  • jquery stop image rotation on mouseover, start on mouseout / hover

    - by Matt Nathanson
I have built a jQuery rotator to rotate through 3 divs and loop them. I would like to add the functionality on mouse over to "freeze" the current div and then start again on mouse out. I've thought about setting a variable to false at the start of the function and setting it true when it's on it's current frame but I've got my self a bit confused. I've also tried to use the hover function but when using the in and out handlers, I'm confused as to how to stop, restart the animation. function ImageRotate() { var CurrentFeature = "#container" + featureNumber; $(CurrentFeature).stop(false, true).delay(4500).animate({'top' : '330px'}, 3000); var featureNumber2 = featureNumber+1; if ( featureNumber == numberOfFeatures) {featureNumber2 = 1} var NewFeature = "#container" + featureNumber2; $(NewFeature).stop(false, true).delay(4500).animate({'top' : '0px'}, 3000); var featureNumber3 = featureNumber-1; if ( featureNumber == 1) {featureNumber3 = numberOfFeatures}; var OldFeature = "#container" + featureNumber3; $(OldFeature).stop(false, true).delay(4500).css('top' , '-330px'); setTimeout('if (featureNumber == numberOfFeatures){featureNumber = 1} else {featureNumber++}; ImageRotate2()', 7500)}; Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Matt

  • Winforms: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt

    - by mamcx
I have a bunch of background events. All of them call a log: private void log(string text, params object[] values) { if (editLog.InvokeRequired) { editLog.BeginInvoke( (MethodInvoker)delegate { this.log(text, values); }); } else { text = string.Format(text, values) + Environment.NewLine; lock (editLog) { editLog.AppendText(text); editLog.SelectionStart = editLog.TextLength; editLog.ScrollToCaret(); } } } Sometimes I get this, but other times not: System.AccessViolationException was unhandled Message=Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. Source=System.Windows.Forms StackTrace: at System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.CallWindowProc(IntPtr wndProc, IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wParam, IntPtr lParam) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.DefWndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.RichTextBox.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.DebuggableCallback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam) at System.Windows.Forms.UnsafeNativeMethods.SendMessage(HandleRef hWnd, Int32 msg, Int32 wParam, Object& editOle) at System.Windows.Forms.TextBoxBase.ScrollToCaret() at Program1.frmMain.log(String text, Object[] values) in ... ... ... But not the main UI, just the flow of messages (ie: log look like is never called again) The app is a single form, with background process. I can't see what I doing wrong with this...

  • Memory leak while asynchronously loading BitmapSource images

    - by harry
I have a fair few images that I'm loading into a ListBox in my WPF application. Originally I was using GDI to resize the images (the originals take up far too much memory). That was fine, except they were taking about 400ms per image. Not so fine. So in search of another solution I found a method that uses TransformedBitmap (which inherits from BitmapSource). That's great, I thought, I can use that. Except I'm now getting memory leaks somewhere... I'm loading the images asynchronously using a BackgroundWorker like so: BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.ResizeBitmapSource(ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName)); //BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName); bs.Freeze(); this.dispatcher.Invoke(new Action(() => { photo.Source = bs; })); GetImageSource just gets the Bitmap from the path and then converts to BitmapSource. Here's the code snippet for ResizeBitmapSource: const int thumbnailSize = 200; int width; int height; if (bs.Width > bs.Height) { width = thumbnailSize; height = (int)(bs.Height * thumbnailSize / bs.Width); } else { height = thumbnailSize; width = (int)(bs.Width * thumbnailSize / bs.Height); } BitmapSource tbBitmap = new TransformedBitmap(bs, new ScaleTransform(width / bs.Width, height / bs.Height, 0, 0)); return tbBitmap; That code is essentially the code from: http://rongchaua.net/blog/c-wpf-fast-image-resize/ Any ideas what could be causing the leak?

  • Problem using AVAudioRecorder.

