• How much RAM on a windows VPS (2003, 2008, 2008R2)

  Right now I'm running Windows Server 2003 on a VPS with 640mb RAM and it works fine. I would like to upgrade OS to Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I understand that it is difficult to say how much RAM is needed, but can you make a comparison between 2003 and the two new 2008 versions? RAM on VPS is by far the most expensive item, so I wonder if I can get similar performances with 1GB and 2008 or 2008R2 compared to 640MB and 2003. Basically I run IIS, SQL Server and MailEnable.

• Dell Latitude E6420 dual-boot Ubuntu + Windows 7 Optimus graphics problems

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors?   I understand that when windows caches user credentials, these can sometimes be used by malicious parties to access other machines once a machine containing cached credentials is compromised, a method known as "pass the hash"[1]. For this reason I would like to get control over what's cached to reduce the risk of cached credentials being used maliciously. It is possible to prevent all caching by zeroing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount, but this is too indiscriminate: laptops users need to be able to login when away from the network. • Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

• Windows Advanced Firewall certificate based IPSEC

  I'm working on migrating from using IPSEC settings stored under the 'IP Security Policies on Active Directory' to using the 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' for my 2008+ boxes. I have successfully been able to get this set up using Kerberos authentication, however my openswan implementation on my Linux boxes is using certificates. Whenever I try changing the authentication method to computer certificate (using RSA and my root CA) the connection is bombing out. I've made this change at both a connection request policy and on the IPSEC settings on the root Windows Firewall with Advanced Security node. The windows event log shows the authentication request is taking place but failing negotiating a mode. What am I missing here?

  I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP. Is it a collective limit for the whole server, or is it applied separately for each Apache child process/thread? If it is separate, how many of those children are launched on Windows? One per request? One per processor core? Something in the middle? Is this somehow configurable?

• Cannot access internet or remote network after connecting to Windows VPN

  I set up a VPN by creating an incoming VPN connection (VPN server) in my Windows 8 machine at home (not a Windows Server). I forwarded the PPTP port in my router (port 1723) to this machine and enabled PPTP passthrough. In a second Windows 8 machine out of home, I created an outgoing VPN connection (VPN client). And I am able to connect to my home VPN, but I don't have access to any home resource or even internet. This is the output of the client ipconfig: And this are the settings of my VPN server: UPDATE: My VPN server has assigned the 192.168.1.144 IP adress at my home network. So, I tried setting the "IP address assignment" range from 192.168.1.150 to 192.168.1.200. And when a VPN client gets connected, it gets an address in that range, but it doesn't make any difference.

• Unable to set NTFS permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity on Windows 2008 SP2

  On Windows 2008 R2 I am able to set NTFS permissions for an application pool's synthesised ApplicationPoolIdentity account thus: ICACLS d:\websites\site1\www /grant "IIS AppPool\site1":(CI)(OI)(M) The website's application pool is named site1 and is configured to run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. The site's authentication is also configured to authenticate as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I've done this a thousand times on Windows 2008 Standard Edition R2 with never a hitch. However if I try to do the same in Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 I get the error: IIS AppPool\site1: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files I also notice that this fails if I try to set permissions for the application pool identity via the security GUI as well. I've seen this before and a reboot has cleared this issue but I'd like to know why this happens periodically. Googling around suggests other folks have hit this problem but there's never a satisfactory explanation. Why would this be?

• Prevent Windows 7 from installing a "critical" updates that crashes the system

  I am running Windows 7 home premium. Up until yesterday, everything was going just beautifully, until I received a "critical update". As soon as the critical update was installed, the system became extremely unstable and froze up every few minutes requiring me to restart the system several times, with the same results. I used system restore to roll back the * update, and everything went back to normal... except that I keep getting a message telling me to restart the computer so that it can install this "critical update". There is no "don't install that crap on my machine" option. Disabling the updates doesn't change anything, turning off the windows update service doesn't change anything either, and being on Home premium, I have no access to the group policies. Any ideas of what can be done to prevent Windows from installing this update the next time I reboot?

• Create a Windows 7 System Repair ISO?

  According to the Microsoft website I can run "Create a system repair disc" from the start menu to burn a recovery Disc. However, there are many situations (including not having a disk drive) where this cannot be done. My goal is to create a bootable USB drive according to this guide but their method to do so without burning a physical disc includes downloading an ISO from "somebody's" website. I don't know who "somebody" is and I feel it is reasonable to not boot something I can't verify as being untampered with. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft does not host a recovery disc ISO for download as this would be the easiest solution. So my problem is that I'd like to circumvent Microsofts "burn to disc" option with a "burn to ISO" through any reasonable means.

• Best technique for reusing a Windows system image across configurations

  We are a small company that provides solutions for ventilation systems. Part of the solution is a "controller" which communicates with the ventilation equipment. These controllers are simply Dell computers that come with our Windows 7 system image on them and sometimes some special hardware. We typically do a batch of 10 controllers at a time. We have been using Norton Ghost to apply the system image, but this process breaks because Dell changes the system configuration often, and our Windows image now does not contain the correct drivers. This is especially a problem when they change the RAID controller. To improve this, I see 2 options: use some kind of virtualization and install a hypervisor on each PC. This would solve the driver problem, but probably cause trouble with our special hardware. use some method of adding the proper drivers to our Windows image in offline mode. I haven't got much experience in either of these approaches. How would you solve our problem?

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

• Is Windows Server 2003 on 96 MB possible?

