• Trying to install an old program on Windows XP and getting an error message

  Hello I'm trying to install an older application named headline.exe. I'm getting an error message saying the the program has to end and asking if I want to notify Microsoft. The event logs says "Faulting application _untitled.exe version 1.0.0.1591, faulting module flash6.ocx, version 6.0.88.0, fault address blah blah blah. I uninstalled flash and installed version 6 of Flash and nothing changed. Any thoughts? Thanks

• Update MS Windows XP via batch script

  Is it possible to update WXP using a batch script? Basically, I would like to run a batch script, which installs all important updates in the background accepting any dialog boxes which need user interaction. EDIT 1: I know I can enable the "Automatically download and install" option to do this, but I have about 100 computers to do, so it would be nice if it can be done via a batch file. That way, I can use the software we already have to run a batch file on all computers with a single click.

  In our cluster, RedHat4 & 5 machines, if someone locks the computer and walks away no body can use it. Is there a feature in RedHat5, Gnome, KDE etc that would allow for the option of switching users at the lock screen, so more than one person can be logged in? Thanks, rd42

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists.   Is it possible to create a script/live distro that replaces some system32 files? To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?

• Log all files saved on XP system.

  I have a user that frequently saves items (or even forgets to save) to places that he forgets. Usually a simple search finds them, but not always. Is there any way to log/track the most recently saved files? It would be great to be the last "saved" files as the recent documents feature is unreliable if he constantly opens documents in his search for the file he just saved. Alternatively, any ideas on how to control this situation?

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

• Cannot Delete "Account Unknown" account in Windows XP SP3

  If I Right click on My Computer, Select Properties, then click on Advanced-User Profiles-Settings, I get a list of user accounts on my machine and I see a few that are "Account Unknown" in there with large profiles and I want my space back. I am assuming this is because these users are long gone and AD no longer recognizes their SIDs. The problem is that the Delete button is grayed out, but only for the accounts, the ones that are recognized, I can delete jsut fine. These accounts do not show up in Computer Management at all, and I am an administrator on my machine - any ideas on how to delete them?

• Windows XP Pro 'Connect to' logon box greyed out with Guest

  Have a machine i've just nuked and paved to be used in a public enviroment, yet still connected to a Workgroup. Would like it to prompt for a logon when accessing any of the network shares as different departments will be using it. It does prompt for a login but the username field is greyed out. Have disabled simple file sharing, disabled guest account, changed Local Security Policies (Network access Sharing and Security model to 'classic') all to no avail. A google around has lots of other people with the same issues, lots of 'fixes' with very few feedback. Of course none of these work for me! :)

• Unable to install .NET Framework 3.5 to my XP machine

  I have an application that requires .NET 3.5, but I can't install it. The installer quits saying "it has encoutered a problem during setup. If I look at some of the error logs in the tmp directory I see. Error occurred while initializing fusion. It seems that I have 2.0 SP1 installed. Any ideas how I can get it to work? I went through the temp directory and found these references to the error. Any ideas? • cpu usage nearly 100 constantly windows xp sp3

  When running some heavy applications like games or virtual box for some time.. the cpu usage is normal for some 15 mins and then suddently cpu usage increases. even after i quit the heavy apps and when i start some other apps, the cpu usage of the new opened application is also very high.. this continues until i reboot the system. There is single particular process occupy more cpu. All the processes cpu usage is little high than normal.. Any solutions?

• Cannot fix induced 0x7b error on XP

  I'm writing a tool that will automagically fix the STOP 0x7B error that occurs when windows cannot access the hard drive due to driver issues (usually). I've wrote a tool that does everything the Knowledge Base article says to do. But it's not working. I'm inducing the issue by changing the bios SATA controller to AHCI, then moving it to another computer and updating it's registry. When I move it back to the other computer, nothing new happens. Can someone tell me what more I need to do?

• How to recover from locked down XP Home computer

  We've got a Kiosk machine provided to us by a manufacturer. The video card is flaky, so I want to replace it with another card we have on hand, rather than shipping across the country. The problem is that they have policies in place that locks the system down to a point where only the manufacturers demo works on the computer so I can't install drivers for the newer card. I know pretty much nothing about windows policies or the policy editor. Am I fighting a losing battle trying to replace thi scard?

However, my headset microphone is quiet at the best of times, and no matter what combination of input and output volume settings I use, my voice is consistently inaudible. Know of a good fix for this? Should I be looking for a decent audio mixer--and if so, do you know of one that's as effective as it is free?

