• Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

  I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?

  I want to create a mobilesubstrate plugin for iPhone OS 3.2 or I tried to setup toolchain on the iPad device. I have installed the iphone-gcc_4.2-20090304-1-9_iphoneos-arm package and all the relevant packages from Cydia, but when it comes to compiling the simplest source file shows the following error: arm-apple-darwin9-g++ -I /var/toolchain/sys/ -c -dynamiclib ExampleHookLibrary.mm -o ExampleHookLibrary.o arm-apple-darwin9-g++: Internal error: Bus error (program cc1objplus) Please submit a full bug report. • what pattern to use for multi-argument method?

  I have a method with the following signature: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) "foo" needs to alter a Sample object, either the first argument or from the second argument it can extract its Sample. For example: foo (Sample sample, Aliquot aliquot) { Sample out = null; if (sample != null) out = sample else out = aliquot.getSample() return out; } But that is so un-elegant, other than reading the API a developer does not know the reference of the first argument overrides the Sample of the second argument. Now, I could change "foo" to foo (SomeMagicalObject bar) where SomeMagicalObject is a tuple for Sample and Aliquot and holds some logic ... etc. But I am wondering, are there some patterns for this question?

• UISplitViewController: how to get toolbar if details controller is UITableView?

  Hi, I checked out Apple's example on how to exchange detail views in the UISplitViewController (http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#samplecode/MultipleDetailViews/Introduction/Intro.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS40009775) and it seems that they put the UIToolbar in every detail controller. Then, if the device is rotated, they hide the toolbar or show it and add a popover button which will show the root controller. I'd like to adopt this pattern to show my root controller in a popover using a button in the toolbar, but unfortunately, my detail controllers are all UITableViewControllers and they do not allow adding other UI elements than a table view. So how do I deal with that? Is there an example around? René

• Why is x86 ugly? aka Why is x86 considered inferior when compared to others?

  Hello, recently I've been reading some SO archives and encountered statements against x86 architecture. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2667256/why-do-we-need-different-cpu-architecture-for-server-mini-mainframe-mixed-cor says "PC architecture is a mess, any OS developer would tell you that." http://stackoverflow.com/questions/82432/is-learning-assembly-language-worth-the-effort says "Realize that the x86 architecture is horrible at best" http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=976577 says "Most colleges teach assembly on something like MIPS because it's much simpler to understand, x86 assembly is really ugly" and many more comments like Compared to most architectures, X86 sucks pretty badly. It's definitely the conventional wisdom that X86 is inferior to MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC x86 is ugly I tried searching but didn't find any reasons. I don't find x86 bad probably because this is the only architecture I'm familiar with. Can someone kindly give me reasons for considering x86 ugly/bad/inferior compared to others.

For me as a .NET developer it would be great to choose and implement Dynamics CRM because of extensibility and perfect integration with .NET environment and well-known tools. All marketing blahbla sounds great but I'd like to know about common DISADVANTAGES, ISSUES concerning this system. The most important is how it is performing in a company with about 150 concurrent and very active users. I heard that is't really slow comparing to competitors system. • Avoiding cookies while requesting static content

  I just did an audit of one of my web application page (built using ASP.Net and running on development server) using Google chrome's developer tool. One particular warning caught my eyes: Serve static content from a cookieless domain (5)! Here is my screen shot (http://yfrog.com/7eauditresultp) as well. I would like to know is it possible to avoid cookies for these kind of requests. I see that there is no cookie requests for javascript files as well. I it possible to avoid cookies in the header for these files as well? and why didn't the browser attach cookies for javascript files and attach for CSS and image? Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome

• Debug IPhone App on 3.1.2 Phone

  Hello, I recently finished my first IPhone app and want to test it on my device now. I registered (and paid) for an Developer Account and managed to install the required certificates. Unfortunately my device is on firmware 3.1.2 (which I don't want to upgrade). My SDK only shows 3.1.3 as possible Target. As a result it can't be installed on my 3.1.2 device. Where can I set/change to target platform ? Otherwise my App would only run on the newest firmwares, right ? Instead I want to provide it to every User with OS 3.0

• Presenting MVC to Old C++ Spaghetti Coders?

