• Uninitialized constant Encoding with sqlite3-ruby on windows

  On a new machine, installed ruby with the 1-click installer for windows. Installed rails 2.3.2 and all associated gems, then I installed the sqlite3 binaries (into the c:\ruby\bin folder). Lastly I did gem install sqlite3-ruby -v=1.2.3 (which is apparently the latest version that works with windows) This error happens when I run rake db:migrate or when any ActiveRecord object is touched at runtime. "Beginner" being defined as someone who knows how to handle their compiler, understands to some level what a makefile is, and has touched source control without understanding it very well. • Synapse and string problems with HTTPSend in Delphi 2010

  I have been trying to get to the bottom of this problem off and on for the past 2 days and I'm really stuck. Hopefully some smart folks can help me out. The issue is that I have a function that I call in a thread that downloads a file (using Synapse libraries) from a website that is passed to it. However, I've found that every once in a while there are sites where it will not pull down a file, but wget or Firefox/IE will download it without issue. Digging into it, I've found some curious things. However, when passing the variable into the function, it fails. Anyone have any ideas? • Getting JAX-WS client work on Weblogic 9.2 with ant

  I've recently had lots of issues trying to deploy a JAX-WS web servcie client on Weblogic 9.2. It turns out there is no straightforward guide on how to achieve this, so I decided to put together this short wiki entry hoping it might be useful for others. Firstly, Weblogic 9.2 does not support web servcies using JAX-WS in general. It comes with old versions of XML-related java libraries that are incompatible with the latest JAX-WS (similar issues occur with Axis2, only Axis1 seems to be working flawlessly with Weblogic 9.x but that's a very old and unsupported library). So, in order to get it working, some hacking is required. This is how I did it (note that we're using ant in our legacy corporate project, you probably should be using maven which should eliminate 50% of those steps below): Download the most recent JAX-WS distribution from https://jax-ws.dev.java.net/ (The exact version I got was JAXWS2.2-20091203.zip) Place the JAX-WS jars with the dependencies in a separate folder like lib/webservices. Create a patternset in ant to reference those jars: Include the patternset in your WAR-related goal. This could look something like: (not the flatten="true" parameter - it's important as Weblogic 9.x is by default not smart enough to access jars located in a different lcoation than WEB-INF/lib inside your WAR file) In case of clashes, Weblogic uses its own jars by default. We want it to use the JAX-WS jars from our application instead. This is achieved by preparing a weblogic-application.xml file and placing it in META-INF folder of the deplotyed EAR file. It should look like this: javax.jws. javax.xml.bind. javax.xml.crypto. javax.xml.registry. javax.xml.rpc. javax.xml.soap. javax.xml.stream. javax.xml.ws. com.sun.xml.api.streaming.* Remember to place that weblogic-application.xml file in your EAR! The ant goal for that may look similar to: <jar destfile="${warfile}" basedir="${wardir}"/> <ear destfile="${earfile}" appxml="resources/${app.name}/application.xml"> <fileset dir="${dist}" includes="${app.name}.war"/> <metainf dir="resources/META-INF"/> </ear> Also you need to tell weblogic to prefer your WEB-INF classes to those in distribution. You do that by placing the following lines in your WEB-INF/weblogic.xml file: true And that's it for the weblogic-related configuration. Now only set up your JAX-WS goal. The one below is going to simply generate the web service stubs and classes based on a locally deployed WSDL file and place them in a folder in your app: Remember about the keep="true" parameter. Without it, wsimport generates the classes and... deletes them, believe it or not! For mocking a web service I suggest using SOAPUI, an open source project. Very easy to deploy, crucial for web servcies intergation testing. We're almost there. The final thing is to write a Java class for testing the web service, try to run it as a standalone app first (or as part of your unit tests) And then try to run the same code from withing Weblogic. It should work. It worked for me. After some 3 days of frustration. And yes, I know I should've put 9 and 10 under a single bullet-point, but the title "10 steps to deploy a JAX-WS web service under Web logic 9.2 using ant" sounds just so much better. Please, edit this post and improve it if you find something missing!

