  • Good Windows shell replacement [closed]

    - by Jazz
I'm looking for a shell replacement for Windows, instead of Explorer. The features I'm looking at are: a task bar a tray bar an application launcher (I mostly use Launchy for that, but I need a launcher for those applications I forget the name...) The lighter and the easier to configure, the better! I'm currently using Emerge, but I found it a little buggy. I tried many others, but I never found something convincing.

  • good, simple music streaming for windows?

    - by The Journeyman geek
I've been using itunes to stream music over lan, and quite frankly the quality is terrible. On the other hand, its ease of use - having a simple client on either end, and it just 'working' with full control on my end is nice- the quality however is terrible - I'm wondering if there's any controllable streaming remote music serve for windows that will let me pick the bitrate it sends at, or uses whatever bitrate the original file is in, and just sends it, and has itself controllable at the client end, and will work acceptably over a wlan connection

  • iSCSI SAN RAID 10 Performance -- Poor Read, Good Write

    - by Litzner
I have a EqualLogic PS4000 SAN unit with the latest firmware, setup in RAID 10. I have 3 2TB Volumes on the SAN shared out via iSCSI on 2 eth ports on two different subnets. I have moved a test server over to this newly setup SAN, and my testing is showing me a problem. I am getting dismal read performance in everything except a test with 32 queue depth (see attach image) Write performance seems to be right about where it should be. I have tried MPIO on and off, on was slightly better but not much.

  • Good Slideshow DVD programs?

    - by AlexMax
I want to burn a bunch of pictures to a DVD slideshow. However, Google reveals that there are tons of software programs that claim to do this. Can anyone recommend one of them without me having to download 20 of them only to discover half don't work and the other half are free trials to $29 software that doesn't work either? The only one which I have tried out so far is DVD Slideshow GUI, which is simply a mess of programs. It was free, but it crashed a whole bunch, spit errors at me when i tried to preview and never worked when I tried to export the slideshow to mpg.

  • Rails Hosting - Is RailsPlayground.com a Good Host?

    - by stringo0
My team is currently looking into hosting for RoR apps, and we're considering RailsPlayground, Linode and SliceHost. We haven't found anyone recommending rails playground, and web of trust seems to caution against it - http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/railsplayground.com I like the fact that they give you a sourcerepo account for free to host and track git repos, etc. The Questions: Is there any reason not to go with RailsPlayground? Have you had any negative experiences with RailsPlayground? (Feel free to share positives as well) Thanks!

  • Good HTTP Monitoring tools

    - by ffffff
    I look for HTTP to work with a Linux system server monitor tool every protocol. I know, and will not there be it in whom or a freeware? When, for example, I dump 80/tcp with a packet monitor to be concrete # tethereal -i ppp0 port 80 -x Capturing on ppp0 1244206390.030474 219.111.xx.xx -> 74.125.xx.xx HTTP GET /search?output=js&num=0&dt=1244206414703&client=pub-3031568651010206&q=Cagliari%20Flight&ad=n3&ie=utf8&oe=utf8&channel=0091594208&adtest=off HTTP/1.1 0000 00 04 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 ................ 0010 45 00 01 e5 ee 82 40 00 40 06 d2 b5 db 6f 02 5b E.....@[email protected].[ 0020 4a 7d 4f 93 d4 29 00 50 3e df 4c 63 4b 6b 42 e0 J}O..).P>.LcKkB Such output is provided, but there is too much unnecessary information such as an SYN packet or a header. What I want The IP address of the client and sending out character string(Get; the contents of the POST) Among the output character string of the server only as for the HTML (Content-Type:) I am what is chisel) of a thing of text/html. I can set a filter and am the best if only information wanting can accumulate in the log.

  • Good documentation tool that is not Latex?

    - by flpgdt
I am far from being a expert in Latex but I'm ok to document my projects with it. Though I would seldom find people in the corporate word eager to learn latex and going along with the documentation. 99% of the cases they would just ask me the Word version of it. For technical documentation I find less resistance, but still, whenever I start a project with someone not familiar with latex, the starting up is troublesome. That said, latex is a bit of an oversize tool for my needs really. My documents hardly go further from tables, lists, few images and type styles (although I'd love to still be able to produce hyperlinked PDFs). What are other tools there, simpler and with a easier learning curve than Latex, but still PDF worthy and with minimally decent capabilities? It also has to run on windows :( Oh. yeah, MSWord is not an option ;)

  • Looking for good program for cataloging DVD, Video files, ebook

    - by Stecy
I'm looking for a windows program for cataloging my DVD, video files, ebook, etc... The program must have some retrieval of information from the internet and from the files themselves. Also, one MUST HAVE requirement is that if a file/ebook changes location, I need to be able to change it in the software. Even better if the program allows bulk updating... Update Order of preference is: open-source, freeware, shareware, commercial.

  • What is a good lightweight webradio program

    - by Robert Vukovic
I am currently using Screamer Radio but it is a little bit buggy. It freezes a lot if internet connection is bad and can not continue if there are interruptions in the internet connection. I am not interested in some full sized MP3/media player, just a simple (with low memory footprint) application that can play streaming internet radio stations.

  • Recommendations: Good Network MFP Printer/Scanner

    - by Joeme
Hi, We have a small office that is expanding. At the moment we have 1x HP J6424 MFP, shared using it's built in network port. It is now becoming a headache, we have daily problems with people not being able to print or scan, and jobs just sitting in the queue. Or the scanner not being detected. Sometimes people can print but not scan, sometimes scan but not print, sometimes a bit of both. We are also pretty much constantly printing or scanning, or trying to! I would like to get a laser MFP (mono is fine) which works well for scanning a printing over the network with multiple users. Althernativly any recommendations for network scanners (sheet feed and or duplex a bonus). Clients are Windows 7 and Mac. Thanks very much!

  • Permission denied but group permissions look good on redhat

    - by Tony
I have a user ftpadmin: -bash-3.2$ id ftpadmin uid=10001(ftpadmin) gid=2525(fsg) groups=2525(fsg),10005(git) The important group to note is "git" Then I have my git repository: ls -al drwxrwxr-x 7 git git 4096 Apr 20 14:17 fsg So ftpadmin is a member of git, and git has given all permissions to people in the group. Why do I see this when I login as ftpadmin: -bash-3.2$ ls -al /home/git/ ls: /home/git/fsg: Permission denied ... Seems like I should have permission...

    - by ldigas
Link extractor - since I don't know a better name for it; a utility which can take a .htm file, and give me links from it, not counting and so, just direct links. Useful for files in which you have a number of html links which are in a text and so on ... Anyone knows of some, by any chance ?

  • What is a good listserv replacement?

    - by David Smith
A board I'm on has about 700 - 1300 members being served from a listserv maintained by a company one of our board members is on. This restricts the ability of other board members to use the listserv unless they are employees of the company. They want to move to a system where anyone can administer the list. I'm thinking of switching to Constant Contact or Google Groups. We want something that allows list members to manage their own contact preferences and enables anyone authorized to send emails to the list.
