• Windows 7: Setting up backup to an external hard drive on another computer on the network

  I have an external hard drive connected to a Windows 7 (Home Edition) computer. I have another computer (with Windows 7 Ultimate), and I want to have the Windows 7 Ultimate back up to the same external hard drive, without having to disconnect and move the external hard drive from the Home Edition PC. When I get to the "Set up backup" dialog within Windows 7, it asks me where to save the backup. I select "Save on a network". However, when I enter "\\computername\harddrivename" under Browse, the "OK" button remains grayed out. The button remains grayed out unless I also enter a Username and Password under "Network credentials". However, the account I have on the other computer doesn't have a password for it. To un-gray out the button I must enter a fake password, allowing me to click "OK", but then obviously I get a "bad password" error. Does anyone know how to get around this problem? (Seems kind of ridiculous.) I made sure that the security settings with the external hard drive on the other computer are full access to Everyone, so permissions is not the problem. I also thought about using Homegroup instead of the regular security settings, but there is no obvious way to go about it that way, either.

• Mail queue directory stuck in IIS SMTP server

  Hi there, We have an IIS SMTP server which sends out a largish number of mails (4000 or so) in batches overnight, and recently we've seen mails get "stuck" in the queue directory. Normally restarting the SMTP service seems to fix this, but it's happened a few times so I'm looking for more information. We sent out around 12,000 emails last night in 3 batches of roughly 4000. Around 10 hours later there are still 2000 or so in the queue directory which don't seem to be leaving the queue. Any new mails which appear in the queue are picked up almost immediately and sent to their destination, but these 2000 or so don't seem to move. Looking at the date modified on the emails some match up with the time they were sent, but around 1000 of them have modified dates stretching up to now. e.g. there was one mail with a date in the message headers of 5:30 this morning, but it's date modified is 11:50 and there are 3 other messages with a date modified of 11:50, then 5 with 11:49, 2 with 11:45 stretching back for a few hours and all with actual message headers far earlier. I believe 250 and 240 indicate success, but I don't know what all the 0s are. Could someone with more experience of mail server troubleshooting give me a hand or tell me what to try next. • ESX 4.0 space: DASD, NAS, or ?

  I put together an ESX box for better management, but its performance is a WTF item; I'm a noob at dealing with ESX, so I'm looking for a laundry-list of reading material to help me straighten this out so I can go back to .NET programming. Current storage system: We're running Raid5+Hotspare (8x500 GB spindles) on a PERC6i on a Dell 2910. Due to ESX limitatios, the PERC is showing the storage as 1x2TB + 1x800GB "partitions." I'm not sure of the setup's configuration (stride / stripe / ???) at all. Our Applications We have a SBS server as well as a minor (2x50 GB, but growing at 10GB/month) database server... Our application that lives on the database VM is CPU and I/O insense; it's a database churning excercise mixed in with a lot of computation on the data (fixing that performance is what I'm supposed to be working on)... Perfomance Issue When I do a backup, restore, or worse (copy a backup from 1 vm to another to move it to the QA VM), the entire system slows to a crawl (even "unrelated" VMs). I originally thought a DASD situation would be quite good since you had PCI-x bandwidth, but the systemwide slowdown is killing productivity. Questions What should I do to make an intelligent decision about NAS vs RAID vs SAN vs DASD? Are there sweet spots/ugly spots in the storage setup? Can you use a SSD PCI-X card in ESX for the tempdb? Good/Bad idea? Is there any way to "share" some image in a copy-on-write fashion? Most of the "Backup-Copy-Restore" is to "put a clean image on the dev boxes"; if I could have them "share" the master image, the "big copy" (2x50 GB) would only need to be done once per week instead of once per dev per week...[runtime performance isn't a concern with the dev boxes, but the backup/copy/restore kills production, SBS, and everything else on the box]

• Programmer configuring a new network

  I'm in the process of expanding my home network from a couple of laptops on a wireless Verizon FiOS router to include: Linksys 24-port switch Cisco Pix 515 Cisco 3640 router One new development desktop and three new machines to act as a db server, web server and a backup system. My company is moving offices and we've decommissioned some older hardware, which I was able to pick up for the cost of the labor to move it home from the office. The benefits to working with dedicated web and db servers are very valuable to me. I know very little about network topology, other than that everything plugs into the switch, which then plugs into the cheap Verizon router. (Verizon provides a coax connection that the router must translate into Ethernet before I can use it with any of this equipment). Questions: What is the recommended topology for this equipment? Verizon router - Pix - 3600 - switch? Is the 3600 even necessary or desirable? The Verizon router has one WAN port and 4 client ports, all 10/100. Is there any performance benefit at all to wiring multiple connections from the verizon router to the switch, assuming I don't use the Pix? Should I use the Pix? Software firewalls are a pain, and seem silly if I have a device like this lying around. Anything else I should know? Am I wasting my time with this? I also obtained a 7 foot rack, shelves, patch panels, UPS, patch panels, etc, which are going into a conveniently air conditioned closet. All constructive advice appreciated.

