  • Reflections on SQL Saturday #60 - Cleveland

    - by AaronBertrand
Every time I attend a SQL Saturday , I leave with a rejuvenated and even further reinforced sense of community. Cleveland ( SQL Saturday #60 ) was by far no exception. Allen White ( blog | twitter ), Erin Stellato ( blog | twitter ), Cory Stevenson, Brian Davis ( twitter ), and all others involved put on a fantastic event that endured some crappy weather, parking problems, and significant delays and hardship for at least one speaker - sorry Grant! (Grant wrote about his experience .) I was able to...(read more)

  • Empathy not showing in memenu

    - by dadexix86
I just installed 12.10 and noticed that, even if I added more than one account to Online Accounts and I'm actually using empathy to chat, it is not present in Messaging Menu or in any other point of the tray. This means that if i close it, it remains open but unaccessbile and I have to start it again from dash. How can i integrate it in messaging menu (shouldn't this be the default?) or, at least, make it showing me a tray icon?

  • How does Google+ embed link works?

    - by Drake
I am trying to understand how does embed link works in Google+ Stream. I manage a site and usually every post contains some text and at least an image. But when I try to embed the link to a certain article on my blog the embed feature does not show the article text and images, but instead it shows the header image of my site plus some other header text content. Do you know how should I tag or code the article part so that Google+ parser recognize the right thing I want to show?

  • A little on speaking and evaluations...

    - by AaronBertrand
Buck Woody ( blog | twitter ) just published a great post on session evaluations , and a lot of his points hit home for me. The premise is that the evaluations are not really meant for the attendee or the event organizers, but so that the speaker can get better and make the next session better. In light of this, at least in my opinion, the existing evaluation forms (and the way attendees tend to fill them out) do not achieve this at all. It may be a little more work for events to generate a more...(read more)

  • My schoolmates are playing too much and talk loudly, what should I do ? report them ? [closed]

    - by jokoon
I'm a in a private game programming school class (there are also 3D/art classes in the school), and at least half or two third of the 12 people in my class play at various games (Age of Empires, web games, online card games, etc). They are talking quite loudly on top of that, and I'm getting hard times trying to concentrate: it feels like I'm in a cybercafe full of teenagers. I don't know if I have Hyperacusis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperacusis),

    - by Goward Gerald
What programming language is easiest nowadays, yet demanded in market? By easiest I mean least skill cap (and by skill cap I mean knowing all the frameworks and all the language abilities and constructions. Sure It doesnt mean you need to know 100% of EVERYTHING, but what language lets me get closer to this the most? Please don't suggest me basic, delphi or some other dead/half-dead/useless technologies.

  • Checking update reason after actual update

    - by KaRo
Is there a possibility to find out the reason for at least the last automatic update? When the update-window pops up one can click on the entries and find a statement about what bug shall be fixed with a certain package, or more general why it is updated at all. I want to check for this information afterwards to check if a certain bug or functionality is claimed to be fixed already. thx - robert.

  • Looping 3D environment in shmups

    - by kamziro
So I was watching Ikaruga: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj23K8Ri68E And then raystorm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ4V0G5ykAg After looking at their 3D backgrounds for a little bit, it appears that they use a lot of repeated segments. How would one start with the development with such systems? Would there be editors that can be used (or at least help) with creating the environments? Perhaps a 3D map with splines describing the path of the ship, as well as events on the splines?

  • How to determine the source of a request in a distributed service system?

    - by Kabumbus
Map/Reduce is a great concept for sorting large quantities of data at once. What to do if you have small parts of data and you need to reduce it all the time? Simple example - choosing a service for request. Imagine we have 10 services. Each provides services host with sets of request headers and post/get arguments. Each service declares it has 30 unique keys - 10 per set. service A: name id ... Now imagine we have a distributed services host. We have 200 machines with 10 services on each. Each service has 30 unique keys in there sets. but now to find to which service to map the incoming request we make our services post unique values that map to that sets. We can have up to or more than 10 000 such values sets on each machine per each service. service A machine 1 name = Sam id = 13245 ... service A machine 1 name = Ben id = 33232 ... ... service A machine 100 name = Ron id = 777888 ... So we get 200 * 10 * 30 * 30 * 10 000 == 18 000 000 000 and we get 500 requests per second on our gateway each containing 45 items 15 of which are just noise. And our task is to find a service for request (at least a machine it is running on). On all machines all over cluster for same services we have same rules. We can first select to which service came our request via rules filter 10 * 30. and we will have 200 * 30 * 10 000 == 60 000 000. So... 60 mil is definitely a problem... I hope to get on idea of mapping 30 * 10 000 onto some artificial neural network alike Perceptron that outputs 1 if 30 words (some hashes from words) from the request are correct or if less than Perceptron should return 0. And I’ll send each such Perceptron for each service from each machine to gateway. So I would have a map Perceptron <-> machine for each service. Can any one tall me if my Perceptron idea is at least “sane”? Or normal people do it some other way? Or if there are better ANNs for such purposes?