• Setting Session Variable from UpdatePanel

  I am using ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions 1.0 with the version v1.0.20229 of the AJAX Control Toolkit (which to my knowledge is the latest for .NET 2.0/Visual Studio 2005). My web page (aspx) has a DropDownList control on an UpdatePanel. In the handler for the DropDownList's SelectedIndexChanged event I attempt to set a session variable. The first time the event is fired, I get a Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: "The message received from the server could not be parsed". If I continue, subsequent SelectedIndexChanged's are handled successfully. I have stumbled upon a solution whereby if I initialise the session variable in my Page_Load (so the event handler is just setting the value of a session variable that already exists as opposed to creating a new one) the problem goes away. I'm happy to do this, but I'm curious as to exactly what the underlying cause is. Can anyone explain? (My suspicion is that setting the session variable receives a response from the server which is then returned to the 'caller', but it's not the sort of response it knows how to deal with causing the exception?) • How to get objects to react to touches in Cocos2D?

  Alright, so I'm starting to learn more about Coco2D, but I'm kinda frusterated. A lot of the tutorials I have found are for outdated versions of the code, so when I look through and see how they do certain things, I can't translate it into my own program, because a lot has changed. With that being said, I am working in the latest version of Coco2d, version 0.99. What I want to do is create a sprite on the screen (Done) and then when I touch that sprite, I can have "something" happen. For now, let's just make an alert go off. Now, I got this code working with the help of a friend. I can't do it for 2 sprites, which I was testing. So my question is this: How can I have all sprites on the screen react to the same event when touched? For my program, the same event needs to be run for all objects of the same type, so that should make it a tad easier. I tried making a subclass of CCNode and over write the method, but that just didn't work at all... so I'm doing something wrong. Help would be appreciated!

• Hosting Mercurial on IIS7

  Note, this might perhaps be best suited on serverfault.com, but since it is about hosting a programmer source code repository, I am not entirely sure. I'm posting here first, trusting that it'll be migrated if necessary. I'm attempting to host clones of my Mercurial repositories on my own server (I have the main repo somewhere else), and I'm attempting to set up Mercurial under IIS. I followed the guide here, but I get an error message. Solved: See bottom of this question for details. The error message is: mercurial.error.RepoError: repository /path/to/repo/or/config not found Here's what I did. I installed Mercurial 1.5.2 I created c:\inetpub\hg I downloaded the hg source as per the instructions of the webpage, and copied the hgweb.cgi file into c:\inetpub\hg (note, the webpage says hgwebdir.cgi, but this particular file does not exist, hgweb.cgi does, however, can this be the source of the problem?) I added a hgweb.config, with the following contents: [paths] repo1 = C:/hg/** [web] style = monoblue I created c:\hg, created a sub-directory test, and created a repository inside it I installed python 2.6.5, latest 2.6 version from the website (the webpage mentions I need to install the correct version or I'll get a specific error message, since I don't get an error message that looks remotely like the one mentioned, I assume that 2.6.5 is not the problem) I added a new virtual host hg.vkarlsen.no, pointing it to c:\inetpub\hg For this host, I added a script mapping under the Handler Mappings section, mapping *.cgi to c:\python26\python.exe -u %s %s as per the instructions on the website. I then tested it by navigating to http://hg.vkarlsen.no/hgweb.cgi, but I get an error message. If I change the line to this: config = "c:\\hg\\test" Then I can navigate the empty repository through the Mercurial web interface. However, I want to host multiple repositories, and seeing as the line says that I can also link to a hgweb config file, I tried this: config = "c:\\inetpub\\hg\\hgweb.config" But then I get the following error message: mercurial.error.Abort: c:\inetpub\hg\hgweb.config: not a Mercurial bundle file Exception ImportError: 'No module named shutil' in <bound method bundlerepository.__del__ of <mercurial.bundlerepo.bundlerepository object at 0x0260A110>> ignored Nothing I've tried for the config variable seems to work: config = "hgweb.config" config = "c:\\hg\\hgweb.config" various other variations I don't remember. So, still stumped, pointers anyone? Solved: I ended up having to edit the hgweb.cgi file: from: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, wsgicgi application = hgweb(config) to: from mercurial.hgweb import hgweb, hgwebdir, wsgicgi application = hgwebdir(config) Note the added hgwebdir parts there. • Samplegrabber works fine on AVI/MPEG files but choppy with WMV

