• Reverse Proxy issues IIS on Windows Server 2012

  I've tried searching, but nothing seems to be working. I have a feeling it might be due to our custom Rewrite module. Here is the excerpt from the web.config that sets it up: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> <add name="UrlRewriteModule" type="EShop.UrlRewriteModule"/> </modules> EShop.UrlRewriteModule is a custom class in App_Code which handles incoming requests. I have set up the rewrite rules but it doesn't seem to want to work. I'm inclined to think that our rewrite class is interfering earlier than the proxy rules and saying that the page doesn't exist. Here's what we're trying to accomplish: We are working on a new site for a client, but they have a forum that they're not likely to want to move. I set up a new subdomain to point to the new server while the site is being completed (before we go live) and want the reverse proxy to forward test.domain.com/forum to www.domain.com/forum. After the site goes live, we'll need to forward using an IP address instead. I've set up a reverse proxy successfully with nginx, but we didn't want to set up another server if we didn't need to. Ideas?

• Replacement for public folder workflow, I'm confused as to how sharepoint does it.

  For years Microsoft has been slowly phasing out public folders, perhaps exchange 2010 really is the LAST TIME they'll be shipped... I've heard sharepoint is the replacement, but I don't understand full, can someone give me an idea of how to replace this workflow? In our office, we have projects, they have a project number, ie 10353. Each job folder has a public folder, organized in a hierachy like Projects Year Folder Subfolders The main subfolder we use is for genera correspondence. When an email is received that relates to a project, it is dragged and dropped (or right click move to) a public folder. Adding public folder favourites for each user helps this. When an email is sent, we have a custom email form, which is the default email form, but with a project number field next to the subject line. When you enter the job number in there, it carbon copies our filing system in, which reads the job number and puts the email in the public folder for you. if you need to refer to emails, you go to public folder and find them there. This isn't the best with large jobs, but it works ok. Now, I have limited experience with sharepoint (well, WSS), we've used it to do some neat discussion boards/polls etc as an intranet site, but I haven't seen much of its integration with outlook. The great thing about our solution is how tightly it integrates with outlook which is exactly where the emails are. If you want to forward an old email, you go to public folder and forward it, simple. Any solution that replaces it should be at least as easy as this. Improvements we would like would be to have better searching of emails, better support in exchange (ie future version) and also, custom forms in outlook are being phased out (the VBA kind), so avoiding these would be good. Does sharepoint do this? or what solutions do this kind of thing?

  I am trying to find out the practicalities of doing a mail merge when each “record” to be merged on includes some images. I need to: print letters And envelopes Both the letters and the envelopes have: Fixed text Fixed images Text that come from the mail merge record Images that come from the mail merge record I don’t know if all images will be the same size for every record, so a bit of simple “on the fly” automatic formatting may be needed . I need to be able to repeat a single item if I get a problem (e.g when folding the letter). What problems am I likely to have? Is Word 2007 up to this sort of mail merging, or should I be looking at a report writing tool? How do I restart a print run after a printer jam etc? What format should I store the “records” and there images in? E.g Can standard software cope with images that are stored in separate files named after the “CustomerId” that is in the “record” (I can write custom software if needed, but would rather use standard “of-the-shelf” software for the printing, I am planning on custom software for the data creation, so can output in whatever format is needed)

• Clone Microsoft VM > SharePoint issues

  Hi, We have an existing (production) Hyper-V VM that I want to clone to create a staging server. This server is NOT on a domain/active-directory - uses all local computer accounts. It is Windows 2008 OS, SharePoint 2007, SQL server 2008, Reporting Services, and some custom line-of-business web-applications. We rename the server etc as per the documentation we have, but are having troubles specifically with SharePoint. Some of the sites do not come up, and some issues adding/updating site settings such as site owners. Does anyone know of a definitive resource to this process? thanks Update: We seem to have most working, but the Shared Service Provider, and the SSP's admin site, are not working. In addition, the custom web-parts that reference IIS Session objects are failing (which seem to be related to the Share Service Provider). All the Windows user accounts for various services are renamed during the server cloning, but the windows account names in SQL server are not automatically changed. • EC2 kernel decision and issues with creating a new machine with my AMI

