• Determining where to animate the map given a list of GeoPoints

  My android application loads some markers on an overlay onto a MapView. The markers are placed based on a dynamic list of GeoPoints. I want to move the map center and zoom into the area with most items. Naively, I can calculate the superposition of all the points, but I would like to remove the points that are very far from the mass of points from the calculation. Is there a known way to calculate this ? (e.g. probability, statistics .. ?)

  When it comes to threads and orientation changes, it seems the normal thing to do is something like this: public class Bwent extends Activity { private static Bwent instance; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); instance = this; } //... That way, if you're making a network request with a thread, and someone changes the orientation of the phone, the thread will know to use the new Activity. However, is it possible that the thread could finish during the time Android is destroying the old Activity and creating a new one? Is there a moment in the process where the thread still might be pointing to the wrong Activity, or a partially destroyed activity? It seems like there shouldn't be, but even using a Handler created in the main thread, I'm having intermittent issues with a thread trying to update an object that no longer exists. It's rare, but it does happen.

• AsyncTask won't stop even when the activity has destroyed

  Hi all, I have an AsyncTask object which starts executing when the activity is created and does stuff in the background (downloads upto 100 images). Everything works fine but there is this peculiar behavior which i'm not able to understand. For eg: when the android screen's orientation changes then the activity is destroyed and created again. So I override the onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() method and save all the downloaded data executed in the AsyncTask. My purpose of doing this is to not have AsyncTask run each time activity is destroyed-created during orientation changes, but as i can see in my logs the previous AsynTask is still executing. (The data is saved correctly though) I even tried to cancel the AsynTask in the onDestroy() method of the activity but the logs still show AsynTask as running. This is really strange behavior and would really be thankful if someone can tell me the correct procedure to stop/cancel the AsynTask. Thanks

• Alternatives to sign() in sqlite for custom order by

  I have a string column which contains some numeric fields, but a lot are 0, empty string or null. The rest are numbers having different range, all positive. I tried to create a custom order by. The order would be done by two fields. First I would like to order the fields that have this number 0 and then sort by name. So something this would work: select * from table order by sign(referenceid) desc, name asc; But Sqlite lacks the sign() -1/0/1 function, and I am on Android and I can't create user defined functions. What other options I have to get this sort done.

• Optimising Androidplot

  Seems Androidplot (androidplot.com) website/forums are down so I'll try asking this question here. I have multi touch zoom and scrolling. Similar code to http://mlepicki.com/2012/03/androidplot-multitouch-zoom-scroll/ except that I have a bar graph instead. However with 100 data points it has noticeable lag. Even with 10 bars are just showing. Sounds like its drawing/calculating/etc all bars. Any idea on how I could optimise this? I can't use hardware rendering as I want to support Android 2.1 and the library doesn't support it(it breaks).

• overlay items from mysql

  I have several locations in tables in a mysql database which i want to have displayed as POI's, the table is too large and changes too frequently to use sql lite so i need to get the info from mysql. I have set up a mapView indicating the device location in mapview using an image at drawable, but i now need to ad the other locations from the database. Then when a user clicks on an item i need a popup with options to route there using google maps navigation, or view mobi site, phone, or email. I am new to android. Please assist. Have gone through the overlay tut but no indication on how to get the info from db. Is there a tut somwhere so i can see some example code to do this?

• Proper programming procedure?

  I am creating a scoring application which is dependent upon what a user selects at the beginning menu. Example: If a user clicks 18, I want it to base itself off 18 holes of golf. If a user clicks 9, I want it to base itself off 9 holes of golf. Is it better to create a separate class for the code for 9 holes, and then another for 18 holes and then launch whichever depending on what the user selects? Or should I keep everything in 1 file and use a global variable to define different parameters? Still very new to android programming (or programming in general) so not sure of the proper "etiquette" if you will... Also what would be the pro's and con's of doing it either way? • How to go through every record in sqllite db?

  Hi guys. I think it's kinda easy one but still I'm new to android programming so please have patience. I want to know how can I get the number of records (rows) in a specific table in my db. I need this so I can create a loop to go through every record and add each one of it to the specific Array and display it later on. Actually, I want to query data from Media provider with Content provider & content resolver. c = mContent.query(CONTENT_URI,projection,where,null,null); My question is, how can I query data from media provider as below using a GROUP BY clause: select DISTINCT _id, count(_id), _data FROM aaa_table WHERE _data LIKE "A" OR _data LIKE "B" GROUP BY _id; I have tried setting projection and where as follows: final String[] projection = new String[] { "_id", "COUNT ("+ _id +")" , "_data" }; and where: _data LIKE "A" OR _data LIKE "B" but, I couldn't find how to set the query option GROUP BY _id.   I'm trying to build a gadget that detects pistol shots using Android. It's a part of a training aid for pistol shooters that tells how the shots are distributed in time and I use a HTC Tattoo for testing. I use the MediaRecorder and its getMaxAmplitude method to get the highest amplitude during the last 1/100 s but it does not work as expected; speech gives me values from getMaxAmplitude in the range from 0 to about 25000 while the pistol shots (or shouting!) only reaches about 15000. With a sampling frequency of 8kHz there should be some samples with considerably high level. Anyone who knows how these things work? Are there filters that are applied before registering the max amplitude. If so, is it hardware or software? Thanks, /George

• Why isn't this simple program working?

  I'm writing a very basic program that aims for the text view to display the phrase "Hello" after a button is pressed on the screen. However, I can't get this program to work; every time I run it, it says that the application has stopped unexpectedly. • Resizing the Camera Preview

  I have implemented a camera application, which will show the preview in the entire screen of the device. But my requirement is to show the Camera preview in a small screen. My device resolution is 800x480(WxH) i.e, Nexus one. I can able to show the preview in the entire screen without scale down the preview. Its coming perfectly, but when i try show the preview in small screens(part of my total mobile screen), the preview is getting stretched and not looking good. Is there any way to show the preview correctly in a small screen. I think we need to scale down the image preview. But when i try to scale down the image preview, the android system itself doesn't allowing to set the scaled preview size. Could any one please help me how to scale the image preview in small screen.

