• Improve XPath efficiency for repeated, parameterized queries

Oh, and the doc is constructed like so: InputSource in = new InputSource(new FileInputStream(filename)); DocumentBuilderFactory dfactory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance(); dfactory.setNamespaceAware(true); doc = dfactory.newDocumentBuilder().parse(in); I tried including the following lines reportEvaluator = new XPathEvaluatorImpl(reportDoc); reportResolver = reportEvaluator.createNSResolver(reportDoc); and rather creating a NodeIterator, instead creating an XPathResult: XPathResult result = (XPathResult)reportEvaluator.evaluate(query, doc.getElementsByTagName(SystemGlobal.YAHOO_KEYWORDSROOT).item(0), reportResolver, XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_ITERATOR_TYPE, null); however this ran even slower Is there a way in which I can speed up the running of this script? I have seen references to precompiled queries, though I haven't seen many actual details. Also, as seen in the code, I am using CachedXPathAPI, though the benefit for this case is not so great.   By default the behaviour of FNH is to map enums to its string in the db. • A couple of questions on exceptions/flow control and the application of custom exceptions

  1) Custom exceptions can help make your intentions clear. How can this be? The intention is to handle or log the exception, regardless of whether the type is built-in or custom. The main reason I use custom exceptions is to not use one exception type to cover the same problem in different contexts (eg parameter is null in system code which may be effect by an external factor and an empty shopping basket). However, the partition between system and business-domain code and using different exception types seems very obvious and not making the most of custom exceptions. Related to this, if custom exceptions cover the business exceptions, I could also get all the places which are sources for exceptions at the business domain level using "Find all references". Is it worth adding exceptions if you check the arguments in a method for being null, use them a few times, and then add the catch? Is it a realistic risk that an external factor or some other freak cause could cause the argument to be null after being checked anyway? 2) What does it mean when exceptions should not be used to control the flow of programs and why not? I assume this is like: if (exceptionVariable != null) { } Is it generally good practise to fill every variable in an exception object? As a developer, do you expect every possible variable to be filled by another coder?

• Passing binary blob through an Android content provider

  I have a content provider that is custom to my set of Android applications, and one of the things it needs to expose is a small (20-30k) byte array. The uri for these blobs looks like content://my.authority/blob/# where # is the row number; the resulting cursor has the standard _id column and a data column. I'm using a MatrixCursor in the provider's query method: byte[] byteData = getMyByteData(); MatrixCursor mc = new MatrixCursor(COLUMNS); mc.addRow(new Object[] { id, byteData }); Later, in the application consuming the data, I do Cursor c = managedQuery(uri, null, null, null, null); c.moveToFirst(); byte[] data = c.getBlob(c.getColumnIndexOrThrow("data")); However, data does not contain the contents of my original byte array; rather, it contains something like "[B@435cc518", which looks more like the address of the array than the contents. I tried wrapping the byte array in an implementation of java.sql.Blob, figuring that it might be looking for that since the content provider subsystem was written to be easy to use with SQLite, but it didn't help. Has anyone gotten this to work? If the data was in the file system, there are methods in ContentProvider that I could use to provide a marshalled InputStream to the client, but the data I'm trying to send back lives as a resource in the content provider's APK.

• Recommend a good db4o viewer

  I'm playing around with db4o, and I have the Object Manager viewer thingy for Visual Studio. It seems okay, but not exactly on par with tools like HeidiSQL/SQL Studio/etc., not to mention that it locks the db4o file--I can't use my db4o app and Object Manager at the same time. Maybe I'm using it wrong, but regardless, I'd like to know what else is out there. What tools would you recommend for looking at and manipulating db4o files?

