  • Sound has stopped working after upgrading to Windows 8

    I upgraded my (fairly new, about 2 months old) computer to Windows 8 last night, and now the sound has stopped working across the entire machine. I have checked using multiple programs (iTunes, YouTube, World of Warcraft, etc) and multiple output devices (speakers and headset), checked the soundcard drivers (Asus Xonar DG 5.1), checked the volume mixer to ensure I wasn't just having a brainfart and had the sound muted, but nothing's working. Does anyone have any advice on what could be causing this? Thanks Max

  • Difference to connect to LDAP by BindDn or by username

    We have an application which can only connect to a LDAP (AD) by using the BindDn. When I try to connect from the server which host the application using a simple LDAP client (LDAPAdmin) it connects sucessfully. Recently the sysadmin change the AD (probably to a new machine and new version) but we cannot connect to it using the BindDn anymore, we did not change anything on the settings (BindDn string) except the ldap url pointing to the new server. Is there a special setting on the LDAP server side to enable to connect using BindDn?

  • Unable to share a folder between Windows 7 and Ubuntu (running in VMWare)

    I have installed vmware toolbox in ubuntu (guest OS). I tried to share a location from the settings of the virtual machine. But when I click Ok, the following error in thrown in the host (Win 7) OS. "Unable to update run-time folder sharing status: Unknown error." The location is not showing up in /mnt/ What could be the reason? P.S I have vmhgfs process running in my Ubuntu VM. I was following this method.

  • Routing between same network

    Hi In this scenario there is point -to point serial connection between R6 and R7 , there is router R10 whose interface F0/0 is having ip address of 10.1.1.2/24 and there is a host machine (R9) with ip address 10.1.1.1/24 which is running an application, My problem is that Application on R9 will only work when it will get its Gateway as 10.1.1.1/24 which is of router (R10) , is there any way i can make R6 and R7 transparent for R9 and R10, Or any type of routing using GRE / Route-map or any other way.     I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Machine with 1 physical hard drive. I have an exact copy of the hardware of it, which I intend to use a a redundant backup in case my server fails (hardware or software). I'd like to routinely "clone" my production server's hard drive, so that when it fails, I'll just swap it with the latest clone. Is this even possible? If it is, what would be the simplest way to do this?

    Since people are getting unauthorized access to my Windows Server (bruteforced over several months..), I'd like to set up a whitelist for RDP access. I have tried the following with Windows Firewall inbound rules: This still allows other users to connect through RDP. Is there any way to block such unauthorized access through a whitelist? EDIT: The firewall is enabled, and it's the only firewall running on the machine. Rules like allowing port 80 traffic behave correctly.

  • OS won’t boot during Visual Studio 2010 install on vista 64

    I am installing Visual Studio 2010 on a vista 64 bits machine. During the install it asked for a restart. Since that, vista won't load. I tried restore to previous good configuration - didn't help. I am only able to boot it using safe mode with networking. When I did that, it continued the vista part of the install (the screen with the 3 out of 3 updates) but after that when I restarted again - still fails.

    In a batch file I need to extract a month, day, year from the date command. So I used the following, which essentially parses the Date command to extract its sub strings into a variable: set Day=%Date:~3,2% set Mth=%Date:~0,2% set Yr=%Date:~6,4% This is all great, but if I deploy this batch file to a machine with a different regional/country settings, it fails because month, day and year are in different locations. How can I extract month, day and year regardless of the date format?

  • Mouse curser gets "weird" when I move it between different monitors

Sometimes when I have a fullsreen application running on my main monitor and I am moving the mouse curser between the two monitors, the curser gets corrupted. You cannot see that it is a curser anymore. To fix it I have to restart the computer. Has anyone heard about this problem before? How do I fix it without rebooting?

  • Accessing temperature data on ESXi5.1?

    For ESXi5.1 (VMWare vSphere) images, I can see temperature data on the vSphere user interface (under Monitor / Hardware Status). I tried scouring the available snmp data using snmpwalk, but can't find the data anywhere in there. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anybody know the right MIB for temperature data? Otherwise, ow can that data be accessed? By the way, this is a machine installed from an image provided by HP.

  • Opening a specific port on Mac

    I need to open a specific port on my mac client (because when I try to connect from server it says "target machine actively refused it ").My problem though is I cannot find a way to add a specific port on my latest Mac OS. I go to system pref-securtiy &privacy-firewall- turn it on (FWIW connection didnt work when I had turned it off)-Firewall options-"+" This gives me an option to add some application but not a port .Can someone point me to the right place to add the port?