    - by tek3
Hi all, I am facing a strange problem with AVAudioRecorder. In my application i need to record audio and play it. I am creating my player as : if(recorder) { if(recorder.recording) [recorder stop]; [recorder release]; recorder = nil; } NSString * filePath = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent: [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Documents/%@.caf",songTitle]]; NSDictionary *recordSettings = [[NSDictionary alloc] initWithObjectsAndKeys: [NSNumber numberWithFloat: 44100.0],AVSampleRateKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: kAudioFormatAppleIMA4],AVFormatIDKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: 1], AVNumberOfChannelsKey, [NSNumber numberWithInt: AVAudioQualityMax],AVEncoderAudioQualityKey,nil]; recorder = [[AVAudioRecorder alloc] initWithURL: [NSURL fileURLWithPath:filePath] settings: recordSettings error: nil]; recorder.delegate = self; if ([recorder prepareToRecord] == YES){ [recorder record]; I am releasing and creating player every time i press record button. But the problem is that ,AVAudiorecorder is taking some time before starting to record , and so if i press record button multiple times continuously ,my application freezes for some time. The same code works fine without any problem when headphones are connected to device...there is no delay in recording, and the app doesn't freeze even if i press record button multiple times. Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

  • remove a:hover using javascript (not using jquery... don't ask)

    - by Cyprus106
I thought this would be pretty simple.... Basically, it's a 5-star rating system. When a user clicks, for example, three stars... I want to freeze those three stars right where they're at. I've been trying to simply remove the hover for the a href so it stays what it was at... maybe that's not the right method. I've exhausted absolutely everything I can think of... By the way this is straight javascript, not jquery or anything. It's crazy, I know but all of the JS was written straight.... I've got this class: .star-rating li a{ display:block; width:25px; height: 25px; text-decoration: none; text-indent: -9000px; z-index: 20; position: absolute; padding: 0px; } .star-rating li a:hover{ background: url(images/alt_star.png) left bottom; z-index: 2; left: 0px; } .star-rating a:focus, .star-rating a:active{ border:0; -moz-outline-style: none; outline: none; } .star-rating a.one-star{ left: 0px; } .star-rating a.one-star:hover{ width:25px; } and this code: <ul class='star-rating'> <li><a href="#" onclick="javascript: vote(<?=$id;?>, 1); disableStars(); return false;" title='1 star out of 5' id="1s" class='one-star'>1</a></li>

  • Ruby - Immutable Objects

    - by Chris Bunch
I've got a highly multithreaded app written in Ruby that shares a few instance variables. Writes to these variables are rare (1%) while reads are very common (99%). What is the best way (either in your opinion or in the idiomatic Ruby fashion) to ensure that these threads always see the most up-to-date values involved? Here's some ideas so far that I had (although I'd like your input before I overhaul this): Have a lock that most be used before reading or writing any of these variables (from Java Concurrency in Practice). The downside of this is that it puts a lot of synchronize blocks in my code and I don't see an easy way to avoid it. Use Ruby's freeze method (see here), although it looks equally cumbersome and doesn't give me any of the synchronization benefits that the first option gives. These options both seem pretty similar but hopefully anyone out there will have a better idea (or can argue well for one of these ideas). I'd also be fine with making the objects immutable so they aren't corrupted or altered in the middle of an operation, but I don't know Ruby well enough to make the call on my own and this question seems to argue that objects are highly mutable.

  • How can I simulate this application hang scenario?

