• The type of programmer I want to be [closed]

  I'm an undergraduate Software Engineer student, although I've decided that pure programming is what I want to do for the rest of my life. The thing is that programming is a vast field and although most of its aspects are extremely interesting, soon or later I'll have to choose one (?) to focus on. I have several ideas on small projects I'd like to develop this summer, having in mind that this will gain me some experience and, in the best scenario, some cash. But the most important reason I'd like to develop something close to “professional” is to give myself direction on what I want to do as a programmer. One path is that of the Web Programmer. I enjoy PHP and MySQL, as well as HTML and CSS, although I don't really like ASP.NET. I can see myself writing web apps, using the above technologies, as well as XML and Javascript. I also have a neat idea on a Facebook app. The other path is that of the Desktop Programmer. This is a little more complicated cause I really-really enjoy high level languages such as Java and Python but not the low level ones, such as C. I use both Linux and Windows for the last 6 years and I like their latest DEs (meaning Gnome Shell and Metro). I can see myself writing desktop applications for both OSs as long as it means high level programming. Ideally I'd like being able to help the development of GNOME. The last path that interests me is the path of the Smartphone Programmer. I have created some sample applications on Android and due to Java I found it a quite interesting experience. I can also see myself as an independent smartphone developer. These 3 paths seem equally interesting at the moment due to the shallowness of my experience, I guess. I know that I should spend time with all of them and then choose the right one for me but I'd like to know what are the pros and cons in terms of learning curve, fun, job finding and of course financial rewards with each of these paths. I have fair or basic understanding of the languages/technologies I described earlier and this question will help me choose where to focus, at least for now.

• loading js files and other dependent js files asynchronously

  I'm looking for a clean way to asynchronously load the following types of javascript files: a "core" js file (hmm, let's just call it, oh i don't know, "jquery!" haha), x number of js files that are dependent on the "core" js file being loaded, and y number of other unrelated js files. I have a couple ideas of how to go about it, but not sure what the best way is. I'd like to avoid loading scripts in the document body. So for example, I want the following 4 javascript files to load asynchronously, appropriately named: /js/my-contact-page-js-functions.js // unrelated/independent script /js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js // the "core" script /js/jquery.color.min.js // dependent on jquery being loaded http://thirdparty.com/js/third-party-tracking-script.js // another unrelated/independent script But this won't work because it's not guaranteed that jQuery is loaded before the color plugin...   Because I hate seeing &gt; or &amp; in my results… Since SQL Server 2005, we’ve been able to use FOR XML PATH('') to do string concatenation. I’ve blogged about it before several times. But I don’t think I’ve blogged about the fact that it all goes a bit wrong if you have special characters in the strings you’re concatenating. Generally, I don’t even worry about this. • No VB6 to VS2010 direct upgrade path

  From the "is this really news?" department... From looking at the currently available versions of 2010, there is no direct upgrade path from VB6 to VS2010. Anyone still using VB6 and wishing to upgrade to VS2010 has two options:  Use the upgrade tool from an earlier version of VS (like 2005 or 2008) and then run the upgrade in VS2010 to get the rest of the way... or rewrite your code. I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader which is the better option. I'd like to take a moment to point out the obvious: A) If you're still using VB6 at this point, you probably don't care about VS2010 compatibility. B) Running your code through 2 upgrade wizards isn't going to result in anything resembling best practices. C) Bemoaning the lack of support in 2010 for a 12 year old version of an extinct programming language helps nobody. This public service announcement is brought to you by the letter C. Thank you.

