  • Windows Server 2003 Router, Good approach [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Windows Server 2003 Router with PortForwarding Situation We have Verizon Fios 25/25 Internet Connection, Server acting as a router, and around 12 office computers. Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual). Using this guide http://www.rosscode.com/blog/index.php?title=port_forwarding_in_windows_2003&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 I faced a problem. Before enabling "RRA" I had to unshare internet connection (wan interface) and was able to setup network. Now how do I setup a network within "RRA" and share internet with private network?   • SBS 2008 Sharepoint Database good Memory Limit.

    I manage a small network running on Small Business Server 2008. Lately, the Sharepoint embedded database is getting out of control with its memory usage. I've got a total of 16 GB of RAM on this server, and the Sharepoint database sometimes uses almost 8 GB of RAM. This never happened before, and it started happening after I installed Backup Exec 2010. It happens after a backup is performed. So I suspect there is a memory leak involved. I am working on that issue, but this question isn't about that. I would like to limit the amount of memory the Embedded database uses. I know how to do it. My question is, what would be the ideal amount of memory that I can allocate to Sharepoint? There are only 4 users on my network. One of the users uses two computers but not at the same time. They use sharepoint for a company calendar, and sometimes they share files that way also. Let me know if you need to know anything else. Thanks,

  • MicroSD card getting corrupted for no good reason

    I recently bought an MicroSD card online. It's a Sandisk 16GB class 2. However, it has a nasty problem. Every time I fill it with my data, the fat tables get corrupted. I've tried reformatting it, blanking it, doesn't seem to solve the problem. I have tried windows and linux (ubuntu), both have the problem. I've used my usb microsd readers, and even tried putting it in my phone and putting data on it from there. All have this problem. Now the really odd thing is, besides the corrupted file tables, no programs can find anything wrong with the hardware. I've tried both chkdisk and "badblocks -w", neither give any type of error. Now I don't know if the actual data gets corrupted, or if its just filesystem tables. What happens is that one or more folders start showing a load of chinese-charred (random UTF8 symbols I suppose) folders and files, and it is impossible to do anything with those. All the other data (outside of the corrupted folders) seems fine. I've tried to test it, and the problem doesn't seem to show up until I fill the disk upto about 3~4GB. After that I can still access the data. But as soon as I eject/safely remove/unmount it, the bad things happen somehow. Next time I plug it in, the folders I most recently wrote to (but sometimes also the folders I wrote the time before last time to) are all gibberish. Does anybody have any clue what might be going on here?

  • Writing good looking documentation in pdf format on a mac [closed]

    I'd like to write some documentation that will be written in sections (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc). I'd like to use something that will generate the table of contents in the end or at least have it "linked" up so that when I make changes everything is still accurate (if I merge section 2.1 and 2.2 or something). The end result needs to be in pdf. I don't want to pay $350 for Acrobat Pro either... I've got microsoft word, but every little thing is a pain (for example, having one background of a page be a different color than another). Any ideas on how to create quality documentation in a pdf format?

  • What is a good way to get back to the command prompt discarding STDOUT and STDERR

    I often launch applications from the cli via e.g. command & to immediately get back to the prompt back. The downside of this is, that I still get STDOUT and STDERR. So I use command &> /dev/null to discard those outputs. This can get quite a chore, when having to write this often during a day. So my question is, is there a better (read shorter) way to discard of STDOUT and STDERR when not needed? What could be done? write a wrapper script to launch applications? What would be an elegant way to do this?

  • Can anybody recommend a good data recovery strategy?

    So lets say you've failed at preventing a drive failure, and also, you've failed to make a backup of said drive. Push has come to shove and now you need a way to recover you're precious data. Has anybody out there run into this situation? And if so could you please provide any suggestions on how to recover the data based on your experiences? For example have you used any data recovery services that you could either recommend, or that you would definitely avoid if you had a do-over? Thanks in advance

  • When can you call yourself good at language X?

    This goes back to a conversation I've had with my girlfriend. I tried to tell her that I simply don't feel adequate enough in my programming language (C++) to call myself good. She then asked me, "Well, when do you consider yourself good enough?" That's an interesting question. I didn't know what to tell her. So I'm asking you. For any programming language, framework or the like, when do you reach a point were you sit back, look at what you've done and say, "Hey, I'm actually pretty good at this."? How do you define "good" so that you can tell others, honestly, "Yeah, I'm good at X". Additionally, do you reach these conclusions by comparing what others can do? Additional Info I have read the canonical paper on how it takes ten-thousand hours before you are an expert on the field. (Props to anybody that knows what this paper is called again) I have also read various articles from Coding Horror about interviewing people. Some people, it was said, "Cannot function outside of a framework." So they may be "good" for that framework, but not otherwise in the language. Is this true?

