• serializing type definitions?

  I'm not positive I'm going about this the right way. I've got a suite of applications that have varying types of output (custom defined types). For example, I might have a type called Widget: Class Widget Public name as String End Class Throughout the course of operation, when a user experiences a certain condition, the application will take that output instance of widget that user received, serialize it, and log it to the database noting the name of the type. Now, I have other applications that do something similar, but instead of dealing with Widget, it could be some totally random other type with different attributes, but again I serialize the instance, log it to the db, and note the name of the type. I have maybe a half dozen different types and don't anticipate too many additional ones in the future. After all this is said and done, I have an admin interface that looks through these logs, and has the ability for the user to view the contents of this data thats been logged. The Admin app has a reference to all the types involved, and with some basic switch case logic hinged upon the name of the type, will cast it into their original types, and pass it on to some handlers that have basic display logic to spit the data back out in a readable format (one display handler for each type) NOW... all this is well and good... Until one day, my model changed. The Widget class now has deprecated the name attribute and added on a bunch of other attributes. I will of course get type mismatches in the admin side when I try to reconstitute this data. I was wondering if there was some way, at runtime, i could perhaps reflect through my code and get a snapshot of the type definition at that precise moment, serialize it, and store it along with the data so that I could somehow use this to reconstitute it in the future?

  I am new to SQuirrel SQL. I need some help to translating CCSID 65535 into ASCII, UNICODE (or anything human readable) I am using the JDBC driver per the following guide. According to IBM's website: What character conversion issues must my program deal with? The IBM i database uses EBCDIC to store text. Java uses Unicode. The JDBC driver handles all conversion between character sets, so your program should not have to worry about it. but I think they refer to CCSID 37 and not 65535(Hex). I have got the following info, from my DB2 DB Doing DSPFD gives me: Coded character set identifier . . . . . . : CCSID 65535 Doing DSPFFD gives me: TXT CHAR 3 3 41 Both Text Field text . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Text Coded Character Set Identifier . . . . . : 65535 But the SQuirrel query result for the TXT field is: 5c c1 c4 c4 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 c1 40 7e 40 c2 40 4e 40 c3 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 Which should be translated to something like: *ADD A = B + C

  I need send certain attributes(say, human readable user name) from server to client after a successful authentication. Server part was done. Now attribute was sent to client.   I've been evaluating technology stack for developing a social network based application. Below are the stack I think could well suitable for this application type of application: GUI -- ASP.NET MVC, Flash (Flex) Business Services -- Thrift based services One of the advantage of using Thrift is to solve scaling problems that will come in future when the user base increases rapidly. All the business logic can be exposed as a services using REST,JSON etc., This also allows us to go with C++ or Erlang based services when situation demands. Database -- mySQL, CasSandara mySQL can be used for storing the data which needs to be persisted. Cassandara will be used for storing global identifiers to the persisted data. Since Cassandara is also very good at scaling by introducing more nodes this will leverage Thrift based services as well. And also there is native support between Cassandara and Thrift Cache Server -- Memcached Any requests from Business Services will only talk to Memcached if any non-dirty data is required, otherwise there will be some background jobs that will invalidate the cache from database. The question is: Is the Thrift which is open-sourced one is production-ready? Is it the right stack for services layer to choose when the application (GUI) is primarily gets developed in ASP.NET and DB is mysql? Is there any other caveats that anyone here experienced? One of the main objective behind this stack is to easily scale up with more nodes and also this helps us to use Linux boxes, it will reduce our cost significantly Thoughts please ..

