  What I'm really asking is, in the current services and technologies provided, which is a more "useful" language? Which one has more opportunity? Some background info first. I'm a .net C# dev for 5 years. Having done a few projects on Amazon AWS, I'm looking to start a few projects of my own. But Azure's too expensive, and AWS has too much management overhead. My current choice is Google App Engine and Python. Logical enough. But what I want to ask here is this: In Linux world, which is more useful? Recently heard about Heroku for Ruby. How viable is this? Looking at the pricing model indicates that it's more expensive. Which one has more up-to-date and exciting open source projects? For instance Trac is just plain out dated compared to Redmine. One of the big reason pulling me for Ruby is Redmine. Implementations? IronPython/IronRuby/JRuby etc etc. Which one is more standardised and more implementation agnostic? Which one is easier to port between Windows/Linux? Anyway, your input and thoughts are greatly appreciated. thanks.

• Will a polled event system cause lag for a server?

  I'm using a library called ENet. It is a reliable UDP library. If I'm hosting say 75 event driven card games and a lobby on the same thread as this code, will it cause any problems. If my understanding is correct, the process will simply sleep until there is an event, when there is one, it will process the event then come back here where potentially 5 or so events have queued up since so enet_host_services would return right away and not cause lag. I have been advised not to use multiple threads, will that be alright like this? Thanks

I need to develop the WCF client. I need to use custom Message Formatter (for mapping between Messages and CLR types). • Nexus 7 Possibly Bricked

  I have a 1st gen Nexus 7 (32GB). I used the steps at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation to successfully install Ubuntu 13.04 desktop onto the tablet. It was working fine and then I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu Touch. I booted the tablet into fast boot mode but the commands 'adb devices' and 'sudo fastboot devices' would not see the device. I am performing these steps from an Ubuntu 12.04 desktop PC. Prior to installing 13.04 the device was seen fine. I made the mistake of performing the 'Device factory reset' step from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install - Step 2. Now when I try to boot the device I get the following: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /dev on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory Targe filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg. BusyBox v1.20.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.20.0-0ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter help for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I have searched the web but every reference to this problem is from people who still have ADB access to the device so they can recover by flashing the tablet again. I can attach a keyboard to the USB port and access the BusyBox console but I don't know what steps to do to recover from my error. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

• Requiring multithreading/concurrency for implementation of scripting language

  Here's the deal: I'm looking at designing my own scripting/interpreted language for fun. I'm only in the planning stages right now; I want to make sure I have a very strong hold on exactly how I will implement everything before I start coding. What I'm currently struggling with is concurrency. It seems to me like an easy way to avoid the unpredictable performance that comes with garbage collection would be to put the garbage collector in its own thread, and have it run concurrently with the interpreter itself. (To be clear, I don't plan to allow the scripts to be multithreaded themselves; I would simply put a garbage collector to work in a different thread than the interpreter.) This doesn't seem to be a common strategy for many popular scripting languages, probably for portability reasons; I would probably write the interpreter in the UNIX/POSIX threading framework initially and then port it to other platforms (Windows, etc.) if need be. Does anyone have any thoughts in this issue? Would whatever gains I receive by exploiting concurrency be nullified by the portability issues that will inevitably arise? (On that note, am I really correct in my assumption that I would experience great performance gains with a concurrent garbage collector?) Should I move forward with this strategy or step away from it?

• Reasonable technological solutions to create CRM using .NET eventually Java

  My background(If it's too long, just skip it please ; ) ): I am Java programmer(because of demand): mostly teacher for other students, worked on few thesis for others, but during my journey I discovered that .NET and Microsoft's tools are on at least two levels higher than Java and its tools so I want to learn more about them. I programmed little bit on Windows Phone(NFC Tags, TCP Clients, guitar tuner using internal microphone, simple RSS), used WPF, integrated WPF with Windows Forms, Apple Bonjour(.NET), I have expierience with IP cameras and with unusal problems, I learn Android, but I don't like it at all. Problem: I was asked by my friend to create CRM for small new company. There will maximum 20 workers in the company working at computers in few cities in the country(Poland). They just want to store contracts with the clients and client's data. I am not sure what exacly they do but probably sell apartments so there will be at most few thousands of contracts to store in far future. Now I am totally new to CRM but I want to learn. I have few questions: Should the data be stored on a server in the company's building running 24/7 or cloud. If cloud which one? Should I use ASPX or WPF. I read one topic about it but as far as I know aspx sites can be viewed from every device with internet browser: tablets, phones(Android, WP, iOS) and computers at the same time- so the job is done once and for all(Am I right?), I don't know nothing about aspx. Can WPF be also used in manner that does not need to port it for other platforms?