    - by Pwninstein
I have a Windows Forms app that itself launches different threads to do different kinds of work. Occasionally, ALL threads (including the UI thread) become frozen, and my app becomes unresponsive. I've decided it may be a Garbage Collector-related issue, as the GC will freeze all managed threads temporarily. To verify that just managed threads are frozen, I spin up an unmanaged one that writes to a "heartbeat" file with a timestamp every second, and it is not affected (i.e. it still runs): public delegate void ThreadProc(); [DllImport("UnmanagedTest.dll", EntryPoint = "MyUnmanagedFunction")] public static extern void MyUnmanagedFunction(); [DllImport("kernel32")] public static extern IntPtr CreateThread( IntPtr lpThreadAttributes, uint dwStackSize, IntPtr lpStartAddress, IntPtr lpParameter, uint dwCreationFlags, out uint dwThreadId); uint threadId; ThreadProc proc = new ThreadProc(MyUnmanagedFunction); IntPtr functionPointer = Marshal.GetFunctionPointerForDelegate(proc); IntPtr threadHandle = CreateThread(IntPtr.Zero, 0, functionPointer, IntPtr.Zero, 0, out threadId); My Question is: how can I simulate this situation, where all managed threads are suspended but unmanaged ones keep on spinning? My first stab: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Thread t = new Thread(new ThreadStart(delegate { new Hanger(); GC.Collect(2, GCCollectionMode.Forced); })); t.Start(); } class Hanger{ private int[] m_Integers = new int[10000000]; public Hanger() { } ~Hanger() { Console.WriteLine("About to hang..."); //This doesn't reproduce the desired behavior //while (true) ; //Neither does this //Thread.Sleep(System.Threading.Timeout.Infinite); } } Thanks in advance!!

  • Asynchronously populate datagridview in Windows Forms application

    - by dcryptd
howzit! I'm a web developer that has been recently requested to develop a Windows forms application, so please bear with me (or dont laugh!) if my question is a bit elementary. After many sessions with my client, we eventually decided on an interface that contains a tabcontrol with 5 tabs. Each tab has a datagridview that may eventually hold up to 25,000 rows of data (with about 6 columns each). I have successfully managed to bind the grids when the tab page is loaded and it works fine for a few records, but the UI freezes when I bound the grid with 20,000 dummy records. The "freeze" occurs when I click on the tab itself, and the UI only frees up (and the tab page is rendered) once the bind is complete. I communicated this to the client and mentioned the option of paging for each grid, but she is adament w.r.t. NOT wanting this. My only option then is to look for some asynchronous method of doing this in the background. I don't know much about threading in windows forms, but I know that I can use the BackgroundWorker control to achieve this. My only issue after reading up a bit on it is that it is ideally used for "long-running" tasks and I/O operations. My questions: How does one determine a long-running task? How does one NOT MISUSE the BackgroundWorker control, ie. is there a general guideline to follow when using this? (I understand that opening/spawning multiple threads may be undesirable in certain instances) Most importantly: How can I achieve (asychronously) binding of the datagridview after the tab page - and all its child controls - loads. Thank you for reading this (ahem) lengthy query, and I highly appreciate any responses/thoughts/directions on this matter! Cheers!

  • [Repost-ish] Impossibly slow queries, Tables indexed, How can I speed it up?

Hi guys, I posted a little earlier on here at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2656837/query-results-taking-too-long-on-200k-database-speed-up-tips asking about slow executing SQL queries. • Eclipse JUnit Plugin Test very slow to re-execute Test Suite on Windows

    - by soundasleepful
I'm having an odd, and stressing, problem with running a large JUnit Plugin test suite in Eclipse. When I try to re-run a JUnit plugin suite that has just been executed, Eclipse hangs for quite some time before it eventually wakes up and launches. It can take up to 5 minutes sometimes, and increases with the size of the suite. Visually, it appears as a GC cleanup, except that I have plenty of GC space available (400 MB freely allocated). The size of the workspace that is has to delete is well under 1 GB, and there are not too many files - definitely less than 20,000. While I was waiting for a new run to start, I decided to manually kill explorer.exe to see if it had any effect. Surprisingly, Eclipse instantly fell out of its freeze and ran as normal. This makes me think that Windows is somehow interfering with the deletion of these workspace files. They're not being put into the Recycle Bin though. The workspace is in C: which I think is out of the range of any workspace/domain stuff. Any ideas?