  I am having a string in CSV format. Please see my earlier question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2865861/parsing-csv-string-and-binding-it-to-listbox I can add new values to it by some mechanism. Everything will be same except the new values will have numeric part = 0. Take example I have this exsiting CSV string 1 , abc.txt , 2 , def.doc , 3 , flyaway.txt Now by some mechanism i added two more files Superman.txt and Spiderman.txt to the existing string. Now it became 1 , abc.txt , 2 , def.doc , 3 , flyaway.txt, 0, Superman.txt, 0 , Spiderman.txt What i am doing here is that this csv string is paased into SP where its splitted and inserted to db. • WF 4.0 can't get to resume workflow on the staging/production environment

  I have developed various registeration workflows using WF4.0. Each work flow has various bookmarks. I am using the registeration wf for an asp.net application. I tested the asp.net application locally and it is working fine( Starting WF, Persisting to db and resuming bookmarks). When I try to test it on the staging server, everything goes messy. • WPF Control validation

  Hi all, I'm developing a WPF GUI framework and have had bad experiences with two way binding and lots of un-needed events being fire(mainly in Flex) so I have gone down the route of having bindings (string that represent object paths) in my controls. When a view is requested to be displayed the controller loads the view, and gets the needed entities (using the bindings) from the DB and populates the controls with the correct values. This has a number of advantages i.e. lazy loading, default undo behaviour etc. When the data in the view needs to be saved the view is passed back to the controller again which basically does the reserve i.e. re-populates the entities from the view if values have changed. However, I have run into problems when I try and validate the components. Each entity has attributes on its properties that define validation rules which the controller can access easily and validate the data from the view against it. The actual validation of data is fine. The problem comes when I want the GUI control to display error validation information. It I try changing the style I get errors saying styles cannot be changed once in use. Is the a way in c# to fire off the normal WPF validation mechanism and just proved it with the validaiton errors the controller has found? Thanks in advance Jon

  I am trying to connect my application to a SQLite database with LINQ-to-SQL, and so far everything has worked fine. The only hitch was that the SQLite provider I am using does not support code generation (unless I was doing something wrong), so I manually coded the 4 tables in the DB. The solution builds properly, but will not run, giving me the error message Could not find key member 'ItemType_Id' of key 'ItemType_Id' on type 'Item'. The key may be wrong or the field or property on 'Item' has changed names. I have checked and double checked spellings and field names on the database and in the attribute mappings, but could not find any problems. • Question regarding the iPhone In App Purchase capabilities

  Hi everyone. I am working on releasing an app that will greatly benefit from using the in app purchase model. The app is a sort of book viewer, and the content I would like to make available for purchase will be more books in various languages. Each book is stored in sqlite format, in separate .db files. Now, the way that my developer has set it all up is that he added a line onto the bottom of the info.plist file called databases. Inside that database section, I can type in 'es' as the key, and for the value the name of the spanish database, and it populates in a uitableview in spanish, using NSLocale. So it is very easy to setup and implement different databases, which is great, but now I am confused about how I can implement my in app purchase model. Sorry about the long winded intro, here is my question: Is it possible to have an in app purchase add a line to my info.plist file? Or if not, is it possible to have the purchase reveal a new and updated plist file altogether that I would have already setup correctly? Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks

• passing timezone from client (GWT) to server (Joda Time)

  I'm using GWT on the client (browser) and Joda Time on the server. I'd like to perform some DB lookups bounded by the day (i.e. 00:00:00 until 23:59:59) that a request comes in, with the time boundaries based on the user's (i.e. browser) timezone. So I have the GWT code do a new java.util.Date() to get the time of the request, and send that to the server. Then I use Joda Time like so: new DateTime(clientDate).toDateMidnight().toDateTime() The trouble of course is that toDateMidnight(), in the absence of a specified TimeZone, will use the system's (i.e. the server's) TimeZone. I've been trying to find a simple way to pass the TimeZone from the browser to the server without much luck. In GWT I can get the GMT offset with: DateTimeFormat.getFormat("Z").fmt(new Date()) which results in something like "-0400". But Joda Time's DateTimeZone.forID() wants strings formatted like "America/New_York", or an integer argument of hours and minutes. Of course I can parse "-0400" into -4 hours and 0 minutes, but I'm wondering if there is not a more straightforward way of doing this.

