• Opera12 browser support for WebGL

  I have enabled - enable webGL by entering Enable WebGL in opera:config by setting the value to 1, and Enable Hardware Acceleration similarly, then restart the browser - Opera 12 on Windows & tried to open - http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/. This gives me an alert saying - Your browser failed to initialize WebGL. Please guide me on - What's going wrong? opera:gpu says : Hardware acceleration Disabled Direct3D 10 Backend not supported Could not load library OpenGL Backend not supported Could not load library But,same thing (http://aleksandarrodic.com/p/jellyfish/) works fine on Chrome! • Preventing ugly hyperlinks in Word-generated PDFs?

  I'm creating a document in Word 2007 on Windows XP, and using the "Save As PDF" add-in. The document contains hyperlinks. When I open that PDF in Preview.app on a Mac (OS X 10.5.8), I see ugly boxes around all the hyperlinks. I've tried editing the PDF in Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 on the Mac, but the boxes don't show up there. If I select a hyperlink anyway with the Link Tool, right-click, and select "Properties..." no properties dialog ever appears. I want the links to be clickable, but I want them to look decent. How can I fix them? I don't have Acrobat for Windows.

• File store: CouchDB vs SQL Server + file system

  I'm exploring different ways of storing user-uploaded files (all are MS Office documents or alikes) on our high load web site. It's currently designed to store documents as files and have a SQL database store all metadata for those files. I'm concerned about growing out of the storage server and SQL server performance when number of documents reaches hundreds of millions. I was reading a lot of good information about CouchDB including its built-in scalability and performance, but I'm not sure how storing files as attachments in CouchDB would compare to storing files on a file system in terms of performance. Anybody used CouchDB clusters for storing LARGE amounts of documents and in high load environment?

• My internet connection slows or dies unexpectedly

  I installed Ubuntu 10.04 once again and I'm having some problems which I had before, but I have no idea how I solved them. On Windows, everything's working fine and I had no problems with this. My problem is that sometimes, when browsing through the internet, webpages just start to load really slow, sometimes it doesn't load anything at all (Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.) and it starts to work after few minutes. My IPv4 settings are automatic (DHCP), and IPv6 settings are Ignored/Disabled. I think my previous problems had something to do with IPv6, but I'm not sure. • rails didnt install correclty, specificly the uninstaller

  ive just installed rails using railsinstaller.org for osx, rails and ruby seem to be working ok (checked by running rails -v and ruby --version). But when it installed i got an error saying that not there were errors and the uninstaller didnt install correctly. Somthing odd i saw was that when i load terminal i get this showing up Last login: Fri Nov 30 13:12:09 on ttys000 unknown5c969d7cc475:~ Sam$ specificly the "unknon5c96..." part im not sure if its related ? I think i might have got the install error as xcode wasnt installed first, for peice of mind id like to unistall it and load it back on, but when i try and run the installer from the application folder it just asks for my password and then dose nothing.. any ideas how i can fix this ?

• Count function on tree structure (non-binary)

  I am implementing a tree Data structure in c# based (largely on Dan Vanderboom's Generic implementation). I am now considering approach on handling a Count property which Dan does not implement. The obvious and easy way would be to use a recursive call which Traverses the tree happily adding up nodes (or iteratively traversing the tree with a Queue and counting nodes if you prefer). It just seems expensive. (I also may want to lazy load some of my nodes down the road). I could maintain a count at the root node. All children would traverse up to and/or hold a reference to the root, and update a internally settable count property on changes. This would push the iteration problem to when ever I want to break off a branch or clear all children below a given node. Generally less expensive, and puts the heavy lifting what I think will be less frequently called functions. Seems a little brute force, and that usually means exception cases I haven't thought of yet, or bugs if you prefer. Does anyone have an example of an implementation which keeps a count for an Unbalanced and/or non-binary tree structure rather than counting on the fly? Don't worry about the lazy load, or language. I am sure I can adjust the example to fit my specific needs. EDIT: I am curious about an example, rather than instructions or discussion. I know this is not technically difficult...