  I could really use some advice. I started a new instance on EC2 using Amazon's AMI and during the deployment process I selected a Kernel ID of "Use Default". I then configured my server the way that I wanted to and took a snapshot of it. I then created my own AMI to create new servers with. When I try and create a new server with this AMI the server fails to start and I get the error: EXT3-fs: sda1: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240). Which appears to happen because I am selecting a kernel id of "Use default" again when building my second server. I have read that in order for this to work I need to choose the same kernel id that was used in my original server. I have deleted my original server and don't know what it was using. What is the best process to follow in order to not have these issues? Should I choose "Use Default" for my original server? How do you know which kernel it selected? Then should I just document this and always specify this during the deployment of my next servers using my custom AMI? OR should I choose a custom kernel id during the initial build and always use this one moving ahead hoping Amazon never retires it? Thanks for any advice!

• Unable to set initcwnd on a Hetzner server

  We just ordered a bunch of Hetzner EX40SSD servers with the minimal Debian install image that they provide and everything is just fine except that looking at tcpdumps for fine tuning the network from various locations the initcwnd param seems to be stuck at 6 no matter how we change it. By default Debian 3.2 kernels should have that setting to 10 so it's pretty strange. Is it possible that the NIC driver or a custom setting in the Hetzner Debian image is limiting this param? Even if we set it to 4, like the old kernel default, it doesn't work. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Does anyone know if the NIC drivers provided by default by Debian have some kind on limitation. In a long thread in http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1200617&highlight=hetzner they talk about a page http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Installation_des_r8168-Treibers/en where Hetzner states that the included Realtek r8168 driver is not working properly, but nowhere do they say that the initcwnd could be affected. Tomorrow i will try to install a CentOs image and see if Debian is the problem...Last resort would be to install a custom debian image, but that is a pain in the ass! Thanks!

• Setting umask for all users

  I'm trying to set the default umask to 002 for all users including root on my CentOS box. According to this and other answers, this can be achieved by editing /etc/profile. However the comments at the top of that file say: It's NOT a good idea to change this file unless you know what you are doing. It's much better to create a custom.sh shell script in /etc/profile.d/ to make custom changes to your environment, as this will prevent the need for merging in future updates. So I went ahead and created the following file: /etc/profile.d/myapp.sh with the single line: umask 002 Now, when I create a file logged in as root, the file is born with 664 permissions, the way I had hoped. But files created by my Apache wsgi application, or files created with sudo, still default to 644 permissions... $ touch newfile (as root): Result = 664 (Works) $ sudo touch newfile: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Files created by Apache wsgi app: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Files created by Python's RotatingFileHandler: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Why is this happening, and how can I ensure 664 file permissions system wide, no matter what creates the file? UPDATE: I ended up finding a cleaner solution to this on a per-directory basis using ACLs, which I describe here.

  How do I disable the Windows + U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it[1]. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win + U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). • SSH Keys Authentication keeps asking for password

  Im trying to set access from ServerA(SunOS) to ServerB(Some custom Linux with Keyboard Interactive login) with SSH Keys. As a proof of concept I was able to do it between 2 virtual machines. Now in my real life scenario it isnt working. I created the keys in ServerA, copied them to ServerB, chmod'd .ssh folders to 700 on both ServerA,B. What could be happening? EDIT WITH ANSWER: Problem was that I didnt have those settings enabled in the sshd_config (Refer to accepted answer) AND that while pasting the key from ServerA to ServerB it would interpret the key as 3 separate lines. What I did was, in case you cant use ssh-copy-id like I couldnt. Paste the first line of your key in your "ServerB" authorized_keys file WITHOUT the last 2 characters, then type yourself the missing characters from line 1 and the first one from line 2, this will prevent adding a "new line" between the first and second line of the key. Repeat with the 3d line.

