  • Eject disk on Mac Pro running VMWare ESXi

    I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I'm stuck. I installed VMWare ESXi on a Mac Pro. It's working great! The problem is that you press F12 to eject the disk, and F12 is what you use to shutdown ESX. I can power down, open the case, pull out the CD drive and use a paper clip to force the drawer open, but that's kind of a pain. Any other way to do this?

  • How can I make photo CDs from iPhoto

    I have a new Macbook, don't know the OS, but just got it--it's the cheaper model. I saved a lot of photos on iPhoto and can't figure out how to burn a CD. Tried the "share" function and when I choose a location to save the photos and hit burn, get an error message that says can't create in that location. Needs to be run on a pc or photo processing place.

  • Toshiba laptop cd drive read causes OS to totally freeze

    Okay I'll try to write an understandable summary. Forgive me if I'll fail with that attempt though. So. There is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Got Windows 7 x86 Professional (OEM) installed on it, everything is fine (okay.. somewhat). The problem. If you put an audio or any kind of disc into the drive, something starts to eat the PC. Back then when the owner told me about this, he put an audio disc into the lappy. Winamp caused the IO load, 100%. Tried taskkill, taskkill /T, tried powershell, EVERYTHING. You just can NOT kill winamp or anything which becomes the blocker at that time. Even if you kill almost everything, laptop won't do a clear shutdown. Also I tried to use the force switch at 'shutdown' from cmd, but no use. (So: At these times you can use the laptop, but the blocker/explorer/disc becomes gray as a non-responding app. You can try to kill them, but that won't work, nor you can shutdown the machine). (Also tried using PID, but no use. For the highest IO I used the "select columns" from Task Manager and enabled the IO columns.) My first hunch was the problematic disc, autoplay and it tries to read tries to read (still shouldn't kill the PC). Disabled autoplay, removed winamp. Tried other software, etc. Everything was ok. Few days later the owner tried to put a disc into the machine and it started to reproduce the same symptoms but with a totally different disc. Uhm what to know. Virus is not an option, protected by BitDefender (valid license) and Spybot. Thanks if you have ANY idea about this strange problem. ps.: For now, the owner uses Daemon tools + Blindwrite as an alternative for those apps which wouldnt start without the disc.

  • Mac OS X CD ripping speed

    I am using vobcopy (installed via macports) to rip DVDs on a mac. I have been doing this for a while on linux with no problems. On the mac however, it is VERY slow. I am guessing that somehow the DVD drive is being limited to 1x in order to keep noise and power consumption down during playback. Is there a way to over ride this? Update: It is MUCH slower than 1x. It has taken me about an hour to copy 300MB Notes: While I appreciate all suggestions, I am not looking for "Have you tried HandBrake?". I am looking for a solution to copy the contents of a DVD, not transcode them. Also, I am launching vobcopy from an apple script that gets executed on DVD insertion, so a GUI solution is not desirable.

Is it possible to reference other locations. So that I could boot from it, without limitations. because the flash drive can only contain 8gb of data. Is it possible? Anyone here tried this before?

  • Software to copy non-duplicate files from CD/DVD

    I have several CDs/DVDs which have partially overlapping content (the overlapping files are identical, but have different names), and some of the files are on my hard disk. I need to get the remaining unique files copied to my hard disk. I found a really good duplicate file finder, Duplicate Cleaner, which lets you select multiple folders and then finds duplicates by checksum (or file name, size, date) and is very fast, and free. It won't help me do what I want though, unless I just copied everything, and then deleted the duplicates - but I would have to do multiple cycles, as I don't have room to copy all the CDs/DVDs to my hard disk. I found a couple of file sync programs, but they don't have the compare function - the file names must match. (I tried other duplicate file finders on CNET, but they aren't as good as Duplicate Cleaner, and also don't have the functionality I need.) Thanks for any help.

    If I've got a folder structure that I'd like to split so that it could be burned to multiple CDs or DVDs, what's the best tool out there to accomplish this? The folders/files have to be natively accessible once the split is done (no compression or physical splitting that would require a later join), and the folder structure should still remain intact as it spaces discs. Any ideas?

