• How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

  I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different.   Little heads up, Im the only lonely dev building/planning/mocking my project as I go. Ive come up with a preview release that does only the core aspects of the system, with good business value and I've coded most of the UI as dirty throw-able mockups over nicely abstracted and very minimal base code. In the end I know quite well what my clients want on the whole. I can't take agile-ish cowboying anymore because Im completely dis-organized and have no paper plan and since my clients are happy, things are getting more complex with more features and ideas. So I started using and learning Agile & Scrum Here are my problems: I know what a functional spec is.(sample): Do all user stories and/or scenarios become part of the functional spec? I know what user stories and tasks are. Are these kinda user stories? I dont see any Business Value reason added to them. I made a mind map using freemind, I had problems like this: Actor : Finance Manager Can Add a Financial Plan into the system because well thats the point of it? What Business Value reason do I add for things like this? Example : A user needs to be able to add a blog article (in the blogger app) because..?? Its the point of a blogger app, it centers around that feature? How do I go into the finer details and system definitions: Actor: Finance Manager Action: Adds a finance plan. This adding is a complicated process with lots of steps. What User Story will describe what a finance plan in the system is ?? I can add it into the functional spec under definitions explaining what a finance plan is and how one needs to add it into the system, but how do I get to the backlog planning from there? Example: A Blog Article is mostly a textual document that can be written in rich text in the system. To add a blog article one must...... But how do you create backlog list/features out of this? Where are the user stories for what a blog article is and how one adds/removes it? Finally, I'm a little confused about the relations between functional specs and user stories. Will my spec contain user stories in them with UI mockups? Now will these user stories then branch out tasks which will make up something like a technical specification? Example : EditorUser Can add a blog article. Use XML to store blog article. Add a form to add blog. Add Windows Live Writer Support. That would be agile tasks but would that also be part of/or form the technical specs? Some concrete examples/answers of my questions would be nice!!

• Addressing threats introduced by the BYOD trend

  With the growth of the mobile technology segment, enterprises are facing a new type of threats introduced by the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend, where employees use their own devices (laptops, tablets or smartphones) not necessarily secured to access corporate network and information.In the past - actually even right now, enterprises used to provide laptops to their employees for their daily work, with specific operating systems including anti-virus and desktop management tools, in order to make sure that the pools of laptop allocated are spyware or trojan-horse free to access the internal network and sensitive information. But the BYOD reality is breaking this paradigm and open new security breaches for enterprises as most of the username/password based systems, especially the internal web applications, can be accessed by less or none protected device.To address this reality we can adopt 3 approaches:1. Coué's approach: Close your eyes and assume that your employees are mature enough to know what he/she should or should not do.2. Consensus approach: Provide a list of restricted and 'certified' devices to the internal network. 3. Military approach: Access internal systems with certified laptop ONLYIf you choose option 1: Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you find the others entries more useful :)If you choose option 2: The proliferation of new hardware and software updates every quarter makes this approach very costly and difficult to maintain.If you choose option 3: You need to find a way to allow the access into your sensitive application from the corporate authorized machines only, managed by the IT administrators... but how? The challenge with option 3 is to find out how end-users can restrict access to certain sensitive applications only from authorized machines, or from another angle end-users can not access the sensitive applications if they are not using the authorized machine... So what if we find a way to store the applications credential secretly from the end-users, and then automatically submit them when the end-users access the application? With this model, end-users do not know the username/password to access the applications so even if the end-users use their own devices they will not able to login. Also, there's no need to reconfigure existing applications to adapt to the new authenticate scheme given that we are still leverage the same username/password authenticate model at the application level. To adopt this model, you can leverage Oracle Enterprise Single Sign On. In short, Oracle ESSO is a desktop based solution, capable to store credentials of Web and Native based applications. At the application startup and if it is configured as an esso-enabled application - check out my previous post on how to make Skype essso-enabled, Oracle ESSO takes over automatically the sign-in sequence with the store credential on behalf of the end-users. Combined with Oracle ESSO Provisioning Gateway, the credentials can be 'pushed' in advance from an actual provisioning server, like Oracle Identity Manager or Tivoli Identity Manager, so the end-users can login into sensitive application without even knowing the actual username and password, so they can not login with other machines rather than those secured by Oracle ESSO.Below is a graphical illustration of this approach:With this model, not only you can protect the access to sensitive applications only from authorized machine, you can also implement much stronger Password Policies in terms of Password Complexity as well as Password Reset Frequency but end-users will not need to remember the passwords anymore.If you are interested, do not hesitate to check out the Oracle Enterprise Single Sign-on products from OTN !

• C++ Windows Forms application unhandled exception error when textbox empty

  I'm building a temperature conversion application in Visual Studio for a C++ course. It's a Windows Forms application and the code that I've written is below. There's other code to of course, but I'm not sure you need it to help me. My problem is, when I run the application if I don't have anything entered into either the txtFahrenheit or txtCelsius2 textboxes I get the following error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.FormatException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" The application only works right now when a number is entered into both of the textboxes. I was told to try and use this: Double::TryParse() but I'm brand new to C++ and can't figure out how to use it, even after checking the MSDN library. • Labels mail merge repeats on subsequent pages?

