• Is there an alternative to HTML Web Sockets, now that Firefox 4 has disabled them?

  I've been checking out some of the latest multiplayer engines in HTML all supporting multi-user games (Very nice) - I believe all these engines use Web Sockets for communication. That’s why we’ve decided to disable support for WebSocket in Firefox 4, starting with beta 8 due to a protocol-level security issue. Beta 7 of Firefox has support for the -76 version of the protocol, the same version that’s included with Chrome and Safari. Beta 8 of Firefox 4 will remove that support. Anne van Kesteren of Opera also announced that Opera are dropping Websocket support. We are confident that other browser developers will follow. Is anyone aware of an alternate or is it Chrome or do we need to just sit and wait for the next release of the major browsers. • Problem with APTonCD application

  I created a iso image using aptoncd & burned it to a dvd. Now when i tried to restore, the program does not detect the dvd in the drive. It shows "Please insert a disc in the drive." and if we click "ok" it shows E: Failed to mount the cdrom. The dvd is in the drive itself. • Strategy for backwards compatibility of persistent storage

  In my experience, trying to ensure that new versions of an application retain compatibility with data storage from previous versions can often be a painful process. What I currently do is to save a version number for each 'unit' of data (be it a file, database row/table, or whatever) and ensure that the version number gets updated each time the data changes in some way. I also create methods to convert from v1 to v2, v2 to v3, and so on. That way, if I'm at v7 and I encounter a v3 file, I can do v3-v4-v5-v6-v7. So far this approach seems to be working out well, but I haven't had to make use of it extensively yet so there may be unforseen problems. I'm also concerned that if the objects I'm loading change significantly, I'll either have to keep around old versions of the classes or face updating all my conversion methods to handle the new class definition. Is my approach sound? Are there other/better approaches I could be using? Are there any design patterns applicable to this problem?

This replaces their existing spellchecker (http://submain.com/products/codespell.aspx)  which is being discontinued. If you buy GhostDoc Pro now (I urge you to as it helps tremendously in documenting both C# and VB.NET code) , be sure to include Licence Protection as it means you will get the next version that includes the spell-checker free! Why is a spell checker important? By spell checking all your comments, you will make your documentation much easier to read. This means that instead of you being distracted by typographic errors, your mind will be free to see errors in what has been written. Remember the next person that has to struggle to read your code could well be yourself! So be kind to your self. Do the following: Document whole source files in VB.NET of C# with GhostDoc Pro Run Stylecop and fix the issues it uncovers. Run the spellchecker (when it is available) Add remarks where necessary Specify in the project to produce XML documentation Compile the XML using Sandcastle to help files Review the help files and ask yourself if the explanations are sufficient.

• Laggy Graphics After Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10

  I noticed some issues concerning the graphics after I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. More specifically: Dash tends to be more "laggy" than it used to be. When I switch desktops you can clearly see the screen going frame by frame. Menu bar is also "laggy". When I open GIMP, the menu bar is useless after a while - it takes seconds to refresh. The problems seem to appear after some seconds of use. • Upgrading specific pieces of KDE 4.x

  So this is going to be one of those "is this even possible?" questions. I need to upgrade a piece of my KDE from 4.8.5 to 4.9. Specifically, I need to upgrade Gwenview from the 2.85 version in KDE 4.8.5 to 2.9 version in KDE 4.9. It seems trivial but it's actually a fairly big deal for me. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.04, and that upgraded my Gwenview to 2.8x. The issue is that the Gwenview 2.8 releases accidentally broke a feature that I rely upon very heavily. It's a known bug that was corrected in 2.9. Unfortunately, the only package available in Synaptic is 4.8.5, which contains Gwenview 2.85. To make matters worse I'm not sure that I can simply take my whole KDE to 4.9 as I am running an older Toshiba Satellite with the Intel 945GMA chipset that I was shocked managed to hold up under the weight of 12.04 as it is. Well, actually it didn't. I had to install Cairo Dock as Unity 2D was hopeless with this chipset. But anyway, I desperately need to get to Gwenview 2.9 without the potential system-wide implosion of upgrading KDE to 4.9. Possible?

• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it. • Missing driver ASUS PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter

  I have problems with getting an Asus PCE-N53 11n N600 PCI-E Adapter card to work on my desktop computer. As far as I can tell no drivers are installed for the card. I know I can manually download the drivers directly from Asus, but I would rather not go that route.   #cross { font-size: 72pt; } sadly another long lasting friend is about to be buried in the wet, cold data void that holds past programs (... and AOL CDs). The Essbase Excel Add In is about to be de-continued (see  Doc ID 1466700.1) in January '13. The (already out) version 11.1.2.2.x of the Excel Add In must be considered the last release of this particular program (Unless the guys from Applied OLAP bring out their own version next to the openOffice Add In that they already sport). As expected, SmartView achieved parity in functionality with Release 11.1.2.1.102 and ever since then it was just a question of time when our old buddy would get the shoe. For all users out there like me that have known and worked with the Excel Add In for the last decade(s) this is a loss. SmartView may have functionality parity, and may altogether be the stronger, open technology - capable of Planning forms, connection to HFM etc. .But (from my personal point of view) it will not give the end user the same direct access to his databases, with nothing between him and his Essbase Server. Of course it was to be expected that only one of the two could survive and it was obvious that this would be SmartView, so this does not come as a surprise. Still.A minute for an old friend . . . . . . Thank you, and let us look forward! Unless you had other plans for the upcoming season, why not spend it investigating SmartView for your Essbase interaction needs. We hear that the days between Christmas and new year hold unlimited potential to test out new things. Or take it as a new year resolution: "I will switch to SmartView at the earliest possible moment".

• MPlayer does not work

  Using the xubuntu desktop, on Ubuntu Raring updated from Quantal. MPlayer never really worked. No video, no audio, nothing. • Discs in DVD Drive not being read

  Does anyone have an experience with Ubuntu that is no longer reading discs in the DVD drive? This is my first time Ubuntu does not see the disc :| The disc is fine and works on my other Ubuntu computers. The drive is there and powered. I can even type in eject in a terminal and the drive will open. Using the command: sudo lshw -C disk I am able to see info about my drive too. Actually BOTH of my internal DVD drives cannot read discs anymore. • Dell xps 15z fan issue in ubuntu 12.04

  I just updated to ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell laptop xps 15z. The trouble is that I hear a slight ticking sound every 3rd second, probably from a fan. This is a new issue in this ubuntu version. I use the recommended boot options for grub, i.e. acpi_backlight=vendor, but I do not use any acpi=off or acpi=noirq. Is there a way to fix this issue from ubuntu, by maybe controlling the fans somehow? EDIT: Notice, the sound goes away as the fan speeds up, (when doing calculations or such), so it is really a fan issue. EDIT2: I have located the issue: If I use conky 1.9, together with the command execpi for a python application, then the sound appears, and the noise syncs with the update interval for conky (NOT for the update interval for execpi!). The noise seems to be proportional to the complexity of the drawing that is needed. This is very strange, as this issue was not in the prev. version of conky I used. The solution was to increase the update interval for conky from 0.5 to 3, i.e. update every 3rd second instead of twice a second.

• Calling a .NET C# class from XSLT

  If you've ever worked with XSLT, you'd know that it's pretty limited when it comes to its programming capabilities. Try writing a for loop in XSLT and you'd know what I mean. XSLT is not designed to be a programming language so you should never put too much programming logic in your XSLT. That code can be a pain to write and maintain and so it should be avoided at all costs. Keep your xslt simple and put any complex logic that your xslt transformation requires in a class. Here is how you can create a helper class and call that from your xslt. • How to build the mainline kernel source package?

