  I am trying to host multiple sites on a single webapp in a tomcat server. For example www.abc.com, www.xyz.com and several sites fetch content from my webapp hosted on tomcat with apache as the web server. My web app is hosted at www.mysite.com. www.abc.com should forward to www.mysite.com?id=abc www.xyz.com should forward to www.mysite.com?id=xyz Can you tell me how to configure dns entries, apache and tomcat configuration to achieve this scenario?? These site will have to be added dynamically! so is there any way to update the dns entries dynamically without restarting the dns server ... and similarly for apache and tomcat also??   I am trying to virtualize an Ubuntu machine using VMWare vCenter Converter, but ran into permissions issues. I followed the instructions of part 1 and 2 on this page but when I got to "For Ubuntu operating systems further configuration is needed" I started running into trouble. I'm decent at Linux, but I'm not an experienced sysadmin. How do I Target the specific user you will be using and assign it user id 0/group 0? How do I Ensure that you also still enable Allow root to ssh even though you are not using the root account? Thanks for your help.

• DDWRT or similar as repeater in a network.

  I have a friend with sever connection issues due to her wireless router being on the bottom floor of her house, and the computer being a story or two away. I have several old Linksys routers lying about, one of which is currently running DDWRT for my network. Would it be a good idea (effective) to configure one of these routers as a wireless bridge of some kind in an intermediary floor to improve her connection? Is there any specific configuration beyond the standard DDWRT setup that I would need to do? Thanks for your help. =)

• Cannot install icaclient due to problem with ia32-libs

  I have a problem installing the package icaclient on 13.10 Saucy Salamander 64bit. • Ubuntu OpenLDAP and Mac OS X Roaming Profiles

  Today, I'm installing OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 11.04. I have gone through the installation before a few times, but what I have never been able to do is use Mac OSX Lion's Directory Utility to administer the LDAP server, and also never got roaming profiles working. SO the question is: 1) Is there a configuration I need in OpenLDAP so I can administer it remotely. I vaguely remember something like that, but I can't find the answer online. 2) What do I need to setup roaming profiles for a mac os x. I'd like to backup all my laptop data to the LDAP's machine, and potentially, also backup with time machine to an external HD mounted no the Ubutnu machine (but that's a few days ahead of time for now).

• DNS and VPN issues

  I recently purchased a year contract for a KVM 512MB VPS running Ubuntu 11.04. I'm having some issues setting up some things on it though - two in particular that I just can't for the life of me figure out. Okay, so I'm trying to setup pptpd as my VPN for my iPhone and my Mac when I'm out on wireless networks. I'm able to login and the chap authenticates but that's as far as I get, no domains will resolve and end up loading forever, I uncommented ms-dns lines as someone had recommended to me and changed the DNS servers to Googles public ones with no luck, is there something I'm missing? (It's probably staring me in the face.) My second issue is that I have managed to setup LAMP but am having a problem with my domain, I have pointed the DNS at 123-reg to my VPS's IP and the 'www .' resolves properly, but when I try to go to the domain without the 'www .' I get the apache landing page ("The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.") I'm pretty sure there's something I've gotta configure in Apache for the virtual host but I'm missing it. Apart from these minor set-backs I'm enjoying the low-level configuration options of having a VPS and love managing my own server. Thanks!

• How to setup a simple self-hosted dynamic DNS server

  I have a small internal network of physical machines running hypervisors, which in turn run several KVM Ubuntu virtual machines. How would I setup an internal dynamic DNS server so that when I run a script to create a new virtual machine, that VM could automatically register itself in the DNS server? Bind seems to be the standard DNS server for Linux, but it seems designed for a much more "static" DNS model. Dynamically updating this would require a complicated script that would have to SSH into the DNS server, edit configuration files, and then restart the server. This doesn't seem like a very elegant solution. Are there better options? I saw a similar question, although they're asking for a solution for a public setting on Amazon. My servers are entirely private, and I don't want to rely on an external VM host or Dynamic DNS provider.

• trying to set and use a password via commandline using ultraVNC on windows server 2003 vnc

  Okay, so I installed ultravnc on windows server 2003. It uses the ultravnc.i.i file to store password and configuration information. But I'd like to be able to set the password using the command line. There is a tool called vncpwd: http://www.sysworksoft.net/products/vncpwd.html But it's old, and when you use it to change the password, it changes the password in the system registry instead of the ultravnc.ini file. But, you can set ultravnc to use the registry instead of the ini file. Success? No. I set ultravnc to use the registry (which stores the hashed password that I set using vncpwd), but, it still uses the password in the .ini file. does anyone know what gives.