• changing filesystem format from xfs to ext4 without losing data

  I have a fresh Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) running on a laptop. where I defined the filesystems as: mount point / on ext4 (46 Gb) mount point /home on jfs (63 GB) swap as 3 Gb I left the machine over night to do some task, without AC power supply. next day in the morning I found it on standby, task completed, but filesystem was not reachable. it gave me I/O error it seems that there is a problem with jfs and standby. anyways, to avoid any hassle, I want to move this mount point from jfs format to ext4. can I do this without losing data and without the need to place the data in a temporary location until transformation is done? sorry to mention that, but I recall back in the windows days, we would change a FAT16 to FAT32 or a FAT32 to NTFS without having to lose the data. I hope this is available on Linux. Update The /home filesystem was xfs not jfs, and it seems there is a bug with this filesystem for some reason, I had to re-install the OS twice until I ended up with ext4 for the entire / However, as a conclusion, it seems that there is no way to make a conversion

• ASP.NET sending email through exchange problem

  I have an exchange 2010 server running on Windows 2008 R2, I also have a remote webserver running Windows 2003 with multiple sites on it (all asp.net mvc 2 sites). I setup a Transport in exchange and all the websites on my remote web server can send email no problem to anyone in the exchange server and to any external domain. Now for my problem. I am having issues with that webserver, so I moved one of the websites to run on my exchange server, it runs well (low hit website) except that email doesn't work from that site. I tried changing the Transport in exchange to add the IP address of the local machine and the 127.0.0.1 addresses and it still isn't sending any email. Any ideas on how to get this working? The remote websites can still send email no problem, the version of the site that I had to move on the remote server can still email, but on the exchange server for that website email does not send. I would guess it is a Transport issue, since it is running on the same server a firewall shouldn't be the issue. I changed the smtp setting in web.config to localhost, and now I do receive email to my account on the exchange server, but I do not receive any emails on outside addresses. To add more description, this is a custom developed asp.net mvc 2 website. And no errors were being generated in the code when sending the email in either case.

• Mac Grey/White Screen of Death

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen. Update (18/05/10): I've been told that I could be getting the White/Grey screen of death because the optical flex cable is damaged (aparently this is common). Apparently the Optical Drive is part of the POST sequence, and an inability to read the drive can result in failure for the system to move on to other bootable volumes. More info here. I will disable the optical drive and see if that works.

• Blu-ray BD-R: Would you physically store it in a CaseLogic Wallet pocket?

  I keep several backup copies of my material and files. For my DVDs, one set of copies is kept in a CaseLogic wallet folder pack, so that I can easily move this around when visiting friends, family or for business. This is highly convenient. The other sets are kept in their jewel cases in hard plastic see thru storage boxes. Although CaseLogic wallet material is designed to be abrasion free, their caveat is that external dust will be the cause of any blemishes. If hard dust gets in these pockets, which is inevitable, this will occasionally cause light hair like scratches on the disc surface as the discs are removed and returned for access to their contents. This is of no consequence as the laser and error correction can more than cope with this. I'm aware that the blu-ray spec requires anti-scratch in disc surfaces but was wondering that, given the smaller pits, would dust and light scratches from wallet storage cause more problems with blu-rays than they would with DVDs? I'm using Blu-ray BD-R and BD-R DL write once media.

• Can I setup a test server and then transfer everything to a diff. production server?