  I have been using the latest version of the WPFMediaKit. What I am trying to do is write a sample application that will use the Samplegrabber to capture the video frames of video files so I can have them as individual Bitmaps. So far, I have had good luck with the following code when constructing and rendering my graph. However, when I use this code to play back a .wmv video file, when the samplegrabber is attached, it will play back jumpy or choppy. If I comment out the line where I add the samplegrabber filter, it works fine. I have attempted inserting a WMAsfReader to decode which works, but once it goes to the VMR9 it gives the same behavior. Also, I have gotten it to work correctly when I comment out the IBaseFilter renderer = CreateVideoMixingRenderer9(m_graph, 1); line and have filterGraph.Render(pins[0]); -- the only drawback is that now it renders in an Activemovie widow of its own instead of my control, however the samplegrabber functions correctly and without any skipping. So I am thinking the bug is in the VMR9 / samplegrabbing somewhere. Any help? I am new to this.

• Diagramming Software for a Developer/Designer

  For a long time I've been looking for a good diagramming/vector-based drawing program that meets my needs as a developer. I'd like to: Draw database diagrams Draw flow charts Draw object-modeling diagrams (UML being the standard) Draw other free-form diagrams (basically boxes & arrows with the occasional clipart) Draw mockups of user interfaces and web pages EDIT: I want good-looking electronic-format diagrams that I can show to 3rd parties, not just something for my own internal use. EDIT 2: I'm also looking for Windows software, although I'm toying with the idea of switching to Mac, so a really good Mac-only product might get me to switch. Basically I need a good vector graphic program (with decent grouping, connecting lines, and ideally auto-routing). I'd prefer a diagramming tool that can also be used for drawing (for the UI mockups) rather than a drawing tool that can also be used for diagrams. I've tried Visio on several occasions, and every time I've been disappointed. The interface always seems to get in my way at some point. It's pretty close to what I want, and the latest version (I got the trail from MS) seems to be better than previous ones in terms of usability, but I really don't want to plunk down that sort of cash for a mediocre product. I've tried Dia and Inkscape, and while initially promising and with the right price tag, I found both of them to be lacking in several ways (including some recurring bugs). I've toyed with getting Adobe Illustrator, but I've never used it before, and I have a feeling that it wouldn't handle the diagramming aspect very well, and I don't want to buy a copy just to find out it doesn't meet my needs. So far, the product that I've had the most success with is, sadly, OpenOffice Draw. It's free of course (which lowers my expectations and thus improves my view of it) and its usability is pretty good, but in the end I'd like something more suited to diagramming. I'm willing to spend real money (in the $500-$1K range) for a really good piece of software if it does everything I want it to. The front runner is of course Visio but I'm hoping for more. Does anybody have any recommendations? CONCLUSION: @dlamblin had the most informative post, but the part I gained the most from was his/her (and others) mention of OmniGraffle, not Gliffy. I gave Gliffy a try, and it seemed neet for occational use, but since it's a Flash app (note: not AJAX as dlamblin mentioned) it's still a bit of a pain to use (no keyboard shortcuts for copy/paste was pretty much a deal breaker for me). I also tried SmartDraw, but it had 3-strikes-you're-out against it: The trial period was only 7 days long. It used some nonstandard (and visually jarring) GUI widget toolkit for its UI. At the very least it makes me suspicious (how do I know it will actually work & support the standard Windows features?) It crashed on me early into my trial. OmniGraffle looks like exactly what I want... except that it's Mac-only (so I couldn't give it a try). However, it got good reviews from my Mac-owning coworker, and I hope to try it on a friend's Mac soon. If it's good enough then I might spring for a new MacBook.

