• LinkedIn / Twitter / Facebook as OAuth and OpenId use

  Firstly I understand OpenId is for authentication and OAuth is for authorisation and unlike other questions on the site I am not asking which should be used for which but if anyone can advise a solution for my issue. I want to allow users to login to my site via their LinkedIn/Twitter/Facebook account once logged in say via LinkedIn they could also then authorise their Twitter and Facebook account as a optional login method. This would allow the user to authenticate via any of the three but end up with their user account on my site as the end result. I also want to use the authorisation they have provided to get basic user details (profile pic/name etc) and post status updates. I don't want to ask a user to login with their account via openId then have to authorise the same account again via oauth to allow my site to publish to their service feed and have to do this for each of the 3 services. Any ideas or issues to this issue Lee

• Question on Win32 LogonUser API and the Logon Type

  We have developed a ASP.NET web application and has implemented a custom authentication solution using active directory as the credentials store. Our front end application uses a normal login form to capture the user name and password and leverages the Win32 LogonUser method to authenticate the user’s credentials. When we are calling the LogonUser method, we are using the LOGON32_LOGON_NETWORK as the logon type. The issue we have found is that user profile folders are being created under the C:\Users folder of the web server. The folder seems to be created when a new user who has never logged on before is logging in for the first time. As the number of new users logging into the application grows, disk space is shrinking due to the large number of new user folders getting created. Has anyone seen this behavior with the Win32 LogonUser method? Does anyone know how to disable this behavior?

• Authlogic: Create records on other users' behalf

  Hi Using Authlogic, what is the best way to create a record in rails on other users' behalf? Description: I have a c++ server which handles Tcp connections from many c++ clients, and I want the c++ server to create a new record in the rails database using its REST api. However, the c++ server needs to be authenticated before creating that record. What I want is to attach the original user ID (from the c++ client) to the record (but not the servers) so I know from which user the record came from. One way is for the c++ client to send its persistence token over to the c++ server which sends that token as a parameter to the create action, does that make sense? or are there maybe some better ways to do this? • Weird problem: IE8 user can't authenticate with web service

  I have an asp.net app. It has a page that requires authentication. The authenticated user can view the page because he/she is authenticated. The page makes a jQuery Ajax call to a WCF service. The WCF service checks that the user is authenticated via HttpContext. I have a user that is using WinXP and IE8. This user can authenticate to the page, but when the Ajax call is made from the page to the wb service, the user recieves my "session not authenticated" message on the page, generated by the service and displayed on the page. When I use the same OS/browser combo, the page and service work just fine, as expected; no errors. What option in this user's IE settings would cause this behavior?

• Twitter xAuth vs open source

  Hi I am developing an open source desktop twitter client. I would like to take advantage on the new xAuth authentication method, however my app is open source which means that if I put the keys directly into the source file, it may be a vulnerability (am I correct? The twitter support guy told me). On the other hand, putting the key directly into a binary also doesn't make sense. I am writing my application in python, so if I just supply the pyc files, it is one more seconds to get the keys, thanks to the excellent reflection capatibilities of Python. If I create a small .so file with the keys, it is also trivial to obtain the key by looking at the raw binary (keys has fixed length and character set). What is your opinion? Is it really a secutiry hole to expose the API keys?

• How do I reuse code in Zend Framework

  I am working on a web application which requires the user to login before they see or do anything. No part of this app should be accessible without being logged in. (Except of course, the login controller) Currently I am using sessions to handle the authentication and I have put code in each controller in the init() function to check if their session is valid. This was a temporary workaround, but it is redundant and inefficient. I would like my init() function to be similar to the following, but I am not sure how to achieve it: public function init() { // If user not logged in redirect to login controller $myLibrary = Zend_Library_MyLibrary(); $myLibrary->CheckAuth(); } So my question really has two parts: Where is the best place to store code that will be used in multiple controllers?   Hello everyone, In my previous understanding, for a web site, only login user of a web site (no matter what login/authentication approach is used) could have cookie as persistent identifier, so that if the user close the browser, open browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user. But I learned recently that it seems for non-login user, there could still be a cookie associated with the user (after the user close browser, and then open the browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user), and it is called browser cookie? Is that true? If it is true, who is responsible to set the browser cookie? i.e. need some coding/config at web server side, client browser configuration (without coding from server side), or both? How could web server access such cookie? Appreciate if any code samples. thanks in advance, George

• Is Eclipse Remote System Explorer broken on Windows?