  • Running another process without GUI freezing

    - by Adam
    I'm having trouble getting my GUI to appear and not freeze while running (and waiting for) an outside process. In this case, drivers.exe is a very simply program where the user simply clicks "OK". So whenever I click OK, it exits. I am trying to simply make my status strip count numbers up (really fast) as drivers.exe is executing. But in practice, my GUI never appears at all until drivers.exe exits. private void run_drivers() { Console.WriteLine("Start Driver"); int driver_timeout_in_minutes = 20; System.Diagnostics.Process driverproc = System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(Application.StartupPath + "\\" + "drivers.exe"); driverproc.WaitForExit(driver_timeout_in_minutes * 1000 * 60); //uses milliseconds, we must convert } private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { ThreadStart worker = new ThreadStart(run_drivers); Console.WriteLine("Main - Creating worker thread"); toolStripStatusLabel1.Text = "hi"; Thread t = new Thread(worker); t.IsBackground = true; t.Start(); Console.WriteLine("Main - Have requested the start of worker thread"); int i = 0; while (t.IsAlive) { i++; toolStripStatusLabel1.Text = i.ToString(); } Console.WriteLine("Dead"); }

  • Visual Studio 2008 IDE freezes/crashes when opening .aspx file with css included

    - by Kai
I have read a lot of questions about Visual Studio 2008 crashing on viewing some source files. However, I still can't fix this problem. Visual Studio (SP1) runs fine until I try and view .aspx source files with the lines <style type="text/css"> </stlye> anywhere in them, upon which it freezes (i.e is totally unresponsive) and I have to use the task manager to shut it down. I have systematically deleted and re-included all other code and it comes down to these two lines, which is very confusing. Sometimes it happens as soon as the lines are added, sometimes it doesn't freeze until I build the solution with any of the problem pages open. I can add external style sheets, and it only started recently. I tried the event viewer logs but I don't really understand how to use them to find out about this. I had Resharper 4.5 installed and have since uninstalled it, and do not have anything else installed. Is there any way I can a) find out what's happening, b) fix it without reinstalling vs?

  • Bundle a Python app as a single file to support add-ons or extensions?

    - by Brandon Craig Rhodes
There are several utilities — all with different procedures, limitations, and target operating systems — for getting a Python package and all of its dependencies and turning them into a single binary program that is easy to ship to customers: http://wiki.python.org/moin/Freeze http://www.pyinstaller.org/ http://www.py2exe.org/ http://svn.pythonmac.org/py2app/py2app/trunk/doc/index.html My situation goes one step further: third-party developers will be wanting to write plug-ins, extensions, or add-ons for my application. It is, of course, a daunting question how users on platforms like Windows would most easily install plugins or addons in such a way that my app can easily discover that they have been installed. But beyond that basic question is another: how can a third-party developer bundle their extension with whatever libraries the extension itself needs (which might be binary modules, like lxml) in such a way that the plugin's dependencies become available for import at the same time that the plugin becomes available. How can this be approached? Will my application need its own plug-in area on disk and its own plug-in registry to make this tractable? Or are there general mechanisms, that I could avoid writing myself, that would allow an app that is distributed as a single executable to look around and find plugins that are also installed as single files?

  • WPF User Control is causing Out of Memory Exception

    - by Chairman Meow
Looking for a free spell checking solution, I thought I was so smart in doing this but I guess not. I have created a windows form based application and I want the form to add a user specified amount of user controls (with textboxes) on to a panel. The user can then click some button and the controls on this panel are cleared and new ones are added. The user does something and the process is repeated. Now, I wanted these textboxes to support spell checking and looked all over for a free solution. WPF textboxes support spell checking where the ones in regular win forms do not. I thought I would be able to use these WPF textboxes by adding them to an ElementHost object which is, in turn, within a panel. This panel would be a user control. So, in my application, I would be able to add instances of these user controls onto the form and make use of .NET's spell checking goodness. This actually worked but after using the application for a while, found that the application would eventually freeze on me due to out of memory errors. I have pinpointed the memory errors to these WPF controls since this problem does not happen with normal textboxes. When the window is opened and the number of controls is specified, this is pretty much how the controls are added: Dim xOffset As Integer = 0 For i As Integer = 0 To theNumber Dim myUserControl As New SpecialUserControl() myPanel.Controls.Add(myUserControl) myUserControl.Location = New Point(7, 7) myUserControl.Location = New Point(xOffset, 7) xOffset = xOffset + 207 Next Note that: myPanel is a panel on a form SpecialUserControl is the user control with WPF textbox (within an ElementHost object) When the user pressed a button, the panel is cleared: myUserControl.Controls.Clear() The user can then repeat the process. There are a lot of results on the internet when I tried to find a solution and I'm thinking that the problem I am having is due to the fact that the WPF control is not going away even after clearing the panel. Following this conclusion, I have tried different solutions regarding disposing these controls or setting them to nothing but the memory problem keeps occurring. If someone could give me some advice or ideas here, I'd really appreciate it.

