• Examples of how to visualize a versioning system?

  My shop is trying to formalize the release management process for an OSS product we maintain. It's a sort of a web development framework/CMS kind of thing, as in it's a product that other projects are built on top of. This makes clear communication about the versioning system especially critical for developers that are using the tool. I'm hoping to find some examples of how best to graph this system so we can communicate it better internally and with outside developers. I know there are lots of standards and best practices around versioning, so I'm hoping this extends to some sort of visual vocabulary as well. As one example, there is a nifty graph at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versioning#Software_Versioning_schemes. Are there any guides out there on how these sorts of things should be designed?

• Salting example in Zend Framework

  Hello all, I am pretty new to the Zend framework and looking to build an application with pretty tight password security. I have been trying to follow the user guides in relation to password salting but haven't had any luck so far. I have setup my database and table adapter (As described in the documentation on the Zend Framework site but it didn't seem to finish the example (or I am not following well enough!) I have started with: $authAdapter = new Zend_Auth_Adapter_DbTable($dbAdapter, 'users', 'username', 'password', "MD5(CONCAT('".Zend_Registry::get('staticSalt')."', ?, password_salt))" ); But from here, what is done with the password salt? I just need an example and I'll be away! Does anyone have an example or point me in the right direction?? Many thanks!

• Reading email content

  Hi, Hope someone may be able to help. What i am looking to do is create a small winform app in c# to read the content of a email from a pop account, and upload key values to a sql automatically. The email format is always the same for each email, eg, First name : Last name : Phone number : etc... Currently the emails are being stored in a pop 3 account however i want a way to reduce having to key the information into the sql by hand. Can anyone advise how i would go about doing this or could recommend some guides? Thanks. Steve

  It has been suggested on Amazon docs http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ among other places, that you can backup your dynamodb tables using Elastic Map Reduce, I have a general understanding of how this could work but I couldn't find any guides or tutorials on this, So my question is how can I automate dynamodb backups (using EMR)? So far, I think I need to create a "streaming" job with a map function that reads the data from dynamodb and a reduce that writes it to S3 and I believe these could be written in Python (or java or a few other languages). Any comments, clarifications, code samples, corrections are appreciated.

  I've been trying to specify a custom naming convention for my database table columns. So far, I have been able to setup a convention for the table's name, but not the actual columns. • Why is it bad to use boolean flags in databases? And what should be used instead?

  I've been reading through some of guides on database optimization and best practices and a lot of them suggest not using boolean flags at all in the DB schema (ex http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Top10SQLPerformanceTips). However, they never provide any reason as to why this is bad. Is it a peformance issue? is it hard to index or query properly? Furthermore, if boolean flags are bad, what should you use to store boolean values in a database? Is it better to store boolean flags as an integer and use a bitmask? This seems like it would be less readable.

• How do I get the sums of the digits of a large number in Haskell?

  I'm a C++ Programmer trying to teach myself Haskell and it's proving to be challenging grasping the basics of using functions as a type of loop. I have a large number, 50!, and I need to add the sum of its digits. It's a relatively easy loop in C++ but I want to learn how to do it in Haskell. I've read some introductory guides and am able to get 50! with sum50fac.hs:: fac 0 = 1 fac n = n * fac n - 1 x = fac 50 main = print x Unfortunately at this point I'm not entirely sure how to approach the problem. Is it possible to write a function that adds (mod) x 10 to a value and then calls the same function again on x / 10 until x / 10 is less than 10? If that's not possible how should I approach this problem? Thanks!

  Assuming a decent understanding of assembly on common CPU architectures (eg: x86), how can one explore a potential path (career, fun and profit, etc) into the field of reverse engineering? There is so little educational guides out there so it is difficult to understand what potential uses this has today (eg: is searching for buffer overflow exploits still common, or do stack monitoring programs make this obselete?). I am not looking for any step by step program, just some relevant information such as tips on how to efficiently find a specific area of a program. Basic things in the trade. As well as what it is currently being used for today. So to recap, what current uses does reverse engineering yield today? And how can one find some basic information on how to learn the trade (again it doesn't have to be step-by-step, just anything which can through a clue would be helpful).

  Hi guys! I have a month of free time and I've decided to launch my own website. It's going to be big and have dymanic content where different users with different roles can perform modifications to the site. Place comments, rate stores, list items, etc. This sound like a perfect opportunity for me to expand my horizons and learn a PHP Framework. I've used PHP bare bones before but nothing too complex. As of now, do you think Kohana is a mature framework to use? I've used Zend in the past for a course in Uni but it sucked horribly, I was new to the MVC model, but Zend had pretty much zero workable tutorials and guides for newbies. That's why I hated it. Where can I go to learn how to use Kohana from a retarded starting point? Thank you very much for your time.

What is that syntax even called (so I can scour google)? When was this standard phased out? Any info is appreciated.

