• How can I get SLI working with 295.40?

  I've been doing a lot of googling these last few hours and I'm not having much luck. Perhaps I don't know exactly what I am looking for. I just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04LTS x86_64. Looks beautiful! I have two GTX470's in SLI, and I am finally migrating my desktop over given the hopeful gaming support as of late. My laptop has been enjoying multiple distros of Ubuntu for a couple years now. However, new problems come with unexplored territory, here. At first, I only had one working monitor of my two. Over on nvidia-xconfig I fixed that, but the only solution that actually worked was twinview. Just recently I read here that twinview is not compatible with SLI. Sweet. When I try to tell it, oh hey, use a separate XScreen, configure it the way I want it, click save to configuration file, enter my password, then a sudo restart lightdm, it's broken. One screen blacks or whites out (Couldn't tell you the specific conditions for each, I'm dubious at this point,) and I get this huge error dialogue box upon login. Something about incompatible resolutions if I remember right. Though I am sure I set the resolutions for each screen correctly. Anyway, when I try to enable SLI (sudo nvidia-xconfig --sli=On) despite the fact it hates twinview, unity breaks. The sidebar is there, but only one screen works, the mouse is trapped running along the left edge of it, and the background of the sidebar is a solid blue. Anyway, this ended up being entirely too verbose, I'm sorry, but could anyone part some wisdom please? It would be appreciated!

• Password not working for sudo ("Authentication failure")

  Before I mention anything further, DO NOT give me a response saying that terminal won't show password input. I'm AWARE of that. I'm typing my user password in (not a capslock issue), and for some reason it still says 'Authentication Failure'. Is there some other password (one I'm not aware of) I'm supposed to be using other than my user password? I've had this ubuntu before, on another hard drive and I didn't have this problem. • AR242x / AR542x wireless card not working

  My wifi worked perfect until I updated to the latest version of Ubuntu. Now I don't find any wireless connections at all. I have tried lots of guides on the internet but I can't get it to work. I did however start to work once after writing something I don't remember in Terminal, but after rebooting it stopped working again. • Set Position of multiple bodies

  I have a character composed of five bodies which are tied together by a lot of joints. On of them is the overall chassis, to which all forces and impulses are applied to move the whole Character. All in all that works very fine, except one thing: I need to set the Position of the Character so that it get Beamed from one place to the other in one single frame. Unfortunately I cannot get this to work. • Drawing Grid in 3D view - Mathematically calculate points and draw line between them (Not working)

  I'm trying to draw a simple grid from a starting point and expand it to a size. Doing this mathematically and drawing the lines between each point, but since the "DrawPrimitives(LineList)" doesn't work the way it should work, And this method can't even draw lines between four points to create a simple Rectangle, so how does this method work exactly? Some sort of coordinate system: [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] [ ][2.2][ ][0.2][ ][2.2][ ] [ ][2.1][1.1][ ][1.1][2.1][ ] [ ][2.0][ ][0.0][ ][2.0][ ] [ ][2.1][1.1][ ][1.1][2.1][ ] [ ][2.2][ ][0.2][ ][2.2][ ] [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ] I've checked with my method and it's working as it should. It calculates all the points to form a grid. This way I should be able to create Points where to draw line right? This way, if I supply the method with Size = 2 it starts at 0,0 and works it through all the corners (2,2) on each side. So, I have the positions of each point. How do I draw lines between these? VerticeCount = must be number of Points in this case, right? So, tell me, if I can't supply this method with Point A, Point B, Point C, Point D to draw a four vertice rectangle (Point A - B - C - D) - how do I do it? How do I even begin to understand it? As far as I'm concered, that's a "Line list" or a list of points where to draw lines. Can anyone explain what I'm missing? I wish to do this mathematically so I can create a a custom grid that can be altered.

  the domain: is foo.bar.local full hostname is: bla.foo.bar.local short hostname is: bla I installed winbind. here is my smb.conf: name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast here is my nsswitch.conf: hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns wins mdns4 when I try to ping full hostname, I get: "ping: unknown host" when I ping short hostname it works and shows me PING bla.foo.bar.local (10.11.20.135) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from bla.foo.bar.local (10.11.20.135): icmp_req=1 ttl=62 time=49.7 ms *notice that it manages to get the full hostname!? :S now the only reason I need it is cuz I'm trying to reach intranet websites. when I type short hostname "bla" in firefox address bar, it automatically changes it to the full hostname (which is good, right?!) but then it says: Server not found Firefox can't find the server at bla.foo.bar.local. what am I doing wrong? it's driving me nutz. so if you are wandering then yes, it is company intranet I'm trying to reach from ubuntu. If I use my crappy winxp everything is working perfectly well.