• Ubuntu 64bit Black Screen on Minecraft

  I have tried posting on the forums, but I really need help (I'm a server admin and really don't want to have to switch to Windows just to run Minecraft). Anyhow, I originally was running openjdk6 as I was told that 7 was unstable and was getting periodical lag spikes while walking (at least once every 3 seconds the screen would freeze for a tenth of a second). After that, I attempted to install Sun's Java JDK7 (I couldn't get ahold of 6 without signing up for Oracle's newsletters).   I am trying to pull names from an XML Document using a vbscript. XML Document structure <Aliases> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> <Alias PartyType="DF" CaseID="000000" NameType=""> Name Name</Alias> ... </Aliases> the XML File might have 100 rows with the same name coming from several different CaseID's because for this part of my vbscript I am trying to pull all the different Names from all cases, but here is the issue, I don't want to return duplicates. is there a way to do this with an xPath Expression or should I try to do this with VBScript? EDIT I am pretty sure that I am going to have to do this with VBScript. Would it be Faster and more efficient to solve this issue in VBScript, xPath, or in populating the XML I am retrieving information from ( this might prove more difficult than the other two options ) I am also asking a Similar question on stackoverflow

• new pc..noisy fan

  It's a new build, but it's always had noisy fans. From start to end, they will not stop running. The case is a cooler master which I believe comes with a fan that is not controlled by BIOS (according to technician), so that may be the source of the problem..but my lack of knowledge on the matter prevents me from making a reasonable assessment. • All-on-one-page print view in Plone

  We have a Plone 4 document that is in a hierarchy. At each node there's either a document, or a folder. Folders then have more documents and folders. We want to be able to print the entire hierarchy, which means rendering the whole thing on one page. I see a number of web sites like this one that seem to have something like this. Is it manually done or is there some add-on I can get to make this feature possible?

• Areca 1880ix RAID hangs

  Areca RAID controller ARC-1880ix-12 (firmware 1.50) hangs when on high load. My setup is: Chenbro 3U chassis Intel S5500BC mainboard Xeon 5603 CPU 16GB of RAM 12 Seagate SAS drives ST32000645SS (2 of them as hot spare, 10 as RAID10) Mellanox Infiniband HBA card This server is working as external infiniband storage for Xen VMs. When load is quite big Areca's firmware hangs - it becomes unreachable even from Areca's ethernet adapter. After resetting the server power it returns to normal operation. While Areca is hanged I can confirm that it is powered (ethernet link is active) and Infiniband HBA works Ok. Thanks in advance for any idea or suggestion where the problem might be!

• cleaning up pdftotext font issues

  I'm using pdftotext to make an ASCII version of a PDF document (made with LaTeX), because collaborators prefer a simple document in MS word. The plain text version I see looks good, but upon closer inspection the f character seems to be frequently mis-converted depending on what characters follow. For example, fi and fl often seem to become one special character, which I will try to paste here: ? and ?. What is the best way to clean up the output of pdftotext? I am thinking sed might be the right tool, but am not sure how to detect these special characters.

• Apple TV photo fail

  I just bought the new (2nd gen) Apple TV. Everything works beautifully, except for Photos. I have 25,000 pictures on my computer, which creates 3 issues with Apple TV 1) It takes roughly an HOUR to load my photos, every time! (if I navigate anywhere else, its has to reload all over again next time) 2) It condenses all of my folders-sub-folders-sub-sub-folders into just the top folder. Having only 5 top folders with 5,000 pictures each is pretty much useless. 3) It has an artificial cap of 20,000 pictures, after which it won’t load more. The first two are the big ones, since they pretty much make the product unusable. I have called apple support (they just said “sorry…too bad”), and have checked all the online forums I can. Also it is definitely not a connection issue, as it streams HD Netflix movies with ease. Does anyone else here have this issue, and/or hopefully some solutions?

• How to set specific environment variables for Apache service run on Windows

  I'm facing a problem. I use xampp 1.7.7 on Windows which installs a Apache service. I find that I have to some tweak to have all PHP modules load properly. For example, php_ldap.dll cannot be loaded. It is mysterious why it cannot be loaded until I tried to run httpd.exe from command line, which reveals that libsasl.dll cannot be founded. Actually, there exist D:\xampp\php\libsasl.dll but httpd.exe cannot find it. OK. The best way is to add D:\xampp\php to PATH env-var. Now my question is: How do I set a specific PATH value for that specific Apache service but not system wide. -- because I think it is better not to disturb other processes with that extra PATH value. Is there a general way to do that for a specific Windows service? or, is there a Apache specific way to load extra env-var settings from some specific configuration files?

The problem I am having is that the VM cannot start apache on boot. $ sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 start * Starting web server apache2 * * The apache2 configtest failed. Output of config test was: apache2: Syntax error on line 36 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/authz_default.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_authz_default.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Action 'configtest' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. the system is ubuntu 12, not sure what modifications I have to make to the puppet config to fix the problem.