  I'm trying to do a mail merge to print to labels. The first field in the document does not contain a { NEXT } field code, and because of this the records repeat between label pages for example: Notice how the records shift to the left as the next page is displayed? But how they start over again in an off by one manner? Now I've tried to fix this by using the first record displayed on a page to see if the page number is 1. If it not on page 1 of the mail merge then it should just move to the next record; otherwise it should just display the first record: This doesn't work however, because when I do the preview and display the {page} field code, it reports that I am always on page 1 and thus the same behavior continues instead of just moving to the next record on the next page.

• Automatically revert to laptop screen when external monitor unplugged

  I regularly use an external monitor with my laptop, so when I use it, I usually have the laptop screen disabled when the monitor is connected, and this seems to cause problems when the monitor is disconnected. If the monitor is connected while the laptop screen is disabled, I can't get the X session to show up at all: I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a terminal, and that works fine.. ..but Ctrl+Alt+F7 does nothing. The display is blank, and stays blank. The same thing happens whether I put the computer to sleep with the monitor connected, or if I disconnect while the computer is still awake. Rebooting the computer fixes the issue, as does killing Xorg and starting it again, but both of those are sub-optimal since I lose my current session. I'm currently using the open source graphics driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati). This question looks like it might answer my question, but unfortunately hwinfo is no longer available in the apt repository. Is there a way with current tools to automatically detect when the external monitor is disconnected and switch to the laptop display?

• Cinema4D for game development tutorials anyone ?

  Hi, I started to learn Cinema 4D. I've noticed it's really easy to use for motion graphics, but I want to use it for modeling for games/realtime 3d engines. Before I used 3dsmax and it was easy to estimate how a model would look/behave in a 3d engine. The two main things I did was displaying Polygon triangles and displaying the Polygon Count. I've found the Total Polygons tick in HUD settings in Cinema 4D, but I can't find any display mode that will show triangles. Is there there a way to display triangle faces/not quads in Cinema4D ? If so how ? There is a Triangulate function, but I'd rather not Triangulate/Untriangulate all the time, especially since it's converting back and forth between the two doesn't always produce the same result.

• Windows 7 Sub-Folders hidden in "Program Files" directory

  I have Google searched for an hour now and I am confounded. I am using InnoSetup to install a .NET Winforms application that creates directories and folders on the fly. (I have set the folder options to display hidden files, folders...) Although the files that are added to "created" folders appear within the application, they do not show when using Windows Explorer or even when issuing a Dir from a command prompt. I have also modified the application to display (and delete) the contents of these (seemingly imaginary) folders, so I am sure they exist. What am I missing?

• fdisk -l only displays boot partition

  I have a SAN, and it's able to read and write to the 50TB RAID just fine, but when I run fdisk -l it only lists the boot partition of the SAN server, and doesn't display anything about the other partitions on the RAID. I've also tried using parted -l with the same result. Now when I type mount it shows that the partitions are mounted just fine. I've never seen this happen. The box is running Openfiler 2.3 (I know it's old, we're in the process of upgrading all our old equipment). We have another SAN that's configured almost identically, and it's able to display the partition info with either of the two commands I mentioned above.

• Virtualbox fullscreen mode problem

  hi all I have a slightly weird issue with virtualbox. My host OS is Win7 (64-bit) and guest OS is Ubuntu 10.10(64-bit). When I switch to fullscreen mode in virtualbox, ubuntu display resizes to fit my screen size. however, after that the display is not updated. So if i click a menu or something I don't see it appear. but it seems to work in the background. if i click a menu in fullscreen mode, i don't see anything happen, but if then switch to windowed mode I see the menu already open. I have installed virtuabox guest additions. if any has a similar issue or has found a solution please let me know thanks.

  Hands-on Private Cloud Simulator In One Hour Submitted by: Doan Nguyen, Senior Principal Product Marketing Director My aeronautics instructor used to say, "you can’t appreciate flying until you take flight." To clarify, this is not about gearing up in a flying squirrel suit and hopping off a cliff (topic for another blog!) but rather about flying an airplane. The idea is to get hands-on with the controls at the cockpit and experience flight before you actually fly a real plane. After the initial 40 hours of flight time, the concept sank in and it really made sense.This concept is what inspired our technical experts to put together the hands-on lab for a private cloud deployment and management self-service model. Yes, we are comparing the lab to a flight simulator! Let’s look at the parallels: To get trained to fly, starting in the simulator gets you off the ground quicker. There is no need to have a real plane to begin with. In a hands-on lab, there is no need for a real server, with networking and real storage installed. All you need is your laptop The simulator is pre-configured, pre-flight check done. Similarly, in a hands-on lab, Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager are pre-configured and assembled using Oracle VM VirtualBox as the container. Software installations are not needed. After time spent training at the controls, you can really appreciate the practical experience of flying.   I asked this question in SuperUser one hour ago, then I know this community so I moved the question here... I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. • How to send a pipe with psexec?

  I'm trying to execute a pipe on a remote server by using psexec. The command that I'm trying to execute is psexec \\servername DSQUERY USER -name *userpart* | DSGET USER -samid -display Currently, the | pipe symbol get executed locally which is not what is wanted (since dsget does not exist on my machine). I tried to use quote around the whole command psexec \\servername "DSQUERY USER -name *userpart* | DSGET USER -samid -display" but that resulted in psexec trying to run that whole quoted sentence as one executable, which obviously does not exist. How can I pass a pipe symbol to the remote server so that it can execute it?
