• On Ruby on Rails, <%= or <% should only matter whether it is show or no show, but why will it give

• WPF binding not updating until after another action

  I have an observable collection bound to a listbox in WPF. One of the options in the window is to use an OpenFileDialog to add an item to the listbox with certain properties. When I use the OpenFileDialog it immeditaely sets two of the properties of the new item in the observable collection. I am using INotifyPropertyChanged to update the listbox. These two new properties are set correctly and now the listbox should display the title contained in the new title property and the title textbox which is bound to the listbox should display the new title as well. However, neither displays the new title upon the closing of the OpenFileDialog and when I click on another item in the listbox and come back to the item I have just changed it updates the title textbox but the title displayed in the list box is not changed until i move the item in the list box that I want to change. Here is the Binding code. ItemsSource="{Binding Path=MyData, Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" And here is the implementation of the browse button that is not working (L1 being the listbox) private void browse_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { OpenFileDialog opf = new OpenFileDialog(); opf.ShowDialog(); MyData[L1.SelectedIndex].Title = System.IO.Path.GetFileNameWithoutExtension(opf.FileName); MyData[L1.SelectedIndex].Command = opf.FileName; } When I simply type in the text boxes and click out of them it updates the list box immediately with the new information I have put in. I also have a create new button and upon clicking it, it immediately adds a new item to the list box and updates its' properties. • Frame Showing Problem

  Hey Guys I have made one project which is showing the inventory of the stock of one store. In that inventory the software should store data of the products with their images. There is one problem... Bcz of the lots of stock, the screen on which is image is loading taking a lot of time. So, i thought i should give the frame in which there will be on label which will show the "Loading Software". But now when i am setting visible = true for that frame, but bcz of that images screen class loading problem my frame is not showing correctly. I have put screen shot, now my code. • Executing AJAX scripts within an AJAX response

  Hi there, I'm having trouble using AJAX page updates along with other AJAX scripts. During a normal page load, the AJAX scripts (picture scrolling and picture thumbnails) work fine. But when I update a page with AJAX, these scripts (usually loaded in the header of the initial page load) stop working. I am wondering if this is specific to these scripts and I need to look into them deeper to resolve/re-write or if I am missing something more generic in combining AJAX page updates with AJAX scripts the returned code relies on. Embedded javascript runs fine. Thanks for your ideas! • Which layer should create DataContext?

  I have a problem to decide which layer in my system should create DataContext. I have read a book, saying that if do not pass the same DataContext object for all the database updates, it will sometimes get an exception thrown from the DataContext. That's why i initially create new instance of DataContext in business layer, and pass it into data access layer. So that the same datacontext is used for all the updates. But this lead to one design problem, if i wanna change my DAL to Non-LinqToSQL in future, i need to re-write the code in business layer as well. Please give me some advice on this. Thanks. • Need to add totals of select list, and subtract if taken away

  This is the code I am using to calculate the sum of two values (example below) http://www.healthybrighton.co.uk/wse/node/1841 This works to a degree. It will add the two together but only if #edit-submitted-test is selected first, and even then it will show NaN until I select #edit-submitted-test-1. I want it to calculate the sum of the fields and show the amount live, i.e. the value of edit-submitted-test-1 will show 500, then if i select another field it will update to 1000. If i take one selection away it will then subtract it and will be back to 500. Any ideas would be helpful thanks! • Adding an application to OpenWithList with Inno Setup

  I'm trying to write an installer for an app I created. I found a suggestion elsewhere that I was trying to follow and it mostly worked. My app is now in the "Open With" list. However, the app won't run at all. Could it be that it's because the app is not being started in its directory, so it can't find the dlls? • Forcing a page to load itself in another page's iframe

  I'm a fairly inexperienced web designer learning css/html on the fly for a company's web site. I want to keep menus, banners, etc in one document so I don't have to repeat updates across many documents. My solution was to make an index.aspx file with the menus and headers, then have a simple iframe for content. This works quite well and updates easily. the format is: www.site.com/index.aspx?page=page1.htm www.site.com/index.aspx?page=page2.htm The problem -- Google is indexing my iframe'd pages and linking to them directly: www.site.com/page1.htm www.site.com/page2.htm How can I set up redirects to page1.htm forwards to index.aspx?page=page1.htm without creating a "hall of mirrors" effect inside the original iframe?