• How to dispose a Writeable Bitmap? (WPF)

  Some time ago i posted a question related to a WriteableBitmap memory leak, and though I received wonderful tips related to the problem, I still think there is a serious bug / (mistake made by me) / (Confusion) / (some other thing) here. So, here is my problem again: Suppose we have a WPF application with an Image and a button. The image's source is a really big bitmap (3600 * 4800 px), when it's shown at runtime the applicaton consumes ~90 MB. Now suppose i wish to instantiate a WriteableBitmap from the source of the image (the really big Image), when this happens the applications consumes ~220 MB. Now comes the tricky part, when the modifications to the image (through the WriteableBitmap) end, and all the references to the WriteableBitmap (at least those that I'm aware of) are destroyed (at the end of a method or by setting them to null) the memory used by the writeableBitmap should be freed and the application consumption should return to ~90 MB. The problem is that sometimes it returns, sometimes it does not. Here is a sample code: // The Image's source whas set previous to this event private void buttonTest_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (image.Source != null) { WriteableBitmap bitmap = new WriteableBitmap((BitmapSource)image.Source); bitmap.Lock(); bitmap.Unlock(); //image.Source = null; bitmap = null; } } As you can see the reference is local and the memory should be released at the end of the method (Or when the Garbage collector decides to do so). However, the app could consume ~224 MB until the end of the universe. Any help would be great.

• trying to get the most accurate device location from GPS or Network in Android

  I am trying to determine the most accurate location of a device, in the shortest time possible. I am storing the data as a geopoint, and have it displayed on a mapview. The last time I activated the GPS on my device and let it get a location lock, i was approx 80 miles from where I am now. I have a location manager setup and a location listener. If I do this, I get NULL. myLocOverlay = new MyLocationOverlay(this, mapView); GeoPoint test = myLocOverlay.getMyLocation(); but in the next couple of lines; myLocOverlay.enableMyLocation(); mapView.getOverlays().add(myLocOverlay); With this, the overlay on the map shows the current location. It is using the Network provider, but is also attempting to get a GPS fix (it can't as I am indoors and no where near the top floor). If I construct the geopoint like this; if(lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps") != null) { test = new GeoPoint( (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps").getLatitude() * 1E6), (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("gps").getLongitude() * 1E6)); } else { if(lm.getLastKnownLocation("network") != null) { test = new GeoPoint( (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("network").getLatitude() * 1E6), (int) (lm.getLastKnownLocation("network").getLongitude() * 1E6)); } //bad things } Then I get confusing results. If I disable the devices GPS provider then the code moves onto the Network Provider and gives me a fairly accurate result. If I enable the GPS provider, then the geopoint comes back as the last place I allowed the device to get a GPS lock. I want to avoid the above results, and so was looking at using; GeoPoint test = myLocOverlay.getMyLocation(); BUT as I said above, I just get NULL from that. Short of getting the geopoints from both GPS and Network and then comparing them, and disregarding the GPS result if it is say 1 mile out of the Network location - i'm a bit stuck. why doesn't getMyLocation() work, shouldnt that return the GeoPoint of what myLocOverlay is showing on the mapview?

• model not showing up in django admin.

  Hi. I have ceated several django apps and stuffs for my own fund and so far everything has been working fine. Now i just created new project (django 1.2.1) and have run into trouble from 1st moments. I created new app - game and new model Game. i created admin.py and put related stuff into it. Ran syncdb and went to check into admin. Model did not show up there. I proceeded to check and doublecheck and read through previous similar threads: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1839927/registered-models-do-not-show-up-in-admin http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1694259/django-app-not-showing-up-in-admin-interface But as far as i can tell, they dont help me either. • ASP.NET MVC - using model property as form, how can I post to action?

  Consider the following model: public class BandProfileModel { public BandModel Band { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Relationship> Requests { get; set; } } and the following form: <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <%: Html.EditorFor(m => m.Band) %> <input type="submit" value="Save Band" /> <% } %> which posts to the following action: public ActionResult EditPost(BandProfileModel m, string band) { // stuff is done here, but m is null? return View(m); } Basically, I only have one property on my model that is used in the form. The other property in BandProfleModel is just used in the UI for other data. I'm trying to update just the Band property, but for each post, the argument "m" is always null (specifically, the .Band property is null). It's posting just fine to the action, so it isn't a problem with my route. Just the data is null. The ID and name attributes of the fields are BAND_whatever and Band.whatever (whatever being a property of Band), so it seems like it would work... What am I doing wrong? How can I use just one property as part of a form, post back, and have values populated via the model binder for my BandProfileModel property in the action? Thanks.

