  • Information on 50% drop in spam starting Christmas 2010

    - by George Bailey
Has anybody who administers email servers or spam filtering noticed that in last couple of weeks the spam volume has dropped significantly? Is there a chart provided by one of the major spam filtering companies? Edit: Based on our internal stats, although it varies, on the two weeks starting the day after Christmas (Sunday), spam seems to be coming in about half as much as it did before Christmas.

  • Set automatic axis limits without defaulting to zero (Excel)

    - by djeidot
I am build a bar chart in Excel with data values ranging from e.g. 10 to 20. I want the X axis limits to be automatic, but although the right limit (near 20) works correctly, the left limit always defaults to 0. I'd like the left limit to be near 10, instead of zero, without having to have the limit fixed. Is there any way to do this?

  • Hashed pattern in bargraphs - MS excel

    - by user1189851
I am drawing graphs for a paper that supports only black and white graphs. I need to show more than 3 histograms and want to have different patterns on them like hash, dotted, double hashed etc instead of different colors in the legend. I am using MS Excel 2007. I tried but dont find a way except for the option available in design tab that I find when I double click on the chart area( These are shades of grey color and I want patterns like hashing, dots etc). Thanks in advance,

  • PHP: Strange behaviour while calling custom php functions

    - by baltusaj
    I am facing a strange behavior while coding in PHP with Flex. Let me explain the situation: I have two funcions lets say: populateTable() //puts some data in a table made with flex createXML() //creates an xml file which is used by Fusion Charts to create a chart Now, if i call populateTable() alone, the table gets populated with data but if i call it with createXML(), the table doesn't get populated but createXML() does it's work i.e. creates an xml file. Even if i run following code, only xml file gets generated but table remains empty whereas i called populateTable() before createXML(). Any idea what may be going wrong? MXML Part <mx:HTTPService id="userRequest" url="request.php" method="POST" resultFormat="e4x"> <mx:request xmlns=""> <getResult>send</getResult> </mx:request> and <mx:DataGrid id="dgUserRequest" dataProvider="{userRequest.lastResult.user}" x="28.5" y="36" width="525" height="250" > <mx:columns> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="No." dataField="no" /> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Name" dataField="name"/> <mx:DataGridColumn headerText="Age" dataField="age"/> </mx:columns> PHP Part <?php //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- function initialize($username,$password,$database) //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { # Connect to the database $link = mysql_connect("localhost", $username,$password); if (!$link) { die('Could not connected to the database : ' . mysql_error()); } # Select the database $db_selected = mysql_select_db($database, $link); if (!$db_selected) { die ('Could not select the DB : ' . mysql_error()); } // populateTable(); createXML(); # Close database connection } //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- populateTable() //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { if($_POST['getResult'] == 'send') { $Result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM session" ); $Return = "<Users>"; $no = 1; while ( $row = mysql_fetch_object( $Result ) ) { $Return .= "<user><no>".$no."</no><name>".$row->name."</name><age>".$row->age."</age><salary>". $row->salary."</salary></session>"; $no=$no+1; $Return .= "</Users>"; mysql_free_result( $Result ); print ($Return); } //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- createXML() //-------------------------------------------------------------------------- { $users=array ( "0"=>array("",0), "1"=>array("Obama",0), "2"=>array("Zardari",0), "3"=>array("Imran Khan",0), "4"=>array("Ahmadenijad",0) ); $selectedUsers=array(1,4); //this means only obama and ahmadenijad are selected and the xml file will contain info related to them only //Extracting salaries of selected users $size=count($users); for($i = 0; $i<$size; $i++) { //initialize temp which will calculate total throughput for each protocol separately $salary = 0; $result = mysql_query("SELECT salary FROM userInfo where name='$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][0]'"); $row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) $salary = $row['salary']; } $users[$selectedUsers[$i]][1]=$salary; } //creating XML string $chartContent = "<chart caption=\"Users Vs Salaries\" formatNumberScale=\"0\" pieSliceDepth=\"30\" startingAngle=\"125\">"; for($i=0;$i<$size;$i++) { $chartContent .= "<set label=\"".$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][0]."\" value=\"".$users[$selectedUsers[$i]][1]."\"/>"; } $chartContent .= "<styles>" .   • Visual History for Chrome Maps Out Your Browser History in an Interactive Graph

