  • WDS "No response" only when notify and wait for approval

    I have a WDS server setup for use with MDT2010, and everything was working fine until this morning. Now, whenever I try to boot from LAN, I get an error: Downloaded WDSNBP... Architecture: x64 WDSNBP started using DHCP Referral. Contacting Server: 10.50.10.12 (Gateway: 0.0.0.0) No response from Windows Deployment Services server. Launching pxeboot.com My PXE Response Policy setting on the WDS is set to this: [ ] Do not respond to any client computer [ ] Respond only to known client computers [o] Respond to all (known and unknown) client computers [X] For unknown clients, notify administrator and respond after approval The odd thing is that if I clear the approval option (so any computer gets a response) it works fine. I have delegated permissions on the AD OU to the computer object WDS is running on, but that doesn't seem to have helped. As it works without approval, I can only assume my DHCP options are fine and this is some sort of AD permission problem. (Server is Windows Server 2008 SP2)

  • System State Backups using NTbackup fail with error 0x800423f4 (relating to volume shadow copy)

    We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Service Pack 2. It is a domain controller (Global Catalog) and our main internal DNS server. We run a System State backup of the machine to back up Active Directory information and save the backup to a different server. This server has a single drive (C:), and we do have Shadow Copies enabled for the volume (which are completing successfully). The System State Backup is now failing with the following listed in the backup logs: Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. "Event Log Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting Backup. The operation did not successfully complete. When doing a vssadmin list writers, we sometimes get the following reported for the Event Log Writer (other times it says that it is in the state of "[1] Stable" with "No error"): Writer name: 'Event Log Writer' Writer Id: {eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00} Writer Instance Id: {c7194e96-868a-49e5-ba99-89b61977753c} State: [8] Failed Last error: Retryable error We have tried disabling the event log service via the registry, rebooting, deleting the event log files from the drive, then re-enabling the service via the registry and rebooting, but this didn't seem to solve the issue. We also get an error message when in the event viewer when trying to open the log for the "File Replication Service" of "Unable to complete the operation on 'File Replication Service'. The security descriptor structure is invalid." I have searched the error via Google and tried a number of different things, but nothing has seemed to help. Any suggestions on what we might try to get the Event Log Writer to behave would be greatly appreciated!

  • Windows AD DNS: Event ID 5504

    Two of my AD controllers (both running DNS service) appear to be having a similar issue. Both are throwing lots of events in the DNS events that look like this: Event Type: Information Event Source: DNS Event Category: None Event ID: 5504 Date: 5/24/2010 Time: 11:51:38 AM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA Description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 76.74.137.6. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet. That will come with the same event, same time, with a packet from 76.74.137.7 as well. I know this is "Information" not an error, but since it is new and different it bothers me (yes, I fear unexplained change!) Both machines are running Windows 2003 R2 SP2. The DNS servers are not exposed to the internet. Both DNS servers are configured to use OpenDNS for Forwarders. For both servers, this started about a week ago. Any thoughts on: 1) should I be concerned? 2) how can I stop/fix this? To keep it interesting, I have a 3rd AD / DNS box. Same domain, different Active Directory site. Same forwarders, yet doesn't have this issue.

  • Nginx / uWsgi / Django site can handle more traffic with rewrite URL

    Hi there. I'm running a Django app, using uWsgi behind Nginx. I've been doing some performance tuning and load testing using ApacheBench and have discovered something unexpected which I wonder if someone could explain for me. In my Nginx config I have a rewrite directive which catches lots of different URL permutations and then forwards them to the canonical URL I wish to use, eg, it traps www.mysite.com/whatever, www.mysite.co.uk/whatever and forwards them all to http://mysite.com/whatever. If I load test against any of the URLs listed with a redirect (ie, NOT the canonical URL which it is eventually forwarded to), it can serve 15000 concurrent connections without breaking a sweat. If I load test against the canonical URL, which the above test I would have expected got forwarded to anyway, it can't handle nearly as much. It will drop about 4000 of the 15000 requests, and can only handle about 9000 reliably. This is the command line I'm using to test: ab -c15000 -n15000 http://www.mysite.com/somepath/ and ab -c15000 -n15000 http://mysite.com/somepath/ I've tried several different types - it makes no different which order I do them in. This doesn't make sense to me - I can understand why the requests involving a redirect may not handle quite so many concurrent connections, but it's happening the other way round. Can anyone explain? I'd really prefer it if the canonical URL was the one which could handle more traffic. I'll post my Nginx config below.     How does FTP servers normaly handle rename to a file that aready exist? That is, will the existing to-file be overwritten or will I get an error? Is there some specification about how FTP servers should handle this, or is it OS or implementation dependent? vsftpd on Linux seems to overwrite, with FileZilla on Vista I get 550 file exists...

