• Windows Home Server backup recovery missing driver for USB Device

  I'm doing a backup recovery of a Windows 7 PC from the backup on Windows Home Server. I've done this before and am accustomed to the prompt to load drivers for devices such as the NIC from a USB flash drive, which I have all loaded up with the drivers from the special folder in the WHS backup repository for this PC. My problem on this PC is that one of the drivers the recovery CD complains is missing is "USB Device", and it fails to find the drivers when I click the button to scan for and install drivers. So it seems it can't access the USB flash drive to load the other drivers. Any suggestions? I think my next step is to pull a DVD drive from another system and plug it in with a CD burned with the device drivers.

• A Cautionary Tale About Multi-Source JNDI Configuration

  Here's a bit of fun with WebLogic JDBC configurations.  I ran into this issue after reading that p13nDataSource and cgDataSource-NonXA should not be configured as multi-source. There were some issues changing them to use the basic JDBC connection string and when rolling back to the bad configuration the server went "Boom".  Since one purpose behind this blog is to share lessons learned, I just had to post this. If you write your descriptors manually (as opposed to generating them using the WLS console) and put a comma-separated list of JNDI addresses like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool,contentDataSource, contentVersioningDataSource,portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0,portalDataSource-rac1</data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params> so long as the first address resolves, it will still work. Sort of.  If you call this connection to do an update, only one node of the RAC instance is updated. Other wonderful side-effects include the server refusing to start sometimes. • Do you know the minimum builds to create on any branch?

  You should always have three builds on your team project. These should be setup and tested using an empty solution before you write any code at all. Figure: Three builds named in the format [TeamProject].[AreaPath]_[Branch].[Gate|CI|Nightly] for every branch.   These builds should use the same XAML build workflow; however you may set them up to run a different set of tests depending on the time it takes to run a full build. Gate – Only needs to run the smallest set of tests, but should run most if not all of the Unit Test. This is run before developers are allowed to check-in CI – This should run all Unit Tests and all of the automated UI tests. It is run after a developer check-in. Nightly – The Nightly build should run all of the Unit Tests, all of the Automated UI tests and all of the Load and Performance tests. The nightly build is time consuming and will run but once a night. Packaging of your Product for testing the next day may be done at this stage as well. Figure: You can control what tests are run and what data is collected while they are running. Note: We do not run all the tests every time because of the time consuming nature of running some tests, but ALL tests should be run overnight. • Domain forwarding to a IE "trusted site" opens a blank page

  My employer, a University, regularly hosts conferences and other events. While websites for these sites are hosted on our domain, they frequently request customized .com urls. We then forward these domains to the specific site. Recently, we discovered a problem, where a page will not load if the following conditions are met(using a current example): website is created on our CMS for a conference http://continue.weber.edu/nulc a domain is created http://www.nulc2012.com and forwarded to http://continue.weber.edu/nulc The user enters http://www.nulc2012.com into their address bar using IE7 or IE8 The user has *.weber.edu listed as a "trusted site" in IE security settings (the case for nearly all on-campus computers) When this happens, their browser will correctly transfer to the page http://continue.weber.edu/nulc/index.php, however the page is blank, returning only: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" http-equiv=Content-Type></HEAD> <BODY></BODY></HTML> Is there any know solution to this problem? • Flattening PDF transparency

  I have a PDF, made with Inkscape, that uses transparent colors. This image shall be used in a LaTeX document. While preserving the transparency is nice for editing, it can be a problem for printing. Printing usually involves PDF to PS conversion. Since Postscript does not support transparency, this requires either flatting, i.e. creating a vector graphic that works without transparency or rastering, i.e. rendering a bitmap image. When a PDF document containing such a figure is printed (or converted to PS) using Evince (or Cairo or Ghostscript), the whole page gets rendered as a bitmap, rendering fonts ugly (different from other pages). (Adobe Acrobat handles such PDFs well.) Unfortunately, converting the PDF figures to EPS (before including them with LaTeX) doesn't help much, because both pdftops and pdf2ps (again, Cairo or Ghostscript) rasterize the image, i.e. render a bitmap (saved as EPS). (This is slightly better, because it doesn't affect the whole page, but I'd still prefer a vector graphics.) How can I flatten transparency with Inkscape or other software on Linux?