  Ubuntu kernel PPA only provides linux-headers*.deb and linux-image*.deb packages. How can I build the corresponding linux-source*.deb package ? Context: I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.10 with the mainline kernel (3.2 rc6 now) to get a better support for my sandybridge IGP (Dell E6420 laptop with intel i5-2520M CPU). Appears, i'd like to install this touchpad driver, ALPS touchpads being badly supported (see previous link bug report), while waiting for upstream support in kernel version 3.3. Problem is, DKMS keeps complaining about not finding the full kernel source: Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed. Appears I may not need the full source but I'd still like to try having it installed to see if it solve my problem. What I tried : Uncompressing the kernel.org source archive in /usr/src/. DKMS still complaining. Manually updating the kernel source package with uupdate and the mainline source package like explained here. Did not succeed. Manually building the linux-source package following @roadmr and @elmicha instructions. I eventually succeeded to build it but DKMS still complained about the missing source. At last I noticed an error I did not catch in the first place while reinstalling the kernel headers. Appears the .deb I got may have been corrupted, downloading it again did the trick :) Alas, while DKMS agreed to compile the module i ran into the following error which appears to have already been reported. This issue isn't yet solved but I won't try to because of the following: in the end I decided to test the precise kernel version 3.2-rc6 through the xorg-edgers ppa which appears to be correctly patched: it works. Nevertheless, it might still be of some interest to know how to build the mainline linux-source package as the Ubuntu Kernel Team doesn't provide it. Not to mention that I learned a lot in the process ^^

• Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically. • Radeon 9200 Driver?

  I've been using Linux for a while, but haven't really done more than installed programs. I have Ubuntu 12.04 with an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card. Ubuntu didn't recognize it during the install. All I want is a driver. Preferably the proprietary driver, but I'll settle for an open-source one if I need to. I went to the AMD support website, and whenever I click on the download link for "ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 8.28.8" I get redirected to the main AMD website. I tried this on Firefox, Chrome, even booted up my netbook and tried it on IE9. Does anybody have a download link? And if not, a link to download an open-source alternative? • Troubleshooting VMware on Ubuntu

  Summary of different problems while using VMware products on Ubuntu. This article is going to be updated from time to time with new information about running VMware products more or less smoothly on Ubuntu. Following are links to existing articles: Running VMware Player on Linux (xubuntu Hardy Heron) Running VMware Server on Linux (version 1.0.6 on xubuntu) Using ext4 in VMware machine   VMware mouse grab/ungrab problem (Source: LinuxInsight) Upgrading GTK library in Ubuntu since Karmic Koala gives you a strange mouse behaviour. Even if you have "Grab when cursor enters window" option set, VMware won't grab your pointer when you move mouse into the VMware window. Also, if you use Ctrl-G to capture the pointer, VMware window will release it as soon as you move mouse around a little bit. Quite annoying behavior... Fortunately, there's a simple workaround that can fix things until VMware resolves incompatibilities with the new GTK library. VMware Workstation ships with many standard libraries including libgtk, so the only thing you need to do is to force it to use it's own versions. The simplest way to do that is to add the following line to the end of the /etc/vmware/bootstrap configuration file and restart the Workstation. export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" The interface will look slightly odd, because older version of GTK is being used, but at least it will work properly. Note: After upgrading a new Linux kernel, it is necessary to compile the VMware modules, this requires to temporarily comment the export line in /etc/vmware/bootstrap.

• Video game "Gish" will only launch from command line

But when I try to launch it from the LXDE menu, it will not start. Edit: Here is some additional information, as requested by Eliah Kagan below: I tried editing /usr/share/applications/gish.desktop, as recommended, but it had no effect However, ~/.xsession-errors contained the following error: [: 8: x86_64: unexpected operator ./gish_32: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 I think there's a problem with the /opt/gish/gi.sh shell script. This is its contents: cd /opt/gish/ MACHINE_TYPE=`uname -m` if [ ${MACHINE_TYPE} == 'x86_64' ]; then ./gish_64 else ./gish_32 fi I'm not too familiar with Bash, so hopefully someone else can point out the error. I have a 64-bit machine. I think that when the script is run from the command line, it's properly launching the 64-bit version (/opt/gish/gish_64), but when it's run from the LXDE menu, it's launching the 32-bit version (/opt/gish/gish_32), which is causing the libGL.so.1 error. However, this may be related to my libGL.so.1 problems with 2 other games.

