• Meaning of directories on Unix and Unix like systems

  I've been using Linux for a couple of years now but I still haven't figured out what the origin or meaning of some the directory names are on Unix and Unix like systems. E.g. what does etc stand for or var? Where does the opt name come from? And while we're on the topic anyway. Can someone give a clear explanation of what directory is best used for what. I sometimes get confused where certain software is installed or what the most appropriate directory is to install software into.

• Google Contacts and Mac OS X Address Book

  The sync that Google offers for Google Contacts < Mac OS X Address Book is seriously flawed. It doesn't sync automatically, it doesn't sync all contacts, it doesn't sync all fields. See here for a list of warnings and issues. Is there a better way to sync Google Contacts to Mac Address Book bidirectionally? Preferably free, and preferably without adding extra software. I have tried to do it through Plaxo (which has an excellent Mac Address Book sync, albeit through an extra software install), but Plaxo doesn't handle Google Sync well (no updates). UPDATE: For the new Mac OS X Snow Leopard this shouldn't be an issue. This question is looking for a Leopard answer.

  After searching in my start menu and clicking to "see more results", I got an error dialog: It "seems" that it should be search-ms:query=document an not search:query=document but where can I fix this? Additional info: New user account don't have the problem. Windows 7 Ultimate - RTM Disabling/Enabling again "Windows Search" (in Start Control Panel Programs Turn Windows Features on or off) doesn't fix it. (There's a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Search in my registry that's not there normally.) - outdated see comments... • Most basic, low power home surveillance system

  I am thinking of setting up a simple but effective surveillance system for my house that is: Very low powered (preferably no PCs left running out of stand-by mode) Cheap. When motion (or sound) is detected, I would like it to: Send an email/phone alert to me Record and upload video to the web (in case they steal the camera) So I imagine a system where I leave a netbook PC in stand-by mode and have it woken up by a motion detector. This initiates software to send alerts and periodically upload recorded video to the web. The software part is easy for me, but I'm not really a gadget-man so I'd like some advice on using a motion sensor of some sort to wake up the PC. Does anyone have some good advice? • Canon LiDE 600F FAU on Snow Leopard?

  Hello, I have been able to use my Canon LiDE 600F scanner under Snow Leopard to scan paper sheet, after installing Canon's latest driver software. However, I cannot find a way to make the FAU (Film Adaptor Unit) to work: Canon's software want to calibrate it first and gives an error message "Calibration cannot be performed. Pull out the film. 182.0.0". (of course there is no film). Hamrick's VueScan doesn't seem to support the FAU Apple's Image Capture doesn't propose a film option either Did I miss something? Did somebody manage to scan film (positive or negative) using the LiDE 600F under Snow Leopard? Many thanks

• Getting Android drivers to work on Windows 8 Community Preview

  I made a post about this on android.stackexchange.com, and they referred me to here. I have an HTC Flyer and a Motorola Droid X, and for both, I've been unable to connect to USB debugging to do Android development. With the Motorola Droid X, the MotoHelper installer won't run, saying that I'm running an Unknown OS Version. With the HTC Flyer, HTC's Sync software installs successfully, but again the device doesn't connect. I realize that this is beta software, but is there anything that I can do to get this working? I've been relying on switching back to my laptop running Linux to test out my Android builds on the device. Of course, I'm not in any production environment - just playing around with the new OS, but not being able to write code on it makes less fun.

