  • Performing dynamic sorts on EF4 data

    I'm attempting to perform dynamic sorting of data that I'm putting into grids into our MVC UI. Since MVC is abstracted from everything else via WCF, I've created a couple utility classes and extensions to help with this. The two most important things (slightly simplified) are as follows: public static IQueryable<T> ApplySortOptions<T, TModel, TProperty>(this IQueryable<T> collection, IEnumerable<ISortOption<TModel, TProperty>> sortOptions) where TModel : class { var sortedSortOptions = (from o in sortOptions orderby o.Priority ascending select o).ToList(); var results = collection; foreach (var option in sortedSortOptions) { var currentOption = option; var propertyName = currentOption.Property.MemberWithoutInstance(); var isAscending = currentOption.IsAscending; if (isAscending) { results = from r in results orderby propertyName ascending select r; } else { results = from r in results orderby propertyName descending select r; } } return results; } public interface ISortOption<TModel, TProperty> where TModel : class { Expression<Func<TModel, TProperty>> Property { get; set; } bool IsAscending { get; set; } int Priority { get; set; } } I've not given you the implementation for MemberWithoutInstance() but just trust me in that it returns the name of the property as a string. :-) Following is an example of how I would consume this (using a non-interesting, basic implementation of ISortOption<TModel, TProperty>): var query = from b in CurrentContext.Businesses select b; var sortOptions = new List<ISortOption<Business, object>> { new SortOption<Business, object> { Property = (x => x.Name), IsAscending = true, Priority = 0 } }; var results = query.ApplySortOptions(sortOptions); As I discovered with this question, the problem is specific to my orderby propertyName ascending and orderby propertyName descending lines (everything else works great as far as I can tell). How can I do this in a dynamic/generic way that works properly?

    Hi, i'm developing an enterprise application using asp.net mvc, wf-wcf services and normal wcf. I want use a unique point of view of unmanaged exception and my problem is integrate wf-wcf services with ELMAH. The problem is that in wf-wcf i can't decorate di class with the elmah attribute so i make that using web.config if is possible. Someone can help me?   • How would you organize a large complex web application (see basic example)?

    How do you usually organize complex web applications that are extremely rich on the client side. I have created a contrived example to indicate the kind of mess it's easy to get into if things are not managed well for big apps. Feel free to modify/extend this example as you wish - http://jsfiddle.net/NHyLC/1/ The example basically mirrors part of the comment posting on SO, and follows the following rules: Must have 15 characters minimum, after multiple spaces are trimmed out to one. If Add Comment is clicked, but the size is less than 15 after removing multiple spaces, then show a popup with the error. Indicate amount of characters remaining and summarize with color coding. Gray indicates a small comment, brown indicates a medium comment, orange a large comment, and red a comment overflow. One comment can only be submitted every 15 seconds. If comment is submitted too soon, show a popup with appropriate error message. A couple of issues I noticed with this example. This should ideally be a widget or some sort of packaged functionality. Things like a comment per 15 seconds, and minimum 15 character comment belong to some application wide policies rather than being embedded inside each widget. Too many hard-coded values. No code organization. Model, Views, Controllers are all bundled together. Not that MVC is the only approach for organizing rich client side web applications, but there is none in this example. How would you go about cleaning this up? Applying a little MVC/MVP along the way?   • Is ASP.Net State Server an elegant solution?

    We have an ASP.Net MVC project that will start with a single web server but likely soon scale into a small web farm. As ASP.Net Authentication stores a UserID, and data caching may also be useful, we would likely need to make the jump to state server fairly soon. I'd like to hear from others how State Server has been to work with and how it scales from a performance perspective. Alternateively, we could architect it as completely stateless by not using data caching and tracking sessions with an encrypted cookie.

  • Why am I getting a TypeLoadException when defining a custom profile?

    I'm writing a .NET command-line application that will migrate users from an existing database into aspnetdb. To simplify the user-specific settings, I'm using the profile class that Joel Spolsky wrote about here. It works great in the ASP.NET MVC website, but for some reason it's throwing a TypeLoadException when being used from this new application. I'm not sure why the framework is trying to load the new class from System.Web.

    what is the preferred practice when linq2sql using (in asp.net mvc applications): to create "singleton" for DataContext like: partial class db { static db _db = new db(global::data.Properties.Settings.Default.nanocrmConnectionString, new AttributeMappingSource()); public static db GetInstance() { return _db; } } or to retrieve new instance when it needed within using: using (db _db = new db()) { ... } the usage of using brings some limitations on code. so I prefer to use singleton one. is it weird practice?