  • All terminal commands (like ls, cd, edit, open) are returning errors on my Mac

    From what I can tell from reading other questions/answers is that my .bash_profile file may be corrupt. If I type echo $PATH in terminal the result is: /usr/local/git/bin From what I've read, that's not what the result is supposed to be. But I also can't get any of the commands (like edit or subl, for Sublime Text 2) to open the .bash_profile file to edit it. I was able to open the file in TextEdit using "cmd-shift-.", and here's what's in the file: [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" PATH=$PATH:~/bin export PATH export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin But the file is LOCKED, so I can't edit it there either. I'm very new to programming and in the middle of trying to install everything on my Mac to go through a Ruby on Rails tutorial. I can't even check my version of ruby, since even ruby -v returns -bash: ruby: command not found Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Suppose I want to burn just the 6000th byte(if thats not possible say the 10th sector) on a CDR without touching anyother region. Sounds possible but is there any tool to accomplish this. Yeah sure, there may be no clear point doing this but is this possible technically?. (Doesnt matter maintaining the CDFS, integrity or whatever standard here. Just the task.)   • Script to copy files on CD and not on hard disk to a new directory

    I need to copy files from a set of CDs that have a lot of duplicate content, with each other, and with what's already on my hard disk. The file names of identical files are not the same, and are in sub-directories of different names. I want to copy non-duplicate files from the CD into a new directory on the hard disk. I don't care about the sub-directories - I will sort it out later - I just want the unique files. I can't find software to do that - see my post at SuperUser http://superuser.com/questions/129944/software-to-copy-non-duplicate-files-from-cd-dvd Someone at SuperUser suggested I write a script using GNU's "find" and the Win32 version of some checksum tools. I glanced at that, and have not done anything like that before. I'm hoping something exists that I can modify. I found a good program to delete duplicates, Duplicate Cleaner (it compares checksums), but it won't help me here, as I'd have to copy all the CDs to disk, and each is probably about 80% duplicates, and I don't have room to do that - I'd have to cycle through a few at a time copying everything, then turning around and deleting 80% of it, working the hard drive a lot.     Okay, here's a weird problem -- My wife just bought a 2014 Nissan Altima. So, I took her iTunes library and converted the .m4a files to .mp3, since the car audio system only supports .mp3 and .wma. So far so good. Then I copied the files to a DOS FAT-32 formatted USB thumb drive, and connected the drive to the car's USB port, only to find all of the tracks were out of sequence. All tracks begin with a two digit numeric prefix, i.e., 01, 02, 03, etc. So you would think they would be in order. So I called Nissan Connect support and the rep told me that there is a known problem with reading files in the correct order. He said the files are read in the same order they are written. So, I manually copied a few albums with the tracks in a predetermined order, and sure enough he was correct. So I copied about 6 albums for testing, then changed to the top level directory and did a "find . music.txt". Then I passed this file to rsync like this: rsync -av --files-from=music.txt . ../Marys\ Music\ Sequenced/ The files looked like they were copied in order, but when I listed the files in order of modified time, they were in the same sequence as the original files: ../Marys Music Sequenced/Air Supply/Air Supply Greatest Hits ls -1rt 01 Lost In Love.mp3 04 Every Woman In The World.mp3 03 Chances.mp3 02 All Out Of Love.mp3 06 Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You).mp3 05 The One That You Love.mp3 08 I Want To Give It All.mp3 07 Sweet Dreams.mp3 11 Young Love.mp3 So the question is, how can I copy files listed in a file named music.txt, and copy them to a destination, and ensure the modification times are in the same sequence as the files are listed?

    I'm sick of screwing around trying to script a clean solution to burn multiple files and folders to CDs and DVDs with wodim, growisofs and genisoimage. I'm looking for a high level command line program that uses sensible defaults and takes arguments something like this: [program-name] [cd|dvd] /path/to/dir1/ /path/to/dir2/ /path/to/file ... It should then do all the low level copying and ISO generation transparently and just burn the damn disk! Does anyone have any suggestions? I've looked at several programs but it seems there are too many choices to trawl through and not enough information about them online. Thanks :)

    The OpenAL API states that an setting an offset still causes the sound to loop back to zero for looping sources. But is there a way to loop and still have an offset somehow? I have an mp3, and since it contains headers with information at the start of the file, there's a small, but noticable, delay in looping when it rewinds. If not, are there any other compressed formats that don't contain these empty headers?