  Hello, I am going to be setting up a "real" server, but it's not being shipped for another week. I was planning on setting up most of the server's functionality using an extra workstation I have. I wanted to set-up Windows Server 2003 or 2008, IIS, Terminal Services, Firewall, and Antivirus on this regular machine. I'd also be installing software like Winzip and VMWare that'll be used on the server. I can't ghost the machine, as far as I've done in the past, because the motherboard/cpu/etc. will all be different. Is there any way to export all of the "server settings" or something like that so I can move everything from test to production? Is there any software out there that does something similar to this? Some things I'm going to have to wait on such as setting up the file server completely in its raid configuration, but I'd like to get the simple server stuff and network setup out of the way. Has anyone done this before? Do I need software, open-source or not, to do this? Or maybe there's a way to export all the server settings in some way? Thanks in advance! Justin

  i wanto to implement the following scenario: we use a postfix mailserver. to archive all old and new mails, i want to setup a second postfix on our fileserver and create a single mailbox "archive". then every mail gets forwarded as bcc to this mailbox automatically. now, i want to create different folders in a maildir structure and let the server move each mail to the right subfolder of the mailbox based on its sender or receiver. e.g. when we get a mail to one of our employees named "John Doe" at [email protected], the mail should be moved to "Inbox/John Doe Incoming". the same applies when john doe sends a mail, folder would be "Inbox/John Doe Outgoing". how can i implement this filter behaviour. i heard of Procmail and Maildrop. Which of the two would you prefer? Which is more easy to configure? Any out-of-box solutions here? thanks in advance!

• Chrome's new window disappear from desktop

  I'm having this problem with Chrome on a Windows 7 x86 machine. I'm using Chrome for a locally hosted intranet web app. In the web app, there's frequent use of new window which popup, which works like a dialog box for the app. The problem started since yesterday. All the new windows doesn't appear on top and no where to be found on the desktop. But it does appear on the taskbar. Clicking the button on the taskbar doesn't bring up the window as well. I've also tried Alt+Space, then Move, it doesn't work. I only found 2 way to bring it up, Maximize or Show as tab. What could have caused this and how should I fix it? Thanks EDIT: I've configure to not group taskbar buttons. EDIT: I've just gone through the javascript of the button, it call window.open to display the popup. I can see the popup flicker and disappear. If I step through the code, the popup will display properly, sometime. Also, if I click the button twice, it will also display the popup, but at a much smaller size, less than 100x100

• Upgrade an Ubuntu 8.04 installation with VMware Server 1.0.8 and lots of guest OSes to Something Els

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) host machine which is running a whole slew of virtual machines in VMWare Server 1.0.8. Among other guest OSes, there is every release version of Ubuntu since 6.06, OpenSolaris 2009.06, and Windows XP. Right now I access these VMs from a variety of client OSes as well; Linux and Windows via the VMWare server console, and MacOS via X-forwarding the host machine's server console. I'd like to upgrade the host to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), but from what I can tell, getting VMWare Server 1.x to work on a more recent version of Linux is a real pain. While VMware Server 2.x is a bit easier, it's still not packaged as Debian packages, so installing security updates is a big chore. As long as I'm upgrading anyway, I'd like to move to a virtualization solution that will allow me to automate applying updates. The options that I'm aware of right now are KVM (managed via virt-manager) and VirtualBox (as managed by its own tools or via its own libvirt bindings), but I'm open to other suggestions. For each option, I'd like to know how do I convert my guest images to the new format? am I going to have to re-activate my Windows guests (alternatively, "If the virtual hardware is different by default, can I avoid re-activation by changing some virtualization configuration to provide me with more similar virtual hardware") what are the management options like for each client OS (mac, linux, windows)? • How can I track down the cause of ext3 filesystem corruption?

  We have a VMware vSphere 5 environment running CentOS 5.8 virtual machines. In the past two weeks we have had five incidents of virtual machines having a filesytem become corrupt, requiring an fsck to repair. So far we have been unable to reproduce the problem, or identify a root cause. After we had a few servers have this problem, we assumed that there was an issue with the template, so we scrapped all VM's cloned off of the template, destroyed the template, and built a new template from scratch, installed from a newly downloaded CentOS ISO. We use HP EVA SAN's for datastores, and moved from a 4400 to a 6300 after the first problem. Since the move and rebuilding new virtual machines we have seen the issue twice. On one VM we shut down the server, removed two virtual CPUs, and booted it back up again, the problem presented itself almost immediately. On the other VM, we rebooted it, and the problem happened a half hour later. Any tips or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

• What's the lowest cost, legal, Microsoft server stack you can assemble?

