  I have an external HDD which I would like to "safely remove". Unfortunately, my system (Windows 7 x64) complains that "the device is currently in use". Using Process Explorer I discovered which process is holding a handle on the device: Obviously, System is not a process that I can just kill and be done with it. I've done a bit of research and this seems to be a common problem, but no solution has been found so far (except for rebooting the machine, which I'd like to avoid if possible). Is there any solution to this problem that I've missed?

  I am trying to set up a mysql master/slave configuration in two EC2 instances. However, every time I reboot an instance, the IP address (and hostname) changes. I could assign an Elastic IP address, but would prefer to use the internal IP address. I can't be the first person to do this, but I can't seem to find a solution. There are a lot of "getting started" guides, but none of them mention how to handle changing IP addresses. So what are the best practices to manage master/slave replication in EC2?

I used VMMap tool (from sysinternals) to take a look at memory, and i saw: private 160000K working set 100000K Obviously, it's much less than 11.8 Gb -So how did it happen? So, question to everyone who has SQLite experience: have you ever had any problems with non-English locales in SQLite? Does one really have to do something to properly handle non-English alphabets? What kinds of problems are expected if I use SQLite APIs as-is? (I'm going to use SQLite on the iPhone, but I guess it's the same across all platforms. It would be nice to handle a transaction for every web request, committing if everything went smooth and rolling back in case of exception. Is this possible? If so, how? I cache these results in memcached as key:/search.cgi?q=foo value: LOCATION:http://www.example.com/foo.html and key:/search.cgi?q=bar value: CONTENT-TYPE: text/html <html> .... .... </html> I can pull the "Content-type...." values out of memcached using nginx and send them to the user, but I can't quite figure out how to handle a returned value like "Location..."   I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

  I just started working for a small-medium size company doing IT support. Maybe 150 or less users. Right now every user has administrative rights to their own machine. This allows them to install updates or whatever else they would like to. I'm tired of getting on user's machines that are bloated with crap they put on themselves. So my first thought would be to take away administrative rights to their computer. This would also have other advantages such as preventing a lot of drive-by malware on the web etc. The problem arises that users are unable to install updates. (Even though I find most ignore these anyway) How do large companies handle software updates on all client machines? EDIT: Windows environment. Most servers are Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. Clients are all Windows. Win XP, Vista, and 7.

  I'm trying to use expect to handle rsync over an ssh shell, but it gets stuck. If I run my rsync command it works (simplified here): It prompts me for my password and copies files to the server: rsync -e ssh -<other_params> If I then enclose that in expect: expect -d -c "spawn rsync -e ssh -<other_params>" -c "expect password:" -c "send mypass\r" It does not execute properly, the program exists and no files are copied. Even the debug mode isn't giving many clues. My best guess is that rsync is spawning the ssh process, and the ssh process is what needs to be interacted with, but send is picking up the rsync process id and sending the input there. Any thoughts?

  I'm stuck with a bit of an annoying problem right now. I've got a Silverlight 4 application (which runs OOB by default). It uses WCF with net.tcp as means of communicating with the server. The client uses a central instance of the wcf client proxy. As long as everything keeps running on the server side, everything's fine. If i kill the server in the middle of everything, i drown in an avalanche of exceptions on the client side (connection lost, channel faulted etc etc). Now i'm looking for a way to handle this in a clean and centralized way (if centralized is possible). The SL app has one central client object sitting in App.cs (public static MyClient Client { get;set;}), which gets initialized on application start. Any idea how to properly handle any connectivity problems on the client object?

  We have a web application that takes file uploads for some parts. The file uploads aren't terribly big (mostly word documents and such), but they're much larger than your typical web request and they tend to tie up our threaded servers (zope 2 servers running behind an Apache proxy). I'm mostly in the brainstorming phase right now and trying to figure out a general technique to use. Some ideas I have are: Using a python asynchronous server like tornado or diesel or gunicorn. Writing something in twisted to handle it. Just using nginx to handle the actual file uploads. It's surprisingly difficult to find information on which approach I should be taking. I'm sure there are plenty of details that would be needed to make an actual decision, but I'm more worried about figuring out how to make this decision than anything else. Can anyone give me some advice about how to proceed with this?

  I have a fairly simple domain model involving a list of Facility aggregate roots. Given that I'm using CQRS and an event-bus to handle events raised from the domain, how could you handle validation on sets? For example, say I have the following requirement: Facility's must have a unique name. Since I'm using an eventually consistent database on the query side, the data in it is not guaranteed to be accurate at the time the event processesor processes the event. For example, a FacilityCreatedEvent is in the query database event processing queue waiting to be processed and written into the database. A new CreateFacilityCommand is sent to the domain to be processed. The domain services query the read database to see if there are any other Facility's registered already with that name, but returns false because the CreateNewFacilityEvent has not yet been processed and written to the store. The new CreateFacilityCommand will now succeed and throw up another FacilityCreatedEvent which would blow up when the event processor tries to write it into the database and finds that another Facility already exists with that name.

  One of the biggest complaints I have heard about MySQL is that it locks up a table if you try to change its schema like adding a column or adding an index. By "locking up the table" does it mean I can neither read nor write to the table? Sometimes for hours? That seems a pretty severe limitations. I was going to use MySQL for my new project but this gives me pause. Is there a workaround for this? How do you handle the task of changing the schema of your production MySQL database? By the way someone told me Postgresql doesn't have this problem. Is that true - I can both read and write to a Postgresql table while changing its schema? Is there any performance penalty incurred?   My Python script (for todo lists) is started from the command line like this: todo [options] <command> [command-options] Some options can not be used together, for example todo add --pos=3 --end "Ask Stackoverflow" would specify both the third position and the end of the list. Likewise todo list --brief --informative would confuse my program about being brief or informative. Since I want to have quite a powerful option control, cases like these will be a bunch, and new ones will surely arise in the future. If a users passes a bad combination of options, I want to give an informative message, preferably along with the usage help provided by optparse. Currently I handle this with an if-else statement that I find really ugly and poor. My dream is to have something like this in my code: parser.set_not_allowed(combination=["--pos", "--end"], message="--pos and --end can not be used together") and the OptionParser would use this when parsing the options. Since this doesn't exist as far as I know, I ask the SO community: How do you handle this?

  Since I decided to let Google handle all my emails for my domain, while the domain is hosted on a 3rd party server, emails send out by a Wordpress installation no longer work. My supposition is that since all email is being routed to Google, my specific account on that server for that domain is unable to send out emails. I definitely wish to keep using google services for handling my emails since it comes with all the advantages connected to a Google account. However I need my Wordpress installation to send out administrative emails. I run my server with CPanel. How to configure that specific account and/or Wordpress to keep it able to send out emails? I don't need people to answer these emails sent out from server (eventually I might set a reply-to-address perhaps) thanks
