• install android sdk on kubuntu

  I'm trying to follow the instructions for installing the android sdk found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/adding-packages.html After i've unpackaged and i run the android program under tools, I don't get all the options that I'm supposed to. The only 2 folders that show up are tools, and extras. Under tools, it only shows the "Android SDK Tools" with the status "Installed". Under the "extas" folder, I have nothing. I've made sure that my http: proxy settings are correct. And I've checked the logs. there are no errors. According to the android developer site, I'm supposed to install the SDK platform tools. has anyone tried this on ubuntu? I also checked and saw others were instructed to do an apt-get install ia32-libs but it failed for me. Besides which, I am running the 32bit os... so I don't think i would need to install that... ?? I've also tried following the instructions found here: http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/showthread.php/772 But... • What kinds of issues can one expect when changing a domain names registar? (3 questions)

  Assuming that there are no 'unusual' items that come up, what kind of disruptions can one expect when moving a domain between registrars? I understand some of the below may vary over registrars. But assuming both ends are large proficient registrars: a) Will the NS settings be mirrored? We use a dedicated dns service provider so we are not using the originating registrars name servers. All that we are concerned about is that the existing NS values are mirrored at the target registrar. b) Are incoming domain transfers automated on the target registrar end? Eg: If we begin the transfer process during business hours at the source registrar, will someone have to manually approve the inbound transfer (most likely during their business hours) at the target registrar? c) Is the domain ever 'in limbo'? At any time in the process is there ever a time when the NS values for the domain are not populated (as they were prior to initiating the transfer) OR one does not have access to populate them (at the target registrar)? • Compiz: How can I pin osd-lyrics to the Desktop?

  Hey ya, I have certain applications pinned to my desktop. such as Rainlendar (1), which offers this option in the settings window conky (2), with "own_window_type normal" in my ~/.conkyrc Rhythmbox's Desktop Cover Art plugin (3), a python plugin sticked to the desktop. They all hide nicely below all other Windows. I set Compiz to not minimize them on "show desktop" command using "window rules". I also use [osd-lyrics][1] to display music lyrics. It's default behaviour is to stick always on top, which is irritating sometimes and, in my case, looks rather fugly. (4) See screenshot at: http://i.imgur.com/ie16K.jpg Now how can I tell Compiz to pin the osd-lyrics bar to the desktop below all other windows and not minimize it? I tried all sorts of window rules and exceptions, e.g. using "class=osd-lyrics", "title=osd-lyrics" but the OSD doesn't seem to match any of these. Any ideas? • How to connect ethernet on ubuntu (with auto-detection by Ubuntu)

  Do I need to post another thread for the same? If so, sorry. Yes, I saw that it's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with ethernet, and the exact same problem, that is no internet even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to express my issue. English is not my mother tongue. I'm a total beginner with ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. For 2 weeks, I've kept reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that as a beginner, I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files (eg: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm confused between putting figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem?? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1. I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number? no clue again) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

• Wired connection to windows ISC stopped working

  I have had my Linux box connected to the internet through a Windows computer by wiring them together with a cat5 cable then the Windows is connected wireless to a router. This setup has worked since I got the Linux box but just yesterday stopped working. The changes that occurred were: I changed networking so that I was connecting the Linux box and Windows computer through a second router so during that time the Linux box went through a router to connect to the Windows computer that was still connected wireless to the first router. The Internet didn't work on the Linux box at the time they second router was involved when I removed it and directly connected the Linux box and Windows the Internet worked again. Another thing that changed was that I had disconnected my Windows computer from all network connections and deleted them to make my Ethernet work better. Also at that time my dad had I connect the Windows to a third router and changed some settings in it. After reconnecting this time the connection between the router and the windows would not establish. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is I would greatly appreciate it!