• Questions Regarding Handling of Received SMS

  Hi, i have managed to successfully write a little test app that can receive and send SMS, but got a couple of questions. (That's 'cos part of the code i copied from elsewhere and i would like to understand better). In my AndroidManifest as well as the sub-class of BroadcastReceiver, there is reference to the string literal "android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED". However, i couldn't find any reference in the API that mentions this. Could someone point me to some reference that lists/explains these? As part of getting the message from the Intent, i did this: Object[] pdus = (Object[]) intent.getExtras().get("pdus"); Again this question is related to the use of hardcoded string literal. Where is the string "pdus" listed and described? Thanks in advance!

• Problems using Custom Layout in XML

  I've created a new GridLayout class that I want to use in an XML File. The class is in another project. I've created the attrs.xml file in the other project with my properties but when the constructor gets called with the AttributeSet, none of the values are set. In my xml for my screen layout, I refer to the layout with the following: xmlns:gridLayout="@com.mastertechsoftware.AndroidUtil:http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/com.mastertechsoftware.AndroidUtil" Not sure if that is right. I have the attrs.xml file being compiled to R.java in com/mastertechsoftware/AndroidUtil. All the right styleable values are there. In my constructor, I use: TypedArray a = c .obtainStyledAttributes(attrs, R.styleable.GridLayout); this.numRows = a.getInt(R.styleable.GridLayout_numRows, -1); Nothing comes back (-1 does but that means nothing is there) If I use int n = a.getIndexCount(); I get 0.

• Java Thread Message Passing

  I'm writing an Android app. I have a main method, which creates and runs a new Thread using an anonymous inner Runnable class. The run() method, when it's done, calls a method on it's parent class (in the main thread) that calls notifyDataSetChanged() so that the main thread can redraw the new data. This is causing all kinds of trouble (ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException). The thing is, this method being called from the worker thread is on the class that's created in the UI thread. Shouldn't that be running on the UI thread? Or am I missing something? Here's some code about what I'm talking about: public class Mealfire extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { (new Thread() { public void run() { // Do a bunch of slow network stuff. update(); } }).start(); } private void update() { myAdapter.notifyDatasetChanged(); } }

• Phonegap and JqueryMobile freeze UI events and functions

  I am developing a Phonegap app with JQuery mobile with their latest stable versinos (Phonegap 3 and JQM 1.3.2) for Android platform. My app downloads feeds from Google Feeds API and saves in a SQLite database. But whenever it starts fetching and saving data from the web (the no of feeds that download at a time can be many), the other functionality such as button events halt and freeze. To be precise the a button that opens and closes a panel does not either open or close the panel until the data fetching stops. How am I supposed to solve this issue? The performance has dropped drastically due to this issue in my app.

• App crashes on back button / Activities & Intents

  I have an android application which starts a new activity Intent startAuthorization = new Intent(AndroidActivity, AuthorizeUser.class); startActivityForResult(startAuthorization,4711); When that new activity is done (a ok button is clicked) I call setResult(RESULT_OK, returnResult); finish(); Which works fine. In case the user doesn't click the okay button but uses the return button of the phone (this arrow pointing around to the left) the application has a force close. I have set a breakpoint on the first line of my method onActivityResult but the debugger never stops there. I have no idea where the issue comes up - how can I find out? Is there a method I have to overwrite to handle this back button?

  I am trying a database app on Android. I want to use the SQLiteDatabase update(...) convenience method to update a record. Normally, for a WHERE clause of a single key this is working.   I am trying to create a Tasker plugin. Everything is fine, and works pretty well. I can configure a String to be sent in my app by using EditActivity and this code, following the examples: resultIntent.putExtra(com.twofortyfouram.locale.Intent.EXTRA_BUNDLE,PluginBundleManager.generateBundle(getApplicationContext(),message)); resultIntent.putExtra(com.twofortyfouram.locale.Intent.EXTRA_STRING_BLURB,generateBlurb(getApplicationContext(), message)); setResult(RESULT_OK, resultIntent); The problem comes when I want to use this code to get the battery level for instance, so I added: resultIntent.putExtra("net.dinglisch.android.tasker.extras.VARIABLE_REPLACE_KEYS",com.twofortyfouram.locale.Intent.EXTRA_STRING_BLURB); but the app is not working and I get a string %BATT as the result, the variable is not replaced... As I haven't found any example, I would be pleased to get some help to make it work.

  What's the best way to unstub the following functions? // Convert a bit-vector to an integer. int bitvec2int(boolean[] b) { [CODE HERE] } // Convert an integer x to an n-element bit-vector. boolean[] int2bitvec(int x, int n) { [CODE HERE] } Or is there a better way to do that sort of thing than passing boolean arrays around? This comes up in an Android app where we need an array of 20 booleans to persist and the easiest way to do that is to write an integer or string to the key-value store. • Design best practice - best way to handle user selection

  I'm an experienced developer (WPF) moving over to Android development. My question: an app I am developing allows the user to browse their local storage (such as SDCARD) and select a file. Now, should I simply create a new Activity (after the user has made a selection) to handle what I want to have the app do with that chosen file, -or- is the better approach to pass the path/name of the selected file back to the main Activity and let IT launch the next Activity? In other words, is the better practice to have the main Activity launch other (support) activities, or is it perfectly ok and normal to have one activity chain to another and on and on? Thanks!
