• Web Filter For Multiple Networks

  I have been using a Barracuda web filter 310 in our network and I have just had enough of it. It does not support trunking and we have several networks that have users that need to be web filtered. (I guess if everyone just did their flippin jobs I would not have this issue) but the management wants me to get it resolved. Does anyone know the top five web filters that are better than the barracuda web filters that support network trunking so that I can have multiple domains and subnets going through it? • Cannot connect to internet with Clearwire modem.

  I'm currently using a Motorola WiMAX modem (CPEi 25725) and cannot connect to the internet. I can connect to the modem at 192.168.15.1 and check its status. It says that it has good/excellent connectivity to the internet and shows all five signal bars. Additionally it has sent and received some WiMAX packets so I believe it is connected to a tower. I'm at a loss for what the problem is. Unplugging the modem, restarting it from software, and restarting my computer (Windows 7) have not helped. Windows still reports that it is not connected to the internet. Alternatively, could this be an ISP issue? I have heard that Clearwire is a not-so-reputable ISP that blocks VoIP, and I was using Skype recently.

• Inaccurate bandwidth limiting in altq queues

  I'm setting up an environment where I have one Linux server, one OpenBSD router and one Linux client and I want to be able to limit how much bandwidth the client should be able to use. I've been performing these tests with "netcat" and "time" (using time to measure the time of the transfer with netcat), and what happens when trying these tests (using the TCP protocol, the queues will for some reason not work with UDP) is that the queues aren't exact at all. For example: when setting a bandwidth limit of 10mbit, the client cannot use more than five mbits, when setting a limit of 100mbit, the client cannot use more than around 50mbit. • How much power supply do I need for my server, and could a shortage be causing my odd crashing?

  I have 5 servers, all with similar hardware (i7, four 2tb 7200rpm drives, two 4tb 5400rpm drives, 430 watt power supply), and lately the machines have been freezing up. This has gotten worse in the last day or so, and I can't pinpoint any explanation. One recent change was adding the two 4tb hard drives. The crashes happen most often while running a large Hadoop job, so I was originally thinking the load was causing some issues, but last night one server just froze without any heavy load on the box (or so I think), other than HDFS (Hadoop's distributed file system) was probably rebalancing itself since two of the five nodes were offline. If I plugin a monitor and keyboard to one of these frozen machines, I can't get any response or feedback on the screen. Any ideas on possible points of failure and/or different logs I can look at to investigate? • How do I make my "volume up" more powerful in Win7?

  My volume up button raises the volume by 1%. Its also not a button, it's a weird 'touch' thing which is really really terrible. If I want to lower the volume, I have to awkwardly rub it for a while. If it were to decrease by 5% or 10% it would be a lot better. Can this be set somewhere in Windows/Keyboard settings? I got close to a solution with Autohotkey, where I could do this: a::Send {Volume_Up 5} which would send the volume up command five times, however when I assign it to the volume key, it forms an endless loop since the Send command sends Volume_Up and parses it at the same time.   I've found some references, when looking for information on WAIK installs of windows 8 of a varient called windows 8 core, that can be installed off the professional edition disk. There's also a mention of it on winsupersite that says The cheapest, called MSDN Operating Systems, costs $699 a year ($499 renewal), and of course includes Windows 8 (Core), Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise. You get five licenses each for Windows 8 Core and Pro, and one Multiple Activation Key (MAK) for Windows 8 Enterprise. What is windows 8 core? Is it the new 'home' edition or something else? What differentiates it from the pro and enterprise editions?

• Do I use the FV function in Excel correctly?

  My task: Create a table: Calculate what the revenues of e-trading will be after five years at 15 percent interest rate if we now have 15 000 EUR. Use the FV function from the Financial Group in Excel. My resolution: =FV( 15%; 5; 0; -15000). My question: Is it correct? I know the task lacks information whether the interest rate is per month or per year. I calculate it as 'per year'. My question is orientated more on the usage of the FV function. I, for example, do not understand why '-15000' and not '15000'. Also why the third parameter has to be 0? Maybe I do it wrong. Please help me solve it! Thanks in advance.

  This is a silly question. In Windows 7/Vista when a user trying to copy multiple file, it looks like he has five options: Copy and Replace Don't Copy Copy, but keep both files Skip Cancel the operation. It looks to me that option 2 (Don't Copy) is the same as 4 (Skip). However, it's kind of strange for Microsoft to put two buttons that perform the same action. I probably miss something. Could you please tell me what I'm missing?

• Is it possible to really delete a Facebook chat message or the whole chat?

  Ok, so a few months ago me and a friend send a whole bunch of smileys to each other in Facebook chat just for fun. I wish I had known at that time how stupid that was. Even until today, every time I open the chat with that contact, the Facebook tab totally locks up when I try to load that chat. It will load eventually after five minutes or so, but it becomes very inconvenient at times. On Facebook Messenger for Android, there's no problem and the chat works fine. I'd like to know if there's any way to completely delete a Facebook chat (not archive them) and start over so it won't load the smileys anymore.

• Why are my log in times taking so long in Linux?