• Awesome and LXDE desktop managers messed up KDE

  I saw a desktop manager named "Awesome" earlier on Google+, and thought I'd give it a try. In short, I didn't like it, but it got me wondering what other desktops were like, which I hadn't tried. The first one to come to mind was LXDE. I installed that, and tried it. I wasn't a big fan, so I just went to log back into KDE. Only, when I log in, everything is screwy. My theme is weird (although, according to system settings, it is still the same). All the categories and application short cuts in the KMenu are gone, except my favorites, which are now renamed with the "short name", it seems. I know these things are global resources, so it is very likely that one of these Window Managers screwed it up, but I need it fixed. Actually, it seems that after restarting the theme problem fixed itself, but the KMenu items disappearing is still a problem. Does anyone know where these items are stored? (I know they are are just .desktop files somewhere, IIRC, but I don't remember where they are usually stored so I can see if they are still there). I'm hoping it's just a matter of a broken link or something somewhere, not deleted shortcuts... :/ In summary: Any ideas on what caused this? Do you know how to fix the KMenu, or at least where the .desktop shortcuts are stored for the KMenu so I can see if they still exist (crosses fingers).

• Creating a 2D perspective in 3D game

  I'm new to XNA and 3D game development in general. I'm creating a puzzle game kind of similar to tetris, built with blocks. I decided to build the game in 3D since I can do some cool animations and transitions when using 3D blocks with physics etc. However, I really do want the game to look "2D". My blocks are made up of 3D models, but I don't want that to be visible when they're not animating. I have followed some XNA tutorials and set up my scene like this: this.view = Matrix.CreateLookAt(cameraPosition, Vector3.Zero, Vector3.Up); this.aspectRatio = graphics.GraphicsDevice.Viewport.AspectRatio; this.projection = Matrix.CreatePerspectiveFieldOfView( MathHelper.ToRadians(45.0f), aspectRatio, 1.0f, 10000.0f); ... and it gives me a very 3D-ish look. For example, the blocks in the center of the screen looks exactly how I want them, but closer to the edges of the screen I can see the rotation and sides of them. My guess is that I'm not after a perspective field of view, but any help on which field of view/settings to use to get a "flat" look when the blocks aren't rotated would be great!

• Second Monitor Detected, but not receiving a signal after upgrading to 12.04

  After I upgraded to 12.04, my second monitor is detected (in display settings), but will not power on. I have scoured the Internet and forums for a solution and I can't find anything. I have found a couple people with the same problem, but never a solution for it. I am no expert, but I'm certainly not a noob. My computer uses AMD Radeon 6250 graphics, but I do NOT want to use the proprietary graphics drivers. They refuse to work properly with my second monitor (they ATI drivers will only mirror screens, and I've done everything to try to fix it, and I DON't want mirrored screens) Not to mention that the default open-source video drivers seem to work much better than the proprietary anyway! Again, Ubuntu's default video drivers work fine, and they even DETECT the second monitor (Dell 19'). I can drag stuff off the screen and put it on the 'space' of the second monitor and even a screen-shot shows that there are two monitors active; but the monitor is OFF. It will not power on. It goes into 'power-save' mode because it is not receiving a signal. For some reason it is not getting the signal to power on, even though Ubuntu thinks the monitor is working properly. I had this working fine on my Sony VAIO yesterday (with Radeon graphics/default Ubuntu video drivers). I upgraded to a Samsung Series 3 and now I have this issue. I can't for the life of me figure out why the monitor is connected, detected and I have screen space for the monitor, but the screen won't turn on! • Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.