When that loading thread finishes, it returns the Bitmap to be set on the ImageView (I do this using AsyncTask or Handler). Because I recycle ImageViews, it may be the case that I first want to set a view with Bitmap#1, then later want to set it to Bitmap#2 when the user scrolls down. Bitmap#1 may happen to take longer than Bitmap#2 to load, so it may end up overwriting Bitmap#2 on the view. I solve this by maintaining a WeakHashMap that remembers the last Bitmap I want to set for that view. Below is somewhat a pseudocode for my current approach. Is there any risk when the loading thread calls back to the ImageView later, when the Activity is already destroyed? Moreover, AsyncTask has some global thread-pool underneath, so if lengthy tasks are not canceled when they're not needed anymore, I may end up wasting time loading things users don't see. My current design of keeping this thing globally is too ugly, and may eventually cause some leaks that are beyond my understanding. Instead of making ImageLoader a singleton like this, I'm thinking of actually creating separate ImageLoader objects for different Activities, then when an Activity gets destroyed, all its AsyncTask will be canceled. Is this too awkward? Anyway, I wonder if there is a safe and standard way of doing this in Android. In addition, I don't know iPhone but is there a similar problem there and do they have a standard way to do this kind of task? Many thanks.

It is working fine on Chrome, Firefox and Safari. I feel that the issue is because of TinyMCE script inclusion because on commenting the lines that include the tiny_mce.js and the support_page.js, the popup renders with no issues. I am also using the latest TinyMCE release. Please let me know why this is happening and what could be the resolution.

• JFreeChart CategoryPlot overwrites categories

  Hi, I am new to using JFreeChart and I'm sure there is a simple solution to my problem . . PROBLEM: I have a chart that shows multiple "events types" along the date X axis. The Y axis shows the "event category". My problem is that only the latest date of an event type is shown for each category. In the example below The chart shows data points for Event Type 1 at June 20th(Category 1) and at June 10th (Category 2). I had also added a data point for June 10th, Category 1 but the June 20th point erases it. I think I am misunderstanding how the CategoryPlot is working. Am I using the wrong type of chart? I thought a scatter chart would be the ticket but it only accepts numerical values. I need to have discrete string categories on my Y-axis. • Mobile App Data Syncronization

  Let's say I have a mobile app that uses HTML5 SQLite DB (and/or the HTML5 key-value store). Assets (media files, PDFs, etc.) are stored locally on the mobile device. Luckily enough, the mobile device is a read-only copy of the "centralized" storage, so the mobile device won't have to propagate changes upstream. However, as the server changes assets (creates new ones, modifies existing, deletes old ones) I need to propagate those changes back to the mobile app. Assume that server changes are grouped into changesets (version number n) that contain some information (added element XYZ, deleted id = 45, etc.) and that the mobile device has limited CPU/bandwidth, so most of the processing has to take place on the server. I can think of a couple of methods to do this. All have trade-offs and at this point, I'm unsure which is the right course of action... Method 1: For change set n, store the "diff" of the current n and previous n-1. When a client with version y asks if there have been any changes, send the change sets from version y up to the current version. e.g. added item 334, contents: xxx. Deleted picture 44. Deleted PDF 11. Changed 33. added picture 99. Characteristics: Diffs take up space, although in theory would be kept small. However, all diffs must be kept around indefinitely (should a v1 app have not been updated for a year, must apply v2..v100). High latency devices (mobile apps) will incur a penalty to send lots of small files (assume cannot be zipped or tarr'd up into one file) Very few server CPU resources required, as all it does is send the client a list of files "Dumb" - if I change an item in change set 3, and change it to something else in 4, the client is going to perform both actions, even though #3 is rendered moot by #4. Or, if an asset is added in #4 and removed in #5 - the client will download a file just to delete it later. Method 2: Very similar to method 1 except on the server, do some sort of a diff between the change sets represented by the app version and server version. Package that up and send that single change set to the client. Characteristics: Client-efficient: The client only has to process one file, duplicate or irrelevant changes are stripped out. Server CPU/space intensive. The change sets must be diff'd and then written out to a file that is then sent to the client. Makes diff server scalability an issue. Possibly ways to cache the results and re-use them, but in the wild there's likely to be a lot of different versions so the diff re-use has a limit Diff algorithm is complicated. The change sets must be structured in such a way that an efficient and effective diff can be performed. Method 3: Instead of keeping diffs, write out the entire versioned asset collection to a mobile-database import file. When client requests an update, send the entire database to client and have them update their assets appropriately. Characteristics: Conceptually simple -- easy to develop and deploy Very inefficient as the client database is restored every update. If only one new thing was added, the whole database is refreshed. Server space and CPU efficient. Only the latest version DB needs kept around and the server just throws the file to the client. Others?? Thoughts? Thanks!!