  MSCRM 4.0 Problem: I'm currently storing xml files in the ISV directory along with my web applications. From a plugin (or potentially a seperate app), I need to find an easy way to navigate to the ISV directory to read these xml files. This routine will be called extremely often, so processing minimization should be a strong consideration. Potential solutions: Registry: There is a registry key called 'WebSitePath' with the data 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\CRM'. Could potentially use this to build the path. (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) IIS directory data: Looping through the DirectoryEntries of path '"IIS://localhost/W3SVC"' I could obtain the the web application where description is equal to "Microsoft Dynamics CRM". (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) Webservice: Create one to read and return the data contained in these xml files The webservice would have easy access to its executing directory. Database: Store the data of these files in the database. Help: Can anyone suggest a simpler solution to obtaining and reading a file from the ISV directory? • Set up Java path for terminal

  Trying to set up a path for the terminal. I already have Eclipse running great. Dual os between windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. However, I would prefer to run everything out of Ubuntu, just not very experienced and all the forums I have searched are not giving me the step by step answers I need to make this happen. I included a screen shot of some information about my version etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated at this point I've put 10+ hours into this and this is my last resort.

• GtkFileChooserButton 'Select Folder' mode returns no path

  I have added a GtkFileChooserButton to my app via Glade. It is set to folder selection mode. When the widget is clicked it shows a dropdown list of Nautilus bookmarks with an 'other' option in the end. A new file chooser dialog is launched when 'other' is clicked. The button is not connected to any other custom file chooser dialog. The connecting signal I am using is 'file-set' and I am retrieving the fullpath of user selected folder using Gtk.FileChooser.get_current_folder (). This setup works fine if user selects a folder from 'other' option. But if a user selects a bookmark from dropdown list, no path is returned. How to solve this? Is there a way to disable this dropdown list and directly go to the filechooser dialog? I want to use GtkFileChooserButton only so that the user can get a preview of his selected folder.

  I've been working as a programmer for the last few years - different companies and freelancing, mostly developing internal-business web applications (well, that's the current model of development, it seems). Besides simple coding I was working on specs, designing applications, and all those around-like things. My question is, what's the career path I should be aiming for? Is it like working on code for the rest of my life? :) Or do programmers make a good manager-position people (I know, those require quite different set of skills) and I should try to improve myself to this direction? I know it's very subjective. Thing is, lately I find myself much more into the designing/working on specs part of the development project then the coding itself. How do you see it? Would you like to go from development to management? Would you like to work on a project with a manager that used to be a coder? Would you like to hire one? :)

You should use the fileinfo class instead of a regex expression or a string split. • What is the right path for PHP includes on a Mac?

  Running Mac OS X 10.5.8, with PHP 5.2.11 Pre-installed. Using Coda 1.6.10. I'm writing PHP files, and then preview them running from file, not server. This was working fine till I tried PHP includes. These don't work as a relative path, only as an absolute from the root of the drive. Is there any way I can use statements like include_once "common/header.php"; without specifying my entire file path like so : include_once "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/neil/Desktop/Website/ColoredLists_v1.0/common/base.php"; ,where ColoredLists_v1.0 is the directory with all the website files in it. I tried solutions like prepending _SERVER[DOCUMENT_ROOT] or dirname(File) to the file paths, but that didn't work as the variables were not set. Is there any easy way to do this, or a configuration I can change so that it looks in a specific directory by default instead of looking at the drive root? Currently, echo_include_path shows .: When I include this line at the start of the script, it works: set_include_path('/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/neil/Desktop/Website/ColoredLists_v1.0'); However, if I want to do this for all my scripts, I can't seem to make the change permanent. Even after I edited the Unix include_path in my php.ini, it doesn't seem to work.

  I've been using BackInTime with Ubuntu 12.04. The disk I was saving to is no longer available. BackInTime insists that I bring it back. (It says "Can't find snapshots folder. If it is on a removable drive please plug it and then press OK") No matter what I've tried, I can't seem to get beyond this point. I've even tried removing BackInTime and re-installing it. The problem persists. How can I change the snapshots path without the missing disk? ---Jack

• Question regarding the SELinux type enforcement file

  In my SElinux te file, I define two new types called voice_t and data_t which certain directories will be classified in the fc file (/data/ will be of type data_t and /voice/ will be of type voice_t). I would like the one SELinux policy to be used for all servers in my network, but, some servers will log VoIP data and other servers will be used to log IP data. I only want the voice_t type to be defined on some servers and data_t to be defined on the others - is this possible? I have tried using an if statement with a boolean expression, and then defining the type when the condition is true but this does not seem to work (it tells me there is a syntax error at 'type data_t'' or 'type voice_t;'). Example: if (data_logger) { type data_t; } else { type voice_t; } Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Luke