• RAM caching causes severe performance drops

  I have read plenty of threads on memory caching and the standard response of "large cache is good, it shouldn't effect performance", "the kernel knows best". I have recently upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and changed from VirtualBox to VMware Workstation and the performance differences are severe (I suspect it is because of the latter). When I am running my virtual machine the system load monitor graph shows less than 50% memory usage generally. System load indicator is showing me that the rest of my RAM is used in the cache all the time. Plain and simple this is the comparison: BEFORE Cache was very sparingly used, pretty much none of my memory usage was the cache Swappiness was 0 (caused my memory to be used first, then swap only if needed) Performance was quite good and logical RAM was used fully first, caching was minimal. I could run enough software to utilize my full 4GB of RAM without any performance degradation whatsoever Swap space was then used as needed which was obviously slower (I am on a HDD) but was still usable when the current program was loaded into memory AFTER Cache is used to fill the full 4GB as soon as my virtual machine is run Swappiness is 0 (same behaviour as before but cache uses full memory straight away) Performance is terrible and unusable while running Ubuntu software Basic things like changing windows takes 2 minutes + Changing screens happens frame by frame over sometimes up to 5 minutes Cannot run an IDE and VM like I could with ease before So basically, any suggestions on how to take my performance back to how it was before while keeping my current setup? My suspicion is VMWare is the problem, but how do I see what is tied to the use of the cache? Surely there is a way to control this behaviour in software as polished as VMware? Thanks EDIT: Could also be important to note that the behaviour differs depending on whether VMware is open or closed. If VMware is open, then the ram will lock at like 50% and 50% cache and go into the complete lock up mentioned above. Contrastingly, if VMware is closed (after being open), then the RAM will continue to rise as it needs / cache will stay as the complete remaining memory and there is no noticeable performance degradation.

• Very Large number of connections in TIME_WAIT state; Server is slow, ipconntrac

  I have a nginx server with load balancing and reverse proxy. Right now its behing another nginx but very soon I plan to make it front, where it will receive TCP connections from clients directly at a rate of 500req/second I am having some big troubles with the server. It surely isnt great. Can you help me understand whats going on and how can I fix it. This is my live server and I am sure its in a bad shape right now. Any document or commands to fix this, or settings I should make to make this better and reduce time wait and fin_wait1/2 better would be awesome.

• How to disable "N" Wireless Mode RTL8192 (Thinkpad Edge 15 Core i5) in natty

  I've seen many owners of thinkpad edges which are supossed to be linux-friendly having problems with wireless adapter. I've found several links inside askubuntu and in ubuntuforums which have a lot of work-arounds for those problems, mine seems to be wierd though. I use my laptop on both my office and at home. At home I have a router which is A/B/G and here at home the wireless connection works just fine, using a WEP key. But in work I have a B/G/N wireless router and it doesn't work, my guess is that this adapter works with N modes but somehow this is buggy in the bundled driver in natty. I've tried to disable the "N" mode in the router but that didn't work. Later I went to realtek website, downloaded their driver and compiled myself, kinda seems to work most of the time but sometimes some websites keep trying to load or load just parts of it and images start to look like their links are broken and so on, much like what you get when you were loading a page and suddenly the connection is lost. This problem, as I said, is only using the realtek driver from their website. Dmesg gives me this a lot of these: [ 5869.049454] rtl8192se_update_ratr_table: ratr_index=0 ratr_table=0x00000ff5 [ 5879.240563] DHCP pkt src port:68, dest port:67!! So I thougth I might as well switch back to the original driver which seems to work just fine on A/B/G wireless networks but not on N networks so if anybody knows how to disable that mode from within the driver please let us know :) Thanks in advance! PS: I do found a link to a similar question and it was answered but let me remind you I'm NOT using the intel version of wireless for my thinkpad but the realtek (RTL8192SvB)