Here, he demonstrates how easy it is to develop the data layer of an application using Java EE, JPA, and the NetBeans IDE instead of the Spring Framework.In the first two parts of the series, he generated a complete Java EE application by using JavaServer Faces (JSF) 2.0, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.1, and Java Persistence API (JPA) 2.0 from Spring’s Pet Clinic MySQL schema, thus showing how easy it is to develop an application whose functionality equaled that of the Spring sample application.In his new article, Heffelfinger tweaks the application to make it more user friendly.From the article:“The generated application displays primary keys on some of the pages, and these keys are surrogate primary keys—meaning that they have no business value and are used strictly as a unique identifier—so there is no reason why they should be visible to the user.   I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. • Centrino Wireless-N 1000 takes forever to connect and keeps asking for password

  A few days ago I started having this problem. When I tried to connect to any WiFi Connection it would stay connecting forever, and after a minute or so it would ask me for the password again. The strange thing is that this happened out of nowhere, I did not install any new drivers or anything like that. After this happened I decided to uninstall ubuntu and install it again ("inside windows") but the problem is still there.   Did you ever wonder what this message in your GlassFish server.log file means? JMXStartupService has started JMXConnector on JMXService URL service:jmx:rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jndi/rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jmxrmi It means you can monitor any GlassFish server process, remotely or locally, using any standard Java Management Extensions (JMX) client.  Examples: jconsole or jvisualvm.   Copy the part of the log message that starts with "service:" into the Add JMX Connection dialog of jvisualvm:  or into the New Connection dialog of jconsole: (The full string is truncated in the on-screen display, but if you copied from the server.log and pasted into the form it should all be there.) The examples above are for a DAS, and your host will probably be different.   The server.log files for other GlassFish servers (instances) will have similar log entries giving the JMX connection string to use for those processes.  Look for the host and/or port to be different. Note a few things about security: Here we've assumed you are using the default admin username and password.  If you are not, just enter a valid admin username and password for your installation.  Once connected, you have normal access to all the JVM statistics and controls.   On ubuntu 12.04 i have some kind of problem with LTSP and LDAP. Sometimes I can log to the server, but sometimes I cant (window freezes on LDM) from thin client. Everything is ok when I log to the server like the local machine, but I have some kind of problem on thin client. pam_mkhomedir.so creates home dir, but i cant log..because Nothing happened - ldm freezes. This problem doesnt exist for "local" users (unix accounts) and on first logged LDAP user. It's important to mention that in log I can see nothing special. Does anybody have a problem with ltsp + ldap on ubuntu 12.04? • Having trouble with projection matrix, need help

  I'm having trouble with what appears to be the projection matrix. Given a wide enough of a screen, when a cube is on the left and right most edge, the left or right wall will appear stretched to the point that the front face is 1/10 the width of the side. So I do update the screen ratio along with the projection matrix and view port on screen resize, am I safe to assume all the trouble is from the matrix class? Also the cube follows the mouse, but it's only vertically aligned and ahead of the mouse when going left or right from the center of the screen. • 12.04 wired network doesn't work RTL8111/8168B

  its a fresh 12.04 install 64bits. wifi works fine, wired stays off with cable connected and network-manager shows as if cable is disconnected. Turning off networking lights up my network-cards leds, turning networking on shuts off the leds and no communication is possible. I already tried, turning off the network-manager (sudo service network-manager stop) and setting up my eth0 manually, as soon as I switch off the network-manager my leds light up, but after setting up manually eth0 (sudo ifconfig eth0 10.2.10.114 netmask 255.255.0.0 up) the leds turn off again. I am still dual booting with 10.04 where I have no issues at all, leaving the cable connected all time to my notebook and a switch. • Shared to Dedicated or Amazon CloudFront to improve performances and keep secured?