• Distributed Development Tools -- (Version control and Project Management)

  Hello, I've recently become responsible for choosing which source control and project management software to use for a company that employs me. Currently it uses Jira (project management) and Subversion (version control). I know there are many other options out there -- the ones I know about are all in this article http://mashable.com/2010/07/14/distributed-developer-teams/ . I'm leaning towards recommending they just stay with what they have as it seems workable and any change would have to be worth the cost of switching to say github/basecamp or some other solution. Some details on the team: It's a distributed development shop. Meetings of the whole team in one room are rare. It's currently a very small development team (three developers). The project management software is used by developers and a product manager or two. What are you experiences with version control and project management web applications? Are there any you would recommend and you think are worth the switching cost of time to learn new services / implementing the change? Edit: After educating myself further on the options it appears DVCS offer powerful benefits that may be worth investing in now as opposed to later in the company's lifetime when the switching cost is higher: I'm a Subversion geek, why I should consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

• Ideas for my MSc project and Google Summer of Code 2011

  I'm currently putting together ideas for my master's project which I'll be working on over the summer, and I would like to be able to use this time to help Ubuntu in some way. I have the freedom to come up with pretty much any project in the field of software development/engineering provided it Is a substantial piece of software (for reference, I will be working on it for five full months) Solves a problem for more people than just myself I was hoping to use this project as an opportunity to get some experience with the underbelly of Linux, so that I can mention on my CV that I have 'experience in developing for *NIX in C++', which I'm noticing more and more companies are looking for these days, probably because stuff's moving to cloud servers and that's where Linux rules the roost. My problem is that, since I don't have the experience to begin with, I'm not sure what to do for such a project, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I've noticed from Daniel Holbach's blog that Ubuntu participated in the Google Summer of Code 2010, and that project ideas for that can be found here. However, I have not been able to find anything related to Ubuntu and GSoC 2011, but I have noticed from the GSoC timeline that the list of mentoring organisations will not be published until March 18th. I have two questions here. Has Ubuntu applied to be a part of Summer of Code 2011, and what is the status of the 2010 project list linked to earlier. Were they all implemented or are there still some that can be picked up now, should I not participate in GSoC? I'd like to do something for Ubuntu, but I'd rather not spend my time reinventing the wheel.

• Unable to see External HDD in Windows Explorer

  I have bought a 320GB External HDD which I want to use with my Playstation3. I know it will only work with a Fat32 file system so using some free HP software it formatted it, unbeknown to me it will only work up to 32GB. After seeing this I panicked, downloaded Partition Wizard Home Edition and deleted the partition. As I was about to create a new partition to put it back to NTFS (I'd just wanted to be able to use it in the first place at this point) I accidently knocked the cable out of my computer for the HDD and after replacing it the External HDD is no longer recognised by the My Computer option, Disk Management asks me to initialise the disc using MBR but it fails saying "Copy protected". Even the partitioning software I previously mentioned can't do anything about it, all it says is "Bad Condition" and I can't perform any operations on it. Would anybody be able to guide me in getting this sorted? I'm terrified i've wasted a perfectly good 320GB HDD.

• Mac OS X 10.6 issues connecting via vpn to Microsoft server

  I am currently running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and trying to use the native vpn client to connect to our Microsoft vpn server. If I route all traffic via the vpn connection I am able to connect to our servers, however, external traffic to i.e. google or stack overflow is blocked. If I uncheck the checkbox to route all traffic via the vpn I can connect to the vpn, however, I can not connect to my servers, external traffic to google or stackoverflow works though. Is this a vpn client issue, do I need to purchase Mac OS X vpn software instead of the native client, or is there a Microsoft vpn server setting that has to be checked. I am not familiar with the server software, but I wanted to post this question here to help out our network admin with the Mac OS X machines.

• Display a Text Message During Bootup of Windows 7

  Sometimes you might want to leave a text message for a user before they log into a Windows 7 computer. Today we show you a neat trick that allows you to leave a message they can read before logging in. Add a Text Message To add a message, click on Start and enter regedit into the Search box and hit Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\System and double-click on legalnoticecaption. In the Value data field enter in the header you want…for instance your company name or the name of your computer…whatever you want it to be, then click OK. Then double-click on legalnoticetext … And in the Value data field enter in the message you want to display and click OK. Close out of Registry Editor and reboot the computer.   After the machine reboots you’ll see the text message you just created at the Welcome screen.   You can include whatever text message you want to be included for the user to read before they log in.