• Any tool to make git build every commit to a branch in a seperate repository?

  A git tool that meets the specs below is needed. Does one already exists? If not, I will create a script and make it available on GitHub for others to use or contribute. Is there a completely different and better way to solve the need to build/test every commit to a branch in a git repository? Not just to the latest but each one back to a certain staring point. Background: Our development environment uses a separate continuous integration server which is wonderful. However, it is still necessary to do full builds locally on each developer's PC to make sure the commit won't "break the build" when pushed to the CI server. Unfortunately, with auto unit tests, those build force the developer to wait 10 or 15 minutes for a build every time. To solve this we have setup a "mirror" git repository on each developer PC. So we develop in the main repository but anytime a local full build is needed. We run a couple commands in a in the mirror repository to fetch, checkout the commit we want to build, and build. It's works extremely lovely so we can continue working in the main one with the build going in parallel. There's only one main concern now. We want to make sure every single commit builds and tests fine. But we often get busy and neglect to build several fresh commits. Then if it the build fails you have to do a bisect or manually figure build each interim commit to figure out which one broke. Requirements for this tool. The tool will look at another repo, origin by default, fetch and compare all commits that are in branches to 2 lists of commits. One list must hold successfully built commits and the other lists commits that failed. It identifies any commit or commits not yet in either list and begins to build them in a loop in the order that they were committed. It stops on the first one that fails. The tool appropriately adds each commit to either the successful or failed list after it as attempted to build each one. The tool will ignore any "legacy" commits which are prior to the oldest commit in the success list. This logic makes the starting point possible in the next point. Starting Point. The tool building a specific commit so that, if successful it gets added to the success list. If it is the earliest commit in the success list, it becomes the "starting point" so that none of the commits prior to that are examined for builds. Only linear tree support? Much like bisect, this tool works best on a commit tree which is, at least from it's starting point, linear without any merges. That is, it should be a tree which was built and updated entirely via rebase and fast forward commits. If it fails on one commit in a branch it will stop without building the rest that followed after that one. Instead if will just move on to another branch, if any. The tool must do these steps once by default but allow a parameter to loop with an option to set how many seconds between loops. Other tools like Hudson or CruiseControl could do more fancy scheduling options. The tool must have good defaults but allow optional control. Which repo? origin by default. Which branches? all of them by default. What tool? by default an executable file to be provided by the user named "buildtest", "buildtest.sh" "buildtest.cmd", or buildtest.exe" in the root folder of the repository. Loop delay? run once by default with option to loop after a number of seconds between iterations.