  I have a Wordpress which currently takes about 1.8s to 2.5s for the home page to completely load in my country. The page weight is about 700Ko (static content included). In order to increase performances, I'm considering two solutions: Switching to a dedicated host. Using amazon s3 cloudfront to serve static contents. My current shared hosting have servers in a neighboring country but not exactly in mine, and both amazon and the dedicated hosting have some, so that's already an advantage. So considering all that, I still have three questions remaining: Currently having a low traffic (100 unique visitors/days, but growing) will it make a huge difference between my shared hosting and a dedicated server ? Knowing that I already use a cookie-less domain to deliver static contents (but using a redirection to the same server), would using amazon s3 make a real difference ? Talking about the cons of dedicated vs amazon s3, if I choose for the dedicated server something like Ubuntu server and do daily package updates and have only port 80 open, would it be sufficient in terms of security (in comparison with my current shared hosting which manage everything for me) ?

  To continue the discussion in Why are pointers not recommended when coding with C++ Suppose you have a class that encapsulates objects which need some initialisation to be valid - like a network socket. // Blah manages some data and transmits it over a socket class socket; // forward declaration, so nice weak linkage. class blah { ... stuff TcpSocket *socket; } ~blah { // TcpSocket dtor handles disconnect delete socket; // or better, wrap it in a smart pointer } The ctor ensures that socket is marked NULL, then later in the code when I have the information to initialise the object. // initialising blah if ( !socket ) { // I know socket hasn't been created/connected // create it in a known initialised state and handle any errors // RAII is a good thing ! socket = new TcpSocket(ip,port); } // and when i actually need to use it if (socket) { // if socket exists then it must be connected and valid } This seems better than having the socket on the stack, having it created in some 'pending' state at program start and then having to continually check some isOK() or isConnected() function before every use. Additionally if TcpSocket ctor throws an exception it's a lot easier to handle at the point a Tcp connection is made rather than at program start. Obviously the socket is just an example, but I'm having a hard time thinking of when an encapsulated object with any sort of internal state shouldn't be created and initialised with new.

• How to make pulseaudio and ubuntu detect the same audio device as alsa driver

  I use Ubuntu 14.04 x64 and I use gnome-shell on my laptop. I have a Bose companion 5 (which is basically a USB sound system) and a HDMI port, both does work perfectly when I just boot with the cable plugin. However, when my laptop go to sleep or get unplugged from those two outputs, if I plug back the device, I end up without any hardware detection (only the built-in speakers) from pulse and gnome-shell sound output selector while if I use alsamixer, the device look up and ready. gstreamer-properties allow me to select and test effectively any device but while alsa recognize any device on the run, pulse is not capable of handling things correctly, my question is then: How can I make pulse detect and use the same hardware as alsa, or how to remove completely and gracefully pulseaudio (meaning volume applet running in gnome shell) I don't mind if the project implies to recompile half gnome shell if it implies those audio outputs work all the time. Pulse does not list my soundcard when I use command pactl list cards while the module plug&play for sound card is loaded in pactl list modules. I really don't know what to do, the behavior seems pretty random.

  Sorry for the cryptic title. Not sure how to phrase it. This is it in a nutshell: I'm running a 22-disk setup, 19 of those in a ZFS array, 15 of those backed by three port multipliers attached to SATA controllers driven by the sata_sil24 module. When running full speed (SATA2, i.e. 3 Gbps), the operation is pretty quirky (simple read errors will throw an entire PMP into spasms for a long time, sometimes with pretty awful results). Booting with kernel parameter libata.force=1.5G to force SATA controllers into "legacy" speeds completely fixes all issues with the PMPs. Thing is, my ZFS pool is backed by a fast cache SSD on my ICH10R controller. Another SSD on this same controller holds the system. Doing libata.force=1.5G immediately shaves about 100 MB/s off the transfer rate of my SSDs. For the root drive, that's not such a big deal, but for the ZFS cache SSD, it is. It effectively makes the entire zpool slower for sustained transfers than it would've been without the cache drive. Random access and fs tree lookups, of course still benifit. I'm hoping, though, that there's some way to pass the .force=1.5G parameter on to just the three SATA controllers being backed by the sata_sil24 module. But listing the module options for this, no such option exists. Is this possible? And if so, how? Thanks :)