  I'm reading these two pages resources Adding more RESTful actions The Rails Guides page shows map.resources :photos, :new => { :upload => :post } And its corresponding URL /photos/upload This looks wonderful. My routes.rb shows this map.resources :users, :new => { :signup => :get, :register => :post } When I do: [~/my_app]$ rake routes I see the two new routes added signup_new_user GET /users/new/signup(.:format) register_new_user POST /users/new/register(.:format) Note the inclusion of /new! I don't want that. I just want /users/signup and /users/register (as described in the Rails Routing Guide). Any help?

• New to C/C++ Using Android NDK to port Legacy code, getting compile errors

  I have been trying to take some old Symbian C++ code over to Android today using the NDK. I have little to no C or C++ knowledge so its been a chore, however has to be done. My main issue is that I'm having trouble porting what I believe is Symbian specifi code to work using the small C/C++ subset that is available with the Android NDK. Here is a picture of the compilation errors I'm getting using cygwin I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction on how to deal with these errors? For instance is TBool/Int/TUint/RPointerArray/RSocket a Symbian primitive and thats why it wont compile or is it something else? Also what is ISO C++? Any tutorials, guides or tips and help would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I use my multiple cored dedicated server to run my java application?

  I have a game built in a java environment and I use JVM. I have 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz and my server is only using one of those cores... I've tried and searched and I still have no guides to setup multiple cores to run the game like, say 1 core for running the character saving + loading, and 1 core for the server itself, and 1 core for a helper to help other cores that need more power. I don't even know if this is possible but this is all in java the operating machine is windows server 2003 and I've tried so hard I just don't know what to do. May someone please help me! PseudoSchema Diagram (Warning: although pretty, not in a format even remotely approaching ER diagrams! Primary keys are bold, foreign keys are italics.) Given the above set of tables relating Users to Groups to Privileges, and then a set of Activities that can each require a Privilege to perform, how do you find out this: Show me all the Activities that can be performed by User X. That is: User X is a member of groups G and F; groups G and F correlate to privileges P, Q, R and S; show me all the activities that require privileges either P, Q, R or S. How do you do this?

• Rails 3 beta 1 - Nested layouts - LocalJumpError

  Hi Nested layouts do not work in Rails 3. After I hit this I tried Rails Guides Example on a blank project (both ruby 1.9.1 and 1.8.7). LocalJumpError no block given on line <%= yield :stylesheets %. If you remove this line you will get the same error on the next yield statement. Could someone fix(patch) this? It's probably just a matter of calling block_given? in the right place. That would be great. Thanks Added on 4/3: Rails 3 beta 2 released. Problem fixed.

• I have the CSS & JS, how do I convert that to erb for my Rails app?

How do I then take the CSS and JS that I have, and apply it to the app in a 'Rails Way'. i.e. a dynamic way that works nicely.   Scenario: A fairly mature project uses Struts2 and Spring and Hibernate. I say mature because it has been going on a for a while and there are many struts actions written already. • Android Apps Not Showing Up In AVD

  I recently started messing with Android Apps, but I have had nothing but problems trying to get them into the Virtual Device for testing. For some reason, they never seem to show up in the AVD. It has worked one time, but that's it out of hours spent just trying to test one or two very simple apps. I've redone the AVD setup many, many times, trying different settings and what not to no avail. I've followed multiple guides and tutorials to the letter to get it working, but they just refuse to show up in the list. :( Any insight would be appreciated, thank you.

• C++ library for Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM)?

  I'm looking for a C++ library which allows for easy integration of Coordinate Transformation Matrices (CTM) in my application. You might know CTMs from PDF or PostScript. For one project we are using C++/Qt4 as a framework, which offers a QTransform class, which provides methods like .translate(double x, double y) or .rotate(double degrees). After doing some transformations, it would allow me to get all 6 CTM values, which I could feed into a PDF library or use a transformation matrix in export files. Qt's API also allows for arbitrary mapping of polygons (QPolygon), rectangles (QRect) and other primitive data structures into transformed coordinate systems. So basically I'm looking for something similar to what Qt provides, but without the need of using Qt. I know I could do the matrix multiplications myself, but I'm not really interested in doing so, as I'm very sure that someone already solved this problem, so please no links to books or other guides on how to multiply matrices. • Python, implementing proxy support for a socket based application (not urllib2)

  Hey guys, I am little stumped: I have a simple messenger client program (pure python, sockets), and I wanted to add proxy support (http/s, socks), however I am a little confused on how to go about it. I am assuming that the connection on the socket level will be done to the proxy server, at which point the headers should contain a CONNECT + destination IP (of the chat server) and authentication, (if proxy requires so), however the rest is a little beyond me. How is the subsequent connection handled, specifically the reading/writing, etc... Are there any guides on proxy support implementation for socket based (tcp) programming in Python? Thank you