• mod_rewrite REQUEST_FILENAME doesn't contain absolute path

  I have a problem with a file test operation in a mod_rewrite RewriteCond entry which is testing whether %{REQUEST_FILENAME} exists. It seems that rather than %{REQUEST_FILENAME} being an absolute path, I'm getting a path which is rooted at the DocumentRoot instead. Configuration I have this inside a <VirtualHost> block in my apache 2.2.9 configuration: RewriteEngine on RewriteLog /tmp/rewrite.log RewriteLogLevel 5 #push virtually everything through our dispatcher script RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^/([^/]*)/?([^/]*) /dispatch.php?_c=$1&_m=$2 [qsa,L] Diagnostics attempted That rule is a common enough idiom for routing requests for non-existent files or directories through a script. Trouble is, it's firing even if a file does exist. If I remove the rule, I can request normal files just fine. But with the rule in place, these requests get directed to dispatch.php Rewrite log trace Here's what I see in the rewrite.log init rewrite engine with requested uri /test.txt applying pattern '^/([^/]*)/?([^/]*)' to uri '/test.txt' RewriteCond: input='/test.txt' pattern='!-f' => matched RewriteCond: input='/test.txt' pattern='!-d' => matched rewrite '/test.txt' -> '/dispatch.php?_c=test.txt&_m=' split uri=/dispatch.php?_c=test.txt&_m= -> uri=/dispatch.php, args=_c=test.txt&_m= local path result: /dispatch.php prefixed with document_root to /path/to/my/public_html/dispatch.php go-ahead with /path/to/my/public_html/dispatch.php [OK] So, it looks to me like the REQUEST_FILENAME is being presented as a path from the document root, rather than the file system root, which is presumably why the file test operator fails. Any pointers for resolving this gratefully received...

• IP-dependent local port-forwarding on Linux

  I have configured my server's sshd to listen on a non-standard port 42. However, at work I am behind a firewall/proxy, which only allow outgoing connections to ports 21, 22, 80 and 443. Consequently, I cannot ssh to my server from work, which is bad. I do not want to return sshd to port 22. The idea is this: on my server, locally forward port 22 to port 42 if source IP is matching the external IP of my work's network. For clarity, let us assume that my server's IP is 169.1.1.1 (on eth1), and my work external IP is 169.250.250.250. For all IPs different from 169.250.250.250, my server should respond with an expected 'connection refused', as it does for a non-listening port. I'm very new to iptables. So far I have only enabled forwarding via sysctl. I will start testing solutions tomorrow, and will appreciate pointers or maybe case-specific examples for implementing my simple scenario. Is the draft solution below correct? iptables -A INPUT [-m state] [-i eth1] --source 169.250.250.250 -p tcp --destination 169.1.1.1:42 --dport 22 --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT Should I use the mangle table instead of filter? • Which tool / technology: System management for databases and dependent services

  I'm looking for advice on how to enable our team to take down and re-start our company systems for maintainance purposes. The scenario includes several Oracle db machines several MS SQL Server machines with multiple instances windows services (IIS etc.) BizTalk EAI solution Apache and Tomcat instances lots of scheduled tasks on win2003 and win2008 machines (physical and virtual). The main focus is on capture all dependencies between said databases and services and tasks connecting to them. At the moment an enterprise class solution is not an option. We are considering developing a solution driven by PowerShell scripts but I hope for some more suggestions.

• Upgrading Fedora to Current Version - Dependent Applications Concerns

  Is it possible to upgrade to Fedora 11 and still keep the server functional (it's running Fedora Core release 6 now, with MySQL 5.0, PHP 5.1 and Apache 2.2)? I have a Customer Relationship Management system on there and it is required on a daily basis. I am trying to figure out if I should upgrade (and whether that will cause huge problems) or if I should start over with a new OS (like Ubuntu) and install the CRM fresh, with updated version of MySQL, PHP, Apache, etc. I ask because I am not really the sysadmin, but have but put in charge of this server.