  Hi, I find Yii great framework, and the example website created with yiic shell is a good point to start... however it doesn't cover the topic of multi-language websites, unfortunately. The docs covers the topic of translating short messages, but not keeping the multi-lingual content ... I'm about to start working on a website which needs to be in at least two languages, and I'm wondering what is the best way to keep content for that ... The problem is that the content is mixed extensively with common elements (like embedded video files). I need to avoid duplicating those commons ... so far I used to have an array of arrays containing texts (usually no more than 1-2 short paragraphs), then the view file was just rendering the text from an array. Now I'd like to avoid keeping it in arrays (which requires some attention when putting double quotations " " and is inconvenient in general...). So, what is the best way to keep those short paragraphs? Should I keep them in DB like (id | msg_id | language | content ) and then select them by msg_id & language? That still requires me to create some msg_id's and embed them into view file ... Is there any recommended paradigm for which Yii has some solutions? Thanks, m.

  I'm doing a Sphinx search but turning up some really weird results. Any help is appreciated. So for example if I type "50", I get: 50 Cent 50 Lions 50 Foot Wave, etc. This is great, but when I search "50 Ce", I get: Ryczace Dwudziestki Spisek Bernhard Gal Cowabunga Go-Go And other crazy results. Also when I search for "50 Cent", the correct result is at the top, but then random results below. Any ideas why?   I'm using an ADO.NET Entities (.edmx) data-model along with MVC2 to build an application. I have a DB table where I want to store settings for method that run elsewhere. MVC2 allows me to create a view, editor, etc. to update this table which is great, but now when I want to do simple assignments based on column titles I'm a bit confused. For example, I would like to easily build an array that I could offset into the record's value based on it's "Title" Column: var entities = new ManagerEntities(); Setting[] settings = entities.settings.ToArray(); This returns something like: Settings[0].[SettingTitle][SettingValue] However, I would like to more easily index into the value than having to loop through all the returned settings, when they're already index. string URL_ID_NEED = [NeededUrl][http://www.url.com] Am I missing something relatively simple? Now i just created new project (django 1.2.1) and have run into trouble from 1st moments. I created new app - game and new model Game. i created admin.py and put related stuff into it. Ran syncdb and went to check into admin. Model did not show up there. • When to use custom exceptions vs. existing exceptions vs. generic exceptions

  I'm trying to figure out what the correct form of exceptions to throw would be for a library I am writing. One example of what I need to handle is logging a user in to a station. They do this by scanning a badge. Possible things that could go wrong include: Their badge is deactivated They don't have permission to work at this station The badge scanned does not exist in the system They are already logged in to another station elsewhere The database is down Internal DB error (happens sometimes if the badge didn't get set up correctly) An application using this library will have to handle these exceptions one way or another. It's possible they may decide to just say "Error" or they may want to give the user more useful information. What's the best practice in this situation? Create a custom exception for each possibility? Use existing exceptions? Use Exception and pass in the reason (throw new Exception("Badge is deactivated.");)? I'm thinking it's some sort of mix of the first two, using existing exceptions where applicable, and creating new ones where needed (and grouping exceptions where it makes sense).

  I'm trying to construct a query to get the "average, maximum, minimum number of items purchased by a single user". • How to improve Java perfomance on Informix for Windows

  I have problem with performance of Java UDR functions on Informix on Windows. On this server I already have some functions in C and SPL. I chose one function to write it in those 3 languages and I measured performance of this function on test table. Function calculates some kind of checksum so it not use any db libraries etc. only string and math operations. I observed performance on 30k records with SQL like: select function(txt) from _tmp_perf_test and I changed function to 'function_c, function_spl or function_java. My performance tests showed that C function is the fastest, SPL function is about 5 times slower, where Java is 100 (one hundred!) times slower than C. I checked it few times and 1:100 ratio didn't improve. I changed Java function to simply return length of the string but even this do not help so it looks, that there is general problem with Java function invocation, because there was no difference in time between Java function that calculate checksum and Java function that returns length of the string. I increased JVM_MAX_HEAP_SIZE to 128 and it not helped too. I use IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.TC6DE. The same test on Linux server: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6 show more "normal" results, i.e. Java is slower from C and SPL but only 2 to 5 times. What can I do to improve Java performance on Informix server on Windows?