  In recent weeks, login times on my Ubuntu server have started timing out; both through SSH and the local command line console. Examination of the /var/auth.log yields nothing interesting. How can I diagnose long log in times on my Ubuntu server? I should mention, also, that no updates have been performed since the problem has started, and that the /, /boot/ and /usr/ file systems are mounted as readonly. [Edit] This is a stand alone machine, so it doesn't authenticate with Active Directory, LDAP etc. Also, the login prompt is responsive, as is the password prompt. Upon typing the password then CR, I'll timeout. After four a five tries, I will be able to login, although I'm worried this will start taking longer.

  Currently I have a 2mb/s ADSL connection. I signed up for the service more than five years ago. Has technology improved much during that time to allow for greater speed using the same wires? The building I live in is quite old and the lines aren't very good. They weren't able to support 6mb/s service back then. Now I notice that the lowest speed offered by my telco is 10mb/s. The safest way to secure internal web servers is to only connect using VPNs but this seems overkill to protect a DVRs remote web interface (for example). As a compromise, would it be better to use very large ports numbers? (eg. five digits up to 65531) I've read that port scanners typically only scan the first 10,000 ports so using very high port numbers is a bit more secure. Is this true? Are there better ways to protect web servers? (ie. web guis for applications)

• How does one switch tracks in Windows 8.1's XBox Music app?

  XBox Music Now Playing In the XBox Music app (both app and Windows completely updated) I tried playing a folder full of MP3s from a USB HDD. In the screenshot above the track Sometimes is currently playing (indicated by the small green spectrum analyzer icon to the left). Now suppose I want to start playing the sixth track So Hard, how do I do it without pressing the Next Track button five times? Double-clicking (using touch) doesn't work and selecting the track by swiping left or right doesn't show any Play Now option in the bar that pops up from the bottom. Cannot believe the default music player app is so bad! :o

• Lost Linux root password - Recovery mode and init=/bin/bash fail

  I lost/forgot the root password to a server sitting beside me and am trying to reset it. I would rather not have to wipe and re-install or use a Live CD (server is running Ubuntu Server 12.04). What I've tried so far... 1) Boot into "Recovery mode" from Grub2 boot menu then drop into root shell prompt. I am prompted to "Give root password for maintenance". No-go. 2) Change the boot parameters for the main boot option to include "rw" and "init=/bin/bash". When I then boot with Ctrl-X, the screen goes black, and nothing happens (I've waited five minutes). init=/bin/sh and init=/bin/static-sh both do the same thing, while init=/sbin/init boots as normal. Is there anything else I can try to reset the root password? Thank you!

  I'm trying to understand what an MBR is. I know it is used to boot the device, like a compact flash card. If you had five 1GB CF card from SanDisk for a camera, would there be any reason for the manufacturer to have different MBRs? It seems like to me, if for some reason one CF card wouldn't boot, you could copy the MBR from a working CF card and write it to the non-working CF card. Would this MBR for a SanDisk card work on the same size Western Digital card for the same use? Thanks!

• Can I reprogram a microphone input to be used as an audio output? (on XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • Can't connect Tomcat via JMX

  I couldn't connect to one Tomcat server via JMX in a Linux virtual machine. There was no firewall running. All seemed ok. By searching on the web I found out that I have to use the -Djava.rmi.server.hostname property to fix it. It worked, but I don't understand why. My machine has five Tomcat servers running, all of them have JMX enabled in consecutive ports (8008, 8018, 8028...), all of them have the same configuration and only one of them had this issue connecting JMX. No firewall, no -Djava.rmi.server.hostname property in any Tomcat. I understand the problem, but I don't understand why four of my Tomcat servers worked and one of them not. Why is this?

• Is it possible to make a (Windows 7) executable automatically run when I put in my thumb drive?

  I have portable apps on a thumbdrive, and want to automatically run the "menu" app (E:\Applications\Windows\Start.exe) when I insert that drive. I realize (or think I realize, based on a foggy memory of trying to find a way to do this some time ago) that it can no longer be done with the old autorun approach, at least not in Windows 7. But there must be some other way: maybe a daemon process that waits for the thumbdrive to be inserted, and then fires up the .exe file? Maybe a daemon that tries every five minutes or so to launch the menu, and doesn't make a fuss when it's not there. Maybe something else? How can I achieve this?

  I want to build a small warehousing application for my company. We have a central warehouse which distributes to 8 sales points across the country. They insist on an in-house solution. I am thinking to setup a central mySQL db Linux server and have the branches connect to it to store sales. Queries to the db from the branches will be minimum, maybe 10 per hour. However I need all the branches to be able to store each sale data ( product ID, customer ID ) in the central db at peak time at most once every five minutes. My question is can I get away with simple 24mbps/768kbps DSL lines? If not what is the bandwith requirement? Can I rely on a load balancing router to combine additional lines if needed? Can you propose some server hardware specs?

  Does anyone know a kind of software that allows controlling of other computer, but the server can configure permission control? For example, the server can define five users, one of them can control, but the other four of them can only view. Also, file transfer support is required. I've tried TightVNC, it works fine with anything else, but it just does not support user permission control. RAdmin can serve this job, but I wish to find some software which is free. Thank you!