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Curious how your adventures on the web interweave? Visual History for Chrome maps out related web sites in your browsing history into an interactive chart–visualize your browsing over the last hours, days, or months. One of the interesting elements of Visual History is that it doesn’t simply link sites together via activated hyperlinks but by consecutive use within 20 minute increments–thus if you frequently hit up Gmail, Facebook, and Reddit first thing in the morning, they’ll all appear together in a usage cluster. Site can be organized by URL, sub-domain, or domain. Visual History is free, Chrome only. • Oracle Business Intelligence integration with Oracle Open Office

    - by Harald Behnke
A highlight of the latest Oracle Office product launches are the first Oracle application connectors introduced with Oracle Open Office 3.3. The Oracle Open Office Connector for Oracle Business Intelligence perfectly demonstrates the advantages of enterprise and office productivity software engineered to work together. The connector enables you to access and run Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition requests directly within Oracle Open Office. The refreshable requests leverage not only native Open Office functionality but also the scalability and performance of the Oracle Oracle Business Intelligence server (R10.x). The requests reference a single source of information as defined in the Oracle Business Intelligence server data thus ensuring consistent information across the enterprise. • Tool to export Microsoft project to website?

    - by Rory
Just wondering does anyone know of a free/open source tool that take a Microsoft project file and export it to HTML? I know you can save a project file as HTML, so wanted a tool that would do this automatically? Maybe also displaying graphs/gantt chart as well? If not, any ideas of how I would write a program to do this, preferably in java? I know of Aspose.Tasks (http://www.aspose.com/categories/.net-components/aspose.tasks-for-.net/default.aspx), which can export projects files to gantt charts in png format, but it's not free and is only available in C#.

  • Code Metrics: Number of IL Instructions

    - by DigiMortal
In my previous posting about code metrics I introduced how to measure LoC (Lines of Code) in .NET applications. Now let’s take a step further and let’s take a look how to measure compiled code. This way we can somehow have a picture about what compiler produces. In this posting I will introduce you code metric called number of IL instructions. NB! Number of IL instructions is not something you can use to measure productivity of your team. If you want to get better idea about the context of this metric and LoC then please read my first posting about LoC. What are IL instructions? When code written in some .NET Framework language is compiled then compiler produces assemblies that contain byte code. These assemblies are executed later by Common Language Runtime (CLR) that is code execution engine of .NET Framework. The byte code is called Intermediate Language (IL) – this is more common language than C# and VB.NET by example. You can use ILDasm tool to convert assemblies to IL assembler so you can read them. As IL instructions are building blocks of all .NET Framework binary code these instructions are smaller and highly general – we don’t want very rich low level language because it executes slower than more general language. For every method or property call in some .NET Framework language corresponds set of IL instructions. There is no 1:1 relationship between line in high level language and line in IL assembler. There are more IL instructions than lines in C# code by example. How much instructions there are? I have no common answer because it really depends on your code. Here you can see some metrics from my current community project that is developed on SharePoint Server 2007. As average I have about 7 IL instructions per line of code. This is not metric you should use, it is just illustrative example so you can see the differences between numbers of lines and IL instructions. Why should I measure the number of IL instructions? Just take a look at chart above. Compiler does something that you cannot see – it compiles your code to IL. This is not intuitive process because you usually cannot say what is exactly the end result. You know it at greater plain but you don’t know it exactly. Therefore we can expect some surprises and that’s why we should measure the number of IL instructions. By example, you may find better solution for some method in your source code. It looks nice, it works nice and everything seems to be okay. But on server under load your fix may be way slower than previous code. Although you minimized the number of lines of code it ended up with increasing the number of IL instructions. How to measure the number of IL instructions? My choice is NDepend because Visual Studio is not able to measure this metric. Steps to make are easy. Open your NDepend project or create new and add all your application assemblies to project (you can also add Visual Studio solution to project). Run project analysis and wait until it is done. You can see over-all stats form global summary window. This is the same window I used to read the LoC and the number of IL instructions metrics for my chart. Meanwhile I made some changes to my code (enabled advanced caching for events and event registrations module) and then I ran code analysis again to get results for this section of this posting. NDepend is also able to tell you exactly what parts of code have problematically much IL instructions. The code quality section of CQL Query Explorer shows you how much problems there are with members in analyzed code. If you click on the line Methods too big (NbILInstructions) you can see all the problematic members of classes in CQL Explorer shown in image on right. In my case if have 10 methods that are too big and two of them have horrible number of IL instructions – just take a look at first two methods in this TOP10. Also note the query box. NDepend has easy and SQL-like query language to query code analysis results. You can modify these queries if you like and also you can define your own ones if default set is not enough for you. What is good result? As you can see from query window then the number of IL instructions per member should have maximally 200 IL instructions. Of course, like always, the less instructions you have, the better performing code you have. I don’t mean here little differences but big ones. By example, take a look at my first method in warnings list. The number of IL instructions it has is huge. And believe me – this method looks awful. Conclusion The number of IL instructions is useful metric when optimizing your code. For analyzing code at general level to find out too long methods you can use the number of LoC metric because it is more intuitive for you and you can therefore handle the situation more easily. Also you can use NDepend as code metrics tool because it has a lot of metrics to offer.