  • How to update QStandartItemModel without freezing the main UI

    - by user1044002
    I'm starting to learn PyQt4 and have been stuck on something for a long time now and can't figure it out myself: Here is the concept: There is a TreeView with custom QStandartItemModel, which gets rebuild every couple of seconds, and can have a lot (hundreds at least) of entries, there also will be additional delegates for the different columns etc. It's fairly complex and the building time for even plain model, without delegates, goes up to .3 sec, which makes the TreeView to freeze. Please advice me for the best approach on solving this. I was thing of somehow building the model in different thread, and eventually sending it to the TreeView, where it would just perform setModel() with the new one, but couldn't make that work. here is some code that may illustrate the problem a bit: from PyQt4.QtCore import * from PyQt4.QtGui import * import sys, os, re, time app = QApplication(sys.argv) REFRESH = 1 class Reloader_Thread(QThread): def __init__(self, parent = None): QThread.__init__(self, parent) self.loaders = ['\\', '--', '|', '/', '--'] self.emit(SIGNAL('refresh')) def run(self): format = '|%d/%b/%Y %H:%M:%S| ' while True: self.emit(SIGNAL('refresh')) self.sleep(REFRESH) class Model(QStandardItemModel): def __init__(self, viewer=None): QStandardItemModel.__init__(self,None) self.build() def build(self): stTime = time.clock() newRows = [] for r in range(1000): row = [] for c in range(12): item = QStandardItem('%s %02d%02d' % (time.strftime('%H"%M\'%S'), r,c)) row.append(item) newRows.append(row) eTime = time.clock() - stTime outStr = 'Build %03f' % eTime format = '|%d/%b/%Y %H:%M:%S| ' stTime = time.clock() self.beginRemoveRows(QModelIndex(), 0, self.rowCount()) self.removeRows(0, self.rowCount()) self.endRemoveRows() eTime = time.clock() - stTime outStr += ', Remove %03f' % eTime stTime = time.clock() numNew = len(newRows) for r in range(numNew): self.appendRow(newRows[r]) eTime = time.clock() - stTime outStr += ', Set %03f' % eTime self.emit(SIGNAL('status'), outStr) self.reset() w = QWidget() w.setGeometry(200,200,800,600) hb = QVBoxLayout(w) tv = QTreeView() tvm = Model(tv) tv.setModel(tvm) sb = QStatusBar() reloader = Reloader_Thread() tvm.connect(tvm, SIGNAL('status'), sb.showMessage) reloader.connect(reloader, SIGNAL('refresh'), tvm.build) reloader.start() hb.addWidget(tv) hb.addWidget(sb) w.show() app.setStyle('plastique') app.processEvents(QEventLoop.AllEvents) app.aboutToQuit.connect(reloader.quit) app.exec_()

  • how to match var/id to class

    - by circey
    Hi. I'm new to jquery and, in addition, I think I'm having a brain freeze. I have a number of links with different ids. I want to match the clicked link with a div with the corresponding class so the div will show/hide/toggle as appropriate. I have: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('.folioBox').hide(); $('a.interface').click(function(){ var currentId = $(this).attr('id'); var currentBox = $('.folioBox .' + currentId); $(currentBox).toggle(400); }); }); </script> <a class="interface" id="apple">Apple flavor</a> <a class="interface" id="banana">Banana flavor</a> <a class="interface" id="cherry">Cherry flavor</a> <div class="folioBox apple">content</div> <div class="folioBox banana">content</div> <div class="folioBox cherry">content</div> I just can't get it to work and I can't figure out whether I would be best using match or find or filter. Some assistance would be much appreciated!