• How to write rules for persistent net names?

  I know that a process generates persistent network card names based on rules found in /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules. I also know how to completely disable this process with a simple echo '#' > /etc/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules but I've read that I "could also write my own rules file to give the interface a name — the persistent rules generator ignores the interface if a name has already been set" (/etc/udev/rules.d/README confirms that this is possible). Do you have any pointers to documentation about how to write such rules? (I mostly care about Debian/Ubuntu and a bit less for CentOS) As a specific example of why I want to write custom rules: I have two identical servers with one onboard LAN and one PCI LAN. In case of HW failure I want to be able to move disks from HW#1 to HW#2 and it's important for eth0 to continue pointing to the onboard card and eth1 to the PCI card (no one wants to mess with cabling in the middle of a HW failure panic). My current workaround works but is a lot of work[1] so I wonder if writing custom rules would allow me to express something simple like this: cards with MAC A or B should be named eth0 cards with MAC C or D should be named eth1 follow default naming scheme for anything else [1] install the OS in HW#1 and keep a copy of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. Move the disks to HW#2 and keep a second copy of the same file. Concatenate the two copies and manually edit the NAME="ethX" part. Replace /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules with my version. Finally disable auto-creation of a new 70-persistent-net.rules using echo '#' > /etc/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules

  I am using puppet and the puppet network device management module and I am trying to build my custom type. In the built-in type for the routers configuration, you can specify a list of nodes and then the configuration inside that node: node "c2950.domain.com" { Interface { duplex => auto, speed => auto } interface { "FastEthernet 0/1": description => "--> to end-user workstation", mode => access, native_vlan => 1000 # [...] More configuration } What I am trying to do, is to move the manifest declaration of the nodes and the configuration of my custom type to a Hiera file like this one: nodes: - node1 - node2 config_device: node1: custom_parameter: "whatever1" node2: custom_parameter: "whatever2" And then in the manifest iterate over the hiera file creating the nodes with the configuration of each node with something like (I am taking as reference this question in serverfault): class my_class { $nodes = hiera_array('nodes') define hash_extract() { $conf_hash = hiera_hash("config_device") $custom_paramter = $conf_hash[$name] ## TRICK lies in $name variable node $name { my_custom_device { $name: custom_parameter => $device_conf['custom_parameter'] } } } hash_extract{$pdu_names: } } } But for this solution I have two problems, I can not define a node inside a define and I can not parameterize a node name. However, the module is sometimes loaded using Import-Module MyModule -Force (actually, this is in the install script of the module). • FTP Scripting Capabilities

  I am looking for an FTP client that will allow me to do the following Include a GUI for setting up a number of FTP connections Support FTPS Run unattended on Windows Server 2008 Retry failed transactions Support email Support custom scripts I need to pull files from a few different servers and there are certain calculations that need to be done depending on which server the files come from. I've looked at SmartFTP and it looks like pretty much what I need except I can't get it to run as a Windows Scheduled Task (I currently have some support threads open in their forum). I've also looked at a few other FTP clients (Filezilla, RoboFTP, and AutoFTP (you can find the Windows 7 BSOD in this one!)) that haven't had the capabilities I'm looking for. Right now, I'm looking at WS_FTP and its scripting capabilities. It appears I can create a script to run as a scheduled task, but I can't add the script to a file transfer task. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can do post-transfer processing on the files or better yet how to integrate scripting into the file transfer task? I'm also open to other suggestions for FTP clients as well if you have them! If I can't find a suitable FTP client, custom scripting will just have to do the trick.