  Assuming that you have an app infrastructure that generally only requires: ASP.NET MVC / C# / .NET Database or NoSQL data store (must be accessible from C#) Here's the challenge to you server gods: What is the least expensive configuration that will allow you to deploy to production in a way that doesn't break any licensing rules? In what ways does this solution differ from the "standard" Microsoft deployment scenario? Where does this solution's performance break down once the app begins to scale? I'm not concerned about the hardware, only the server software itself. I would love to hear about any solutions you've personally put into production. Especially if they are unique alternatives. For ideas, consider some of the possible variations, a) any Microsoft server solutions where they have lowered the barrier to entry to compete with OSS, or b) any OSS alternatives to Microsoft products which perform at a similar level. An example of a): SQL Server 2008 Express Edition SP1 is a 100% free version of SQL Server which will scale to the needs of many smaller / early stage applications. An example of b): running the Mono Framework on Linux. An example of differing from the "standard" stack: running Mono on Linux will require a completely different server OS familiarity. None of the Windows-based knowledge really transfers. An example of breaking down under scale: SQL Server Express will only scale to 1GB of memory and 4GB of disk storage. After that point, the application will need to move to one of the paid versions of SQL Server.

• Exchange 2010 remove Arbitration mailbox and mailbox store db

  I have a problem with Exchange 2010 which is a nightmare for me. The problem is, that in Exchange management console i have several store databases in database management tab. only one is mounted, because i am using it. the second one is mounted, but it was used on other server before (now that server is dead). that database mounted status is UNKNOWN. The file of that database does not exist, but it still shows there. I can't remove it from management console, because it has mailboxes. i removed all mailboxes and disabled two arbitrary mailboxes. i can't delete it because i still have one arbitrary mailbox left. i can't move it, because it requires connection to dead server. i can't disable it, because i get error that it is the last one in organization. Can somebody help me? Solved it by using this command: Get-Mailbox -Arbitration -Database db1 | Remove-Mailbox -Arbitration -RemoveLastArbitrationMailboxAllowed Now i have another problem. Exchange management console shows public folder from different server which is dead now. That folder was copied here, but it is not needed anymore. Public folder file has been deleted, and records from ADSI edit has been removed too. But i can't remove that folder from management console. i get an error Exchange isn't able to check for public folder replicas for "My Public Folder Database". Anybody can help me with that?

• `:Zone.Identifier` files keep on appearing in Windows XP virtual machine

  I have a Windows XP Home Edition guest and a Linux Mint 13 host. I use VirtualBox and the ~/Public directory is shared with the guest. It sometimes happens that I use IE on the guest system to download files (until I get a better Windows browser). All of the downloaded files go the the L:\ drive (the ~/Public directory). When they are finished downloading, Windows Explorer adds a :Zone.Identifier file for each file I download. When I extract a downloaded ZIP archive on the guest (on drive L:\), Windows creates a :Zone.Identifier file for every file in the extracted directory. This even occurs if I use the host to move a file to the ~/Public directory. The shared ~/Public directory is on an ext4 partition and the colon character is supposed to be illegal in file names in Windows, but not on the ext4 partition. Is there any way to stop Windows from putting all this rubbish on my filesystem? (I might have to create a shell script to clean up after Windows' act.) Here is what I see in Windows Explorer: By the way, if I were running a Mac OS X host (where colons are illegal file name characters) this would be even more horrendous.

  I have a perl form email script on the servers cgi-bin directory ( /usr/lib/cgi-bin ). /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/cgi-bin/ <Directory "/usr/lib/cgi-bin"> AllowOverride None Options +ExecCGI -MultiViews +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch AddHandler cgi-script cgi pl Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> The issue is with paths. html calls script here: <form name="Request" method="post" action="http://server-test.local/cgi-bin/formprocessorpro.pl" onsubmit="return checkWholeForm49874(this)"> The directory with the templates and configs is passed here: <input type="hidden" name="base_path" value="../contact" /> The path to this form is: http://server-test.local/formstest/contact.htm No matter what variation I try for the base_path I get an error from the formprocessor script that it can't find the directory: An error occurred when opening the Form Configuration File (../contact/form.cfg): No such file or directory. I need to move this script from an old server, configured by a previous sysadmin, to a new server. Since cgi-bin is automatically linked to /usr/lib/cgi-bin and linked such that the script resides: http://server-test.local/cgi-bin/formprocessorpro.pl I would imagine that, given that the templates are in the webroot in a directory called contact, the correct path would be: ../contact Any ideas? • CUPS causes printer to click and doesn't print