  • when updating location.hash in Chrome the jQuery animation "freezes" for a second

    - by ubunut
I'm trying to create a sort of "virtual gallery". I'm using Coda Slider 2.0 & jQuery v1.4.2 It behaves perfectly in IE, FF & Safari, but Chrome seems to reload/hang for a second when setting location.hash. This causes the jQuery animation to freeze for a second :S Example: http://hardyernst.dk/gallery.html try clicking on the navigation links above the pictures. The jQuery code that is being executed when clicking a navigation link: $('#coda-nav-' + sliderCount + ' a').each(function(z) { // What happens when a nav link is clicked $(this).bind("click", function() { offset = -(panelWidth*z); navClicks++; $(this).addClass('current').parents('ul').find('a').not($(this)).removeClass('current'); alterPanelHeight(z); currentPanel = z + 1; $('.panel-container', slider).stop().animate({ left: offset }, settings.slideEaseDuration, settings.slideEaseFunction, function(){ if (!settings.crossLinking) { return false; } // Don't change the URL hash unless cross-linking is specified }); }); }); if I add return false; at the end of the function. The animation will slide smoothly :)... BUT as you might have guessed the location.hash value remains unchanged :( I have tried setting the location.hash earlier in the function alas it did not change the behavior in Chrome Would be immensely grateful for any help :) Regards Ubunut

  • vb.net, How can I limit a textchanged event for a textbox to keyboard input only?

    - by Luay
Hi everyone, Please allow me to explain what I have and what I am trying to achieve. I have a textbox (called txtb1) and a button under it (called btn_browse) on a winform in a vb.net project. When the user clicks the button a folder browser dialog appears. The user selects his desired folder and when he/she clicks 'ok' the dialog closes and the path of the folder selected appears in the textbox. I also want to store that value in a variable to be used somewhere else(the value will be copied to an xml file when the user clicks 'apply' on the form, but this has no effect nor is related to my problem). To achieve that I have the following code: Public myVar As String Private Sub btn_browse_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btn_browse.Click Dim f As New FolderBrowserDialog If f.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then txtb1.Text = f.SelectedPath End If myVar = txtb1.text f.Dispose() End Sub This part works with no problems. Now, what if the user either: 1- decides to enter the path manually rather than use the browse button. or, 2- after using the browse button and selecting the folder they decide to manually change the location In trying to solve this I added a textchanged event to the textbox as follows: Private Sub txtb1_TextChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles txtb1.TextChanged myVar = txtb1.Text End Sub However, this is not working. Apparently, and I don't know if this is relevant, when the user selects the desired folder using the browse button the textchanged event is also triggered. and when I click on the textbox (to give it focus) and press any keyboard key the application simply stops responding. So my questions are: am I going about this the right way? if my logic is flawed, could someone point me to how usually such a thing could be achieved? is it possible to limit the triggering events to only keyboard input as a way around this? I tried the keydown and keypress events but I am getting the freeze. I would be grateful for your help. Thanks

  • Is it possible to unstick a remote IIS ASP server after an exception hangs the session?

