• Desgining a database with flexible user profile

  Hi, Am working on a design where I can have flexible attributes for a user & am confused how to continue the design of the schema. I made a table where I kept system needed information called users id username password Now, I wish to create a profile table and have one to one relation where all the other attributes in profile table such as email, first name, last name..etc. My question is, is there a way to add a third table in which even profile will be flexible if my clients need to create a new attribute he/she won't need any customization to the code? • Java LinkedList iterator being exhausted prematurely

  I am using LinkedList and retrieving an Iterator object by using list.iterator(). After that, I am checking it.hasNext(), real issue is while checking it.hasNext(), sometimes it returns false.   I'm diving in to iPhone development and I'm building an iPhone app that uses the Core Data framework and my first task will be to get the model setup with a few that will display it. Thus far, I have the model defined and my Managed Object Files created, but I don't have a database with any sample data. What's a quick way to create a DB that conforms to my schema?   Hi guys, Had a look and found some things on this, but nothing seems to work as I'd like it. Initially I had my solution working with internet explorer and chrome, but not firefox (which is unsatisfactory for me to not have working) What I'm looking for is a simple text area, which sends data on enter key, but creates a new line on Shift+Enter. • In C# or .NET, is there a way to prevent other threads from invoking methods on a particular thread?

  I have a Windows Forms application with a BackgroundWorker. In a method on the main form, a MessageBox is shown and the user must click the OK button to continue. Meanwhile, while the messagebox is being displayed, the BackgroundWorker finishes executing and calls the RunWorkerCompleted event. In the method I have assigned to that event, which runs on the UI thread, the Close method is called on the form. Even though the method that shows the message box is still running, the UI thread is not blocking other threads from invoking methods on it. So the Close method gets called on the form. What I want is for the UI thread to block other threads' invokes until the method with the message box has finished. Is there an easy way to do that?

• PHP display progress messages on the fly

  Hi everyone, I am working in a tool in PHP that processes a lot of data and takes a while to finish. I would like to keep the user updated with what is going on and the current task processed. What is in your opinion the best way to do it? I've got some ideas but can't decide for the most effective one: The old way: execute a small part of the script and display a page to the user with a Meta Redirect or a JavaScript timer to send a request to continue the script (like /script.php?step=2). Sending AJAX requests constantly to read a server file that PHP keeps updating through fwrite(). Same as above but PHP updates a field in the database instead of saving a file. Does any of those sound good? Any ideas? Thanks!

• I set a global bug catcher in my application for unhandled exceptions and it is picking up all exceptions

  I am trying to figure out why this is happing. In my vb.net application I set a global handler in the ApplicationEvents.vb which I thought would only pick up any unhandled exceptions, although it is picking up every exception that happens in my application whether or not they are handled with try catch blocks.   Consider following situation, assuming single CPU system: thread A is running with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL, signals event E thread B with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST is waiting for an event E (Note: at this point the thread is not scheduled because it is runnable, but A is higher priority and runnable as well) thread A calls SetThreadPriority(B, THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL) Is thread B re-scheduled immediately to run, or is thread A allowed to continue until current time-slice is over, and B is scheduled only once a new time-slice has begun? I would be interested to know the answer for WinXP, Vista and Win7, if possible. Note: the scenario above is simplified from my real world code, where multiple threads are running on multiple cores, but the main object of the question stays: does SetThreadPriority cause thread scheduling to happen?

  I have to develop a new (desktop) app for a small business. This business currently has an Access database with millions of records. The file size is about 1.5 GB. The boss told me that searching on this DB is very slow. The DB consists of a single table with about 20 fields. I also think the overall DB design isn't great. I thought to use another DB server with a new design to improve both performance and efficiency. Considering this is a relatively small business, I don't want to spend much for a DB license, so I want to ask you what would you do.   Are you able to use open id to log into the local development server with google app engine sdk version 1.4.1 and python 2.5? When I execute this self.redirect(users.create_login_url(continue_url, None, openid_url)) I get redirected to http://localhost/_ah/login rather than the openid url. The openid url and continue url are valid. My app.yaml looks like this - url: /_ah/login_required script: do_openid_login.py - url: /users/(.*) script: routers/user_router.py login: required If I browse to http://localhost/users/ I am also redirected to http://localhost/_ah/login rather than http://localhost/_ah/login_required Is there a config issue or does openid not work locally?

• best way to use CoreLocation across multiple views

  I have two views in my app, one is a general view where CoreLocation works away calculating the users location while the user is doing other stuff in the view. The second view is accessed by the user when they touch a button allowing them to locate themselves more accurately using a mapview and MapKit, i would like the mapview in this view to show the location that CoreLocation has already identified in the first view AND to continue displaying this location based on updates from CoreLocation in the other view. Is the best way here to create a singleton that encapsulates the CoreLocation stuff and have this referenced in the view with the map, or to use notifications ? or to use some other better practice for my scenario ? • How to include file from seperate remote folder in Netbeans (PHP Development)

  I have a PHP project setup in Netbeans (v6.8) where all the PHP files are on a remote server and in a single directory. Whenever I save files locally they are updated on the remote server via SFTP. I now need to edit a remote JavaScript file to add some jQuery logic but the file is located within a different directory on the webserver. How to I add this JavaScript file such that when it is saved or updated it is transferred to it's own location on the server? When I attempt to create the file locally within NetBeans it saves to the same directory as my PHP files. I would like to be able to continue using NetBeans rather than doing this all manually using an SFTP client and a text editor. Thanks in advance.

  Hi there, I learned that when executing commands in Python, I should use subprocess. What I'm trying to achieve is to encode a file via ffmpeg and observe the program output until the file is done. Ffmpeg logs the progress to stderr.   I have looked through the API's of facebook and twitter but i cannot seem to find the answer to my question. On websites like http://punchfork.com/recipe/Porkitos-Crispy-Prosciutto-Chips-Nom-Nom-Paleo On the right hand side they have the social stats page with information such as Tweets, Facebook Shares and Stumbleupons. My question is how do they record or gather these results? Is it a case of they have a button that records it in their database then sends you to the page to tweet/share/stumble? But surely that couldn't be accurate as people might not continue to fill out the action.

• What is a better way to sort by a 5 star rating?

  I'm trying to sort a bunch of products by customer ratings using a 5 star system. The site I'm setting this up for does not have a lot of ratings and continue to add new products so it will usually have a few products with a low number of ratings. I tried using average star rating but that algorithm fails when there is a small number of ratings. Example a product that has 3x 5 star ratings would show up better than a product that has 100x 5 star ratings and 2x 2 star ratings. Shouldn't the second product show up higher because it is statistically more trustworthy because of the larger number of ratings?