• Disable/enable the proxy on a tab by tab basis in Firefox

  Is it possible to disable/enable the proxy connection on a tab-by-tab basis in Firefox? I can access the internet with the proxy enabled, and I can access our internal servers with the proxy disabled, but neither configuration allows the other. I have a feeling that Firefox 4's per tab profiles may permit this, but was wondering whether there was a way to achieve this on Firefox 3.6.13, perhaps through the use of an extension. For the moment I'm making do with quickProxy (not QuickProxy which I've just discovered while trying to find quickProxy) which allows me to switch the proxy on and off for the whole browser, but would prefer something more fine-grained.

• Launchd execute command when folder contents modified or changed.

  For the past two days i've been trying to get a launchd plist to execute a script "program" when the contents of a folder on my desktop contents have modified or changed. I've gone through tons of configuration settings and have tried the Users/me/Desktop/folderinquestion and Users/me/Desktop/folderinquestion (with and without trailing slash). The script executes only when something is added or removed but it doesn't recognize when files are updated and subdirectories. launchd is really my last hope to getting this to working i've already exausted folder actions, and bash scripts, uninstallable linux methods etc. I have used Lingon to create my plists and have followed this youtube tutorial. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is what I have right now, and like I said does not work when folder is modified or changed IDEA: Thinking about creating two separate plists that reference each other one plist can watch a folder for additions and subtractions and when one occurs it can create another plist that watches every file in the folder, this could also be recursive and count in for subdirectories.

• mod_cache serving the wrong content

  I'm trying to use mod_disk_cache to speed up a web site that is running on WordPress. Whenever I enable it with CacheEnable disk / and the rest being the stock Ubuntu configuration I start to get the wrong results. When I see the main page it's fine, but when I go to a specific post I get a RSS feed instead. Like if the cache is returning the wrong content. I've disabled my RewriteRules as it seems mod_cache doesn't work with that. I'm not even sure where to start to debug such a thing. Any ideas?

• Fedora Installation with software repository in DVD does not work

  I bought a new assembled PC with processor as Core-i3(2120) and Intel H61 motherboard and was trying to install Fedora 16 from a DVD. This DVD contains all the packages so that installation does not require to download packages from internet. I have used this DVD to install Fedora 16 offline many a times though in machines with different hardware configuration. But in this new machine when the installation reaches the stage wherein it asks for Software repository selection I select CD/DVD but the system fails to read the media and throws up an error that it cannot detect the media. THe LED in the DVD writer also indicate that the DVD is not being read. Now there is neither a problem with the DVD or the DVD drive because the installation started from the DVD itself. So what could the problem be, anything in the BIOS that is causing the problem, Is there any way I could utilize the packages already existing in the CD so that I save downloading the packages from DVD

  I've got an old laptop that is running Windows 2000 & Windows 98 in a multi-boot configuration. I need to add MS-DOS to that list of startup options. I've already added a primary partition, formatted it for FAT16 and made it bootable, and installed MS-DOS 6.22. My question is, how do I add my MS-DOS partition to the list of startup options? More information: My single hard drive has three primary partitions: 0: FAT32 Windows 2000 1: FAT32 Windows 98 2: FAT(16) MS-DOS 6.22 Currently, the boot-up screen lists Windows 2000 and Windows 98 as options, with Windows 2000 as the default choice.   I have a Dell Mini9 that came with Ubuntu 8.10. Out of the box, Wifi configuration was done under System settings - Network and worked straightforward. Then, after some update patches, NetworkManager was installed to replace this functionality. Initially, it did not carry over my settings and I had to figure out how to redo it. After lots of bumbling with it, it finally works. However, after bootup the NetworkManager icon waits about 2 minutes before even attempting to connect to the wireless network. Then, about a minute later, it connects and I'm on my way. The Mini9 boots up within 30 seconds from SSD, so opening Firefox and then waiting 3+ min for wireless networking is a bit of a pain. Can anything be done?

• Overlapping Samba Shares

  Is it OK to have samba shares that overlap, like the following: [whole-drive] path = /mnt/myusbdrive ... [music] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/music ... [movies] path = /mnt/myusbdrive/movies ... I have a mounted external HDD with music and movies, plus a whole bunch of other stuff like backups. I want to expose the music and movies directories as separate samba shares (probably with guest access), so that they're uncluttered with all the other stuff; and I want to expose the entire drive as a separate samba share (with higher permissions) for doing more administrative things across the drive. Does Samba behave well with this configuration? I'm wondering if I'd end up with problems like phantom writes if the same file is accessed at the same time across two different shares. Details: OS: Debian GNU/Linux wheezy/sid on Raspberry Pi HDD: NTFS, mounted as ntfs-3g. Samba: version 3.6.6