• ATI Catalyst driver 12.8 is not using hardware acceleration on Precise

  I've been using Ubuntu and ATI Catalyst for years. On my clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 I've noticed that Catalyst 12.6 and then 12.8 are not actually using my HD5750 GPU for hardware acceleration - high CPU usage, zero GPU load. Everything installed correctly with no hassles, fglrxinfo and vainfo are correct as per this HowTo for Precise. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 with Catalyst 12.6 installation on the same hardware which does use the GPU - low CPU usage, high GPU load when transcodeing video files or playing video content. The VA-API drivers are not installed on the 10.04 build. They are not mentioned in this HowTo for Lucid. fgl_glxgears frame rates on Precise are a fifth of the rates on Lucid. • How to spread XML Sitemaps over several webservers behind AWS loadbalancer?

  We have a web portal with almost a million products and way more other urls. I wrote a script that checks database. If there is a new url needed or an old one update, this script will update/create the XML Sitemaps. But we have several servers behind the load balancer at our rented AWS space. Further this script checks database for each url if there was an update so that it updates the appropriate xml file too. My question is how to spread those XML Sitemaps over all webservers behind this AWS load balancer? Our approaches/ideas: we could just generate them on one server with a cron job and copy them to the other servers, but this could be difficult because of automatic raising numbers of servers and so on. we put them on our S3 - but this one is not avaible thru our domain, so I guess google will have a problem with it I let my script run on every webserver but change it in a way that it will generate each time all xml files if they do not exist. But then I would have conflicts with updated URLs in my database, where I saved timestamp of last changed value of every url Is there another - better - solution that I do not know? Are there any special services by amazon for such cases?

• Rainmeter customization issues, pretty basic

  I'll admit it; I'm new to using Rainmeter. What I want to do is create two panels (one left, the other on the right) that mirror one another. One side I want to work for the Eastern US while the other for the UK. I want to keep digital clocks, the same style etc., on both sides with their respective time zone. On top of this I want to have weather reports for the whole day (Current weather and temp, morning, afternoon, and night) for each location. However, I have not been able to find any skins which allow this. For whatever reason every time I try to load a skin for a clock I can only load it for one clock of that type and I'm having the same issue with the weather skins. Could anyone please tell me what skins I should look at and how to get a mirrored look?

  I have been having problems wrapping my brain around how to properly utilize the modular extension for Codeigniter. From what I understand, modules should be entirely independent of one another so I can work on one module and not have to worry about what module my teammate is working on. I am building a frontend and a backend to my site, and am having confusion about how I should structure my applications. The first part of my question is should I use the app root controllers to run modules, or should users go directly to the modules by urls? • External table and preprocessor for loading LOBs

  I was using the COLUMN TRANSFORMS syntax to load LOBs into Oracle using the Oracle external which is a handy way of doing several stuff - from loading LOBs from the filesystem to having constants as fields. In OWB you can use unbound external tables to define an external table using your own arbitrary access parameters - I blogged a while back on this for doing preprocessing before it was added into OWB 11gR2. For loading LOBs using the COLUMN TRANSFORMS syntax have a read through this post on loading CLOB, BLOB or any LOB, the files to load can be specified as a field that is a filename field, the content of this file will be the LOB data. So using the example from the linked post, you can define the columns; Then define the access parameters - if you go the unbound external table route you can can put whatever you want in here (your external table get out of jail free card); This will let you read the LOB files fromn the filesystem and use the external table in a mapping. Pushing the envelope a little further I then thought about marrying together the preprocessor with the COLUMN TRANSFORMS, this would have let me have a shell script for example as the preprocessor which listed the contents of a directory and let me read the files as LOBs via an external table. Unfortunately that doesn't quote work - there is now a bug/enhancement logged, so one day maybe. So I'm afraid my blog title was a little bit of a teaser....