• Bluetooth mouse no longer paired after resuming from suspend since upgrading to 13.10

  Since upgrading to 13.10 from 13.04 my mouse no longer connects via bluetooth. In settings it states that the mouse is not paired. Restarting bluetooth with sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart does not help. Restarting the computer does fix the problem if bluetooth is restarted also with the previously mentioned command, but this is not ideal. The mouse worked fine prior to updating to 13.10. The computer is a ThinkPad X230 with a Broadcom 'BCM20702A0' bluetooth module (I think). • Computer becomes unreachable on lan after some time

  I work on my laptop and ssh into my desktop. I use a lot of key based authentication for many servers for work but recently I couldn't login because ssh would pick up and try all the keys and it stops trying before ultimately falling back to password based login. So right now I am using this command: ssh -X -o PubkeyAuthentication=no [email protected] #deskto The issue is after sometime the desktop would just become unreachable from laptop. I won't be able to open its localhost through IP and today I tried ping'in it and found a weird thing. Instead of 192.168.1.4, it tries to ping 192.168.1.3 which I am sure is the root cause as it just can't reach 192.168.1.4 when its actually trying for 192.168.1.3 Ping command output: ashfame@ashfame-xps:~$ ping 192.168.1.4 PING 192.168.1.4 (192.168.1.4) 56(84) bytes of data. P.S. - Laptop runs Ubuntu 12.04 & Desktop runs Ubuntu 11.10 Laptop is connected through wifi to router and Desktop is connected through LAN to router. Update: Even after setting up static IP leases in router settings, I again ran into this issue.

• External TV only allows 640x480 using VGA cable

  I have Ubuntu precise installed on a MacBook Pro. When connecting to an external television using a VGA style cable the highest resolution available seems to be 640x480. I'm using the proprietary NVIDEA Accelerated Graphics Driver (version current) and attempting to setup the TV using the nvidea-settings tool. I know all the equipment supports higher resolutions because of the following: Prior to rebuilding my machine with precise, the same TV, cabel & adapter gave higher resolutions The same machine & TV when used with a HDMI cable allows higher resolutions Windows laptops with the same cable & TV are able to achieve higher resolutions I'm not sure what to look for next, there are some similar FAQ questions but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the areas involved to know if these are my issue or are safe to try. Specifically: colord problem & my monitor resolution 640*480 with no other options! - is the closest, but as I'm having no problems with the main laptop monitor I'm not sure the described symptoms apply. I can't work out from the answer or Bumblebee site how to determine if nvidia optimus applies to my laptop. Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option? - suggests configuring X by hand, but doesn't entirely match the symptoms I'm seeing

• Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

  I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

• Draw contour around object in Opengl

  I need to draw contour around 2d objects in 3d space. I tried drawing lines around object(+points to fill the gap), but due to line width, some part of it(~50%) was covering object. I tried to use stencil buffer, to eliminate this problem, but I got sth like this(contour is green): http://goo.gl/OI5uc (sorry I can't post images, due to my reputation) You can see(where arrow points), that some parts of line are behind object, and some are above. This changes when I move camera, but always there is some part, that is covering it. • Can the "Documents" standard folder be rescued and how?

  Anyone who likes their Documents folder to contain only things they place there knows that the standard Documents folder is completely unsuitable for this task. Every program seems to want to put its settings, data, or something equally irrelevant into the Documents folder, despite the fact that there are folders specifically for this job. So that this doesn't sound empty, take my personal "Documents" folder as an example. I don't ever use it, in that I never, under any circumstances, save anything into this folder myself. And yet, it contains 46 folders and 3 files at the top level, for a total of 800 files in 500 folders. That's 190 MB of "documents" I didn't create. Obviously any actual documents would immediately get lost in this mess. My question is: can anything be done to improve the situation sufficiently to make "Documents" useful again, say over the next 5 years? Can programmers be somehow educated en-masse not to use it as a dumping ground? Could the OS start reporting some "fake" location hidden under AppData through the existing APIs, while only allowing Explorer and the various Open/Save dialogs to know where the "real" Documents folder resides? Or are any attempts completely futile or even unnecessary?

• Ubuntu 11.10 loads from live usb fine, but boots to black screen from harddrive. Why?