  I have an old laptop, a Pentium II with 96 MB. I have had Windows 2000 on it for ages, it was slow but usable. But now I have to upgrade since I can't get my USB-wlan drivers to install (the old PCMCIA network card broke). I would prefer to install Windows XP but I have no spare licence, but I do have a Windows Server 2003 licence. Do you think it's possible (and usable) to squeeze in 2003 on this computer? Edit: Unfortunately 2003 simply refuses to install on the laptop. It hangs with an error message (paraphrased) 2003 has detected a problem with your computer and has halted the installation to prevent damage. And then some error codes This happens very early in the installation while it's copying the installation files just after I accepted the licence. So I give up for now.

• Multicasting Windows 7 Image

  I am trying to deploy some new machines with windows 7 for the first time in our computer labs. We used to use third party imaging software and then run sysprep after the image was copied(XP), but it seems you can't go that route with windows 7. We set up a new imaging server with the windows system image manager, but when we try to multicast the image it pretty much takes down our whole staff and faculty network. I heard you can turn on a multicast feature on our cisco switches to help with the issue, but that it also slows the switches to a crawl. Another idea we have tried was pulling the the computer lab switch off the main network and plugging the imaging server directly into the computer lab switch so the multicast doesn't take down our network, but it doesn't seem to work without being able to hit a domain controller. Is there a way to multicast without taking out the network? I feel like I am missing something... Thanks in advance

• Intel RAID0 on Windows 8 not Displaying Correct Media Type

  I have my primary C Drive which consists of 2 Intel 120GB SSD Drives in a RAID0. I have a clean install of Windows 8 Pro, latest MEI software, latest RST software, latest Intel Toolbox. Prior to this I had installed Windows 8 Pro as an upgrade. When I went into the Optimize Drives while in the Upgrade installation, it showed the Media Types as Solid State Drives. However, now since I am in a brand new install, it is showing the Media Type as Hard Disk Drive. I am worried about this because of the trim not working properly. Before when in the upgrade, it showed SSD as the media type and the Optimize option would perform a manual trim. Unfortunately, my search credentials on Google are so common to many other things (ie Raid0, SSD, Windows 8, Media Type) that all I am finding are useless topics.   Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh.   I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut?   I am getting an error while trying to resize System Partition for Windows 2003 Server (this is a VM on a Hyper-v Windows Server 2008) using GParted Live CD ISO. Followed this tutorial: http://malaysiavm.com/blog/how-to-resize-windows-2003-server-virtual-disk-on-vmware-esx/ and GParted Doc http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm (They are very similar) The VM has a Dynamic VHD file, I have already increased it using Hyper-v.   I have installed Windows XP Virtual PC on Windows 7 to test a site that is having issues in IE7 on windows xp - the website loads up but you cannot click on hyperlinks - its like the website has frozen - now is this a browser support issue or OS issue? Can anyone shed any light on this? Is there any browser tools i can use to spot any problems? Sorry if i have been too vague - not much else to say really - completely lost.. Maybe this might help a little; Any guidance is appreciated UPDATE: I think i know what the problem maybe - its the jQuery UI reference that is causing issues with the site. • How to make a Windows Vista boot / recovery cd from a running system without using an original CD / DVD

  I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

• Unable to map to web folder using WebDAV client on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hello, I have a client running Windows Server 2008 R2 on several servers. One of the servers is also running SharePoint 3.0 and my client has created a web folder to map to. I can map to the web folder from all Server 2008 R2 boxes that have the WebDAV client (part of Desktop Experience feature) installed, except for the server the folder resides on. When I attempt to map to the web folder on the server which the folder resides, I am repeatedly prompted to enter my credentials. I am using the same account that I used to map the web folder on the other servers. I have also tried mapping from the command line and receive 'Access Denied' What may be causing the problem? I would think that if I can map to the drive from one server, I should be able to map the drive from the rest as long as the WebDAV client is installed, especially on the server where the folder is located. Let me discover new apps that may be useful I know this is utopian on the Windows platform since development, upgrading, purchasing are so fragmented, but the Apple Store, Chrome App store, etc do make your life easier. Just trying to find something to ease the pain a little bit... So, are there any good services/software out there that would help me achieve some of the listed goals?

  Domain controller failed to restore using windows backup tools One Issue: One 08 R2 domain controller with fully daily backup(only one controller in this company) is out of services due to hardware issue. The below two methods i tried to recover to the new purchasing server,but it is fail. 1)First Method: Using the windows 2008 R2 CD to boot and carry out recover from backup. Everything is OK, but after reboot it will come out blue screen and restart again. 2)Second Method: a)Install the OS in this new server b) Reboot the server to DSRM. c)Using the Windows Backup Tools to restore the system states only After reboot, it will come out the blue screen error and restart again. I know this is may be the different hardware issue, but how to resolve? Or can we only restore the AD services not whole system status? Any suggestion?

  The accepted answer of this question Fast Ways of Cd'ing on *nix? mentions bash having CDPATH is there an equivalent in windows? so from any directory e.g. c:\windows I could do c:\windowscd compbar* and it'd take me to m:\a\b\c\d\e\compbar what if there are many compbar directories? well, the CDPATH solution is one solution, I suppose you order them it'd search through the CDPATH environment variable and choose the first. I'd like that for windows.

• Blocked port 25 on Windows 7 64 bit

  Strange problem. I have 2 computers connected to Wifi router. One with Windows Vista & second with 2 operating systems: SUSe Linux and Windows 7 64bit on it. Computer with Vista can connect to SMTP server of my email provider (and any other) using port 25, and can connect to a mail server using telnet mail.server.com 25 if this port is open. Computer with dual operating system can (using Linux) do the same. The same computer, with the same hardware (Wifi card etc.), and using the same WiFi router, cannot however use Port 25 and cannot Telnet into any smtp server. So the problem is in Windows 7. I did uninstall all antivirus software and disabled the firewall. The problem is still here. Is there way how find out which software is blocking this port?
