  • How can I create a simple Exchange 2010 backup solution?

    I'm sure this question's been asked a dozen times in one form or another, however after much searching, there doesn't appear to be an obvious simple recovery solution for a single Exchange box. We're using Exchange 2010 on a single server, the server hosts the AD and nothing else on the network uses the AD. The intent is to run this server as you would an externally hosted Exchange server - access only via HTTP (RPC mode or OWA) - all other ports blocked. I've a daily backup running, using Windows Server 2008 volume shadow service to backup the Exchange data to an external hard disk. My question is, how do I perform a bare metal recovery of this server? 1) Do I need to be explicitly including the active directory information in this nightly backup, or will it be there by virtue of the fact that this system is the primary AD server and the Windows backup service knows this? 2) I understand I can re-install Server 2008 onto my new hardware (in the case of hardware failure) and then run Exchange 2010 setup.exe with a /recover argument, referencing the backup volume. 3) It is acceptable to have some downtime during this recovery process. But is there anything else I should be aware of? Thanks! Duncan

    When using Powershell to set Out-of-Office in Exchange 2007 (e.g.), do multiple commands containing -StartTime and -EndTime add to some internal list that Exchange maintains or does each successive command replace the previous command? For example we have a staffer who is only in the office Tuesdays and Fridays. We'd like to set up Exchange to send an Out-of-Office message to all internal senders on those days when he's not in. How is this best done?

  • If an old Exchange server is not part of a domain, does that imply that it can be safely removed without affecting mailflow?

    We are doing some cleanup, and there is an old Exchange VM hanging around that we want to get rid of. We do not have the local admin credentials, but we can ascertain that it is not part of the current domain. Seeing as the new production Exchange server is working fine, is it safe to power off and remove the old server? *I should probably note that this is not an Edge Transport server. There was an upgrade to Exchange 2013 at some point in the past, and there is only one functioning Exchange server now.

    Is there a way to keep Exchange 2013 from converting HTML message bodies of incoming messages into RTF? I'm looking at a message that was sent to an Exchange 2013 user that has this at the top of the message body (PR_RTF_COMPRESSED): {*\generator Microsoft Exchange Server;} {*\formatConverter converted from html;} The message body is in pure RTF. I expect to see HTML wrapped in RTF, which is what I want. I've looked at "Set-MailUser -Identity blah -UseMapiRichTextFormat Never", but that doesn't work for a user with an Exchange mailbox and I think it only applies to outgoing mail anyway.

All users are in the same OU and the exchange 2003 server has sp2 installed. Anyone might know why this is? Update: I figured out that if I disable and re-enable the Outlook Mobile Access setting for each user, the msExchOmaAdminWirelessEnable attribute shows up again for those users missing that attribute...weird..

    I'm writing a new ASP.NET MVC2 application using Linq to SQL. This application depends on an existing SQL database. I am using attribute-based mapping to map my database fields to my Linq to SQL entities. I also need to make use of Linq to SQL's On[Property]Changed methods so I can perform change-auditing of database tables within my application. Whereas the documentation explains how to do this when using Linq to SQL's ORM and dbml files (i.e. by writing partial classes), it is not clear how to do with when using attribute-based mapping or when using XML-based mapping. It would be very helpful if someone could describe how to do this.

    I have a news feed where items in the feed are created from JSON returned from a server. When the user takes an action on an item, I want to remove it from the object via javascript.   • Large mailbox in Outlook 2007 takes ages to index

    In our company each user has a single mailbox and all email they have ever sent/received is in that mailbox. We don't do archiving to PST and we thought that was the way forward. The problem we now have is if someone switches to another PC for the day and opens Outlook, it has to download all emails first to that PC (cached mode) but even then when they try to search for something, Outlook says items are still being indexed. One user has over 100,000 items to be indexed and it's been saying that for about a week! As a temporary workaround I have turned off instant searching which allows them to search for anything, but it takes time to filter through, and Outlook doesn't exactly indicate if it's still searching for something, so in most cases the user thinks the search isn't working when really it is and it's just taking time to populate the results. I need a solution that allows the mailbox to be indexed really quickly if the user has to login to another PC. Are we best using Online Mode instead of Cached Mode or is there another way around this? Thanks in advance.