  A few days ago I had a hard drive failure, which was running Windows XP (32-bit) just fine. The second hard drive in my computer held a few unimportant files, so I formatted it in the Ubuntu setup and installed 11.10 without a hitch. I had been using it for about a week, but decided to install Windows 7 (64-bit) in order to utilize Networking with my home server (running Windows Server 2000). My system is 64-bit based, and thus I had no problems installing other than a basic RAM error that required me to remove my RAM down to a single stick. I played with the settings in Windows 7 for around an hour before I shut down. After reinstalling the RAM, Windows 7 would not boot. In this, I then assumed that something about my system was rejecting Win7 and I reinstalled Ubuntu. However, now Ubuntu (11.10) boots into black screen, and I've already attempted activating the grub menu with the shift key, and following steps listed here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen but nothing seems to work. I've reinstalled twice now, with the same result each time. Now, the very odd part about this whole scenario is that the USB I installed from has no problems booting as a live USB. This puzzles me greatly, because the hard drive boots straight to black screen and the live USB loads normally. At this point, my only theory is that the boot sector of the hard disk was somehow corrupted with Win7, and that Ubuntu was unable to completely write through. I used Darik's Boot n Nuke to wipe the drive, but was met with an error, this also puzzles me because the hard disk has no promblems reading or writing. Any suggestions/comments are appreciated. If you have a theory, I will be more than happy to oblige. Additional information: Intel Core2 Duo e6400 2.13GHz nVidia GeForce 7-series (7900 GS) 4 GB DDR2 333MHz (2x 2GB) Dell XPS 410 BIOS Revision 2.5.3

• How do I uninstall GRUB?

  A hard drive that I use only for data storage still has GRUB from past Ubuntu installations. How can I remove GRUB from it without harming the rest of the drive's data? Background I occasionally move the data drive between computers with various boot order configurations, so I would like it to be non-bootable in order to avoid having to accommodate it in each computer's BIOS settings. When I power on a computer while only the data drive is attached, the following appears: error: no such device: fdf38dd4-9e9d-479d-b830-2a6989958503. grub rescue> I can confirm from old backups of /etc/fstab that this was the UUID of a root partition that I recently reformatted and which no longer exists. Here's the the data drive's partition table and raw master boot record. Please note that I'm not interested in workarounds that don't answer my primary question. I can think of several ways to work around this issue, but it bothers me on principle that I don't know how to directly resolve it. Every installation procedure should have a counterpart uninstallation procedure.

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. • How to get Nvidia graphics working on Sony Z laptop?

  I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working? • GUI based backup utility [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Comparison of backup tools I have read favorable reviews for 'Back In Time' for the purpose stated above. Still I am posting this question as I have some demands in my mind. Few years back I was using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery by IBM on my Lenovo PC under Windows. That provided me nice features like compressed backups, boot time options - OS Repair, Restore entire OS, restore entire system to an older date, restore individual files etc. Out of these the feature I liked the most was compressed backups. Similar features are available in software like Norton Ghost too. In Back In Time I was surprised to see that the snapshot takes up same amount of space as that of the original contents, no compression at all. Furthermore, I was not able to find options to change the compression ratio etc. under settings. According to me compression of backups is a must have feature. Therefore, can anyone suggest me any other utility which can serve the purpose. I insist on GUI based tool since I don't want to mess up with backups!

• xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • 12.10 Wireless networking

  I downloaded ubuntu 12.10 using WUBI and cannot connect to the internet. I removed it and downloaded ubuntu 12.04 still cannot connect. This I assume rules out the program being the problem. I reinstalled 12.10. When loaded I get the same message W/red (x) stating Internet not connected. I went to the Settings drop down box and it does not reveal the network list but (enable networking has a ck mark). Am running a HP Laptop with a w/7/64 OS that has a kill switch that indicates (orangeno connection) I downloaded 12.10 on my desktop (on the same network) and everything OK. I tried to follow the instructions in the help menu but got lost and confused . Sincerely Dan Additional Info per request Broadcom 802.11b/g Wlan Internal pc [hp laptop] P.S. I've been out of town for about a month. • Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first.