• Facebook likes reset after moving to HTTPS (URL manually set in script, though)

  Hi fellow Facebook developers. I've got a question regarding the Facebook like button. We worked on a piece recently that embeds a number of social share buttons (please see the source code below or here on Harvey Water Softeners' website) When the piece was released, it was on HTTP, and received over 2k likes (the URL 'slug' hasn't changed at all). The site was recently migrated to permanent-on HTTPS, and the like data has been reset, and we've been left with 50 new, recent likes. If you see in the source code, the URL is set explicitly to like the HTTP version, which I believe to be correct. Can anyone help me work out what's happened here? • Ubuntu 12.04 wireless disabled even though the direct connectin (thru modem) is working fine

  Need help with my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 system (dual booting along with Win 7), even thoguh I can use internet using the modem and directly plugging it, the wireless network is disabled and it says firmware missing.   I've been engaged as a scout leader in the Scout movement since 1993, working on a local and national level, leading both kids and other scout leaders.Last year, the Swedish Scout Association invited 40000 scouts aged 14-17 years old from 150 countries around the world to go camping for 10 days. I was on the planning team with a couple of hundreds of my closest scout friends and during a couple of years we spent our spare time planning logistics, food, program, etc to give these youths an experience of a life time. It was a big and complex project; different languages, religion (Ramadan was celebrated during the camp) and the Swedish weather were some of the factors we had to take into account. The camp was a huge success, the daily wow factor was measured and people truly had fun and got to know each other. I learnt a lot and got friends around the globe - looking back at the pictures it feels unreal that we managed it.The Java platform as OpenJDK and its' future is a similar project in my mind. With 9 million developers and being installed on 3 bn devices, the platform touches a lot of users and businesses. There's a strong community taking Java into the future, making sure it stays relevant. Finding ways to collaborate in a scalable way is the key to success here. We have the bylaws directing how decisions are made, roles are appointed and how to "level" within the community. Using these, we can then make contributions according to our competence and interest and innovate taking our platform into the future.If you find a way to organize volunteers towards a common goal, solving conflicts, making decisions, dividing the work into manageable chunks and having fun while doing it - there's no end to what you can achieve.

• Unity Launcher missing and Terminal shortcut stopped working

  When I restarted my Ubuntu after it being updated, I found the Unity launch bar was gone. I tried looking up several solutions online, blindly typing in the commands that others suggested, and I found after the umpteenth time rebooting after typing in another foreign command, I found I couldn't even open up the terminal with the Ctrl+Alt+t shortcut either and I have no idea how to fix this. This was the last set of instructions I remember following before terminal stopped opening. Install CCSM sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager And then run it in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) ccsm Then search for "Ubuntu Unity Plugin". If it's not checked, check it. If it is checked you may have another issue. Try restarting compiz: kill -9pidof compiz` This will kill it, it should start up again, if it doesn't, CTRL+ALT+F2 and then type: sudo service lightdm restart to restart the window manager. Go back to the terminal and run: unity --reset

• Working with Git on multiple machines

  This may sound a bit strange, but I'm wondering about a good way to work in Git from multiple machines networked together in some way. It looks to me like I have two options, and I can see benefits on both sides: Use git itself for sharing, each machine has its own repo and you have to fetch between them. You can work on either machine even if the other is offline. This by itself is pretty big I think. Use one repo that is shared over the network between machines. No need to do git pulls every time you switch machines, since your code is always up to date. Never worry that you forgot to push code from your other non-hosting machine, which is now out of reach, since you were working off a fileshare on this machine. My intuition says that everyone generally goes with the first option. But the downside I see is that you might not always be able to access code from your other machines, and I certainly don't want to push all my WIP branches to github at the end of every day. I also don't want to have to leave my computers on all the time so I can fetch from them directly. Lastly a minor point is that all the git commands to keep multiple branches up to date can get tedious. Is there a third handle on this situation? Maybe some third party tools are available that help make this process easier? If you deal with this situation regularly, what do you suggest?

  Did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04 and the sound is not working now. In 12.04 it worked out of the box. • Wired connection not working

• USB ports not working on Xubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Basically, my USB ports on my IBM Thinkpad T43 have stopped working most of the time. Sometimes, they mount and appear in Nautilus, but other times, they aren't recognized. The timeline of events on this laptop for the past few months: Started having problems after using a USB port hub. The port would sometimes work but would be fixed with the occasional reboot. Re-partitioned/Expanded my Xubuntu partition (I have a Windows XP/Xubuntu dual boot). Now the majority of the time, the USB fails to recognize devices. In addition, the few times they are recognized, the device may suddenly disconnect. Things I've noticed: The devices still receive power from my computer (I can charge my ipod..etc..) I can't understand dmesg outputs. I don't know if lsusb is telling me anything useful. My dmesg output is here: http://pastebin.com/KdNxHcFC Things start to get weird at the bottom of the file. • xubuntu keyboard application shortcuts not working