    - by user89691
I have been coding an app in classic ASP that accesses 2 Access databases. I had a page I was working on throw an exception, which is normal during development and causes no lasting problems. This time however, after the exception any attempt to open either of the databases would freeze the session with an infinite script timeout. If I delete the session cookie I an able to access ASP pages again until I try to open the database again. The database that was open when the exception was thrown is left open. There is a LDB lock file and I can't rename or delete either the LDB or MDB file, though I can download the MDB file with FTP. The 2nd access database is not open but any attempt to read this also hangs the session. Accessing HTML pages is fine. The site is hosted with Hostway and they are not interested ("Coding problem = Your problem" even though it leaves my site dead in the water, I suspect until the next reboot, whenever that might be). Here is the dump from the relevant ASP page that threw the exception: Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0115' Unexpected error /translatestats.asp A trappable error (C0000005) occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running. Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0240' Script Engine Exception /translatestats.asp A ScriptEngine threw exception 'C0000005' in 'IActiveScript::Close()' from 'CActiveScriptEngine::FinalRelease()'. Is there any way I can unstick the site / force close the database remotely ?

  • Could Python's logging SMTP Handler be freezing my thread for 2 minutes?

    - by Oddthinking
A rather confusing sequence of events happened, according to my log-file, and I am about to put a lot of the blame on the Python logger, which is a bold claim. I thought I should get some second opinions about whether what I am saying could be true. I am trying to explain why there is are several large gaps in my log file (around two minutes at a time) during stressful periods for my application when it is missing deadlines. I am using Python's logging module on a remote server, and have set-up, with a configuration file, for all logs of severity of ERROR or higher to be emailed to me. Typically, only one error will be sent at a time, but during periods of sustained problems, I might get a dozen in a minute - annoying, but nothing that should stress SMTP. I believe that, after a short spurt of such messages, the Python logging system (or perhaps the SMTP system it is sitting on) is encountering errors or congestion. The call to Python's log is then BLOCKING for two minutes, causing my thread to miss its deadlines. (I was smart enough to move the logging until after the critical path of the application - so I don't care if logging takes me a few seconds, but two minutes is far too long.) This seems like a rather awkward architecture (for both a logging system that can freeze up, and for an SMTP system (Ubuntu, sendmail) that cannot handle dozens of emails in a minute**), so this surprises me, but it exactly fits the symptoms. Has anyone had any experience with this? Can anyone describe how to stop it from blocking? ** EDIT: I actually counted. A little under 4000 short emails in two hours. So far more than I suggested, sorry. But enough to over-fill a Sendmail's buffers?

  • SSH traffic over openvpn freezes under weird circumstances

    - by user289581
I have an openvpn (version 2.1_rc15 at both ends) connection setup between two gentoo boxes using shared keys. it works fine for the most part. I use mysql, http, ftp, scp over the vpn with no problems. But when I ssh from the client to the server over the vpn, weird things happen. I can login, i can execute some commands. But if i try to run an ncurses application like top, or i try to cat a file, the connection will stall and I'll have to sever the ssh session. I can, for example, execute "echo blah; echo .; echo blah" and it will output the three lines of text over the ssh session fine. But if i execute "cat /etc/motd" the session will freeze the moment I press enter. While it seems like a terminal emulation problem it makes no sense why using the vpn would affect the ability for ssh to render things correctly. I am at a loss to explain why everything else works, including scp, but ssh just breaks over the vpn. Any thoughts ?

  • Java problem with multiple threads when executing a runnable jar file

    - by Spi1988
I have developed a Java Swing application, which uses the SwingWorker class to perform some long running tasks. When the application is run from the IDE (Netbeans), I can start multiple long running tasks simultaneously without any problem. I created a runnable jar file for the application, in order to be able to run it from outside the IDE. The application when run from this jar file works well with the only exception that it doesn't allow me to start 2 long running tasks simultaneously. When I start the first task (assume it takes 2 minitues to complete), every thing works fine, the UI does not freeze (it never freezes). However, when I try to run another task (assume it takes just 10 seconds, therefore it should finish before the first task) while the first task has not yet completed, nothing seems to happen. In reality, the second task would have started, and also finished its processing, however its results are only displayed once the first task completes. I dunno why this is happening. Is there some restriction on the number of threads which could run simultaneously on the JVM? Are there any jvm arguments which i could try to solve this problem. I hope i explained my problem well. Thanks in advance, Peter Bartolo

  • How should I avoid memoization causing bugs in Ruby?