• Looking for VCS wrapper that tracks system files changing across the whole *nix OS and sends diffs through email

  I need some software that looks after custom directories across the whole OS (i.e. /etc) and alerting me if someone edit something file inside. Additionally, this tool must automatically commit and push changes into backup server, so I can easily determine when specific change in specific file was made. I'm using cvsbackup right now but I want to create or found something more modern. I think using git as VCS is a great idea. I could have local repository and easily revert changes in my configuration files. Furthermore, pushing changes to the remote repository would helps me to recover my configuration files when the server is fault. It doesn't seems difficult to write some wrapper around the git but there are a lot of problems. For example, I need to track custom directories: /usr/local/nginx/ and /etc/. So the destination point for my git repository is /. I don't need to track the other directories so I must to write overwhelming .gitignore rule: * !.gitignore !/etc/ !etc/* !/usr /usr/* !/usr/local /usr/local/* !/usr/local/nginx !/usr/local/nginx/* It's very daunting and prone to error. So it's maybe a good idea to create intermediate file that wrapper reads and converts to .gitignore format. Additionally, I don't want to keep my .git folder in / partition so I need to set appropriate GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE variables for git. Is there any ready to use tools for implementation this task? I don't found any but I don't believe that no one needs this feature.

The application starts up fine, the database tables are created by hibernate and data is imported by my database importer, so Seam is alive, running and well. • Loading jQuery Consistently in a .NET Web App