  I'm suffering a strange problem with my Cannon iP4850 when trying to use CUPS on a Raspberry Pi (this is not RPi specific, please do not vote to move it). When I plug the printer into my Laptop (OSX) or my Desktop W7 it identifies as a iP4800 and prints perfectly. So I plug it into the Pi (running debian), set it up in CUPS enable sharing and can now see the iP4800 series shared on the network. However if I print to it (using AirPrint etc...); the file gets to CUPS safely (shows in the queue) but when it tries to print the printer clicks (like a loud thunk) 3/4 times and then gives in, with a double amber flashing light. In cups it shows as job completed. Do you know why using the pi and cups would cause what appears to be a hardware fault and what I can do to fix the problem or to provide further debug info? • no mails routed to/from new Exchange 2010

  I have an Exchange Server 2003 up and running for years. Now I am in the mid of transition to Exchange Server 2010, I already installed it, put the latest Servicepack on it and everything seems fine, BUT: Mails do not get delivered to MailBoxes on the new Exchange 2010. e.g. when I create a new mailbox on the old server, Emails in and out to/from it work like a charm. But as soon as I move it to the new server, emails get stuck. Noe delivered from outside or old mailboxes, not send out from the new server to enywhere. Sending between Mailboxes on the new Server of course is working. I can see the connectors between old and new Server in the Exchange 2003 Admin Tool, but I cannot find these nowhere on the new server. I have also setup sending connectors at the new server to send out mails directly, but that does not work. In all other areas, the servers are perfectly working together - moving mailboxes between, seeing each other etc. "just" they dont exchange (!) any emails - Any ideas what I missed? I also followed the hints from: Upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, routing works in one direction only There Emails were transported at least in one direction, in my case they are not transported at all.   Background: When used as an IMAP client against Gmail, Thunderbird 3 (may be the case in v2 also, not sure) will refresh it's list of folders (the folders correspond to Gmail labels) when you do "Download/Sync Now..." or restart the Thunderbird client. Any new folders (labels) created in Gmail will sync to the client and any folders moved/changed/deleted folders in Gmail will move/change/delete on the client as well. (Note: Thunderbird has the concept of "subscribing" to IMAP folders (assumingly allowing you to determine which folders you want, rather than bringing all of them down and dragging loads of data across the wire). When used against Gmail, Thunderbird appears to automatically subscribe to all folders (including when folders are newly created in Gmail), so this might be why the refresh is happening properly.) This behavior is what I want with Exchange. When using Thunderbird with Exchange (2007), the folder list doesn't refresh when folders are added/changed/deleted on the server and/or from a different mail client. When I look at the subscription options, some are checked and some are not (not sure why Thunderbird picked some and not others). And when I add new folders on the server and/or from another client, they never even appear in Thunderbird's list of folders, preventing me from subscribing to them.

  I have a SanDisk Cruser Blade USB stick that suddenly seems to be write protected. I tried running DiskPart but after I write the command "attributes disk clear readonly" it displays this: Microsoft DiskPart version 5.1.3565 ADD - Add a mirror to a simple volume. ACTIVE - Marks the current basic partition as an active boot partition. ASSIGN - Assign a drive letter or mount point to the selected volume. BREAK - Break a mirror set. CLEAN - Clear the configuration information, or all information, off the disk. CONVERT - Converts between different disk formats. CREATE - Create a volume or partition. DELETE - Delete an object. DETAIL - Provide details about an object. EXIT - Exit DiskPart EXTEND - Extend a volume. HELP - Prints a list of commands. IMPORT - Imports a disk group. LIST - Prints out a list of objects. INACTIVE - Marks the current basic partition as an inactive partition. ONLINE - Online a disk that is currently marked as offline. REM - Does nothing. Used to comment scripts. REMOVE - Remove a drive letter or mount point assignment. REPAIR - Repair a RAID-5 volume. RESCAN - Rescan the computer looking for disks and volumes. RETAIN - Place a retainer partition under a simple volume. SELECT - Move the focus to an object. It's like when you type help at the DiskPart prompt, so how do I get past this? This problem started when I plugged the stick into a laptop which had viruses, if that's any help.