• Vertex fog producing black artifacts

  I originally posted this question on the XNA forums but got no replies, so maybe someone here can help: I am rendering a textured model using the XNA BasicEffect. When I enable fog, the model outline is still visible as many small black dots when it should be "in the fog". Why is this happening? • You Can&rsquo;t Upload An Empty File To SharePoint 2007 Or SharePoint 2010

  The title of this post is pretty self explanatory, but I thought it worth mentioning since I had never run across this rule until just recently.  A few weeks ago I was testing out a new workflow attached to a SharePoint 2007 document library.  I uploaded various file types to ensure all were handled properly.  One of the files I happened to test with was an empty .txt file to which I got the following error.      As you can see from the error message you aren’t allowed to upload a file that is empty.  Fast forward to this week when I was doing some research for my upcoming SharePoint 2010 beta exams.  I remembered that error I got a few weeks ago and decided to try out with SharePoint 2010 as well.  No surprises I got a similar error. Conclusion     Next time you are uploading files to a SharePoint 2007 or 2010 document library, make sure the file is not empty.  Coincidentally when I tweeted about this issue a few friends replied that they had also found this error recently.  I don’t know the internal reasoning why this is prevented but I assume it has something to do with how the blob for the file is stored in the database.  I assume that this would still be the case even if you had Remote Blob Storage (RBS) configured for your farm, but don’t have access to such a farm to confirm.  If anyone reading this does have access and wants to confirm that would be appreciated, just leave a comment.         -Frog Out

  I'm trying to setup OpenVPN Access Server on a VPS running ubuntu 9.10 for a friend so she can play games from her uni campus. The problem is I keep running into this error when trying to start openvpn. I'm not very experience with linux and I feel in over my head here so any advice is greatly appreciated. --edit-- Just stumbled across this Not sure how I missed it earlier. I believe I need to get modprobe ipt_mark & modprobe ipt_MARK run on the hostnode by my provider. Is this correct and something I should try get done.

• Computer experiencing slowdowns and lockups despite low cpu useage

  my setup i5-2300 nvidia gtx 550 ti 6 gigs ram 600 w ocz modular psu recently reformatted and already experiencing drastic slowdown as soon as windows comes up, including repeated lockups with multiple various programs reporting that they are not responsive, then recovering after 10-30 seconds. ive checked memory and hard drive both of which come out fine. despite my plethura of worthless antiviral software im forced to assume that my illicit downloading practices have lead me into some comp trouble that i cant seem to determine. i have used ccleaner, search and destroy and malware bytes, all of which have found nothing to indicate what is causing this massive slowdown. in addition according to my resource manager my computer is operating at a load of only 30-50 percent CPU useage and 60 ram useage but taking 5-10 seconds to load files and open folders, and repeated lockups of multiple programs, especially firefox which seems to go unresponsive every 2-3 minutes. any help would be appreciated, i used a program called OTL by old timer, but cant make any sense of the results i was given. any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thank you for taking the time to read this i have avast but it didnt even find anything when i had it do a full system scan, so im thinking its clueless(also nortons, avg, and ad-aware). i also have mse but it has yet to complete a full scan it takes so long (i left it on last night but when i woke up my computer had a problem and had to restart). my hard drive has 300 gigs out of 1tb open and i already used hd tune pro, which said my harddrive was fine and its not a ssd. also im a noob at comps and only have the hd that is currently inside the computer in addition im not sure if studdering is the issue im suffering. my problem is that during my typing of these responses firefox has gone "not responsive" at least 5 times, each for times of about 5-10 seconds. when i try to control alt delete to bring up windows task manager it took 20 seconds. essentially its that my computer goes super slow at bringing up anything, or taking any action whatsoever that opens a program or file and has repeated incidents where i cant even click on whatever im trying to do because it locks up. the confusing thing about these incidents is that its right after restarting where there are minimal programs running and the computer and memory load is light.

Apache version: Apache/2.2.9 (Debian) The error message seems cryptic to me, I have AuthzLDAPAuthoritative on so where's the problem. EDIT: LDAP modules are loaded, the problem is not with them being missing. # ls /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/*ldap* /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/authnz_ldap.load /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/ldap.load EDIT2: Solved it by changing funky Require ldap-group cn=CHANGED, cn=CHANGED line with Require valid-user Since AuthzLDAPAuthoritative is on, no other auth methods will be used and valid-user requirement will auth via LDAP. (right? :/)