  One thing that frequently comes up in discussions when using jQuery is how to best load the jQuery library (as well as other commonly used and updated libraries) in a Web application. Specifically the issue is the one of versioning and making sure that you can easily update and switch versions of script files with application wide settings in one place and having your script usage reflect those settings in the entire application on all pages that use the script. Although I use jQuery as an example here, the same concepts can be applied to any script library - for example in my Web libraries I use the same approach for jQuery.ui and my own internal jQuery support library. The concepts used here can be applied both in WebForms and MVC. Loading jQuery Properly From CDN Before we look at a generic way to load jQuery via some server logic, let me first point out my preferred way to embed jQuery into the page. I use the Google CDN to load jQuery and then use a fallback URL to handle the offline or no Internet connection scenario. Why use a CDN? CDN links tend to be loaded more quickly since they are very likely to be cached in user's browsers already as jQuery CDN is used by many, many sites on the Web. Using a CDN also removes load from your Web server and puts the load bearing on the CDN provider - in this case Google - rather than on your Web site. On the downside, CDN links gives the provider (Google, Microsoft) yet another way to track users through their Web usage. Here's how I use jQuery CDN plus a fallback link on my WebLog for example: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.4/jquery.min.js"></script> <script> if (typeof (jQuery) == 'undefined') document.write(unescape("%3Cscript " + "src='/Weblog/wwSC.axd?r=Westwind.Web.Controls.Resources.jquery.js' %3E%3C/script%3E")); </script> <title>Rick Strahl's Web Log</title> ... </head>   You can see that the CDN is referenced first, followed by a small script block that checks to see whether jQuery was loaded (jQuery object exists). If it didn't load another script reference is added to the document dynamically pointing to a backup URL. In this case my backup URL points at a WebResource in my Westwind.Web  assembly, but the URL can also be local script like src="/scripts/jquery.min.js". Important: Use the proper Protocol/Scheme for  for CDN Urls [updated based on comments] If you're using a CDN to load an external script resource you should always make sure that the script is loaded with the same protocol as the parent page to avoid mixed content warnings by the browser. You don't want to load a script link to an http:// resource when you're on an https:// page. The easiest way to use this is by using a protocol relative URL: <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.6.4/jquery.min.js"></script> which is an easy way to load resources from other domains. This URL syntax will automatically use the parent page's protocol (or more correctly scheme). As long as the remote domains support both http:// and https:// access this should work. BTW this also works in CSS (with some limitations) and links. BTW, I didn't know about this until it was pointed out in the comments. This is a very useful feature for many things - ah the benefits of my blog to myself :-) Version Numbers When you use a CDN you notice that you have to reference a specific version of jQuery. When using local files you may not have to do this as you can rename your private copy of jQuery.js, but for CDN the references are always versioned. The version number is of course very important to ensure you getting the version you have tested with, but it's also important to the provider because it ensures that cached content is always correct. If an existing file was updated the updates might take a very long time to get past the locally cached content and won't refresh properly. The version number ensures you get the right version and not some cached content that has been changed but not updated in your cache. On the other hand version numbers also mean that once you decide to use a new version of the script you now have to change all your script references in your pages. Depending on whether you use some sort of master/layout page or not this may or may not be easy in your application. Even if you do use master/layout pages, chances are that you probably have a few of them and at the very least all of those have to be updated for the scripts. If you use individual pages for all content this issue then spreads to all of your pages. Search and Replace in Files will do the trick, but it's still something that's easy to forget and worry about. Personaly I think it makes sense to have a single place where you can specify common script libraries that you want to load and more importantly which versions thereof and where they are loaded from. Loading Scripts via Server Code Script loading has always been important to me and as long as I can remember I've always built some custom script loading routines into my Web frameworks. WebForms makes this fairly easy because it has a reasonably useful script manager (ClientScriptManager and the ScriptManager) which allow injecting script into the page easily from anywhere in the Page cycle. What's nice about these components is that they allow scripts to be injected by controls so components can wrap up complex script/resource dependencies more easily without having to require long lists of CSS/Scripts/Image includes. In MVC or pure script driven applications like Razor WebPages  the process is more raw, requiring you to embed script references in the right place. But its also more immediate - it lets you know exactly which versions of scripts to use because you have to manually embed them. In WebForms with different controls loading resources this often can get confusing because it's quite possible to load multiple versions of the same script library into a page, the results of which are less than optimal… In this post I look a simple routine that embeds jQuery into the page based on a few application wide configuration settings. It returns only a string of the script tags that can be manually embedded into a Page template. It's a small function that merely a string of the script tags shown at the begging of this post along with some options on how that string is comprised. You'll be able to specify in one place which version loads and then all places where the help function is used will automatically reflect this selection. Options allow specification of the jQuery CDN Url, the fallback Url and where jQuery should be loaded from (script folder, Resource or CDN in my case). While this is specific to jQuery you can apply this to other resources as well. For example I use a similar approach with jQuery.ui as well using practically the same semantics. Providing Resources in ControlResources In my Westwind.Web Web utility library I have a class called ControlResources which is responsible for holding resource Urls, resource IDs and string contants that reference those resource IDs. The library also provides a few helper methods for loading common scriptscripts into a Web page. There are specific versions for WebForms which use the ClientScriptManager/ScriptManager and script link methods that can be used in any .NET technology that can embed an expression into the output template (or code for that matter). The ControlResources class contains mostly static content - references to resources mostly. You can see there's only a little bit of logic in this code that deals with potentially different load modes. I can load scripts from a Url, WebResources or - my preferred way - from CDN. Based on the static settings the scripts to embed are composed to be returned as simple string <script> tag(s). I find this extremely useful especially when I'm not connected to the internet so that I can quickly swap in a local jQuery resource instead of loading from CDN. While CDN loading with the fallback works it can be a bit slow as the CDN is probed first before the fallback kicks in. Switching quickly in one place makes this trivial. It also makes it very easy once a new version of jQuery rolls around to move up to the new version and ensure that all pages are using the new version immediately. I'm not trying to make this out as 'the' definite way to load your resources, but rather provide it here as a pointer so you can maybe apply your own logic to determine where scripts come from and how they load. You could even automate this some more by using configuration settings or reading the locations/preferences out of some sort of data/metadata store that can be dynamically updated instead via recompilation. FWIW, I use a very similar approach for loading jQuery UI and my own ww.jquery library - the same concept can be applied to any kind of script you might be loading from different locations. Hopefully some of you find this a useful addition to your toolset.   I have a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server for files and printers. It shares files via Samba just fine. However, the HP PSC-750xi connected to the server via USB is not accessible from my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop. I can browse for it in the Printing control panel, but any attempt to authenticate my ID to the printer with my user credentials results in the error "This print share is not accessible".