• Configuring Cruise Control Net with sourcesafe - Unable to load array item 'executable'

  Hi all, I'm trying to create a continuous integration environment. To do so, I've used a guide that can be found at http://www.15seconds.com/issue/040621.htm. In this step by step, the goal is to create a CI with CCNet, NAnt, NUni, NDoc, FxCop and source safe. I've been able to create my build by using the command prompt (despite the the different versions issues). The problem has come with the configuration of ccnet.config I've made some changes because of the new versions, but I'm still getting errors when starting the CCNet server. Can anyone help me to fix this issue or point where to find a guide with this scenario? The error that I'm getting: Unable to instantiate CruiseControl projects from configuration document. Configuration document is likely missing Xml nodes required for properly populating CruiseControl configuration. • Problem Implementing StructureMap in VB.Net Conversion of SharpArchitecture

  I work in a VB.Net environment and have recently been tasked with creating an MVC enviroment to use as a base to work from. I decided to convert the latest SharpArchitecture release (Q3 2009) into VB, which on the whole has gone fine after a bit of hair pulling. I came across a problem with Castle Windsor where my custom repository interface (lives in the core/domain project) that was reference in the constructor of my test controller was not getting injected with the concrete implementation (from the data project). I hit a brick wall with this so basically decided to switch out Castle Windsor for StructureMap. I think I have implemented this ok as everything compiles and runs and my controller ran ok when referencing a custom repository interface. It appears now that I have/or cannot now setup my generic interfaces up properly (I hope this makes sense so far as I am new to all this). • Python RSS Feeder + Jquery RSS Reader

  I'm trying to implement an RSS Feeder in python using PyRSS2Gen and it created an XML file. Now in jQuery I'm using Google Ajax API's RSS reader and trying to read it. I get an error saying something is wrong. I'm unable to figure out the issue. I've checked some documentation but not able to get it. • Recommended ASP.NET Shared Hosting (USA)

  Ok, I have to admit I'm getting fed up with www.discountasp.net's pricing model and this annoyance has built up over the past 8 years or so. I've been with them for years and absolutely love them on the technical side, however it's getting ridiculously expensive for so little that you get. I mean here's my scenario: 1) I am running 2 SQL Server databases which costs me $10/ea per month so that's $20/month for 2 and I only get 500 mb disk space which is horrible 2) I am paying $10/mo just for the hosting itself which I only get 1 gig of disk space! I mean common! 3) I am simply running 2 small apps (Screwturn Wiki & Subtext Blog)...so I don't really care if it's up 99% or not, it's not worth paying a total of $300 just to keep these 2 apps running over discountasp.net Anyone else feel the same? Yes, I know they have great support, probably have great servers running behind this but in the end I really don't care as long as my site is up 95% or better. Yes, the hosting toolset rocks. But you know I bet you I can find a similar set somewhere else. I like how I can totally control IIS 7 at discountasp and I can control my own app pool etc. That's very powerful and essential. But anyone have any good alternatives to discountasp that gives me close to the same at a much more reasonable cost point? I mean http://www.m6.net/prices.aspx gives you 10 SQL Databases for $7 and 200 gigs disk space! I don't know about their tools or support but just looking at those numbers and some other hosts I've seen, I feel that discountasp.net is way out of line. They don't even offer any purchasing discounts such as it would be nice if my 2nd SQL Server is only $5/month not $10...stuff like this, to make it much more realistic and fair. Opinions (people who do have discountasp.net, people who have left them, or people who have another host they like)??? But geez $300 just to host a couple DBs and lightweight open source apps? Not worth the price they are charging. I'm almost at a price point that enables me to get a decent dedicated server! I really don't care about beta ASP.NET frameworks support. Not a big deal to me. If you have alternative suggestions rather than your experience with discountasp, I'd like to know how their toolset is. Do you have complete control over your DB in terms of adding users, and same goes for the web app pool, etc.? Discountasp.net's control panel rocks. I don't want to loose the ability to at least control and add virtual directories, recycle my dedicated app pool myself, backup my sql database myself, through tools which is what discountasp does give you. I'd also want to know that the hoster at least gets the latest and greatest in terms of non-beta ASP.NET related frameworks available to its shared hosters.

• Problem with URL encoded parameters in URL view helper

  So my problem is kinda weird, it only occurs when I test the application offline (on my PC with WampServer), the same code works 100% correctly online. What the hell? I'm using the latest version of WampServer (WampServer 2.0i [11/07/09]). Everything else works.