  I wish to present the idea of MVC to a bunch of old C++ spaghetti coders (at my local computer club). One of them that has alot of influence on the rest of the group seems to finally be getting the idea of encapsulation (largely due in part to this website). I was hoping that I could also point him in the right direction by showing him Model View Controller, but I need to do it in a way that makes sense to him, as well as it probably needs to be written in C/C++! I realize that MVC is a very old architectural pattern so it would seem to me that there should be something out there that would do the job. I'm more of a web developer, so I was wondering if anybody out there who is a good C/C++ coder could tell me what it is that made the MVC light switch turn on in your head.

• How do I authenticate a Twitter user and access the API without leaving my iPhone app?

  I'd like to allow users to send out Tweets from my iPhone app. That's all the functionality I need at the moment. From what I know of the Twitter API, there's a standard authentication mechanism, which allows the developer to include the user's name and password in the request string that the application sends to Twitter. This method will no longer be supported come June 30, 2010. Given the timeframe, the better other choice is oAuth. One of the caveats of oAuth is that it requires a UIWebView to pop up within the app to allow the user to enter his or her credentials or a PIN number. None of the Twitter apps on my phone do this, however: Tweetie, TweetDeck and Twitterific. I assume they're using the first authentication method, but it seems like Twitter wouldn't deprecate an API that would hurt the user experience across the board. There must be an alternative method--what am I missing?

  If you do script src="/path/to/nonexistent/file.js" in an HTML file and call that in a browser, and there are no dependencies or resources anywhere else in the HTML file that expect the file or code therein to actually exist, is there anything inherently bad-practice about doing this? Yes, it is an odd question. The rationale is the developer is dealing with a CMS that allows custom (self-contained) javascript files to be provided in certain circumstances. The problem is the CMS is not very flexible when it comes to creating conditional includes for javascript. Therefore it is easier to just make references to the self-contained js files regardless of whether they are actually at the specified path. Since no errors are displayed to the user, should this practice be considered a viable option?

• NHibernate Lazy="Extra"

  Is there a good explanation out there on what exactly lazy="extra" is capable of? All the posts I've seen all just repeat the fact that it turns references to MyObject.ItsCollection.Count into select count(*) queries (assuming they're not loaded already). I'd like to know if it's capable of more robust things, like turning MyObject.ItsCollection.Any(o => o.Whatever == 5) into a SELECT ...EXISTS query. Section 18.1 of the docs only touches on it. I'm not an NH developer, so I can't really experiment with it and watch SQL Profiler without doing a bit of work getting everything set up; I'm just looking for some sort of reference describing what this feature is capable of. • Registry corrupted for testing?

  Hi. Forgive my ignorance. I'm a lowly LAMP stack developer and this is my first post for "c++". We had an Internet Explorer add-on commissioned but then lost support. Allegedly each version has to be have been tested "on a fresh computer since old add-ons could have cause registry errors." I'm not familiar with IE add-on development (or c++ dev). Is this common? Can't one simply reverse registry errors? How to continue testing iterations on one machine? Thanks!

  My audio clips sound perfect when I upload them to the iPhone via iTunes. And I am pretty sure it is because the iPod has a maximum playback level, so the audio doesn't sound overdriven. In my app, I include the same audio files, and when I play them [myAudio play]; the levels are so high that the audio becomes indiscernible. I found in the library http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/AVFoundation/Reference/AVAudioPlayerClassReference/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40008067-CH1-SW2 that it says that you can "Control relative playback level for each sound you are playing" but I've been searching this issue out for hours and I haven't gotten anywhere. Any help would be wonderful!

• Checkstyle for C#?

  I'm looking to find something along the lines of Checkstyle for Visual Studio. I've recently started a new gig doing .NET work and realized that coding standards here are a bit lacking. While I'm still a young guy and far from the most experienced developer I'm trying to lead by example and get things going in the right direction. I loved the ability to use Checkstyle with Eclipse and examine code before reviews so I'd like to do the same thing with Visual Studio. Anyone have any good suggestions? Another thing I'd be somewhat interested in is a plug-in for SVN that disallows check-in until the main coding standards are met. I do not want people checking in busted code that's going to wind up in a code review. Any suggestions at this point would be great.