  • SBS 2008 - Add user not seeing AD users (reconnecting or creating new mailbox)

    Using SBS 2008 - completely updated. I was originally trying to create a spam mailbox for quarantine purposes, and when I bring up the "select an existing user" it does not display any of the domain users (other than QB database user accounts installed on their server). I have tried changing the scope and still nothing. Searching reveals nothing either. Then later I noticed that we had (1) disconnected mailbox, and I tried to reconnect it to the AD user - and I got the same results. Help would be much appreciated.

However I run into errors all the time. the command I am executing is Export-Mailbox -Identity MAILBOX_FROM -TargetMailbox ARCHIVE -TargetFolder ARCHIVE_FOLDER -StartDate 2009-02-01 -EndDate 2009-02-28 -DeleteContent -Confirm:$false I can copy/move some messages, but run into frequent "an unknown error has occurred" (statuscode -1056749164) I run the console as administrative user, and all permissions are set right, as far as I can tell. I've restricted the start and end dates in case the number of messages moved/deleted should create problems. Anything I am missing in my setup? Corrupted messages? Over-limit message sizes?

  • How to give everyone access to a office@companyname address and let everyone see what messages were

    This should be simple (because I assume everyone has this problem) but googling and searching of serverfault didn't help much. I'd like all messages sent to our "office@companyname" to be visible by everyone and I'd like anyone to be able to respond. I also need everyone to at least SEE that a given message has already been answered (the ability to see the actual response would be nice). I tried using an shared folder for this but it fails miserably because replying to emails leaves no trace, not even for the user that actually sent the message. I'm open to any kind of solution, even commercial add-on solutions.

Update: What I've learnt so far, is that folder with more than approx 3000 messages will generate errors. If mail retention is set (default 30 days), Export-Mailbox will scan all messages whether these were deleted in previous runs or not, and date restriction to limit number of messages will not work. To avoid errors, I've switched off deleted message retention for the mailbox, and moved the messages from one large folder to multiple folders, and moved these one by one...

    Imagine two users A and B.User B has editor rights on mailbox A via delegation. Delegation settings: User A should not receive any invitation (calendar appointments). All should be routed to user B. It works fine when you are connected to mailbox via Outlook. Problem is that sometimes it does not work when user is connected via his iPhone (he receives calendar appointments in inbox). I know that this feature for MS products and therefore it works on MS Outlook. But user A told me that it worked in the past also on iPhone with user C. Problem is that nowadays it does not work perfectly for user B. Do you have any suggestion please? Thank you in advance.

  • Get Active Directory Attributes for Users on Legacy Exchange Servers

    I would like to create a CSV file of the users on our Exchange 2003 servers, and include some attributes from their AD account. In particular, I would like to pull certain AD values for the users with RecipientTypeDetails = LegacyMailbox. I have tried a few different methods for targeting and filtering (ldapfilter, filter, objectAttribute, etc.) these users, with little success. The Exchange 2003 PowerPack for PowerGUI was helpful, but permissions issues and using the Exchange_Mailbox class are not challenges I want to overcome. I was finally able to create a working script, but it is very slow. The script I've created below is currently working, although it is on track to take about 4+ hours to complete. I'm am looking for suggestions for improving the efficiency of my script or otherwise obtaining this data in a quicker manner.     We have an xml node "item" with an attribute "style", which is "Header1". This style can change however. We have an attribute set named Header1 which defines how this should look in a PDF, generated through xsl:fo. This works (the use-attribute-sets is mentioned inline, in the fo:table-cell node): <xsl:template match="item[@type='label']"> <fo:table-row> <fo:table-cell xsl:use-attribute-sets="Header1"> <fo:block> <fo:inline font-size="8pt" > <xsl:value-of select="." /> </fo:inline> </fo:block> </fo:table-cell> </fo:table-row> </xsl:template> But this doesn't (using xsl:attribute, because the attribute @style can also be Header2 for example).