  • Web application Project management methodologie

    - by dutchiexl
I am looking to streamline my company's web development process. Including analysis. I myself am specialized in XP and Scrum. But we are building web application with a process cycle of 3-4 weeks and a lifetime of 1-4 months. When a project is sold, only then the project managers (= people who do analysis but know nothing about it = a small flow chart and some screen shots as analysis) What is happening is: A LOT of change requests Minimal development time Minimal analysis time NOW: the main question :) can you recommend me some methodologies and books to read for the entire project management ? Thanks in advance @Edit, I myself was looking at a combination of SCRUM for the management with flowcharts, + RAD/LD for development, and trying to distilate something from that.

  • Is there a rule of thumb for what a bing map's zoom setting should be based on how many miles you want to display?

    - by Clay Shannon
If a map contains pushpins/waypoints that span only a couple of miles, the map should be zoomed way in and show a lot of detail. If the pushpins/waypoints instead cover vast areas, such as hundreds or even thousands of miles, it should be zoomed way out. That's clear. My question is: is there a general guideline for mapping (no pun intended) Bing Maps zoom levels to a particular number of miles that separate the furthest apart points? e.g., is there some chart that has something like: Zoom level N shows 2 square miles Zoom level N shows 5 square miles etc.?

  • Should I rely on externally-hosted services?

    - by Mattis
I am wondering over the dangers / difficulties in using external services like Google Chart in my production state website. With external services I mean them that you can't download and host on your own server. (-) Potentially the Google service can be down when my site is up. (+) I don't have to develop those particular systems for new browser technologies, hopefully Google will do that for me. (-) Extra latency while my site fetch the data from the google servers. What else? Is it worth spending time and money to develop my own systems to be more in control of things?

  • Why do business analysts and project managers get higher salaries than programmers? [closed]

    - by jpartogi
We have to admit that programming is much more difficult than creating documentation or even creating Gantt chart and asking progress to programmers. So for us that are naives, knowing that programming is generally more difficult, why do business analysts and project managers get higher salary than programmers? What is it that makes their job a high paying job when even at most times programmers are the ones that go home late? UPDATE Excuse my ignorance, from some of the response it seems that the reason why BAs and PMs gets higher salary because they are the ones that usually responsible for the mess programmers make. But at the end of the day, it is programmers that get their hands dirty to fix the mess and work harder. So it still does not make sense.

  • How to change the sprite colors

    - by Mr_Qqn
In my rhythm game, I have a note object which can be of different colors depending on the note chart. I could use a sprite sheet with all the different color variations I use, but I would prefer to parametrize this. (For information, a note sprite is compound with one main color, for example a red note has only red, light red and dark red.) So, how to change the colors of a sprite basing on a new color ? I'm working with opengl, but any algorithm or math explanation will do. :) Thanks

  • systems/software engineering design process

    - by adam kim
I just developed my first non-trivial android app. It was a complete nightmare. I came up with an idea, build the app, changed my idea, and implemented a lot of input from others on new features. All in all my app took 10 times longer than I think that it should have, it is almost impossible to look the source code and tell what's going on with the classes, and may or may not have unused methods that I'll never be able to find... So I would like an opinion from those of you with experience on how to plan out my designs for the future. I created a flow chart (pencil drawn) of a plan: I would like constructive criticism.

  • Enterprise Architecture - Wikipedia

    - by pat.shepherd
I was looking at the Wikipedia entry for EA and found this chart which does a great job showing the differences of ENTERPRISE Architecture vs. SOLUTION Architecture across several categories.  This really gets at the heart of a misconception many people have about what EA is and where it sits in the grand business –> technical detail continuum. The following image from the 2006 FEA Practice Guidance of US OMB sheds light on the relationship between enterprise architecture and segment(BPR) or Solution architectures. (From this figure and a bit of thinking[which?] one can see that software architecture is truly a solution architecture discipline, for example.)