• Postfix unable to find local server

  I'm working with postfix on fedora 9 and I'm attempting to make some changes to a system setup by my predecessor. Currently the postfix server on [mail.ourdomain.com] is setup to forward mail sent to two addresses to another server for processing. The other server [www01.ourdomain.com] receives the email and sends it to a PHP script to be processed. Then that PHP script generates and sends a response to the user who sent the original email. We're adding more web servers to the system and as a result we've decided to move these processing scripts to our admin [admin.ourdomain.com] server to make them easier to keep track of. I've already setup and tested the processing scripts on [admin.ourdomain.com], and on the mail server doing the forwarding [mail.ourdomain.com] I added [admin.ourdomain.com] to /etc/hosts and also added another, aside from the one for [www01.ourdomain.com], entry to /etc/postfix/transport for [admin.ourdomain.com]. I also restarted postfix as well. I've tested the communication from [mail.ourdomain.com] to [admin.ourdomain.com] using telnet and the [admin.ourdomain.com] domain and everything runs correctly. But as soon as I change the forward address and attempt to send an email to the mail server I get a bounce message stating "Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=admin.ourdomain.com type=A: Host not found". If I change the forward settings back to [www01.ourdomain.com] then everything works fine. Is there some setting I'm missing in Postfix? The server itself and telnet work fine it just seems to be postfix that's not able to discover the location of [admin.ourdomain.com].

• How can I make the Windows 7 taskbar behave like a cross between the old Quick Launch and new Superbar?

  I really like the taskbar in Windows 7, I think combining buttons to launch apps and the icons that show your running apps is groovy. However, because I like having as much space as possible, I've got small icons enabled and shrunk the bar down to one row. I've also told it not to group the running apps unless there's no space left (to save me having to work harder to find the particular window I want), which also means that they have captions, and are thus quite wide. The (admittedly small) problem this gives me is that I can pin all my favourite apps to the bar, which looks much like the old Quick Launch bar, but when I launch them the running apps because much wider, and the unlaunched apps get lost amongst them. I can manually change the order to fix this, but next time I'll launch a different app and I'll be back to square one. What I'd prefer is for small unlaunched icons to be kept on the left, and wider running apps to move over to the right, which for me would be the best of both worlds. Is there any way I can organise that? I'm aware that one can use the traditional quick launch bar in Windows 7, but that's not what I'm after; I generally prefer the Windows 7 way.

• Windows Server 2008 backup VHD's - is it possible to mount/open in Windows 7?

  Hi All, Is it possible to mount the VHD files created by the Windows Server 2008 backup utility onto a Windows 7 (release) client? Following an array failure I was very worried that there was a problem with both the backup sets on different USB drives as attaching the VHD to a Win 7 box did not show the expected structure (instead they behaved like unformatted disk space). Subsequently, I've attached the backup drive to a 2008r2 machine that I'd intended to be the replacement and the backup set can be browsed without issue (seemingly). When the new disks arrive I'll go through the recovery process and see where we are, but it looks promising so far. Is it simply the case that you can't take server created VHD's and mount them on desktop machines? (Rather than hyper-ventilating at the thought of years of lost photos and email, I'm now just mildly curious) Edit:One thing that has confused things is that the backup utility on Win7 is more restrictive about restoring from external devices than the equivilent on 2008r2. With r2, I can restore files 'from another server' and browse to external storage. Win7 only allows the back to be located on a network share. Once my box of new disks arrive and I've got something to restore onto, I'll move the smaller of the backup VHDs onto network storage reachable by Win7 and see if the VHD is readable. I haven't read up on the VHD process used by the backup app - I'm assuming it's a base VHD and differencing files used for incremental backups and that the restore app understands this. Finally: In retrospect the question should have been, 'can I restore a 2008r2 backup set via a Win 7 client' Thanks

• Simultanious process mysteriously ending

  I'm trying to run a large air quality model, written in FORTRAN, setup with bash scripts, and run in a work queue (slurm.) The first part of the modeling is to run an "entry" model, this runs with MPI in the work queue but only on one process. At one point in the logs, there's a mysterious FORTRAN STOP, and then later the model fails because something wasn't set up properly. This FORTRAN STOP isn't from the main process, which continues running. This is a huge model, but as far as I know there should not be any other processes running at the same time. It consistently fails at the exact same spot. (I can move it by adding debug, but the debug is in the main process) How can I determine what this process is? I've tried added a call to strace -feprocess $SHELL in the run script, but I'm new to this, so if it has offered any info, I haven't been able to use it yet. The is no trace output around the FORTRAN STOP. The whole process occurs so fast that I can't seem to observe it by using ps. Is there a way I can somehow monitor all the processes being initiated from the time the work queue starts? Or some other way I can figure out what is failing? This is running on CentOS 6.4, with Slurm, compiled with PGI 13.
