• Thoughts of Cloud Development/Google App Engine

  I use mainly PHP for web development, but recently, I started thinking about using Google App Engine. It doesn't use PHP which I am already familiar with, so there will be a steeper learning curve. Probably using Python/Django. But I think it maybe worthwhile. Some advantages I see: Focus on App/Development. No need to setup/maintain server ... no more server configs Scales automatically Pay for what you use. Free for low usage Reliable, it's Google after all Some concerns though: Does database with no joins pose a problem for those who used App Engine before? Do I have to upload to Google just to test? Will it be slow compared to testing locally? What are your thoughts and opinions? Why would you use or not use App Engine?

• How do I list installed software with the installed size?

  I would like to have a list the installed software on my machine, with the disk space consumed by them alongside. I would prefer to be able to order by largest/smallest, but that is not a necessity. I am the sort of person who will install software to try it, and never clean up after myself. As a result, my 7GB (Windows and my Data are on separate partitions, as well as a swap area) Ubuntu 11.04 partition is suffering, and has started regularly showing warning messages. I have cleaned my browser cache, as well as everything under Package Cleaner in Ubuntu Tweak, and am left with 149.81 MB off free space.

• Python or C server hosting for indie development

  I've written a lot of the game, but it's singleplayer. Now we want to join up and play together. I want to host it like an MMO, but haven't got any personal ability to host (no static IPs or direct access to a reasonable router that will allow me to port forward) so I wondered if there were any free / very cheap hosting solutions for people developing games that need to develop their MMO side. In my case it's a world server for a 2D game where the world map can be changed by the players. So, GAE sounds expensive, as there would be quite a few updates per second (I heard they bill for data updates but not for download, but can't find refernce to billing anywhere on the FAQs) I'd prefer to be able to write the server in python as that's what the game is written in (with pygame), but C is fine, and maybe even better as it might prompt me to write some more performant world generator code ;)

• In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election. Next Up Much of the last couple of months has been focused on preparing for the PASS Summit in Seattle Nov. 6-9. • How to use lemodev highscore plugin for unity?

  I am trying to add a server-sided highscore system to my game in unity. I have downloaded the free lemodev highscore plugin from the asset store but I cant figure out how to use it. I know where to put my server info and so on but other what are you supposed to do ? I added the main camera prefab that came with the package to my scene but other than adding an additional camera it did precisely nothing ( at least it seems that way ). Could anyone look into it and tell me how to use it ? The developer's website seems to have no information on the subject.

Ping.eu is a free service which would let you test various aspects related to networks which would typically be pain inducing doing it on your own. For seasoned network professional having a MAC address of their own instead of a name :) this might not be that useful. However for a layperson like me this an invaluable resource. • Should companies require developers to credit code they didn't write?

  In academia, it's considered cheating if a student copies code/work from someone/somewhere else without giving credit, and tries to pass it off as his/her own. Should companies make it a requirement for developers to properly credit all non-trivial code and work that they did not produce themselves? Is it useful to do so, or is it simply overkill? I understand there are various free licenses out there, but if I find stuff I like and actually use, I really feel compelled to give credit via comment in code even if it's not required by the license (or lack thereof one).

  Whenever I attempt to make a record for *.schneiderdonnelly.com.au and CNAME it, I get two errors: You can't mix CNAME/MX records together using the same hostname. Domain root's cannot be CNAME's, however you can web-forward this record to www.schneiderdonnelly.com.au instead for the same effect. I've read it's possible so why can't I make it work? I am trying to understand the history of the Internet and the web, and this statement is hard to understand. I have read elsewhere that the Internet is now used for very different things than it was designed for, and so perhaps that factors in. What makes the Internet so well done, and what makes the web so amateurish? • lost the vertical scroll function in touchpad after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  just upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 13.10, my Laptop is a Sony SVE1512c6ew, scrolling worked perfectly in Ubuntu 13.04, doesnt work at all in 13.10 Runs Ubuntu 13.10 64bits (btw, tested it i Windows 8 environment works there)Hardware OK, have seen a number of other users with the same problem, well for starters have followed the tip on using the dconf editor, following the path: org gnome settings-daemon peripherals touchpad boxed in all for sure... still cant get vertical scroll...... Any ideas??? • 11.04 radeon screen tearing oddity

  I have a mobility radeon 5850 running 11.04 and am running catalyst 11.10 drivers. I noticed that whenever I have two windows open, one of top of the other, scrolling results in minor screen tearing, usually around the border of the window on the bottom. When I minimize or close the bottom the tearing goes away. I have tear free desktop enabled and tried looking for this specific issue but couldn't find anyone else with it. It happens in both Unity and Classic. Is there any fix for this?

  I'm determining which browsers a new site should support. I'm looking for a respected and accurate (as possible) report on the browser versions that are currently in use. This report should, at minimum cover the % of people who use what browsers, and versions of that browser. Is there a widely accepted source for this kind of report? If so, are they regularly released and available for free? Bonus points for other metrics such as breaking down by OS, Flash versions, JS versions, etc.

• Can't get HP Officejet 6500 card reader to work.

  This network (wired) printer works great using the latest HPLIP drivers. However when I plug in an SD card, it just blinks and never shows up mounted anywhere. Has anyone come up with a way to mount these?
