I dont have locally and that are controlled by another application. In my day to day development I require the four folders on local PC. I would like to automate the process of pulling the folders from the dev server to my local drive, so I can keep thing in sync. Ideally something like this Run file from main folder (be it a bat file, powershell, some sort of job, open to recommendations) Download 4 folders supplied to it. First download bring everything down, from them on only pull the changes Not sure where to start with achieving this but would appreciate any help would with. I know there are apps out there that do something like this but would like to give a go writing something to do this before I resort to using one of them.

• Multiple monitors showing same screen but different resolutions

  Is it possible to have 2 or more monitors showing the same screen, for example the same desktop but with different resolutions. Like the clone option in Nvidia or the mirror option using the Display settings in Ubuntu but instead of showing the same output with the same resolution, the both show the same output using a resolution that is native for each monitor connected. In my case if I have a netbook that has max resolution of 1360x768 and a TV that has 1280x1024, the would both show the same desktop but each with their own resolution that is compatible for each device. This would help in trying to find a resolution that works on both monitors and in cases like a mini netbook and a huge TV it would solve issues like having max 800x600 in one monitor and min 1024x768 in the other. In the case I tested I was using an HDMI cable but this question also involves VGA and any other connection. I have 3 tests scenarios for this: Scenario 1 - Laptop HP DV6000 (Intel Integrated Video) with 1360x760 connected to a Samsung LED 42 TV that has 1280x900. Scenario 2 - Laptop EEE with 1024x600 (Intel Integrated Video) connected to Sony LCD TV that supports 1280x900. Scenario 3 - Intel Desktop with Nvidia 440 GT with HDMI connected to Soneview 32' TV that supports 1920x1080 and VGA connected to an Epson Video Beam that supports 1280x1024 max. In this 3 scenarios I need to be able to show the same desktop and same views but on different resolutions for each output device. UPDATE: Tested with Xubuntu and the way it handles multiple monitors is precisely what I am asking. The ability to handle the resolution of different monitors showing the same thing.

• Looking for Full Screen Web-Browser in Vizio or Samsung TV's

  I see that Google TV, inside Sony, has a Chrome browser. Is the same thing possible inside Vizio, or Samsung, or any other TV? The 42" Vizio is $499 at Costco, and the Sony with Google TV is $999. We're looking at a buch of these TV's that have build in Wi-Fi, to place around the office as Big Dashboards, and I don't want to have a computer attached to get web content on the screen. It's my understanding that both Samsung Apps, and Vizio Apps, use Yahoo Widgets as their ap engine. Anyone know of a way to get a full screen browser going, without attaching a computer? We thought of attaching an Apple TV, which can be jailbroken, but that is just another piece of equipment to lose, break, etc. Thank you!

• Which programming language should i choose? (much more info inside) [closed]

  I am not completely sure if this is the right place to put this question, but since it's the programming thread I guessed that there's many experienced programmers here. :) Ok, hello! My name is Andreas and I am a 16 years old guy from Norway. For some time now I've wanted to learn a programming language. Six months ago I started learning C++, but quit withing a week due to lack of motivation. The same thing happend only 2 months ago when I tried to learn Lua. I wanted to program mods to the game Garry's mod, and was really motivated. Then I stopped playing the game, and the programming stopped with it. Today though I am ready again. The only difference is that I am not completely sure what I want to do with the language. I only want to create something, and I miss the progress of failing and enduring hard work until I finally solve the problem I've worked on for hours. What I am trying to say is; Is there any program out there that allows me, a complete noob (I didn't learn that much in a week, so I like to call myself a beginner), to create apps, mods or something similar but at the same time being qualified as a first time language? I was thinking of Java, because Android, Minecraft and many other applications and games use it. But I've heard that it is going to be replaced by a program called HTML 5 (whatever that is), is this true? I certainly don't want to spend many hours of my life on something that is useless in a year or two. Hopefully I didn't make this too complicated. I know that it is hard to recommend something when I don't have a goal, but I really don't know what to say.   In case you haven't figured it out by now, Oracle reserves an awful lot of announcements for Oracle Open World. As a result, the show is always a lot of fun for geeks. What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one.