• Unable to start VMWare Workstation after upgrade to 13.04

  After upgrading to 13.04 I am unable to start VMWorkstation. I get the following message: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. Kernel Headers 3.8.0-19-generic Kernel headers for version 3.8.0-19-generic were not found. If you have installed them in a non-default path you can specify the path below. Does anyone have any idea what to do next? Ubuntu 13.04 64bit If I direct the path to: /usr/src/linux-headers-3.8.0-19-generic I get the following message: C header files matching your running kernel were not found. Thanks Additional: As suggested I run this in terminal: cd /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build/include/linux sudo ln -s ../generated/utsrelease.h sudo ln -s ../generated/autoconf.h sudo ln -s ../generated/uapi/linux/version.h However, now I get the following: Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the kernel CANCEL / INSTALL I INSTALL, the window closes and nothing happens.... • 12.0.4.3 - Missing Battery Icon, auto Suspend not working, Keyboard shortcuts volume up/down no longer working

  Problems I am experiencing: Battery Icon not showing up unity bar (top right corner). Volume Up/Down/Mute not working. Bluetooth hot keys described above also not working.Brightness up/down keys on this keyboard no longer working (apple wireless keyboard) Laptop no longer suspends when lid is shut. I have to go to 'power' button on top right corner and click on 'Suspend' All was working flawlessly until I did the following: I have recently upgraded to Nvidia propriety driver version 319 {version recommended}. Installed Xscreensaver and then removed it and went back to default screensaver. Done a system update (1st since installing) and now currently running: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic #47~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 2 16:19:35 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NOTE: Base system was ubuntu 12.04.3 installed from ISO however lsb_release reports "No LSB modules are available" 4.installed psensor. I have check power setting (via Settings) and power setting via dconf-editor and set to recommended settings as described in posts detailing solution to this problem. - I have disabled 1) Nvdia settings at startup and 2) psensor at startup but this does not help. I am using an HP DV7 with 2GB Nvidia card. Not using any fancy graphics features. Recommendations? Thanks.

• Collabnet Subversion and Self Signed Certificates

  We installed Collabnet as our subversion server recently.  This is the first time that we’ve used it.  In general, it seems pretty good, but we ran into a problem with it.  People were getting the following error in Tortoise: OPTIONS of ’https://xxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxx/svn/xxxxx’: SSL handshake failed: SSL error code – 1/1/336032856 (https://xxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxx) The odd thing is that for some people, it worked, for others, it didn’t!  I also couldn’t find anything useful out on the internet. We had checked the Subversion Server should serve via https option in the settings, and all of the ports were open, etc. This option causes a self signed certificate to be used. What we discovered: Tortoise must use the same url as is in the Hostname field on the General settings for collabnet or you’ll get this error.  Basically, some people were using https://svn.xxxxxxx.xxxxx and others were using https://computername.xxxxxxxx.xxxx.  Because the host name said used the computer name version, the whole thing broke.  By changing the host name to the svn version, which is what they should be using, the problem went away.  The users do get the “Accept Certificate” prompt, but we can live with that! • How to install nvidia drivers (GT 440 ) on Xubuntu 12.10 , screen res gone to 640x480 :(

  Hi all after days of endless googling I finally gave in and decided to try and directly ask for help. I have just installed Xubuntu and updated to 12.10 on a pretty old (12 years) machine, and I am now struggling to install the correct drivers for the nvidia 440 gt card.. I have managed to get "additional drivers" but the app does not show in the menu, I went through a few procedures which ended up in my screen going no higher than 640x480, and tried all the sudo apt-get variations with nvidia-current and current updates... I think I got the right version of the drivers ( 93.43.07 ) but they won't install from terminal as they say I am running an X server. So I learnt how to shut the graphic interface but then I try and install them from there but after I write the exact same command (sudo home/username/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07.pkg1.run ) nothing happens and the terminal says something like command not found. I am desperate for help if anybody could point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. There are lots of similar topics on installing nvidia drivers but I seem to understand that current drivers are no good for my old GPU. So if anybody could show me how to install the right version that would be excellent. Thanks in advance! Jack