  I have the following setup on Windows 7 Ultimate x64: Eclipse Indigo 2.7.2 (Build: M20120208-0800) Remote System Explorer 3.3.2 (see screenshot) (Oracle/Sun) Java 1.6 Update 31 (x86) Despite all my best efforts I am unable to connect to a remote system (a Centos 5.6 server on my local LAN) using a Remote System Explorer SSH connection - I've tried both password authentication and using my SSH private key. Here is a screenshot of both the Eclipse error dialogue and what is logged in my /var/log/secure log file: /var/log/secure: Apr 1 12:00:21 nagios sshd[6176]: Received disconnect from 172.16.3.88: 3: com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail When I connect for the first time I do get prompted to verify the authenticity of the remote host and the RSA key fingerprint. But that's as far as things go. Performing the same operation with the same credentials on my Fedora Core 16 box (also running the same version of Eclipse and Java) to the same server is successful. This leads me to believe that RSE SSH support on Windows is either broken or there's some piece of the SSH-on-Windows puzzle I'm missing. Is this the case?

• Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

  I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this?   Sometimes, I came across certain web development framework which doesn't provide authentication feature as in Authenication ASP.NET I was wondering what is the security measure needs to be considered, when implementing "Remember Me" login feature, by hand coding? Here are the things I usually did. 1) Store the user name in cookie. The user name are not encrypted. 2) Store a secret key in cookie. The secret key is generated using one way function based on user name. • ODBC Linked server in sql 2005 doesn’t work from remote box

  I have a dev workstation with sql 2005 installed and in it I created a linked server to a odbc connection to a clarion database. I can run select statements against it inside sql Mgt studio. When I take a second workstation and connect to the sql on the first box using sql mgt studio, then try the exact same query I get OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "liveclarion" returned message "[SoftVelocity Inc.][TopSpeed ODBC Driver][ISAM]ISAM Table Not Found". Any thoughts? It appears to have the same functionality on a second sql server. No remote sql mgt studio connect success in queries against my linked ODBC clarion DB. All done with windows authentication and the same AD user.

• How do I identify an OpenID provider as requiring Directed Identity?

  I am trying to extend the LightOpenID PHP library to "discover" that an identity provider requires Directed Identity. This should be easy as the library is beautifully well written and wonderfully clean but I don't know how to identify these types of providers. A couple things I've tried: I looked through the OpenID specs on the subject but came up empty handed. Looked through the PHP OpenID library but couldn't figure out how this info was gathered during the discovery. Dumped all the data (headers and content) that came from the servers by injecting some code in LightOpenID but didn't see anything helpful. Searched Google and Stackoverflow, naturally. How do providers identify themselves as requiring "Directed Identity" authentication? Surely there is a carefully defined specification for this... somewhere. Anyone know where I can find more on this?

• How do I consume a COM+ local server from C#?

  I have a web application from a company that has gone out of business. We're looking to extend the web app a bit with some asp.net functionality. The web app was written as an ISAPI application in Delphi, and uses COM+ to talk to the SQL Server and handles things like session management and authentication. So, in order to get the current user and other details, I have to use the undocument COM+ components. I was able to dig out the type library and auto generated IDL, but at this point i'm lost in creating a .NET proxy class for this. Is there a way to autogenerate the .net COM+ proxy either from the .dll itself (extracting the typelib info) or from the IDL? Note: These seem to be simple COM style objects hosted in COM+ servers, no subscriptions or transaction monitoring..