  I am using the latest Xubuntu 13.04 with Xfce 4.10. I have issues while setting "Application Shortucts' from 'Settings Manager Keyboard Application Shortcuts'. Not all custom keyboards shortcuts, which I have added, work. Some do, some don't. Example the command 'xdotool key XF86AudioPause' works perfect from cmdline, but not when I assign this as a shortcut to some key, say 'F11'. Have tried to Google about this, but found nothing. Kindly help. If possible, kindly provide me a cmdline way to set a keyboard shortcut

• Package Manager cannot access repositories but internet is working

  I am currently at a conference in another country and my package manager cannot access repositories. My internet is working fine and I can ping the repositories or go to them in a browser, but package manager fails to access them. If I sudo apt-get update it throws Something wicked happened resolving 'wwwproxy:3128' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) (or Ign's). This proxy corresponds to my proxy at my office back at home, but I have disabled proxy in the package manager. Scanning for best repository doesn't work either, it doesn't manage to connect to any. I have searched for this online and have checked things about my apt.conf file. My apt.conf contains: Acquire::http::proxy "http://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::https::proxy "https://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::ftp::proxy "ftp://wwwproxy:3128/"; Acquire::socks::proxy "socks://wwwproxy:3128/"; If I remove apt.conf (or replace with blank), it makes no difference. I don't see that it should since I am connecting directly (and have set it so in my network options in Package manager network settings) I have also tried some things with resolv.conf (changing name address to primary and secondary dns) to no avail. (im not sure if this would help, following other advice) I am running 12.04. • quickest way to research a set of pages backlinks

  I have a list of 300+ pages (they were chosen based on which pages rank for a keyword I'm interested in) and I want to compile a list all the (known) inbound links to those pages. What's the fastest way to do this? It seems like the only tools out there-- Yahoo Site Explorer, SEOMoz, Majestic, require you to either a) manually export each set of links by hand, or b) get data at the domain level (e.g. Majestic's clique hunter). Does anyone know of any efficient way to do this? I ask because I'm about to write a bunch of code and I don't want to waste my time if there's another tool that will work. I know SEOMoz and Majestic have API's but I'm wondering if there's a more user-friendly option.

• Chameleon effect not working after update

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since it came out and so far didn't have any problems with it. But after I updated (via Update Manager) it yesterday, after every reboot, the launcher color defaults to a blue dash, workspace and trash icon and the rest is black. If I set the wallpaper again manually, then it changes color as its supposed to (chameleon). Any idea why this is? Its really annoying to change your wallpaper every time you logon just to get the "normal" launcher. EDIT The chameleon effect works perfectly for notifications. Only the Launcher and Dash are not changing the color. Thanks.

• Ubuntu audio mysteriously stopped working (12.04)

  Well, I've been a user of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since April now, and it's been a very pleasant experience. I'm a big fan of electronic music, and I tend to have my tracks playing in the background while I do things on my laptop, either in YouTube or in Clementine, my default music player. All has worked very well until now. A couple of days ago my entire PC started to lag really badly. Almost everything was unusable. I opened up System Monitor via the terminal to find a process called "pulseaudio" using nearly 1GB of RAM and over 80% of my CPU. I needed to get some important work done and so I killed the process without thinking. Once again today, pulseaudio decided to lag the hell out of my PC, and so I killed it again. Nothing seemed to happen immediately, but once I opened up YouTube all the audio on videos stuttered a lot, while the videos played smoothly. I restarted Firefox to find that the audio was now not working at all, with both headphones and speakers, and the volume up quite a bit (it's not muted, I've checked that!). A little bit of research later and I've discovered that pulseaudio plays an important part in Ubuntu's audio. Even after restarting my PC the audio still ceases to work in any applications or with any output. The pulseaudio process refuses to start up again. So, can you help me out here? What can I do to fix my problem, and why was pulseaudio doing this in the first place?

• Working Qt controls in a 3d environment

  I need some advice from a Qt expert. The background: I have a 3D engine (ogre3d) working in concert with Qt. The 3D Content is displayed in a widget (using a custom OS window in the client area). I'm able to overlay arbitrary Qt widgets onto the 3d world using the widget render() method and a shared bitmap. This makes a great "heads up display". I can use the standard Qt style sheets and animation using this technique. My goal I'd like to go a step further and allow the user to move these rendered widgets using the mouse. I'd like some advice on the best way to implement this. Possible solutions: The widgets in the HUD are not part of the inheritance chain. I render them manually. They don't get events though. I could add them to the inheritance chain so they get events in the usual way. Then I would need to change them to render to my shared bitmap instead of to the operating system. I looked at this once but couldn't find enough information to implement it. Capture mouse events in the 3D display widget and EMIT them to child controls. I basically create my own event handling chain. Any suggestions on how to implement this? I'm also considering switching to Qt5. I'm not sure how that might affect this decision.