• Windows XP, have to use ctrl+alt+delete to log on as local administrator

  Hey, I have a weird issue, a user was was logging into a laptop using the local admin account which was working fine. I had to create another account on the system, which was also an admin account, when this happened the 'administrator' account disappeared from the 'choose an account to login with' screen. A quick workaround is available, if the user presses ctrl+alt+delete it brings you to the screen where you can type in the username and password, so by manually typing 'administrator' it can log in. Normally this would be easily fixed, I figured the admin account had somehow been disabled from the local system, but i checked all settings and it is setup fine. The laptop is not part of a domain, so I used the management console to delete the new account and all that succeeded in doing was making the 'choose an account to log in with' screen display no accounts to choose. So far I see nothing else to fix it, the option to change the default logon screen to style where you type the username and password also seems to be missing. any ideas?

• Running MySQL as SYSTEM Service in Windows XP

  I have this strange problem where I create a database in MySQL and I need to restart mysqld but I can't seem to do it with info the MySQL docs. Then, I kill it from the Task Manager and I can't restart it. When I look at the process, it is run by the SYSTEM, rather than me. When I run mysqld it starts the process by me, not the SYSTEM. Am I shutting it down incorrectly? IS there a way to start this daemon as the SYSTEM?

• Win XP shut down window very slow to appear

  Hi all, I click Start-Shut Down and the Shut Down window takes 5 minutes to appear. This problem doesn't happen after a fresh boot, it only happens after I have been logged on for awhile. I am using a MacBookPro with Bootcamp. The machine actually shuts down quickly, its just really slow to bring up the shut down window. Basically I would like to know if: 1) Anyone has any ideas why this would happen 2) Who owns the "Shut Down" window (i.e. what happens on the OS after I click the Shut Down icon in the start menu) I've tried perusing the task manager to try and see if any processes look suspicious, but to no avail. thanks, H

  I'm not exactly the most tech savy so please bear with me. I am trying to connect through a proxy with my Virtualbox accounts. Initially I wanted to just set the browsers in each virtualbox under a proxy but my boss said that it can probably be done right off the bat under the virtualbox accounts itself. Could anyone guide me on how to do this? All the instructions online state that their should be a proxy setting in preferences however all I see is a Network Adapter tab. Thanks!

• Windows XP crashes by GT610 driver (nv4_disp)

  I have a PC which was working fine but one day screen went dark and nothing was shown. I thought the problem is graphic card, so I replaced it with new one. I bought a new graphic card (GeForce 610) and installed it on my system. I formatted my hard-drive and installed a fresh Windows XpSp3 and its drivers. Everything was fine but after installing graphic card's driver, I got an error saying windows got stuck in an infinite loop and it couldn't get out (in nv4_disp). I uninstalled it and downloaded its last version and installed it. Unfortunately, I got the same error and windows restated! Here's my system: Pascal Motherboard PT880PRO Intel CPU Windows XPSp3 I searched this issue on the internet and I found bunch of suggestions (from cleaning hardware to installing latest version of its driver) but nothing help! • How to set up multiple video cards in Windows XP

  All I am trying to do is run a three monitor setup, two widescreens on the good card at high res and a third smaller monitor at 1024x768 that I watch continuously updating info in. I have a Dell Vostro 200 with an HIS Radeon HD 4670 video card in the PCI-e slot. I need an additional video card that will work in an available PCI slot. I Had a Nvidia GeForce 5200 that was installed but due to what I'm assuming was a compatible driver issue (because it was Nvidia not ATI) it wouldn't run at more than 640x480 4bit color when installed simultaneously with the HIS card. Previously I used the Nvidia with the onboard Intel video to run a third monitor, but now that the HSI uses PCI-e the onboard has to be disabled. I tried a Radeon 9200 PCI card that I found (microsoft made I think) with it and only that or the HIS card could be enabled at the same time. When both were in the HIS card said "The device cannot start". SO, based on the fact that I got the Nvidia to work (although very poorly) with the new HIS Radeon HD 4670 PCI-e I know it's possible, just don't know what type of card I need to use. Any ideas?

• Windows XP takes over 5 minutes "saving settings" on logout or shutdown

  Basically the comp in question is taking ages to log out - but only from the main account. I tried creating another account on the system and it only took seconds to log out. However, there seems to be no specific reason for this. Could it be that the registry is fragmented or something? How would I test what the problem is?