• How to implement a good system for login/out into a webapp

  I am one of the developers at PassPad, a secure password generator and username storage system. We're still working on it, but I have a few questions on the best way to implement a secure login/out system. Right now, what we plan on doing is to have the login system save a cookie with the username and a session key, and that's all that serves as authentication. The server verifies the two to match. Upon login/out a new key is created. This is a security-related webapp and while we don't actually store any information that might make the user queasy, because it is security-oriented it makes it a necessity for us to at least appear secure in a way that the user would be happy with. Is there a better way to implement a login/out system in PHP? Preferably it won't take too much coding time or server resources. Is there anything else I need to implement, like brute-force protection, etc? How would I go about that?

• Cookie: ASP.NET SessionId Issue

  I have a load generator that appends a ASP.NET_SessionId to the Cookie when making a Soap test call from Machine A to Machine B. Cookie: ASP.NET_SessionId=gf0ouay24sdneiuicpiggn45; However, when I'm running the soap test hitting my local server it doesn't have an ASP.NET_Session variable in the cookie. Why is this happening? UPDATE: I'm getting this issue now on the server: Forms authentication failed for the request. Reason: The ticket supplied was invalid. • SQL Server 2008 - cannot register default instance MSSQLSERVER

  Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2008 Developer on Windows 7 64 bit. In Management Studio I cannot register the default instance MSSQLSERVER, it cannot find it although the service is running. I get the message: Cannot connect to PHOENIX\MSSQLSERVER. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 87) However Management Studio does show the SQL Server 2005 Express instance (that was installed with VS 2008 Pro) which appeared as already registered. I an using Windows Authentication as I installed it in mixed mode. Any ideas would be appreciated, many thanks paul

I've been using django-registration for user registration so far but I would really like to allow users to login to my site using their Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc accounts. I am using addthis sharing buttons. I just noticed they introduced a social sign in solution. The idea seems great, you integrate your authentication system with their service once, and your users can login via all of the popular social networking sites. Has anybody integrated addthis social signin plugin with a django website? How can you use it along side django-registration? Are there any similar, alternative solutions?

• flash - django communication -- amf, xml, or json?

  We are considering to develop a Flash front-end to a web application written using Django. The Flash front-end will send a simple "id" to the server and in response receive a couple of objects. The application will be open only to authenticated users. To the extend of my current knowledge (which is basic for Flash) we can either use AMF or take an XML or JSON approach. AMF seems to have an upperhand as there are examples out on the internet showing it can cooperate easily with Django's authentication mechanism (most examples feature pyAMF). On the other hand, implementing a XML/JSON based solution may be easier and hassle free. Guidance will be much appreciated.

• Login time out when calling opening a new window from modal popup (ASP.NET)

  I have a weird problem. I have a window, on a button click I open a modal popup (using ModelPopupExtender), that let's you select a few criteria and then click a submit button. On click of submit button, I open a new window (using window.open()) that shows the status of what happened to your submitted request. However, every time this status window is opened, it goes to the login page. I am thinking the modal popup can't pass the authentication cookie to the newly opened window, but I'm not sure. • How do i get out of the habit of procedural programming and into object oriented programming?

  Hiya all, I'm hoping to get some tips to kinda help me break out of what i consider after all these years a bad habit of procedural programming. Every time i attempt to do a project in OOP i end up eventually reverting to procedural. I guess i'm not completely convinced with OOP (even though i think i've heard everything good about it!). So i guess any good practical examples of common programming tasks that i often carry out such as user authentication/management, data parsing, CMS/Blogging/eComs are the kinda of things i do often, yet i haven't been able to get my head around how to do them in OOP and away from procedural, especially as the systems i build tend to work and work well. One thing i can see as a downfall to my development, is that i do reuse my code often, and it often needs more rewrites and improvement, but i sometimes consider this as a natural evolution of my software development. Yet i want to change! to my fellow programmers, help :) any tips on how i can break out of this nasty habbit?