    - by Andrew Grimm
Is there a consensus on how to avoid memoization causing bugs due to mutable state? In this example, a cached result had its state mutated, and therefore gave the wrong result the second time it was called. class Greeter def initialize @greeting_cache = {} end def expensive_greeting_calculation(formality) case formality when :casual then "Hi" when :formal then "Hello" end end def greeting(formality) unless @greeting_cache.has_key?(formality) @greeting_cache[formality] = expensive_greeting_calculation(formality) end @greeting_cache[formality] end end def memoization_mutator greeter = Greeter.new first_person = "Bob" # Mildly contrived in this case, # but you could encounter this in more complex scenarios puts(greeter.greeting(:casual) << " " << first_person) # => Hi Bob second_person = "Sue" puts(greeter.greeting(:casual) << " " << second_person) # => Hi Bob Sue end memoization_mutator Approaches I can see to avoid this are: greeting could return a dup or clone of @greeting_cache[formality] greeting could freeze the result of @greeting_cache[formality]. That'd cause an exception to be raised when memoization_mutator appends strings to it. Check all code that uses the result of greeting to ensure none of it does any mutating of the string. Is there a consensus on the best approach? Is the only disadvantage of doing (1) or (2) decreased performance? (I also suspect freezing an object may not work fully if it has references to other objects) Side note: this problem doesn't affect the main application of memoization: as Fixnums are immutable, calculating Fibonacci sequences doesn't have problems with mutable state. :)

  • Question about making Asynchronous call in C# (WPF) to COM object

    - by Andrew
Hi, Sorry to ask such a basic question but I seem to have a brain freeze on this one! I'm calling a COM (ATL) object from my WPF project. The COM method might take a long time to complete. I thought I'd try and call it asychronously. I have a few demo lines that show the problem. private void checkBox1_Checked(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //DoSomeWork(); AsyncDoWork caller = new AsyncDoWork(DoSomeWork); IAsyncResult result = caller.BeginInvoke(null, null); } private delegate void AsyncDoWork(); private void DoSomeWork() { _Server.DoWork(); } The ATL method DoWork is very exciting. It is: STDMETHODIMP CSimpleObject::DoWork(void) { Sleep(5000); return S_OK; } I had expectations that running this way would result in the checkbox being checked right away (instead of in 5 seconds) and me being able to move the WPF gui around the screen. I can't - for 5 seconds. What am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's something pretty simple. Delegate signature wrong? Thanks.

  • How do I model teams and gameplay in this scorekeeping application?

    - by Eric Hill
I'm writing a scorekeeping application for card game that has a few possibly-interesting constraints. The application accepts user registrations for players, then lets them check-in to a particular game (modeled as Event). After the final player registers, the app should generate teams, singles or doubles, depending on the preference of the person running the game and some validations (can't do doubles if there's an odd number checked in). There are @event.teams.count rounds in the game. To sum up: An event consists of `@event.teams.count` rounds; Teams can have 1 or more players Events have n or n/2 teams (depending on whether it's singles or doubles) Users will be members of different teams at different events Currently I have a rat's nest of associations: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :teams, :through => :players has_many :events, :through => :teams class Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :rounds has_many :teams has_many :players, :through => :teams class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :team end class Team < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :players belongs_to :event end class Round < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :event belongs_to :user end The sticky part is team generation. I have basically a "start game" button that should freeze the registrations and pair up teams either singly or doubly, and render to Round#new so that the first (and subsequent) matches can be scored. Currently I'm implementing this as a check on Round#new that calls Event#generate_teams and displays the view: # Event#generate_teams def generate_teams # User has_many :events, :through => :registrations # self.doubles is a boolean denoting 2 players per team registrations.in_groups_of(self.doubles ? 2 : 1, nil).each do |side| self.teams << Player.create(self, side) end end Which doesn't work. Should there maybe be a Game model that ties everything together rather than (my current method) defining the game as an abstraction via the relationships between Events, Users, and Rounds (and Teams and Players and etc.)? My head is swimming.