• script to automatically test if a web site is available

  I'm a lone web developer with my own Centos VPS hosting a few small web sites for my clients. Today I discovered my httpd service had stopped (for no apparent reason - but that's another thread). I restarted it but now I need to find a way that I can be notified by email and/or SMS if it happens again - I don't like it when my client rings me to tell me their web site doesn't work! I know there are probably many different possibilities, including server monitoring software. I think all I really need is a script that I can run as a cron job from my dev host (which is permanently running in my office) that attempts to load a page from my production server and if it doesn't load within say 30 seconds then it sends me an email or SMS. I'm pretty rubbish at shell scripting, hence this question. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, thanks to all you clever sysadmin guys and girls out there :)

• What are my choices for server side sandboxed scripting?

  I'm building a public website where users share data and scripts to run over some data. The scripts are run serverside in some sort of sandbox without other interaction this cycle: my Perl program reads from a database a User made script, adds the data to be processed into the script ( ie: a JSON document) then calls the interpreter, it returns the response( a JSON document or plain text), i save it to the database with my perl script. The script should be able to have some access to built in functions added to the scripting language by myself, but nothing more. So i've stumbled upon node.js as a javascript interpreter, and and hour or so ago with Google's V8(does v8 makes sense for this kind of thing?). CoffeeScript also came to my mind, since it looks nice and it's still Javascript. I think javascript is widespread enough and more "sandboxeable" since it doesn't have OS calls or anything remotely insecure ( i think ). by the way, i'm writing the system on Perl and Php for the front end. To improve the question: I'm choosing Javascript because i think is secure and simple enough to implement with node.js, but what other alternatives are for achieving this kind of task? Lua? Python? I just can't find information on how to run a sandboxed interpreter in a proper way.

• Optimising website IP for location

  From my understanding of SEO, websites are optimised for the current location of their IP address. For example if xxx.xxx.xxx.xx resolves to the UK then you are more likely to get higher rankings in the UK then you are in the USA. However, my query is when you use a CDN you are storing a cached version of your website across multiple servers at strategic locations across the globe to reduce load time in locations that your trying to target. Now if you use a CDN and geo-locate the website URL then it only resolves back to the USA (where our IP address resolves too) but it doesn't say it resolves to any other countries. As far as I know you can have multiple IP address resolving to one domain (from different countries). Do CDN's really help to optimise the location of your website or are they soley meant to optimise load time? Is there a better way to optimise for multiple countries with regards to the resolution of the IP address? Are VPN's as per this post here relevant to this? Any advice would be helpful.

• SEO & Multilingual: would be this a good practise?

  I am currently making a bilingual website and I'd like to get nice SEO results of course. Here's my idea: The internal links would be composed of the "www" subdomain so that people can share links regardless of their language. Anyway, their language is determined by the HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE PHP variable. So, they would see http:// www.site.com/mydocument/123 in their adress bar and never see any links like "http:// fr.site.com/mydocument/123" or "http://en.site.com/mydocument/123" The user can always switch the page's language thanks to links in the footer. The switching language link would be : http:// fr.site.com/mydocument/123 , and clicking on it would change his language session and redirects the user to http:// www.site.com/mydocument/123 In case of a crawling bot: I read that if the HTTP_USER_LANGUAGE variable was missing then it's a crawling bot. So, in that case, we set the defaut language as English. Each page, as I mentionned earlier, has a link for another language: On the page: http:// www.site.com/document/1323, the link http:// fr.site.com/document/1323 can be seen by the bot and be crawled. What do you think about this practise ? Would I get good SEO results for each language ?

• Ubuntu 10.04 hung on unattended apt-get upgrade?

  I'm looking into why our ubuntu web server hung this morning and see that there was some package upgrades a few hours prior to the problem. I was able to ssh into the system and get a snapshot from top: top - 08:13:54 up 210 days, 8:25, 2 users, load average: 433.30, 422.40, 375.70 Tasks: 1192 total, 381 running, 810 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.5%us, 6.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 49549772k total, 48518392k used, 1031380k free, 960152k buffers Swap: 11595768k total, 279368k used, 11316400k free, 39355664k cached This is a 16 processor system, so I would typically expect a load in the low teens. I tried to restart apache, which didn't work, and subsequently had to do a hard reboot to get it working again (which it is). One thing I found was that the server did an unattended package update. Is it possible that upgrading php or curl (which our web sites use) might have caused apache to stop responding?