There are a few different 3rd party code frameworks that include calendar controls, but most of them have a lot of functionality I don't need, plus most of them lack sufficient documentation on how to use them and I'm not a proficient enough iPhone developer figure it out using just the code. So I'm going to attempt to build my own and I was hoping you could provide me with some high-level direction to get started. At a high level, how could I build a simple, calendar control that doesn't do much more than display a calendar (month view, with the current date highlighted) and allows the user to selected a date? • Connecting PC via Bluetooth SNP

  Hi, I have a widcomm example BluChat "WIDCOMM SDK RFComm Service" running on my PC with an USB dongle (BT-2400P). I would like to connect this chat from my HTC Desire. So I stared with the Java example http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html. This is also using BT RFComm. If I'm using my HTC as a server it work's fine, but I would like to use my PC as a server. Then .connect() comes back with "Service Discovery Failure". I have modified the UUID string in the Java example to match the PC-application mmSocket = mmDevice.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(UUID.fromString("5fc2a42e-144e-4bb5-b43f-4e61711d1c32")); mmSocket.connect(); What is missing?   I am trying to execute following PL/SQL script in SQL Developer. The loop should return count of nulls but somehow everytime it is returning 0. set serveroutput on DECLARE --v_count number; v_count_null number; BEGIN execute immediate 'select count(*) from SP_MOSAIX' into v_count; FOR i in (select column_name from all_tab_COLUMNS where table_name = 'SP_MOSAIX') LOOP select count(*) into v_count_null from SP_MOSAIX where i.column_name IS NULL ; dbms_output.put_line(v_count_null); END LOOP; END; So when I run this, following output is what i get: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 But if I manually execute the query subsituting column_name I get the result. select count(*) into v_count_null from SP_MOSAIX where i.column_name IS NULL; Can anybody help on this?

  Basically, DAL (Data Access Layer) should provide simple CRUD (Create/Read/Update/Delete) methods but I always have a temptation to create more sophisticated methods in order to minimize database access roundtrips from Business Logic Layer. What do you think about following extensions to CRUD (most of them are OK I suppose): Read: GetById, GetByName, GetPaged, GetByFilter... e.t.c. methods Create: GetOrCreate methods (model entity is returned from DB or created if not found and returned), Create(lots-of-relations) instead of Create and multiple AssignTo methods calls Update: Merge methods (entities list are updated, created and deleted in one call) Delete: Delete(bool children) - optional children delete, Cleanup methods Where do you usually implement Entity Cache capabilities? DAL or BLL? (My choice is BLL, but I have seen DAL implementations also) Where is the boundary when you decide: this operation is too specific so I should implement it in Business Logic Layer as DAL multiple calls? I often found insufficient BLL operations that were implemented in dozen database roundtrips because developer was afraid to create a bit more sophisticated DAL. Thank you in advance!

But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. I'm aware there are web application projects and web site model, and web site model is basically just a "directory". But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

I have a situation where I have a text file with 1100 lines of a search result with each line containing a file path and a stored procedure associated with that file. Each line has a structure like the one below: abc\def\ghi\***.cs(40): jkl=******.*****.******, "proc_pqrst", parms); Where abc\def\ghi\***.cs is file path of the file ***.cs. The stored procedure names begin with proc_. I have to extract the ***.cs and the corresponding stored procedure name begining with proc_ and write them to a .xls file. Can some body help me in writing the parsing program to do this? Also can I get a detailed outline on where should I write the code for c# and where should I compile it? This could be a great help as I don't have any knowledge of C#. Thank you, BK.

• Automatic VM deployment

  I have an idea to streamline deployments of prototypes within our team using VMs. The idea would be that a developer would be able to deploy their artifacts to Maven, then use a Web interface to pull them onto a development VM for integration/regression testing. They would then be able to to push those artifacts to a reference system, and finally onto production. I'm currently thinking of doing this myself using the vSphere Java API ( http://vijava.sourceforge.net/ ), and some simple scripting to grab artifacts from the Maven repository, configuration from SVN, and then start up a JBoss server. It feels like the kind of thing that may already be available though, has anyone heard of something similar?

  I saw this post: "Typos… Just use option strict and explicit please.. during one software development project, which I was on as a consultant, they were getting ridiculous amounts of errors everywhere… turned out the developer couldn’t spell and would declare variables with incorrect spelling.. no big deal, until you use the correct spelling when you’re assigning a value to it… and you had option explicit off. Ouch to them…" what is an option strict and explicit anyway? I have googled it up but can't get the idea (because mostly it's Visual Basic, I'm doing PHP)