• Which is the best PDF library for PHP?

  I'm wondering which is the best PDF creation library for PHP, mainly for creating PDFs from scratch (not as much HTML to PDF)? I have worked with FPDF for quite a while now, but it's getting quite old and hasn't had much for updates. I found TCPDF the other day (thanks you another question on SO). It seems very good and is based on FPDF so I don't think it'd be a big transition. FPDI also supports TCPDF which is nice as I have used it before and found it be useful. I have also seen DOMPDF but it too hasn't had many updates for quite some time and is lacking a lot of functionality for general PDF generation. Zend (Zend_Pdf) as well as many other libraries have their own PDF libraries or extend another one, but you often have to setup the entire library, which for existing projects can be a problem. What other libraries are there and what have your experiences with them been with the above or other libraries?

• one page filter results in new page in javascript

  I have links set up on one page and the relationship between the links is a parent child relationship. (For example: Parent: All, Children: Software; Hardware) These links of course lead the user to a new page that shows the results from a table that is populated. Currently these links are all Similar destinations, but just a filter in the url. But the problem is that there is a javascript filter on the page that gives the user to choose between All, Software, or Hardware. Understand basically that if the url is still reading that there on the software page but they just filtered on the page to be Hardware that doesn't look good IMO. So what I was trying to do was make the links on the inital page all go the the exact same destination and somehow still know on the new page which link was clicked and run the javascript filter from knowing which link was clicked on that page. Is there a way to found that out from javascript? I guess a way to pass that value to the new page and retrieving it in javascript without showing it in the url so I can filter the table for the user based on that value?

• Working for free

  Finances are making me take an extended period off of my college education. In my current state, I don't feel fully qualified to be employed by an iPhone software company. While I work on getting things back together, I'd like to try an work for a software company for free in my local area (I'm going to college out of state and have to move back as well). The economy has forced employers to be very picky about who they hire, if any at all. Since I'd like to continue refining my abilities, I was wondering on what the consensus is on working for free. It can't be considered an internship, as I would no longer be in school..., I guess an apprenticeship is more appropriate. Like I said, I don't think I'm qualified to be paid for my services, and I don't want to be. I just don't know how to ask, or if it's even appropriate to ask them to show me how to develop software in the real world. My thinking is that they would be willing to get some work done for free and if I prove myself, they could hire me. If not, there was no major loss. They get some free development, and lose a bit of time helping show me the ropes. I get either a job, or valuable experience that I need. The other alternative is that I try to work out things by myself on the iPhone platform, but that sounds terrifying. I appreciate any input the community has to offer.

  Hi, I need to update a joined sub-class. Since Hibernate doesn't allow to update joined sub-classes in hql or named-query I want to do it via SQL. I also can't use a sql named-query because updates via named-query are not supported in Hibernate. So I decided to use a SQLQuery. But Hibernate complaints about not calling addScalar(). Are updates returning the number of rows affected and how is named that column? Are there any other ways to do an update on a joined sub-class in hibernate? Thanks in advance!

• Design suggestions for creating document management structure using hidden shares.

  I need to add some document management functionality into my software. Documents will be grouped by company name and project name. The folders need to be accessed by the application using the id numbers of clients/projects, but also easily browsed by the end user using windows explorer. Clients and Projects will be stored in a database. I am thinking of having the software create the folders using the friendly name and then using a hidden share with the id number for the software to access the files. The folder structure would be something like this --Company 1 (Company-1234$) -- Project 101 (Project-101$) -- Project 102 (Project-102$) -- Project 103 (Project-103$) -- Company 2 (Company-5678$) -- Project 201 (Project-201$) -- Project 202 (Project-202$) -- Project 203 (Project-203$) So in the example above there would be a company called "Company 1" with a ID of "1234". When browsing the folders using windows explorer the user would see \\ServerName\Documents\Company1 and you could also access the same folder from \\ServerName\Documents\Company-1234$ By using the hidden share, if the company name changes or its renamed for some reason it doesn't break the link in the application because its using the hidden shared based on the ID that never changes. Will having hundreds (maybe thousands) or hidden shares on a server provide a huge performance hit? Does any one have any suggestions or alternatives to provide this feature?