  • Good IDE for Mono on Windows

    I would like to develop Mono application for Win/Linux/Mac in C# on Windows. Is there any really good (Visual Studio comparable) IDE for that? The best would be if I could manage Visual C# Express to compile solutions using the Mono compiler. I've found a #develop IDE, which looks very cool and has many features that Express edition of the Visual Studio hasn't (like plugins for TortoiseSVN, NUnit, etc). Hovewer the 3.* versions dropped support for Mono, so you are no longer able to compile solutions using the Mono compiler. There is also a MonoDevelop. I've tried it and it sucks. Not comparable to Visual Studio at all. No WinForms designer, + tons of other missing features. I would just like if they would drop the development of MonoDevelop and build a plugin for #develop instead. Is there any other good enough IDE, or is it possible to make the Visual C# Express or #develop compile the solutions with Mono compiler?

  • Programatically find TFS changes since last good build

    I have several branches in TFS (dev, test, stage) and when I merge changes into the test branch I want the automated build and deploy script to find all the updated SQL files and deploy them to the test database. I thought I could do this by finding all the changesets associated with the build since the last good build, finding all the sql files in the changesets and deploying them. However I don't seem to be having the changeset associated with the build for some reason so my question is twofold: 1) How do I ensure that a changeset is associated with a particular build? 2) How can I get a list of files that have changed in the branch since the last good build? I have the last successfully built build but I'm unsure how to get the files without checking the changesets (which as mentioned above are not associated with the build!)

    Most of the code I've written in .NET to make REST calls have been synchronous. Since Silverlight on Windows Phone only supports Async WebClient and HttpWebRequest calls, I was wondering what a good async pattern is for a Class that exposes methods that make REST calls. For example, I have an app that needs to do the following. Login and get token Using token from #1, get a list of albums Using token from #1 get a list of categories etc my class exposes a few methods: Login() GetAlbums() GetCategories() since each method needs to call WebClient using Async calls what I need to do is essentially block calling Login till it returns so that I can call GetAlbums(). What is a good way to go about this in my class that exposes those methods?

    Hello! I am pretty good on making web applications and I know how to transfer data to and from client/server, etc. I need some help though learning how to make the data exchanges more secure. That is the reason why I feel kind of scared to publish any web app I make. I wanted to know what are some good guides to help you understand and learn how to secure data transfer with your web application? Things like better authentication for example and making better logins. You can post any suggestion, but just for your information, I mainly code my web apps with Javascript and PHP.   • Good Economics book for developers

    Joel mentions in several of his blog posts that it is very important for a developer/software entrepreneur to have solid understanding of Economics. Yet the Fog Creek MBA book reading list does not include any Economics books. Is there any good material that people can recommend? Obviously, I am not as concerned about mathematical treatise as foundations and basic principles. For example, I was able to find a very good high-level read on Macroeconomics: Concise Guide to Macroeconomics but I am yet to find anything similar on Microeconomics. Any suggestions and reading pointers would be highly appreciated.

    I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work. The description is as follows: The Lead Applications Developer, supporting the Programming Group, will be responsible for all phases of the system development life cycle including performing system analysis, requirements definition, database design, preparation of scopes of work, and development of project plans. Supervise programming staff and manage projects involving the design, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of complex Oracle based user applications using Oracle Development tools. Applications will be deployed using Oracle Application Server utilizing programming languages such as JAVA, JSF, JSP, Oracle ADF, PL/SQL, and XML with J2EE and EJB technology.   • Looking for a good database structure to achieve Facebook/SO like notifications

    I want to be able to have notifications on my site, similar to the way SO does it. I have looked for a good table structure to do this, but I cant seem to figure it out. I was thinking something like this. Notifications id, notification_type_id, user_id, type_id Notification Types id, notification_text Where the notification type would relate to either a new post, a new comment, or whatever features I add later down the line... User Id would relate to whoever the notification is for. Type_id and notification type would go hand in hand, so if the notification_type was a new comment, the type_id would be the comment_id to go to. This seems good to me, but i want to be able to notify ALL users when something changes.. like on facebook when you comment on something, you get a notification that someone else has also commented on the same thing after you. I cant seem to figure this out... Help wanted Thanks

  • Why the good append syntax is so ugly, asks python newbie

    Now following my series of "python newbie questions" and based on another question. Go to http://python.net/~goodger/projects/pycon/2007/idiomatic/handout.html#other-languages-have-variables and scroll down to "Default Parameter Values". There you can find the following: def bad_append(new_item, a_list=[]): a_list.append(new_item) return a_list def good_append(new_item, a_list=None): if a_list is None: a_list = [] a_list.append(new_item) return a_list So, question here is: why is the "good" syntax over a known issue ugly like that in a programming language that promotes "elegant syntax" and "easy-to-use"? Why not just something in the definition itself, that the "argument" name is attached to a "localized" mutable object like: def better_append(new_item, a_list=[].local): a_list.append(new_item) return a_list I'm sure there would be a better way to do this syntax, but I'm also almost positive there's a good reason to why it hasn't been done. So, anyone happens to know why?