  • Long wait until POST...

    Here are the specs to put things into context: ECS P4VXASD2+ (V5.0) motherboard Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (512 KB L2, 533 MHz FSB) 2x 512 MB PC2100 DDR266 RAM 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 AGP WD Caviar SE 80 GB IDE HDD Gigabyte CD-RW drive OKIA 300W ATX PSU So, everytime I try to boot up this computer, it takes at least 10-15 seconds before it will POST. All my other machines will post within 1-2 seconds, but this one takes a particularly long time. I've read suggestions from a Google search to swap the CMOS battery, check BIOS settings, and double check CMOS jumper. Still after follow those, it takes a while to POST. What else could be causing a long delay before POSTing?

    Colleagues, I have need to run a script/program on certain basic OS level events. In particular when a file in Windows is opened. The open may be read-only or to edit, and may be initiated by a number of means, either from windows explorer (open or ), be selected from a viewing or editing application from the native file chooser, or drag-n-drop into an editing or viewing application. Further, i need the trigger to "hold" the event from completing the action until the runtime on the program has completed. The event handler program may return a pass state, or fail state. If fail state has been returned, then the event must disallow the initially requested action. Lastly, I need to add to the file in question a property or attribute that will contain metadata that will be used by the above event trigger handler program to make a determination as to the pass/fail condition that will ultimately determine if the user is permitted to open the file.     I have a small script to install on my remote machine an update. I would like to reboot the machine remotely and if it is rebooted, continue with some more commands. What I currently do is: ssh root@myMachine << COMMANDS_ISSUED ###... Tasks init 6 COMMANDS_ISSUED sleep 180s ssh root@myMachine << POST_REBOOT_COMMANDS ###.... More stuff POST_REBOOT_COMMANDS Is there a more elegant way to do it? Like pinging the machine all 5 seconds up to a maximum of 4 minutes? I play with a few linux machines which have different boot up times and if my script would continue immediately after reboot, this could safe quite some time for me. (Note: I don't want to parallelize execution over all machines as I want to see for each machine if everything worked fine)

    Hi, I have been using the ASP.NET chart controls for a while on win2k3 (32bit) setups without any issue but have noticed that on our new win2k8 (64bit) box I am getting a warning message showing up in the event viewer from the chart control.     I am writing to the event log from my Windows Forms application running on Windows 7 and am getting this message in the event log: The description for Event ID X from source Application cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Exception Details the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table My logging code is: public void Log(Exception exc) { EventLog.WriteEntry( "Application", exc.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error, 100); } My logging on Windows Forms is usually to a DB, but in this case decided to use the event log. I usually use the event log in ASP.NET applications, but those are on XP Pro locally and Windows Server 2003 on the web boxes. Is this a Windows 7 thing or a Windows Forms thing, and what should I do to fix this? Thanks.

    I've recently taken over some of the responsibilities of Maria Colgan (also known as the "optimizer lady") so she can move onto supporting our new In Memory Database features (note her new twitter handle for that: https://twitter.com/db_inmemory ).To that end, I have two one day Optimizer classes scheduled this year (and more to follow next year!).  The first one will be Wednesday November 20th in Northern California.  You can find details for that here: http://www.nocoug.org/ .The next one will be 5,500 miles (about 8,800 km) away in the UK - in Manchester.  That'll take place immediately following the UKOUG technical conference taking place the first week of December on December 5th.  You can see all of the details for that here: http://www.ukoug.org/events/tom-kyte-seminar-2013/I know I'll be doing one in Belgrade early next year, probably the first week in April.