• Which book should I choose?

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a good read on object oriented design. The two books I'm currently looking Head First Design Patterns and Head First Object object-oriented analysis & design. They seem very similar when looking at the contents and browsing through available sample text. Which one would be the best choice? About myself: I have a bachelor in computer science and I am currently studying Msc. Software Quality Engineering (read Software Engineering with focus on Quality). I am already confident in object-oriented design and have a lot of programming courses in my backpack. I have done games in c++, courses in advanced java programming (I am SCJP certified), but my preferred language is C#. I have also worked with Java for the last 7 months while studying. I am currently also studying for certificates in C# (apart from my usual studies). So I believe I have the prerequisites of actually understanding the contents of both books. Reason: I just want to be better and keep evolving as a programmer. I think it is fun. I believe Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra are involved in both these books and I have previously read their SCJP preparation book in java. I really do enjoy their style of writing.   Hello guys, I was checking out the stocktwits.com website. While signing up I provided them with my twitter username. Now whenever I tweet and if my tweet contains $ and a stock ticker symbol - it instantly appears on Stocktwits.com I am interested in implementing something similar in my website. Just wanted an understanding of how this would work. This is how I'm assuming it would work at a high level: 1) On my website - require users to provide their twitter usernames 2) Run a cron job every few minutes to pull the latest tweets for each of the usernames provided using something like http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/username.xml I've tried Stocktwits and they updates are almost instantaneous - so it does not appear like they are checking for updates every few minutes.   Lately I bumped repeatedly into the concept of LFSR, that I find quite interesting because of its links with different fields and also fascinating in itself. It took me some effort to understand, the final help was this really good page, much better than the (at first) cryptic wikipedia entry. So I wanted to write some small code for a program that worked like a LFSR. To be more precise, that somehow showed how a LFSR works. • rundll32.exe constantly running taking up resources slowing down my Win 7 computer

  Over the past week, my Windows 7 Home Premium computer (8gb RAM, 64bit) has been running slowly. When I look at my processes, there are always 2 rundll32.exe's running taking up 3 & 25% CPU power, memory slowly creeping upwards from around 115mb to 160mb each in the time it has taken me to right this message, sometimes popping upt o 300mb and back down. Svchost.exe is at 260mb. When I end those processes, everything returns to snappiness. I recently did some Windows Updates, and I think it was around the time my computer started acting slowly, but I can't remember if it was before or after the updates that things started running slowly. Last night I ccleaned & defrag'ed. How can I diagnose what's causing the slowness?

  How to use optimistic locking with batch updates? I am using SimpleJdbcTemplate and for single row I can build update sql that increments version column value and includes version in WHERE clause. Unfortunately te result int[] updated = simpleJdbcTemplate.batchUpdate does not contain rowcounts when using oracle driver. All elements are -2 indicating unknown rowcount. Is there some other, more performant way of doing this than executing all updates individually? These batches contain an average of 5 items (only) but may be up to 250.

Through my site I receive the extended persmission to post news to the users' news feeds. My question is can I automatically post news feeds to these users without them being logged in to my site? • ASP.NET MVC UpdateModel - fields vs properties??

  I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() did not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. SOLVED: MVC.NET does indeed handle inherited properties just fine. This turned out to have nothing to do with inheritance. My base class was implemented with public fields, not properties. Switching them to formal properties (adding {get; set; }) was all I needed. This has bitten me before, I keep wanting to use simple, public fields. I would argue that fields and properties are syntactically identical, and could be argued to be semantically equivalent, for the user of the class.