  • Managing Joomla via Android

Surprisingly, it was only today that I actually looked for possible solutions to write more content for my blog. Since quite some time I'm using my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for all kind of social media activities like Google+, FB, etc. but also for my casual mail during the evening hours. And yes, I feel a little bit guilty about missing the chance to use my tablet to write some content here... OK, only a little bit. ;-) These are not the droids you are looking for But those lazy times are over! While searching the Play Store with the expression 'joomla' I got three interesting hits: - Joomla Admin Mobile! - Joooid - Joomla! Security Checklist After reading the reviews I installed the two later apps. Joomla! Security Checklist The author clearly outlines here that the app is primarily for his personal purpose to have safety checklist at hand at anytime. I guess that any reader of this article has an Android based smartphone or tablet, so that simple app should be part of your toolbox when using Joomla! for your websites. Joooid plugin & app Although I was looking for an app that could work with the default XML RPC interface of Joomla I have to admit that this combination of an enhanced Web service suits me better, mainly due to performance reason. The official website has not only the downloads for Joomla versions 1.5 - 2.5 but also very good and easy to follow step-by-step instructions to prepare your server for the Android app. It will take you less than 5 minutes to get it up and running. For safety reasons, I recommend that you should configure your Web server to have an additional authentication layer on the plugins folder. The smartphone app has the ability to run against HTTP authentication. Personally, I like the look and feel of the app. It is a little bit different compared to the web UI but still easy to use. In fact, this article is the first one written in the Joooid app. At the moment, I only miss the ability to have list tags. Quick and easy Writing full-fledged articles with images, a couple of hyperlinks and some styling here and there should be left to the desktop. At least for the moment. Let's see whether I'm going to change my mind on this during the upcoming months... I'll give it a try, and hope to publish at least once per month to write some content using Joooid. Actually, it would be great to have some feedback about other Joomla! clients in the wild.

  • Kickoff and Krunner to search with less than 3 chars in search field?

    - by Benjamin
Both Krunner and Kickoff in Kubuntu return a list of found items after the user has entered at least three characters in the search field. Usage on Synapse shows that returning a list after one character onwards is faster and efficient. I would like Kickoff and Krunner to behave similarly, by making the return a list of items after entering the first character in their search field. How can I achieve that?

  • Compiling for T4

    - by Darryl Gove
I've recently had quite a few queries about compiling for T4 based systems. So it's probably a good time to review what I consider to be the best practices. Always use the latest compiler. Being in the compiler team, this is bound to be something I'd recommend But the serious points are that (a) Every release the tools get better and better, so you are going to be much more effective using the latest release (b) Every release we improve the generated code, so you will see things get better (c) Old releases cannot know about new hardware. Always use optimisation. You should use at least -O to get some amount of optimisation. -xO4 is typically even better as this will add within-file inlining. Always generate debug information, using -g. This allows the tools to attribute information to lines of source. This is particularly important when profiling an application. The default target of -xtarget=generic is often sufficient. This setting is designed to produce a binary that runs well across all supported platforms. If the binary is going to be deployed on only a subset of architectures, then it is possible to produce a binary that only uses the instructions supported on these architectures, which may lead to some performance gains. I've previously discussed which chips support which architectures, and I'd recommend that you take a look at the chart that goes with the discussion. Crossfile optimisation (-xipo) can be very useful - particularly when the hot source code is distributed across multiple source files. If you're allowed to have something as geeky as favourite compiler optimisations, then this is mine! Profile feedback (-xprofile=[collect: | use:]) will help the compiler make the best code layout decisions, and is particularly effective with crossfile optimisations. But what makes this optimisation really useful is that codes that are dominated by branch instructions don't typically improve much with "traditional" compiler optimisation, but often do respond well to being built with profile feedback. The macro flag -fast aims to provide a one-stop "give me a fast application" flag. This usually gives a best performing binary, but with a few caveats. It assumes the build platform is also the deployment platform, it enables floating point optimisations, and it makes some relatively weak assumptions about pointer aliasing. It's worth investigating. SPARC64 processor, T3, and T4 implement floating point multiply accumulate instructions. These can substantially improve floating point performance. To generate them the compiler needs the flag -fma=fused and also needs an architecture that supports the instruction (at least -xarch=sparcfmaf). The most critical advise is that anyone doing performance work should profile their application. I cannot overstate how important it is to look at where the time is going in order to determine what can be done to improve it. I also presented at Oracle OpenWorld on this topic, so it might be helpful to review those slides.

  • Is there a Railstutorial-quality tutorial for a PHP framework?

    - by tnorthcutt
Is there a tutorial along the lines of Michael Hartl's Rails Tutorial for a (widely used) PHP framework? Obviously there are tons of tutorials for e.g. Codeigniter, CakePHP, Symfony, etc., but I haven't been able to find one that is as extensive as Rails Tutorial is. Ideally, I'd like something that takes you from nothing to building a complete, functioning application with at least a decent amount of complexity.