• Dreamweaver not loading due to workspace file problem

  I went to launch Dreamweaver CS 5.5 and this message popped up: XML parsing fatal error: Invalid document structure, line 1, file C:\Documents...(file path)...Workspace\My Workspace.xml It was followed by The following panel layout is missing or could not be read: C:...My Workspace.xml The application will not have a correct layout. Please load one from WindowsWorkspace After that, Dreamweaver acted as if it was going to load, but never did. When I tried to close the program, it crashed. I followed the file path and I saw two files: My Workspace.xml 0kb and My Workspace 5kb. The second one has an unknown file type. I deleted the first file and renamed the unknown file type to My Workspace.xml; everything worked fine after that point. Why did Dreamweaver do this? This has happened several times, but I have not changed anything that should affect that file type.

  I have a long - (void)viewDidLoad { } function that uses the internet to load a page, and whenever the application loads the URL, the screen is black. I have a UIActivityIndicator setup to show that the address is loading, but I don't know how to prevent it from seeming as if the application is not responding, and I don't want to show the network activity indicator [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setNetworkActivityIndicatorVisible:YES]; because the screen will still be black, just with a loader in the top corner. • [MFC] I can't re-parent a window

  Following on from this question, now I have a clearer picture what's going on... I have a MFC application with no main window, which exposes an API to create dialogs. When I call some of these methods repeatedly, the dialogs created are parented to each other instead of all being parented to the desktop... I have no idea why. But anyway even after creation, I am unable to change the parent back to NULL or CWnd::GetDesktopWindow()... if I call SetParent followed by GetParent, nothing has changed. So apart from the really weird question of why Windows is magically parenting each dialog to the last one created, is there anything I'm missing to be able to set these windows as children of the desktop? UPDATED: I have found the reason for all this, but not the solution. • How can I have my Windows keymap on Mac?

  On Mac, to get a "{" for example, you have to press OPTION key plus 8 to get a curly brace. But on Windows it is ALT-GR plus 7. Another example: On Windows I can press CTRL and Backspace to remove one whole word. On Mac it is OPTION + Backspace. Is there a way I can remap these Mac-driven behavior to be more Windows-like? Because this is, as a very long Windows user, a big burden on me to have such a different keyboard layout. Edit: I'm using a german keyboard layout.

  Hi all, I'm trying to take an image that I have in a image object and render into a Core Graphics PDF context-- happens to be on an iPhone but this question surely applies equally to desktop Quartz. This UIImage is a simple color-on-white image at about 600x800 resolution. If I (say) turn it into a PNG file, that file looks exactly as expected-- so the data is OK.   So I have a project where there is some automatic initialization going on through some classes that are created automatically as global variables (yeah they are static instances). At a point inside this (it has no relation with the C# GUI for the user, so it isn't derived from any C# class) I need to see if a flag is set or not. I use toolstrip menu with checked and unchecked status in order to set or unset the flag. The problem is that I have difficulties to see if the flag is checked or not from this static class. My class is inside a different project/namespace and a DLL is created what later is linked to the GUI of the application. The GUI depends from this Manager class so making the Manager class to depend from the GUI is not an option. Nevertheless, I should be able to see its state knowing its name or through some other means.   Hello Im using OLE DB Source for get rows from a dBase IV file and it works, then I split the data and perform a group by with aggregate component. So I obtain a row with two columns with "null" value : CompanyID | CompanyName | SubTotal | Tax | TotalRevenue Null Null 145487 27642.53 173129.53 this success because all rows have been grouped with out taking care about the firsts columns and just Summing the valuable columns, so I need to change that null for default values as CompanyID = "100000000" and CompanyName = "Others".
