• What is the best apache/linux config for this server?

  2 x Intel Xeon-Woodcrest 5130-DualCore 2GB RAM Ubuntu 10.04.0-64 In the worst case this box will be serving ~300 people requesting ~700 images at the same time. The images are around 5K each. I can upgrade or change the machine if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

• Ubuntu maverick username and password works with ssh but not with smb when I connect from MacOS 10.6.5

  I have an Ubuntu Maverick desktop that I can easily connect using ssh but when I want to see the shared directories using "go to server", MacOs connects to the Ubuntu machine and I can see the shared directories but when I enter my username and passord to get access it complains about me entering wrong username and/or password. Any ideas? What more information would you need to give me some advise? Is there a step by step how-to manual to get this done? thanks

• recursively delete empty directories in windows

  I have a directory on my Windows 7 machine that has hundreds if not thousands of sub-directories. Some of them have files, some do not. I want to delete all the empty directories. Looking at the del and rmdir DOS command, it does not look like you can recursively do this without deleting all the files. Is there a way to do this from the command line? Or is there a tool that would do it for me?

• ping preload is not permitted, what could be the reason?

  I am trying to ping one of my local host and checking CPU process to see how "Ping of death" attack behaves. I tried to ping my other PC which is in local network with 192.168.44.2 IP Address. I tried this, ping -l 5000 192.168.44.2 and I got error like this, ping: -l flag: Operation not permitted I am on MacOSX Lion. How can I remove this flag so machine can let me ping with preload? • DNS for private network - should router be the DNS server?

  I want to set up BIND for a private subdomain on a private network, like in the question here: How to configure bind for a private subdomain? My question is this - should my (linux) router act as the DNS server for this? Or should I have a seperate machine on the network acting as the DNS server? Does it not matter as long as all the machines on the network are configured to resolve to the internal DNS server?

• Lightweight ad-blocker for firefox

  On a old machine (512 MB RAM) I am currently running ubuntu jaunty and firefox 3.0.15. I tried the ad blocker addon add block plus but it eats lots of RAM (300 MB). Is high memory load of this add-on a bug, which is fixed in a newer version or just normal? If so, why is the memory usage so high? Is there another ad blocker add-on for firefox or another browser- add-on combination for linux (ubuntu jaunty) which uses significant less RAM?

  I'm provisioning a Vagrant virtual machine with Chef and it's amazing, but I'm unsure where I should put code to configure software installed by 3rd-party chef recipes. For example, I'm installing NGINX with this recipe but I need to configure the default virtual host to serve content from /vagrant/public instead of /var/www/nginx-default. Should I change the template of the 3rd-party recipe, or create another recipe that reconfigures it?

• [Vista] System logs out the current user automatically after 30-40 mins.

  I am using Windows Vista, and i am able to logon to my machine, all works fine. But after every 30-40 mins of log-on the system automatically logs-off the current user (closing all the applications, ofcourse).   Here's my situation: On my network, most of the clients are on an outside router. Router 1 192.168.1.1 | | - Client | Router 2 192.168.1.2 to router 1, | 192.168.2.1 to clients within | Samba server - 192.168.2.25 I cannot figure out how to get clients under router 1 to access the Samba shares in router 2. I have forwarded ports 139 and 445 to the appropriate machine in router 2 but machines in router 1 still cannot access the server. How would I set this up?

  I've just created an Automator workflow and I'm using crontab to execute it at night. The problem is that, after a while, the machine is going to sleep and a password is required (this is the intended behaviour). Unfortunately, Automator seems to be unable to perform the task when the password is required. It works like a charm if the "password required" dialog is not displayed (before the sleep). Any suggestion on how to solve this?

I am able to ssh in during the prompt, but other services (like http, ftp, etc) will not run until the password is succesfully entered in at boot. However, ssh does not show the same password prompt that master console shows. How do I enter the LVM password remotely on boot?

• git-daemon fails on VM suspend and resume

  I have Gitorious running on a Centos 5.3 install on a VMWare virtual machine under VMWare Server. Everytime we take down the server via suspend to back up the image, and resume the VM, the git-daemon dies. All my other processes continue to function without any problems, this one process dies and has to be manually be restarted. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening, or how to make sure this process never dies off?

• What's the importance of restoring SQL Server system databases (model, master, etc.)?

  I had to restore some production databases to a different drive on the same Microsoft SQL Server 2005 machine. That worked fine and the application using the databases is back online.