  • When not to use Google Web Toolkit?

    - by Jas
I'm considering use of GWT on a major in-house web app development project, namely it's major advantage in my eyes is the cross-compilation to Javascript which would (at least theoretically) help my team reduce the size of tech stack by one. However, having been burnt before (like most devs), I would like to hear from programmers who did actually use it on any problems with GWT which would hamper, or limit, it's use within a certain problem domain. When do you not recommend using GWT, and why?

  • 3 tips for SQL Azure connection perfection

    - by Richard Mitchell
One of my main annoyances when dealing with SQL Azure is of course the occasional connection problems that communicating to a cloud database entails. If you're used to programming against a locally hosted SQL Server box this can be quite a change and annoying like you wouldn't believe. So after hitting the problem again in http://cloudservices.red-gate.com  I thought I'd write a little post to remind myself how I've got it working, I don't say it's right but at least "it works on my machine" Tip...(read more)

  • Opinions on .gr (Greek) registrars?

    - by Marc Bollinger
None of the previous questions tackle some of the one-off (or further) countries' registries, beyond .co.uk, .it, et al. or else I'd have found an answer myself. I'm just looking for information for a vanity domain, so obviously I'm alright without an answer, but it's an unasked question (or at least, unanswered), and I'm not exactly in a hurry to give my credit card information over country lines, sight unseen.

  • Third JCP.Next JSR Submitted

    - by heathervc
JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process was submitted for JSR Review on Thursday.  This JSR will modify the JSPA as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on it - at least a year, and probably more.  Read more from the Spec Lead, Patrick Curran, in his latest blog post for more details.

  • What are the most known arbitrary precision arithmetic implementation approaches?

    - by keykeeper
I'm going to write a class library for .NET which provide an implementation of arbitrary precision arithmetic for integer, rational and maybe complex numbers. What best known approaches should I become familiar with? I tried to start with Knuth's TAOCP Vol.2 (Seminumerical Algorithms, Chapter 4 – Arithmetic) but it's too complicated. At least I couldn't get the ideas in a relatively short period of time.

  • Fail to start windows after Ubuntu 11.10 install

    - by user49995
Computer: HP Pavilion dv7-6140eo OS: Originally Win7 I recently decided to try out Ubuntu, and I decided to dual-boot it with Windows 7. First I googled some how-to's, then I downloaded Ubuntu onto a memory stick and made a second partition (I originally only had one partition that I shrunk and used the unallocated space to install onto during the Ubuntu install). During the install I set format type to xt4 (or something, it was the default option), chose the "in the beginning" option and set the last option as "\". The install was successful. Although, when I restarted my computer I weren't able to choose which operating system to start; it went right into windows. After showing the windows logo for half a second before rebooting, I get a blue screen (see bottom of the page). Trying to fix it, I deleted the newly made partition I had just installed Ubuntu onto (seeing it wasn't working either). This made no difference. I proceeded with installing Ubuntu again, so I would at least have a functioning computer, and now Ubuntu works fine (on it now). The only difference on start-up is that I get a Grub window asking me to between several options including Linux and Windows 7 (loader). Now, if I choose Windows 7, I get the message "Windows was unable to start. A recent software or hardware change might be the cause". It recommends me to choose the first option of the two it provides; to start start-up repair tool. The second option being starting windows normally. If I start windows normally, the same thing happens as earlier. My computer does not have a windows installation CD. Although, it has (at least it used to, if I haven't screwed that too up) a 17gb recovery partition. In addition I made an image of the computer onto a external hard drive when I first got it. Though, I have no idea how to use either. If anyone has any idea how I can make windows work again or reinstall it (already backed up my files) it would be greatly appreciated. I still prefer to dual boot between the two functioning operating systems, but I will settle for a functioning windows 7. Thanks a lot for any replies. Blue screen: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove and newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configures and terminated. Run CMKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. • How do I crop a video clip?

    - by Lekensteyn
I've recorded a video using recordmydesktop, but have unfortunately chosen for capturing the whole screen (1600*896) instead of a small part with geometric 900*690. How do I crop this video? Preferably in the editor I'm using, Kdenlive, to minimize quality loss. I've tried the Crop, Pan & Zoom and Scale0tilt effects, modifying the pixel ratio, movie size inside project settings options without success. A step-by-step guide would be preferred or at least some hints.

  • Test Your Web Application Using Free Web Apps Security Tools

The budget restrictions and time to test are common factor, and this is where a handful of free and open source web application security testing tools proves to be practical. The following are tools that must be in your toolkit or at least on your radar, particularly if you're not able to rationalize spitting out the money needed by commercial alternatives. It should be a little more time overwhelming and painful, but in the end you're still going to get good results.
